Life imitates art and art scams life in Lynch's debut, a picaresque fantasy that chronicles the career of Locke Lamora—orphan, thief and leader of the Gentlemen Bastards—from the time the Thiefmaker sells Locke to the faking Eyeless Priest up to Locke's latest con of the nobility of the land of Camorr. As in any good caper novel, the plot is littered with obvious and not-so-obvious obstacles, including the secret police of Camorr's legendary Spider and the mysterious assassinations of gang leaders by the newly arrived Gray King. Locke's resilience and wit give the book the tragicomic air of a traditional picaresque, rubbery ethics and all. The villain holds the best moral justification of any of the players. Lynch provides plenty of historical and cultural information reminiscent of new weirdists Steven Erikson and China Miéville, if not quite as outré. The only drawback is that the realistic fullness of the background tends to accentuate the unreality of the melodramatic foreground. (July)

Love this series.

This is the first series of books I read on Kindle, and then immediately bought physical copies, just because I like these books so well. The author is a wordsmith of extreme caliber, crafting some of the most artful dialogue and descriptions I have read in ages. Beyond fun, these books suck you into a whole different world, and spit you out wanting more. Defying the urge to spend pages and pages insulting the intelligence of his readers on dull expositional world building, Scott Lynch instead drops us into a fully crafted world, and lets the reader figure out the nuances and details as they go, thus adding the excitement of discovery to his already fantastic work. Each installment has left me eager to read the next.

Clever and diverting, but it took me a while to warm to Locke Lamora.

This fantasy tale is clever and diverting from its opening pages, and remains clever and diverting throughout. The setting is distinctive rather than generic. The characters are flamboyantly memorable. The plot is intricate and well-executed, switching back and forth in time without ever losing my interest in either of the two main story threads. I am looking forward to reading more by Scott Lynch.

That said, it took 145 pages before I warmed to the main character, Locke Lamora. I am the kind of reader who much prefers to like the protagonist, yet who doesn't give them the benefit of the doubt and like them purely by default. I need a reason, even a slight one, to like them. (I read the start of the book in a somewhat distracted state during a long plane flight, so it's possible that I overlooked a moment when Locke Lamora helped an injured baby rabbit--or some such--before page 145.) Thereafter I enjoyed the book a lot. I was gripped when I should be gripped, sad when I should be sad, and I am now tempted to push the sequel close to the top of my huge to-read stack.

One of a kind!

The book is brilliant. The opening chapters greet us with an introduction to a young man named Locke Lamora. He is a crafty, honest little thief who is so clever he manages to shut down an entire city. Children aren't revered or cared for and after a plague left many orphaned, the city is over run with starving children. Where there are young able bodies, there are opportunists who will use children to help make profits. This is how young Locke lives during a time in his early years, under the care of a lowly thief. Six-year old Locke, having driven this boss mad with his schemes and penchant for ignoring rules, is turned over to a priest.

From here the story explodes into the wonderful tale of "The Lies of Locke Lamora". This book is the start of the best con men tale ever published. The characters are funny, clever and rambunctious. They live in a land crafted by elves, run by a gang boss, supported by the elite rich and monarchical politicians. Lynch's story is so well-told and maintained I hope the series continues on. There is no series like it. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Clearly written for adults, The Face nevertheless channels the wit and wisdom of Aesop as well as the violence and villainy of the Brothers Grimm. While Koontz's penchant for elaborately singsong descriptions can be grating, ultimately it lends this tale its folkloric quality, i.e. "The June-bug jitter, scarab click, tumblebug tap of the beetle-voiced rain spoke at the window, click-click-click." In this fable, the world is a menacing and threatening place for adults and children alike, and the naïve and uninformed go trip-trapping through life with no notion of the trolls that lurk in the dark. The final pages of Koontz's newest are uplifting enough to make Cain repent and Pilate weep. And there's much else in this novel to savor-and savor it readers must, because some of the book is slow going (it's also much too long). There's scarcely an author alive who, judging by his books, loves the English language more than Koontz; there's certainly no bestselling author of popular fiction who makes more use of figures of speech and whose sentences offer more musicality. That can be Koontz's weakness as well as strength, however. Koontz is also one of the great suspense authors, and when he's fashioned a particularly robust plot to carry his creative prose, as in last year's By the Light of the Moon, he's an Olympian. But when he stretches a thin story line beyond resilience, the language can overcome the narrative like kudzu vines. That happens here, despite the tale's grandeur and strong lines. The eponymous Face is the world's biggest movie star; he doesn't appear in the novel, but his smart, geeky 10-year-old son, Fric, takes center stage, as does Ethan Truman, cop-turned-security chief of the Face's elaborate estate and Fric's main human protector when one Corky Laputa, who's dedicated his life to anarchy, decides to sow further disorder by kidnapping this progeny of the world's idol. Fric's secondary protector was also human, a mobster, until he recently died and became Fric's (somewhat inept) guardian angel. Most of the narrative concerns Corky's abominations and Ethan and Fric's dawning awareness, via numerous uncanny events, of the unfolding horror. Koontz's characters are memorable and his unique mix of suspense and humor absorbing; but his overwriting-e.g., a chapter of about 2,000 words to describe Corky's coverup of a murder, when a sentence or two would have sufficed-make this worthy novel less than a dream. Still, great kudos to Koontz for creating, within the strictures of popular fiction, another notable novel of ideas and of moral imperatives.

Not a damsel, but a poor little rich kid is in distress in Koontz's latest thriller. Aelfric--Fric for short--is the skinny, 10-year-old son of the biggest movie star in the world, Channing Manheim, called The Face after his most obvious asset. A homicidal anarchist literature professor plans to kidnap and torture the boy to death, recording the proceedings for controlled leakage to the media, all for the sake of making everyone paranoid and increasing disorder in the world. The psycho has figured out how to get Fric despite the fact that the Manheim mansion is as well guarded as the White House. Chief of security Ethan Truman is certainly capable of dealing with the sicko, but he thinks the threat implied by six mysterious packages sent to the mansion is against The Face. Fortunately, a series of very convincing hallucinations is prodding Ethan toward enlightenment at the same time that untraceable phone calls and a man who emerges from and disappears back into reflective surfaces are warning Fric of oncoming danger. Koontz keeps the suspense setting on high and rides his hobbyhorses against Hollywood, the media, and present-day academe, while proving that his sense of brand-name product placement is superb. Original and Entertaining

From the start, the stage is set for this unusual and original tale with the rain, pouring down incessantly over the city of angels. In fact, the grey, gloomy skies and rain are major characters in the book. (Koontz refers to them constantly, and to great effect) We have all the ingredients for the standard thriller genre: troubled and sensitive cops, a dazzling Hollywood star, an exceedingly intelligent and evil antagonist and the constant threat of doom, hanging over the reader like the sword of Pericles, ready to drop at any moment. But ~The Face~ gives us something more than the prototype: stereotypes are brilliantly combined with the paranormal. Throughout the reading, my rational mind continued to search for logical explanations for the many strange events that happen to the main characters. To my frustration, however, no rational answers came forth because, in most cases, there weren't any. This novel makes excellent reading because what you see in not always what you expect or get...
The strongest aspect about the writing itself is the author's skill for characterization. Even the apparent insignificant characters in the novel have certain depth, which invokes the feeling one gets when meeting someone casually for the first time. He devotes each chapter of the tale from the perspective of each major player, and we easily enter their minds, feel their thoughts and emotions. Particularly the ten year old boy, Fric, with his pubescent humor and loneliness...and, of course, the terrifying literature professor and his Deconstructive, post modern stance on the written word. As a ruthless anarchist, he could have no better or appropriate philosophy concerning literature. This guy is truly bad without being outlandishly comic-bookish, similar to many other serial killer types in the thriller market place. Corky Laputa is just plain wicked.
If you're expecting the stock-standard thriller with all the tired stereotypes, you'll be disappointed with this novel. Then again, it has all the successful ingrediants one might expect, but Koontz throws in an interesting wrench into the work, which makes the book refreshing and highly enjoyable.

You Can See Terror Coming, but You Can't Stop It

This book is one of Koontz' best. The beginning was a little slow to take off, but I was hooked around page 50 or so, and could barely keep from flipping to the end to see how it all ended. What impressed me most about this book was the outstanding ending, with more than one of those twists that many authors try to put into a book, but here they are all successful.
Channing Mannheim is the highest paid actor in the world. Handsome to the point where he is called "The Face," he lives a life style that none of us can imagine. Surrounded constantly by bodyguards, servants, and various hangers-on, he is the epitome of the rich and famous. While Channing is mentioned frequently throughout the book, we meet this world-famous man personally but once. However, we lack not for principal characters. The most important are Aelfric (who likes to be called Fric) Mannheim, Channing's 10-year-old and somewhat normal son, Ethan Truman, a former police officer, now head of Channing's security and married to the late Hannah Truman, Corky Laputa, anarchist extraordinaire, and Dunny Whistler, once (and perhaps always) Ethan's best friend, though turned to a life of crime before he died.
While these four characters are the focus of the multiple chapters, Koontz does his very best to complicate the story by introducing a host of secondary characters. The characters are described in sufficient depth to enhance your understanding of the personalities of the principal characters, and while the complexity of the story challenges the ability to keep track of who's who, in general I was able to stay on top of what was happening in the story.
With all these characters running about, there must be an interesting story here, and there is. To describe the happenings in detail would give away too much, so I offer a flavor. The reader quickly finds out that Corky has a good acquaintance by the name of Rolf Reynard. Rolf is supposed to be leaving mysterious packages at the estate of Channing Mannheim, but he makes a big mistake and Mannheim's security spots him on camera. Let the weirdness begin.
We are quickly lured into a world inhabited by some of the strangest, and often some of the most chilling, people and events of any Koontz book. A man walks from a mirror. Anarchists plot to sow disorder on the world by killing and trying to cause racial unrest and unrest in general. Any opportunity to increase anger by one neighbor toward another is taken. We also discover that these anarchists have an evil in them that may be more responsible for their enjoyment of chaos than a dislike for order. Dead men may walk. A central character is killed, or is he? We come face to face with unspeakable evil. We meet ultimate good. Koontz has managed to cram a lot into 600 pages of reading pleasure.
Koontz has a history of unsatisfying endings. This book is proof that when Koontz comes up with a good ending, it can be a great ending. While I had predicted portions of the ending, much of it, including most of the key aspects, was a total surprise. Portions of the last part of the book were worthy of James Bond. I suspect that this book would make an excellent movie. I plan to go see it, as it inevitably will become a movie.
Koontz has written all types of books, including science fiction, fantasy, horror, mystery, thrillers, and just plain weird books. This book is a supernatural horror story, and a very good one. While the action is steady and paced versus a roller coaster ride, it is like the long, long climb to the top of a single steep hill. While the wait can seem endless, the drop at the end is worth it. Fans of Koontz will find this to be one of Koontz' best. Fans of horror novels will enjoy the novel ending. Excellent reading here!

An Excellent Tale

In order for a book to be good, one thing it absolutely must have is interesting characters. This one does. From the ex-cop turned security chief, to the little boy in peril, these are characters I'd like to see more of, and that's always a good sign. If you read a book and at the end you wish you could know more about the people in the book, then you've found a pretty good read. But this one doesn't stop there. It also has a beautifully crafted story that builds slowly, gaining steam gradually, so you can savor the taste of it as you read along. It's eerie, not ghastly, and the ending made me weep. Give it a look, you probably won't be disappointed.

About the Author
The son of a policeman, Joseph Wambaugh (b. 1937) began his writing career while a member of the Los Angeles Police Department. He joined the LAPD in 1960 after three years in the Marine Corps, and rose to the rank of detective sergeant before retiring in 1974. His first novel, "The New Centurions" (1971), was a quick success, drawing praise for its realistic action and intelligent characterization, and was adapted into a feature film starring George C. Scott. He followed it up with "The Blue Knight" (1972), which was adapted into a mini-series starring William Holden and Lee Remick.Since then Wambaugh has continued writing about the LAPD. He has been credited with a realistic portrayal of police officers, showing them not as superheroes but as men struggling with a difficult job, a depiction taken mainstream by television s "Police Story", which Wambaugh helped create in the mid-1970s. In addition to novels, Wambaugh has written nonfiction, winning a special Edgar Award for 1974 s "The Onion Field", an account of the longest criminal trial in California history. His most recent work is the novel "Hollywood Moon" (2010).

One Of Waumbaugh's Best

I first read this about this book in a feature article in Los Angles Magazine in 1984. I later read this book while spending the weekend at the Marriott Rancho Las Plamas Resort in Rancho, Mirage, Ca. near where this book takes place.
The book focuses on a San Diego Police Officer who looses his son in the PSA jet crash in San Diego and escapes to a desrt town to escape San Diego and to still be near his ex wife who lives in Rancho Mirage in an exclusive Country Club.
The Main Character of this novel "Black Sid" gets an all expense paid vaction to Palm Springs to investigate a murder of a Millionares son. Black Sid like Harry Bright and the millionare all have lost their son.
The plot is very captivating and well worth the reading. Just be careful, it may inspire you enough to go to the Coachella Valley area and fall in love with the desert and buy a home in Rancho Mirage like I did!

Good, laugh-out loud, read.

Wambaugh again combines a real mystery plot with some truly humorous anecdotes pulled right from real-life police work. Having been familiar with this line of work, and the locale in which this book is set, I found it a good read - and one that made me laugh out loud at times. Maybe we all have our "Secret..." as does Harry Bright.

Haunting

Wambaugh is one of my favorite authors and I have read many of his books.

This was my favorite.

Great imagery of the Desert and generally good character development.

My only complaint about the book was the all too familiar shallow bar scene that features several cops acting like idiots.

The most prominent character is a detective named Sidney. His investigative technique seemed very clever and realistic.

The conclusion of the book was not forshadowed and hits you like a locomotive.

The story paints a very raw reality of life and the human spirit that keeps you thinking and even having dreams long after you finish.

In some ways the story is a great tragedy, but it is also very touching to see the love and self sacrifice characters in the book show to a very wounded soul.

The Battle of Iwo Jima, fought in the winter of 1945 on a rocky island south of Japan, brought a ferocious slice of hell to earth: in a month's time, more than 22,000 Japanese soldiers would die defending a patch of ground a third the size of Manhattan, while nearly 26,000 Americans fell taking it from them. The battle was a turning point in the war in the Pacific, and it produced one of World War II's enduring images: a photograph of six soldiers raising an American flag on the flank of Mount Suribachi, the island's commanding high point.

Most likely a famous photograph from 1945: six tired, helmeted Marines, fresh from a long, terrifying and bloody battle, work together to raise the American flag on Mount Suribachi. Bradley's father, John, was one of the six. In this voluminous and memorable work of popular history mixed with memoir, Bradley and Powers (White Town Drowsing) reconstruct those Marines' experiences, and those of their Pacific Theater comrades. The authors begin with the six soldiers' childhoods. Soon enough, bombs have fallen on Pearl Harbor, and by May '43 the young men have become proud leathernecks. Bradley and Powers incorporate accounts of specific battles, like "Hellzapoppin Ridge" (Bougainville, December '43), and pull in corps life and lore, from the tough-minded to the slightly silly, from mandatory penis inspections (medics checking for VD) to life in the pitch-dark of "Tent City No. 1." And they cover the strategy and tactics leading up to the awful battle for the islandAthe navy's disputed plans for offshore bombardment, cut at the last minute from 10 days to three; the 16 miles of Japanese underground tunnels, far more than Allied intelligence expected. Beneath The Flag

I was only 5 when the attack on Iwo Jima took place. My own father, by virtue of age, good luck and a naval officer's commission escaped conscription into this particular hell. My personal wartime experience is a vague one of watching free movie musicals at the Ottumwa Iowa Naval Air Station, squashing and saving tin cans for the war effort and finally weaving red white and blue crepe paper into the spokes of my junior bike in celebration of VJ day. Thanks to a new book about World War II, I am discovering what it was really like back then to feel true patriotism. It is a bittersweet revelation, but a very valid one.
"Flags of Our Fathers" is a book which appeals not only to the die-hard WWII buff but to any person, male or female, with an interest in a teeth clenching, powerful and poignant story. It describes a horrible battle, the incredible selfless sacrifices of young men and the angst of their families.
James Bradley & Ron Powers have brought to vivid life the real people behind the famous flag-raising mythos, the surreal war in which they so valiantly fought and the survivors' eventual reentry into civilian life. This is an adventure story of true horrific experiences. On the surface it is a "good guy-bad guy" saga in which our good guys finally triumph. The good guys lucky enough to come home are quiet, self effacing and seemingly forever linked to the ghosts of those who did not survive. In an age before psychologists had discovered and mined "survivor's guilt" and Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome, the luckiest of these largely teenaged boys trained, fought, were wounded, came back and resumed living to the best of their ability. I defy any woman not to bleed for the mothers and fathers who waited and any man not to cry for the "uncommon valor" of these very young sons. Bradley's personal experiences with his own hero father, his intimate interviews with families of these sons and his own quiet faith are melded with the poetic prose of Ron Powers into a seamless whole.
This is a meticulously researched, lovingly crafted and stunning battle book, written by exceptional men about exceptional men. It is sure to become a classic.

Real American Heros

Without question this is one of the best battle books of WWII. I think it can be compared with "D-Day" by Stephen Ambrose for its depth and the amount of research done by Bradley on the battle and the men who fought there.
I was barely four years old when the famous photo was taken and therefore grew up with the image firmly planted in my mind. What Bradley has done is put face on each of the six men who raised that flag.
At the heart of the story is the savagery of the battle, the courage and sacrafice of the men who fought the battle and the fact that no one questioned why they were there and for what they were fighting. In my mind every man who stepped off a landing craft to fight on the beaches of Iwo Jima was a hero. Unfortunatly, those who came home probably didn't think so and had to fight a different kind of battle which Mr. Bradley describes in detail.
This is a book I found hard to put down. And like the Rosenthal photo, the images created by James Bradley will stay with me.

Amazing read

Easily one of the best books I have read in a while. Mr. Bradley goes above and beyond telling the stories of the flag risers. It is a shame though ths Marines admitted they misidentified the author's father, and he is not one of the flag risers. Either way it is an amazing read and gives a brilliant synopsis of the training and battle of Iwo Jima, and what the men went through mentally both before and after.

An outstanding science fiction novel

There are some science fiction novels, like Neal Asher's The Skinner, that are set in a world that is so fascinating that shallowly drawn characters do seriously not hurt the readability of the novel. The world of Spin State is outlined, but never quite fully detailed. The main setting, a planet called Compson's World, has the gritty feel of an Appalachian coal mining town. Spin State does not rely on the flash of strange worlds, but rather on a finely drawn and complex main character, Catherine Li.

In Spin State something bad has happened to the Earth. Humans are no longer able to inhabit the planet on a full time basis. Humanity has spread out through the Galaxy, in huge orbital habitats and on terraformed alien worlds. One of these is Compson's World. The humans who originally settled these worlds are genetically engineered, raised in creches. The engineered humans are tougher and stronger, allowing them to survive better in the hostile environment of an alien world in the early states of terraforming.

Eventually the natural, unengineered, humans that follow rebel against the engineered competition that they feel they can't compete with. Further engineering of the human gene set is banned. Humans with engineered gene sets are not allowed the same rights and are not allowed to travel freely.

Catherine Li, the central character of Spin State does not come from standard human stock. As a baby she is adopted and raised on Compson's World by two natural human parents. She manages to escape the griding poverty of the mining planet and join the United Nations peacekeeping force.

Catherine Li joins the United Nations peacekeepers during a war with the Syndicate, an offshoot of the human race that has embraced engineered humanity. She rises to the rank of Major, but her background as an engineered human haunts her.

Spin State on the surface is a murder mystery. Catherine Li is sent to Compson's World, a place she has promised herself she would never return to, on a mission to find the murderer of Hannah Sharifi, a physicist whose work has allowed faster than light communication and travel. Hannah Sharifi is an engineered human and although she is a physicist on the level of Einstein or Schrodinger, she was never treated with the full rights that a natural human would have.

As the plot of Spin State unfolds the various facets Catherine Li's personality and story emerge. Li is a strong and at times brutal person, whose hard edges are a result of her background and her will to survive. By the end of the book, Catherine has become more than a warrior.

At the end of Spin State Chris Moriarty includes a number of references from physics, philosophy and artificial intelligence. The book frequently refers to Bose-Einstein condensates. In the book this is an exotic form of matter that can only be found on Compson's World. In our world Bose-Einstein condensates exist as a state of matter that is very near absolute zero. Bose-Einstein condenstates are a unique state of matter where all atoms exist in the same quantum state. However, if a Bose-Einstein condensate warms up even a little bit over its fractional closeness to absolute zero, its unique properties disapear.

The room temperature Bose-Einstein condensates in Spin State are the medium for faster than light communication and travel. Compson's World is of critical strategic importance because it is the only source for this exotic material. This also makes the supply of Bose-Einstein condensates a finite resource in the face of growing demand. Before she was murdered, Hannah Sharifi was working on a technique to grow artificial room temperature Bose-Einstein condensates.

The science underlying the plot of Spin State is somewhat tangential. The rare Bose-Einstein condensates of Compson's World provide a plot motivation, but they are not central to the plot. The character of Catherine Li is what draws the reader in and makes this book so good.

The plot of Spin State is complicated, at times to the point of obscurity. Wealthy people and people in the military, like Catherine Li, have neural implants throughout their central nervous system. This somehow allows them to experience virtual reality, but the details in Spin State are rather vague (for a science fiction book which revolves almost entirely around virtual reality, see Karl Schroeder's Lady of Mazes). There are a few scenes where Catherine is eating at an expensive resturant, via virtual reality, which has a strange feel about it. After all, even the most expensive virtual oysters are still just an illusion, even if you can taste them and feel them slide down your throat. All that it takes to produce a virtual oyster is the right neural hardware and large amounts of compute power. A real oyster, grown in an off-world habitat may be a different thing entirely.

There is another point in the story line where Catherine is attacked in virtual reality by an artificial intelligence. Thinking back, it is not clear to me what this entity was and I'm not sure we ever clearly find out (I think I know, but I'm not sure).

Perhaps the complexity and obscurity of the plot are the result of Spin State being Chris Moriarty's first novel. Complex plots are fascinating, but what drives the story is the core story line.

Chris Moriarty's books are densely plotted and based on a great deal of background reading. So, sadly, they are slow to come out. I just bought a copy of Ghost Spin. But after a decade I've found that some of the details faded for me (although the coal/condensate mines stuck in my memory). So I read Spin State again. I liked it even more, although the second time I still found the mix of virtual reality and reality confusing (eating the oysters, as I mentioned above). Chris Moriarty is a rare talent and I was left wondering "who is this woman".

In a lot of way Spin State reminded me of Neuromancer by William Gibson. Fans of Neuromancer have asked Gibson to wrote something else like it. He said that this is not possible. Neuromancer came out of his youth. He pointed out that all of the authority figures were killed off.

In Spin State all of the authority figures are killed. Catherine Li is an angry figure in many ways. A tough girl who is trying to hold it together. A bit like Case or Molly in Neuromancer.

Spin State is great

"Spin State" delivers exactly what is promised in the little blurb printed on the front cover; an interesting and highly original mix of quantum physics, A.I.. FTL, and an enjoyably atypical love story.

The physics revolves around the consequences of the discovery on a distant planet (Compson's World) of a unique material that is a macroscopic Bose-Einstein condensate at room temperature. That means that pieces of this stuff, known as crystal, act as single quantum entitities and taking one piece, (obtained by mining on Compson's World and no where else in the known universe) splitting it in two and separating the two pieces gives an instantaneous method for FTL communication and travel because of stable quantum entanglement.

This is the setting for a murder mystery that also is built around genetically modified humans, clones, superpowerful A.I.s, military mysteries and perhaps most originally, a believable love story between the main character, Catherine Li, and an A.I. named Cohen. Cohen appears in willing hosts who allow him to take control of their bodies for periods of time in exchange for (one supposes) monetary payment.

The story moves quickly, there are red herrings all over the place and unless you are a lot sharper than me, you won't actually figure out why the murder was committed or by whom until very late in the book.

I liked the writing and the ideas, and will certainly give Ms. Moriarty's next book a read.

One of the best sci-fi books you will read

FANTASTIC! I really enjoyed this book from start to finish. In fact, I would say that it is one of the best sci-fi books I have ever read. Most sci-fi and fantasy books just repeat the same clichés over and over again. Moriarty's story of a female soldier and a sentient AI is not one of those other sci-fi stories.

Moriarty creates a believable and deep world the way masters like Herbert and Tolkien have. He has combined good character development with far-future science, an elaborate (future) history, and an exciting action story. I particularly enjoyed the depth of the main character and the emotional demons she wrestled with; this is the kind of human drama that is a standard of regular fiction but almost always absent from science-fiction.

Reading the other reviews here, there seem to be a lot of complaints that the science doesn't work or that the story leaves some gaps. There is some truth to these comments. All I can say is that story kept me going and I never once said to myself: "Well that's just dumb", "Oh that would never work" or "cliché!" There were some parts that I found hard to follow but after all, this is science-FICTION - a good writer leaves much to the imagination. On the other hand, the end of the novel contains a reading list of quantum physics material that makes me feel there is more science here than most books.

The only bad thing I can say about this book is that there isn't a sequel!

About the Author
Isaac Asimov began his Foundation Series at the age of twenty-one, not realizing that it would one day be considered a cornerstone of science fiction. During his legendary career, Asimov penned over 470 books on subjects ranging from science to Shakespeare to history, though he was most loved for his award-winning science fiction sagas, which include the Robot, Empire, and Foundation series. Named a Grand Master of Science Fiction by the Science Fiction Writers of America, Asimov entertained and educated readers of all ages for close to five decasdes. Kindle edition is a watered down disaster

This review is specifically of the Kindle edition, published by Ballantine/Bantam.

The Foundation Trilogy is a wonderful piece of work, but the Kindle edition butchers it! Someone has decided to water down Asimov's prose, eliminating some of the more enjoyable passages of the book. Here are some examples, found by comparison with an old Bantam Doubleday hardcover edition.

Several pages into chapter 3, Salvor Hardin is arguing with the Encyclopedists about the decline of the Empire.

Original: "If you ask me,", he cried, "THE GALAXY IS GOING TO POT!"

Kindle: "If you ask me,", he cried, "THE GALACTIC EMPIRE IS DYING!"

In chapter 5, Hardin is again meeting with the Encyclopedists and discussing the threat received from Anacreon.

Original: The message from Anacreon ... boils down easily and straightforwardly to the unqualified statement ... "You give us what we want in a week, or we beat the hell out of you and take it anyway."

Kindle: The message from Anacreon ... boils down easily and straightforwardly to the unqualified statement ... "You give us what we want in a week, or we take it by force."

I'm going to be asking for a refund.

30 years on -- a great, but different, read

I'm reading the original Foundation trilogy for the 3rd (or maybe 4th?) time, but the first time in at least 20 years. I've got a few points to note, in no particular order:

1) Old science fiction tells us so much about the past. The things they never thought would change -- cigarettes, newspapers, women in the home, microfilm (!) -- show us just how prominent our blind spots can be. And the things they didn't even dream of (most obviously, the internet, but also race and s*xual relations, cell phones, etc.) tell us just how far and how quickly things change.

2) Reading it the first (and 2nd) time through, the young ambitious Federation reminded me of the USA -- young, resourceful, growing, upstarts. Now, I read it and the dying, corrupt, Empire reminds me of the USA. I'm not sure if this is my getting older (and pessimistic) or whether the times have changed so much since the 40s and 50s. In any case, there's an optimism in these books (like a lot of old sci-fi) that has long since passed out of (American?) pop culture.

3) There's a funny disconnect between 1 and 2 -- and I'm not sure where it is. So much has improved for so many, and yet the future now seems more scary than ever. Part of me reads this as escapist fun, part of me reads it to try to exercise my powers of optimism. (Without starting any arguments about current politics or which apocalyptic future I fear, let me say that I grew up in the Cold War with a very real fear of dying in a nuclear war -- the only bright side being that living in DC meant that I'd be incinerated instantly, and not suffer a lingering post-war death. Are any our current fears more likely or more catastrophic than that?)

4) There is little emotional depth in the Foundation. We don't get outsiders or brooding introspection, we learn about the characters through what they do. It reminds me a bit of the Icelandic sagas I just finished reading: lots of who did what, over how many generations -- and while there's little internal monologueing, you see that actions give insight into character. Perhaps it's our blind spot now to to think that how things feel to you is the most important thing in the world.

5) The Mule seems -- to my eyes -- a portent of 1960's. Without giving any spoilers, suddenly everyone sees that people's feelings are far more important and disruptive than any technology. (And the visi sonor seems so close to a depiction of an LSD trip that it makes me wonder what was going on in Asimov's personal life around this time!)

In conclusion, I encourage any old fans to pick up and re-read the series: you'll get something different out of it than the last time.

Classic

It is a massive story told on a massive scale through a series of compelling vignettes. Brilliant work from a brilliant mind. It does show its 1950's origins in things like the ubiquitous use of paper. And then there's the "traditional" and now backward seeming role of women in a male dominated society. But despite its age, the heart of the story remains as strong as ever. No science fiction collection is complete without this series.
