Life imitates art and art scams life in Lynch's debut, a picaresque fantasy that chronicles the career of Locke Lamora—orphan, thief and leader of the Gentlemen Bastards—from the time the Thiefmaker sells Locke to the faking Eyeless Priest up to Locke's latest con of the nobility of the land of Camorr. As in any good caper novel, the plot is littered with obvious and not-so-obvious obstacles, including the secret police of Camorr's legendary Spider and the mysterious assassinations of gang leaders by the newly arrived Gray King. Locke's resilience and wit give the book the tragicomic air of a traditional picaresque, rubbery ethics and all. The villain holds the best moral justification of any of the players. Lynch provides plenty of historical and cultural information reminiscent of new weirdists Steven Erikson and China Miéville, if not quite as outré. The only drawback is that the realistic fullness of the background tends to accentuate the unreality of the melodramatic foreground. (July)

Love this series.

This is the first series of books I read on Kindle, and then immediately bought physical copies, just because I like these books so well. The author is a wordsmith of extreme caliber, crafting some of the most artful dialogue and descriptions I have read in ages. Beyond fun, these books suck you into a whole different world, and spit you out wanting more. Defying the urge to spend pages and pages insulting the intelligence of his readers on dull expositional world building, Scott Lynch instead drops us into a fully crafted world, and lets the reader figure out the nuances and details as they go, thus adding the excitement of discovery to his already fantastic work. Each installment has left me eager to read the next.

Clever and diverting, but it took me a while to warm to Locke Lamora.

This fantasy tale is clever and diverting from its opening pages, and remains clever and diverting throughout. The setting is distinctive rather than generic. The characters are flamboyantly memorable. The plot is intricate and well-executed, switching back and forth in time without ever losing my interest in either of the two main story threads. I am looking forward to reading more by Scott Lynch.
That said, it took 145 pages before I warmed to the main character, Locke Lamora. I am the kind of reader who much prefers to like the protagonist, yet who doesn't give them the benefit of the doubt and like them purely by default. I need a reason, even a slight one, to like them. (I read the start of the book in a somewhat distracted state during a long plane flight, so it's possible that I overlooked a moment when Locke Lamora helped an injured baby rabbit--or some such--before page 145.) Thereafter I enjoyed the book a lot. I was gripped when I should be gripped, sad when I should be sad, and I am now tempted to push the sequel close to the top of my huge to-read stack.

One of a kind!

The book is brilliant. The opening chapters greet us with an introduction to a young man named Locke Lamora. He is a crafty, honest little thief who is so clever he manages to shut down an entire city. Children aren't revered or cared for and after a plague left many orphaned, the city is over run with starving children. Where there are young able bodies, there are opportunists who will use children to help make profits. This is how young Locke lives during a time in his early years, under the care of a lowly thief. Six-year old Locke, having driven this boss mad with his schemes and penchant for ignoring rules, is turned over to a priest.
From here the story explodes into the wonderful tale of "The Lies of Locke Lamora". This book is the start of the best con men tale ever published. The characters are funny, clever and rambunctious. They live in a land crafted by elves, run by a gang boss, supported by the elite rich and monarchical politicians. Lynch's story is so well-told and maintained I hope the series continues on. There is no series like it. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
