The Smoke Thief, by Shana Abe

For centuries they’ve lived in secret among northern England’s green and misted hills. Creatures of extraordinary beauty, power, and sensuality, they possess the ability to shape-shift from human to dragon and back again. Now their secret–and their survival–is threatened by a temptation that will break every boundary....

Dubbed the Smoke Thief, a daring jewel thief is confounding the London police. His wealthy victims claim the master burglar can walk through walls and vanish into thin air. But Christoff, the charismatic Marquess of Langford, knows the truth: the thief is no ordinary human but a “runner” who’s fled Darkfrith without permission. As Alpha leader of the dra´kon, it’s Kit’s duty to capture the fugitive before the secrets of the tribe are revealed to mortals. But not even Kit suspects that the Smoke Thief could be a woman.

Clarissa Rue Hawthorne knew her dangerous exploits would attract the attention of the dra´kon. But she didn’t expect Christoff himself to come to London, dangling the tribe’s most valuable jewel–the Langford Diamond–as bait. For as long as she could remember, Rue had lived the life of a halfling–half dra´kon, half mortal–and an outcast in both worlds. She’d always loved the handsome and willful Kit from the only place it was safe: from afar. But now she was no longer the shy, timid girl she’d once been. She was the first woman capable of making the Turn in four generations. So why did she still feel the same dizzying sense of vulnerability whenever he was near?

From the moment he saw her, Kit knew that the alluring and powerful beauty was every bit his Alpha equal and destined to be his bride. And by the harsh laws of the dra´kon, Rue knew that she was the property of the marquess. But they will risk banishment and worse for a chance at something greater. For now Rue is his prisoner, the diamond has disappeared, and she’s made the kind of dangerous proposition a man like Kit cannot resist....In this bewitching novel, Shana Abé transports us into a world of exhilarating romance and magic.

CHAPTER ONE

Chasen Manor
Darkfrith, England
1737

The Right Honourable Christoff Rene Ellery Langford, Earl of Chasen, was bored.

He had decided to demonstrate this fact by slouching in his chair, his legs outstretched and his blond head turned idly away from everyone else in his father's study. One sun-darkened cheek was propped languidly upon his fist; his green eyes were hooded, masked with brown lashes. He listened to his father talk with the haughty, brooding air common to either the young or the powerful.

Kit, as it happened, was both. Sixteen years old and well-acknowledged as the heir to the tribe, he endured these meetings as his duty. He did not speak. He did not bother to meet the eyes of the other men present. When he looked up from his boots he chose to contemplate the view from the Tudor windows, the summer lush hills and rich black trees. The beckoning woods.

He listened to the same debate the council had at every meeting now. He could practically predict, verbatim, who would say what.

"The safety of the tribe is paramount. We must ensure our survival."

Parrish Grady again. The man never let up. Eldest member of the council, blue-eyed, sharp-toothed. Kit was beginning to consider him his own personal nemesis, if for no other reason than these meetings crawled on hours longer than they would without him.

Outside, just over a distant hill, appeared a flock of girls. About Kit's age, white skirts, frilled aprons, straw hats with ties that dangled in the wind. A few carried armfuls of flowers. He watched them come closer.

"Naturally, Parrish, our survival is paramount." Kit's father, the marquess. "No one debates that."

"We need a full-blood female!"

"I'd say we've been doin' our best there," retorted Rufus Booke, brash and newly wed, "though mayhap you'd prefer to check our beds every night."

Kit snorted back a laugh. He felt his father's gaze flick to him, then away.

"Aye, we need a female," the Marquess of Langford agreed. "But we do not appear to have one. Yet. There are several young tribeswomen on the verge of the rebirth. We may hope one of them will complete the Turn."

"Hope," repeated Grady, derisive. "Four generations it's been, and no female to make the Turn! What will happen to us--all of us--when it becomes impossible for the menfolk as well?"

Silence greeted this. It was the great, simmering fear among the tribe, that the Gifts would be taken. That their powers would fade.

"We cannot force our fate," said the marquess, harder now. "We all understand that. We are what we are. Our more immediate concern is the perimeter of the forest. There have been signs of recent disturbance, not our own. Strangers are prowling our lands. Christoff reported horse tracks up to Hawkshead Point."

"Hawkshead? But that's not even ours! What the devil is the boy doing all the way out there? We have rules! He left the boundary!"

Again, the distinctive prickle of his father's gaze. Kit allowed himself the slightest curl of his lips.

"Let us focus on the matter at hand," said the marquess smoothly. "Hawkshead is adjacent to our boundaries. If someone has chanced that far . . ."

The girls had paused in a soft valley between the hills, clutching their hats as the breeze turned brisker. Sunlight showed honeyed locks flying and flaxen, strawberry blond and ginger red. Four girls, smiling and chattering amid the green. Someone loosed her flowers, and the August wind blew them into bright confusion.

Parrish Grady thumped a fist on the arm of his chair. "The boy's too wild, even for our kind. He needs to be reined in. You know it yourself, my lord."

Kit stared a little harder at the girls, his eyes narrowed.

"Thank you, Mr. Grady, but I take the responsibility of raising my son as my own."

"If he is to be Alpha--"

"There is no if," hissed the marquess, coming to his feet. "You will do well to understand that right now."

Silence fell once more across the study. One of the men cleared his throat, nervous, but said nothing.

Outside, the flower girls had gone very still. The strawberry blonde turned her face into the breeze--and the other three did the same. Kit recognized them now, Fanny and Suzanne, daughters of the smith, Liza from the mill. And Melanie, their leader. Melanie, of the apple cheeks and soft petal lips. Melanie, with her quick, cunning smile. He stirred in his chair, leaning casually on his elbow to see what they did.

Sky, grass, woods . . . and a shape in the trees. Another girl.
"There is the matter of the runners," volunteered a new voice, George Winston.

"Aye, the runners," began the murmurs across the room, and the marquess sat down again.

The woodsgirl realized that she had been discovered. She stood frozen as well, smaller than the other four, pressed up against the trunk of a tree. Kit could make out one pale hand against the bark, fingers splayed. He could not see her face.

Very, very slowly, she began to ease backward.

Melanie had turned to the others. She was speaking. She was taking off her hat.

". . . precisely as I said. We cannot risk further incidents with outsiders. We were fortunate enough to capture the Williams boy before he had gotten too far, but the next time may be the time that he--or some other hotheaded young fool--manages to evade us. I shudder to think of what might have happened had he made it past the shire. I need to have a word with his parents again. And then the gamekeepers, I think . . ."

The woodsgirl had managed hardly a step. Perhaps she hoped the others were bluffing; Kit, however, knew Melanie better than that. With infinite care the girl slid back another step, and then Kit caught her profile. It was that lass, the scrawny one always ducking from crowds, peering out of shadows . . . what was her name? He frowned, trying in his mind to place her amid the intricate shoots and branches of the tribe families. He'd seen her mostly around the village, brown-haired, white-skinned. Timid. Mousy, even, if such a word could be applied to any member of their kin.

Melanie's group began to walk toward her and the woodsmouse froze again--then lost her nerve. She skipped back. It was all Melanie needed.

The four girls broke into a sprint.

Kit straightened in his chair, forgetting his father's meeting. Four against one was hardly sporting, especially as the prey was so much younger than the hunters. The mouse vanished from view, swiftly followed by the others. He had glimpses of gowns flashing through the trees, and then nothing.

Calm settled back upon the forest, unbroken, silent as winter snow.

Kit uncrossed his ankles, considering. He'd seen the little mouse more and more of late, now that he thought about it. Always quiet, always alone.

If she had any sense, she'd head for the river. They might lose her scent there--

"Christoff? Christoff! Are you listening, boy?"

"Aye," Kit answered, with just that trace of surliness guaranteed to send color into his father's cheeks. "The perimeter, the runners. Dire peril to the tribe, et cetera."

"How gratifying to have your attention." The marquess thinned his lips. "Perhaps, then, you might have a suggestion for the council?"

For the first time Kit looked around at the gathered faces fixed upon him, tanned and pale and avid eyes.

"Regarding the matter of your bride?" prompted his father softly.

Kit opened his mouth to speak. But just then the woods erupted; the young girl hurtled out of the trees in a flap of skirts and mad streaming hair, her face flushed, cutting a sharp angle across the perfectly manicured rear lawn.

Kit stood, and all the men turned.

"What the--oh--it's--"

"The Hawthorne gel," said George. "Halfling. Clara, Clareta--"

"Clarissa," supplied Kit, in a spark of memory. "And Mel," he added dryly, as the other four emerged at her heels, gaining.

"Ah." The marquess took his seat again with his back to the window. "Halfling. Well, then, no matter. Gentlemen, shall we continue?"

But Kit remained standing, watching the lass run.

She crept into the cottage kitchen on her toes but, as usual, wasn't furtive enough to fool her mother.

"Clarissa? Is that you?"

"Yes, Mama."

She ought to have known she couldn't slip in and hide; her mother's senses were far too keen for that. Or perhaps it was the draft from the back door that gave her away. Either way, she thought glumly, she was caught now.

"What are you doing, child?"

"Washing up."

She dipped her hands into the chipped basin on the counter, scrubbing, watching the water turn pink with blood. She found the dishcloth and ran it over her face, wiping off the dirt, more blood.

"Mama, would you like tea?" she called.

"Yes, dear. That would be lovely."

She set the kettle to boil and scooped the tea leaves from this morning's breakfast, still damp, back into the teapot. She tossed the wash water out over the back steps--sending a quick, nervous look around the garden first--and then refilled it from the cistern.

The kettle began to steam.

By the pot of geraniums on the windowsill was the polished tin oval she had given her mother last Christmas, hung up by a yellow ribbon. It showed the kitchen in dusky gray and always made her face into a long, funny shape that reminded her of a fish, but it was still a better mirror than the windowpanes.

Clarissa examined her reflection critically: her hair was snarled, the white tucker at her coll...

Get it. Right now. Do iiiiiiit.

I reread this book every few years and am always surprised by something I missed before. Abe's writing is clear and supple, like the caress of smoke that draws you down the plotline. Her characters seem real enough to reach out and touch, even supporting characters, which is a feat in itself!

Boring
By Amazon Customer
I'm not hating this book, but i certainly don't love it. The plot is thin, the heroine annoying, the hero an manipulative ass. Their actions doesn't make sense and the romance only builds on their amazing "chemistry". Would not recommend.

Amazing dragonlore and romance
By Kyra_Athena
This book is phenomenal. Shana Abe's Last Mermaid was wonderful and this one is too. The plot flows and no details are left hanging. The writing style allows you to be right there with the characters. Clarissa Rue grew up an outcast among the drakon (dragon shape-shifters) being half human. At 17, she became the only female in 4 generations to be able to turn making her the Alpha female and mate to the Alpha male whether she likes it or not. Clarissa stages her death and escapes to London where she is an adept thief using the transitional mist (smoke) of the drakon and her skill with disguises. She earns the name the Smoke Thief and attracts the attention of the Alpha male and the rest of the tribe. Nonetheless, Alpha meets Alpha...My only disappointment was that the book wasn't longer. The size is probably 1/3 of the Last Mermaid. The last few lines in the epilogue hint at a future drakon novel though.

A very good continuation of the Star Wars Trilogy
By A Customer
While this is a good continuation of the Star Wars Trilogy, it is strictly for younger readers. When I was in 4th grade, these were my favorite books. However, I'm now in 7th grade and these books don't appeal to me nearly as much as they used to.

The Assassins Gallery, by David L. Robbins

New Year’s Eve, 1945. The assassin steps out of the Atlantic Ocean in the middle of a raging nor’easter. Cool and efficient, she’s a weapon of war superbly trained in the ancient arts of subterfuge and murder. And even though she’s outnumbered, she’s got one major advantage: No one knows she’s coming.

Professor Mikhal Lammeck’s specialty is the history and weaponry of assassins. But even Lammeck is caught off guard when the Secret Service urgently requests his help: A gruesome double murder and suicide in Massachusetts has set off alarm bells. It’s only a hunch, but all too soon Lammeck suspects the unthinkable.

In the waning days of the war, someone wants one last shot to alter history. An assassin is headed to Washington, D.C., to kill the most important soldier of them all: the U.S. commander in chief. As Lammeck and a killer at the top of her profession circle the streets of the capital in the hunt for FDR, one of them will attempt to kill the world’s most powerful man; the other, to save him. And between them, for an instant, history will hang in the balance. . . .

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Set in 1945 near the end of WWII, Robbins's daring thriller opens with a brutal, brilliantly described double murder on the beach near Newburyport, Mass. From that scene to the end of the novel, the author's sure-handed control of his material never lets up, aided by his clear focus on the killer, a woman named "Judith," and the man assigned to solve the murders, professor Mikhal Lammeck, an expert in the methods of assassins. As Lammeck's investigations take him up and down the East Coast and, increasingly, to Washington, D.C., he comes to realize that someone may be trying to assassinate President Roosevelt. Robbins (War of the Rats) has an uncanny ability to provide just the right amount of historical detail without overwhelming the plot. This talent, coupled with superior characterization and a masterful, direct writing style will provide thriller lovers with one of their best reads of the year. The powerful climax deserves the term "heart-stopping." (Aug.)

Historian Vs Master Assassin
By Michael L. Slavin
Mikhal Lammeck is a history professor, though an American, he is living and teaching students in Scotland. His speciality is assassination. Both from a historical perspective as well as teaching his military students how to operate as assassin killers. The time frame of the book is January 1945-May 1945. Judith, a persian master assassin, is put ashore on a Massachusetts beach after having come in on a raft subsequent to disembarking from a submarine. Her mission is to kill President Roosevelt. I love these assassin books going back to Day of the Jackal and Sean Flannery's Counter-Strike. I always have rooted for the assassin. Lammeck is contacted by a former student of his who now works for the secret service and returns to the U.S. to help protect Roosevelt. It seems as though Judith is always a step ahead of the authorities. This is a fine read. The only reason I give it four stars is that it didn't seem to have that can't put it down quality. Particularly some of the passages related to Lammeck's pursuit of Judith. The scenes specifically related to Juith are first rate. Nevertheless it's definitely worthwhile.

From Publishers Weekly
A series of letters that form a scrapbook for an as-yet unborn child provides the framing device for Yurk's sugary debut novel, which attempts to trace Sarah Strickland's difficult journey toward a hopeful future after her perfect marriage crumbles in a devastating loss. Madly in love with Gavin, her husband of five years, 28-year-old Sarah yearns to have a child. Gavin is unsure about parenthood at first, but eventually agrees to Sarah's blandishments. Both he and Sarah are ecstatic when she conceives, but their happiness is short-lived: on New Year's Eve, Gavin dies when a truck collides with their car. Between coping with her snobbish mother and negotiating her complex relationship with "best friend since kindergarten" Calista, Sarah proceeds mawkishly through the stages of loss: anger, pain, denial, isolation, guilt and, finally, hope and acceptance. Predictably, she learns that help can come from surprising quarters and that "the love you have for your own child is a fiercer kind of love. I think it might be the kind of love that saves you." Despite the contemporary Seattle setting, the characters frequently seem old-fashioned, and they sometimes speak in cliches. Sarah's direct address to her fetus is disconcerting at best ("I know that you are barely a bundle of cells, a grain of rice, but within you floats such magic... our little girl. I can't stop imagining you as sugar and spice"). Readers who enjoy novel-length Hallmark cards will be as happy as smile buttons sitting on velvet hearts. Readers Companion available on-line. (May)

From Booklist
Sarah Strickland begins writing to her unborn daughter even before she becomes pregnant. Exuberant in her love for Gavin, her husband of six years, Sarah is thrilled at the prospect of welcoming their daughter into the family. Everything changes suddenly when Gavin is killed by a drunk driver. Devastated, Sarah continues her correspondence with the child growing inside her, pouring out her grief and fear, the journal an outlet for her pain and anger. In the months following Gavin's death, Sarah isolates herself from the world, even her lifelong friend, Calista, who tries desperately to help and understand. Sarah often reflects on the source of warmth and wisdom in her own childhood--her Nana Cecille--and eventually is able to celebrate again the "magic of infinite possibilities" Nana embodies for her. This debut novel could be insipid or sappy; it is neither. Sarah's messages to her unborn daughter are endearing and often hilarious, a fictionalized account of intense grief that may be as helpful as any study of the topic. Grace Fill

Inspiring and touching
By A Customer
I sat down to read this novel not really knowing what it could possibly be about. As I continued to read, I found I could not possibly put this book down. I read it in one afternoon. It was too close to home, and I have a yearning to speak to this wonderful woman Amy Yurk. I lost my brother a year and a half ago. He was 27. He and his soul mate had just had a beautiful baby boy. They had their future all planned out and were so excited to begin thier long future together. So they thought. One day after their son turned two months old, my brother died suddenly. Like Sarah, I feel much of what she feels about her loss, even though my loss is my brother. I feel that somehow, someone has spoken to me through this wonderful novel. A woman's search for meaning through her tragic loss, while anticipating the long awaited birth of her, and her husband's child. All the while, wondering if she is fit to be a good mother and struggling with life's uncertanties. I highly reccomend this novel to everyone. It gives a new meaning on what life is and how our loved ones continue to live on after their life here on earth is fulfilled.

The kind of love that saves you
By A Customer
After losing someone very close to me, this book was given to me by a friend with the hope that it could help me come to terms with my grief. Although it's not a book I might have ordinarily picked up, I was quickly unable to put it down. The fact that someone could write so honestly and true about what it means to lose someone made me feel not so alone. And the thought someday everything might be okay is an incredibly wonderful thing to keep with you. This book is an amazing read without coming off as pandering or trite and I wonder why Oprah hasn't picked it up yet. I highly recommend it to anyone who has ever been put through tragedy of losing someone.

This book is outstanding!
By A Customer
I cannot remember the last time I was so moved by a book. I read this entire book in one afternoon and could not stop thinking about it for days afterward. The way that Amy Yurk describes the profound sense of loss one feels at the sudden death of a spouse is astounding. She describes the loss not only in terms of the huge void that is left when a spouse dies, but also in terms of the small losses that are felt every day when you are forced to come to that realization that you will never be able to talk to, see, or touch your husband ever again. My mother lost her soul mate when my father died suddenly at the age of 45. I know that she experienced many of the things described in this book, such as waking up first thing in the morning and for that split second, thinking everything is ok. The author gave me a deeper understanding of my mother's loss from a woman's perspective, not just a daughter's perspective. I think that this is why the book touched me so deeply. It allowed me to share in Sarah's deep love for her husband and their unborn child, grieve at her loss, and feel her strength as she struggled to begin the healing process. This book is amazing. I highly recommend it.

From the Corner of His Eye, by Dean Koontz

Dean Koontz has been called "America's most popular suspense novelist,"* but that only begins to describe the rich variety and endless invention that characterize his work. Critics hail his impeccable craft and the artistry that has inspired the devotion of millions of fans around the world. He is unique among contemporary writers, venturing far beyond traditional boundaries to explore our deepest fears and most transcendent aspirations.

Now, in From the Corner of His Eye, Koontz brings together his most powerful themes to draw readers into a spellbinding world made by a master at the top of his form -- a story rich in triumph and tragedy, joy and terror, love, hate, and profound meaning, played out by perhaps the most unforgettable cast of characters he has yet created.

Bartholomew Lampion is born in Bright Beach, California, on a day of tragedy and terror, when the lives of everyone in his family are changed forever. Remarkable events accompany his birth, and everyone agrees that his unusual eyes are the most beautiful they have ever seen.

On this same day, a thousand miles away, a ruthless man learns that he has a mortal enemy named Bartholomew. He doesn't know who Bartholomew is, but he embarks on a search that will become the purpose of his life. If ever he finds the right Bartholomew, he will deal mercilessly with him.

And in San Francisco, a girl is born, the result of a violent rape. Her survival is miraculous, and her destiny is mysteriously linked to the fates of Barty and the man who stalks him.

At the age of three, Barty Lampion is blinded when surgeons reluctantly remove his eyes to save him from a fast-spreading cancer. As the growing boy copes with his blindness and proves to be a prodigy, his mother, an exceptional woman, counsels him that all things happen for a reason, that there is meaning even in his suffering, and that he will affect the lives of people yet unknown to him in ways startling and profound.

At thirteen, Bartholomew regains his sight. How he regains it, why he regains it, and what happens as his amazing life unfolds results in a breathtaking journey of courage, heart-stopping suspense, and high adventure. His mother once told him that every person's life has an effect on every other person's, in often unknowable ways, and Barty's eventful life indeed entwines with others in ways that will astonish and move everyone who reads his story.

People magazine has said that Dean Koontz has the "power to scare the daylights out of us." In this, perhaps the most thrilling, suspenseful, and emotionally powerful work of his critically acclaimed career, Koontz does that and far more. He has created a compulsive page-turner that will have you at the edge of your seat, a narrative tour de force that will change the way you yourself look at the world.

Amazon.com Review
Horrormeister Koontz looks heavenward for inspiration in his newest suspense thriller, which is chock-full of signs, portents, angels, and one somewhat second-rate devil, a murky and undercharacterized guy named Junior Cain who throws his beloved wife off a fire tower on an Oregon mountain and spends the rest of the novel waiting for the retribution that will surely come. But not before a series of tragedies ensues that convince Junior that someone or something named Bartholomew is out to exact vengeance for that crime and the series of other murders that follow.

Bartholomew's own troubles begin with his birth, which transpires moments after his father is killed in a traffic accident as he is taking his wife to the hospital, and continue with the loss of his eyes at the tender age of 3. Young Bartholomew has visionary gifts, though to his mother, a nice lady who's renowned for her pie-making abilities as well as her sweetly innocent nature, he's just a particularly smart kid who can read and write before his second birthday. Eventually, Bartholomew regains his sight, Junior Cain gets his comeuppance, and fate conspires to bring love into the Pie Lady's life, reward the faithful, and put a happy ending on this genre-bending tale. Koontz will no doubt rocket right to the top of the bestseller list with this inventive, if somewhat slower-paced, read. --Jane Adams

From Publishers Weekly
The premise behind Koontz's new novel is the same that buoyed Michael Crichton's TimelineDthat there exist multitudes of alternate universes, each varying only slightly from the next. Whereas Crichton used the idea to generate high adventure, however, Koontz employs it to create powerful emotion tinged with spiritual wonder. That emotion, which rocks characters and will shake readers, marks this as one of Koontz's most affecting novelsDand he's written a lot of them. But there's else in this fitfully suspenseful, sprawling story of good vs. evil that will leave readers wishing Koontz would make better friends with his delete key. Above all, there's the villain, Junior Cain, whose opening homicidal act will shock readers like ice water on the spine. Koontz enlivens dashing Junior with lots of neat touchesDe.g., he develops psychosomatic afflictions (vomiting, boils) after each killDbut Junior seems built from the outside in, more a pile of tics than a full-fledged human. On the side of good, the characters are more engaging, especially two psychospiritually gifted children and Thomas Vanadium, the magic-working priest-turned-cop who gets on Junior's case like a pit bull. Vanadium's lust for justice will galvanize readers, as will the trials and triumphs of the children, particularly the boy, Bartholomew, who Junior seesDin one working out of Koontz's theme of the interconnectedness of all lifeDas his mortal enemy and seeks to destroy. The potency of that theme and Bartholomew's wisdom in the face of personal tragedy provide the novel with great uplift, in spite of its wildly convoluted story line and excessive verbiage. (Dec. 26) Forecast: Note the pub date: Koontz has the week after Christmas all to himself. Plans include major ad/promo, 12-copy displays, simultaneous BDD Audio and Random large-print edition and, most importantly, a preview excerpt in each copy of the mass market of False Memory, on sale one month before. Like Koontz's other novels, this will be a serious bestsellerDperhaps even a #1.

From Library Journal
Koontz's (Seize the Night) latest spellbinder chronicles the lives of three unique individuals. Bartholomew Lampion, born under miraculous yet tragic circumstances, has the most unusual and mesmerizing eyes ever seen. As he grows, he begins to exhibit abilities that defy physics. Angel, born in another city at the same time as Bartholomew, is also a miracle child; as she grows, she demonstrates the ability to see the world as it really exists. At the time of their births, ruthless and cunning Junior dreams that someone named Bartholomew will lead to his downfall. While attempting to find the nemesis he knows only by name, Junior is relentlessly pursued by a police detective. The three lives intertwine as this saga barrels along toward their inevitable confrontation. Though over 600 pages, the book never seems long. The characters are vivid and emotionally exciting, creating a fast and compelling read. Highly recommended for all public libraries.

but good read and fast moving
By leigh lombard
I've never read a book before where a passage actually made me say "WHAT just happened?" and have to go back and read the passage again because it was so surprising!!
Very complex story with many characters woven together, many not until close to the end.
Long book, but good read and fast moving.
The only reason there are 4 stars and not 5 because some people died that I really really didn't want to, and the end sort of dragged a little but did close things down.
The infinite universes theory made me think of Big Bang Theory and Sheldon saying in some universes he'd be a clown made of cotton candy, lol. Kind of lost me on that one, but it was still very interesting and, of course, well-written.

Summer of Roses, by Luanne Rice

Few novelists today write with the power to move our hearts, quicken our souls, and enrich our lives like Luanne Rice. In New York Times bestsellers such as Dance with Me, Beach Girls, and The Secret Hour, she vividly captures the dramas that make all the difference in love and families. Now, revisiting the remarkable characters introduced in her bestselling Summer’s Child, she brings full circle one of her most compelling explorations of the human heart…all the many ways it can be broken…and the magic that can make it whole again.

Their lives were a tapestry woven together by love and loss, tragedy and hope. On the windswept coast of Nova Scotia, Lily and her eight-year-old daughter, Rose, are struggling to embrace a new life even as Lily tries to let go of painful memories of the past. Among the lives that will touch theirs are those of Liam Neill, a dedicated teacher living in self-imposed isolation; Maeve Jameson, mourning the loss of a granddaughter she devoted her life to protecting; and Mark Murphy, a dogged police detective obsessed with a woman who vanished years ago–who may or may not have found what he seeks in a tiny, out-of-the-way maritime village.

During this eventful summer of roses, the paths–and fates–of these unforgettable characters will intersect in ways that none of them could ever expect–and shape a future none of them could possibly foresee. For each of them it will be a time of renewal and transformation that will circle inevitably to a past left behind, a mystery unsolved, and a love reclaimed. Summer of Roses is vintage Luanne Rice–a novel that celebrates the ties of family, the passion of lovers, and the deep, unbreakable bonds that hold us together through all the seasons of our lives.

From Publishers Weekly
The New York Times bestselling author of Dance With Me and Beach Girls revisits characters from Summer's Child in this examination of the emotional fallout of battered woman syndrome. When Mara Jameson thinks about her wedding, she painfully and vividly recalls her betrothed, Edward Hunter, the Harvard rugby player with a "blank yet somehow charged" stare. Mara ran away after Edward began abusing her and shortly before she had her daughter, Rose. Now, nine years later, Mara's living as Lily Malone in an isolated cottage near Cape Hawk, Nova Scotia, with Liam Neill, a member of the village's pre-eminent family. When Mara-cum-Lily learns Maeve Jameson, her grandmother, is comatose after suffering an undiagnosed "neurological event," she, believing Edward was involved, comes out of hiding to try to save her. Edward, ever the epitome of evil, soon hears the news of Lily's return and welcomes her back with an incendiary custody battle. Back in Cape Hawk, Lily's best friend Marisa, also a battered wife, longs to be reunited with her estranged sister in the Fallen Angels, their college fiddle and song duo. Prolific romance novelist Rice handles the complex plot with aplomb so all her likable characters win in the end and Edward, naturally, gets his comeuppance.

From Booklist
Rice continues the compelling story she started in Summer's Child (2005). Lily and her nine-year-old daughter, Rose, have survived by hiding from her husband in Cape Hawk, Nova Scotia, where she found true love with oceanographer Liam Neill. Now Rose has had her final surgery for her heart and is on the mend, but Lily must travel to Connecticut to care for Maeve, her beloved grandmother, who is in the hospital in a coma. There Lily must confront the brute who drove her away from her beloved home. She finds unexpected support from those she abandoned years ago and takes strength from her resilient daughter and loyal Liam. Rice gives her readers an in-depth look at the devastation abuse causes to both the primary victim and her loved ones while simultaneously illuminating the healing that comes from love and loving relationships. From the Inside Flap
Few novelists today write with the power to move our hearts, quicken our souls, and enrich our lives like Luanne Rice. In "New York Times bestsellers such as "Dance with Me, Beach Girls, and "The Secret Hour, she vividly captures the dramas that make all the difference in love and families. Now, revisiting the remarkable characters introduced in her bestselling "Summer's Child, she brings full circle one of her most compelling explorations of the human heart...all the many ways it can be broken...and the magic that can make it whole again.
Their lives were a tapestry woven together by love and loss, tragedy and hope. On the windswept coast of Nova Scotia, Lily and her eight-year-old daughter, Rose, are struggling to embrace a new life even as Lily tries to let go of painful memories of the past. Among the lives that will touch theirs are those of Liam Neill, a dedicated teacher living in self-imposed isolation; Maeve Jameson, mourning the loss of a granddaughter she devoted her life to protecting; and Mark Murphy, a dogged police detective obsessed with a woman who vanished years ago-who may or may not have found what he seeks in a tiny, out-of-the-way maritime village.
During this eventful summer of roses, the paths-and fates-of these unforgettable characters will intersect in ways that none of them could ever expect-and shape a future none of them could possibly foresee. For each of them it will be a time of renewal and transformation that will circle inevitably to a past left behind, a mystery unsolved, and a love reclaimed. "Summer of Roses is vintage Luanne Rice-a novel that celebrates the ties of family, the passion of lovers, and the deep, unbreakable bonds that hold ustogether through all the seasons of our lives.

Doesn't stand on its own
By Tracy Vest
When she discovers that her granny is sick, Lily realizes she must come out of hiding to see her. Nine years earlier, she fled her hometown Of Hubbard's Point after years of abuse at the hands of her husband, Edward. She asks her lover, Liam to spirit daughter Rose away so that Edward cannot find her. But soon Edward discovers that the wife and daughter he thought were gone are alive and well, and he plots to take vengeance, and soon a nasty custody battle is underway.

Working to help Lily out of the mess is Patrick Murphy, the detective that was investigating her "murder," and found her alive instead in Canada, as well as another of Edward's wives, Marisa, who also fled to Nova Scotia.

While the story ties up the loose ends of "Summer's Child," this story has difficulty standing on its own, as the majority of the back story is contained in another source. Lost is the love and longing between main protagonists, Liam and Lily, although the love story of Marisa and Patrick is finally played out. Combining the two would have made for a much more compelling and cohesive novel.

A great sequal to Summer's Child
By A Customer
Nine years have passed since a then pregnant pixie nee Mara Jameson fled her Hubbard's Point Connecticut home and the abuse of her spouse Edward Hunter for the sake of her unborn child. She changes her name to Lily Malone, relocates to remote Cape Hawk, Nova Scotia, opened up In Stitch, and raised her ailing (heart condition) daughter Rose by herself until Dr. Liam Neill entered their lives.

Now Mara has come home accompanied by her child and her beloved Liam because her ailing granny in Shoreline Hospital needs her though she knows Edward will find out and probably come for her with hatred in his heart. When Dr. Kirkland informs her that the unconscious granny suffers from carbon monoxide poisoning, she concludes Edward tried to kill her. She knows Edward will come for Rose using legal means, manipulating the media as the deserted hurt spouse who is whispered by many as wife killer and other deadlier methods at his disposal to achieve what he wants, the destruction of Mara.

This terrific suspense sequel to the SUMMER'S CHILD continues the tale of Lily returning to the life she fled almost a decade ago courageously knowing the risk she takes. The story line is character driven by brave people not just the heroine and Liam, but others to include a surprising courtroom twist. Though Edward is a tarnished loser, something in his gene pool allows him to select intrepid women and sire brave offspring. SUMMER OF ROSES is a terrific thriller that can be read alone, but is enhanced when perused back to back with its delightful predecessor.

A Good Sequel to Summer's Child
By Nancy R. Katz
Shortly before I read Summer's Child, I learned a second book by Luanne Rice was to be published a couple of weeks later. And much to my happiness I also learned that the second book, Summer of Roses, was going to be a sequel to Summer's Child. Since Luanne Rice is one of my very favorite writers, I ran to the store the first day Summer's Child was on the shelves and immediately began reading it. Unfortunately I literally gulped down the book. And what a shame since this book was so very good I should have savored each page. But I hardly had the chance because it was as it the pages turned themselves till the end which found me sobbing. And again when Summer of Roses was available I wasted no time but again bought it and almost immediately read the second title. I wouldn't want anyone to misunderstand what I am about to say because I did enjoy Summer of Roses and it would be hard not to coma pre the two books, but I do think that Summer's Child was the better of the two reads. And now I seriously wonder why the two books were published when it might have been possible to write one longer book.

Lily Malone, along with Liam Neill and her daughter return home to hubbard's pint, Connecticut, to care for Lily's ailing grandmother. Lily continues to be wary of her ex husband who knows nothing about the birth of Rose. But when he learns that Rose is Lily's child and the dates match, he begins legal proceedings to find out if in fact she is his daughter.

And while this is happening in Connecticut,, at Nova Scotia, Marisa is reunited with her sister Sam. And it seems as though Patrick Murphy, who unrelentingly searched for Lily, is falling in love with Marisa and she with him too.

In recent years Luanne Rice's books feature some of the same characters from previous books in minor roles. Its always nice to revisit with these people and also become involved in Rice's new characters as well. Summer of Roses was a worthwhile read and perhaps it suffered because I loved Summer's Child so much and few sequels ever live up to my first read if I have loved the first one. When it comes to Luanne Rice's books, I often say that even a so so read from Luanne Rice is better than most.

Now once again I am looking forward to the next Luanne Rice book since I have read all of them. But now I don't have to wait too long to revisit a book which I loved since one of Rice's books, Beach Girls, has been adapted as a TV movie for cable and will be on this weekend. I do hope that all who read this review will have an opportunity to read Lane Rice if they don't already. She hardly ever fails to entertain me with her settings and characters who I feel after reading one of her books are my good friends.

The Undertaker's Widow, by Phillip M. Margolin

A cold-blooded murder.  A beautiful suspect.  An honest judge forced to do the unthinkable.

New York Times bestselling author Phillip Margolin is a master of legal suspense.  In this explosive novel, a simple case of self-defense becomes a nightmare in which justice itself is held hostage.

Judge Richard Quinn is young, idealistic, and honest to a fault.  That's why he's handed the most sensational homicide case in Oregon history.  Locked in a race for the U.S.  Senate, Ellen Crease gunned down the intruder who murdered her wealthy husband.  In a single, brutal instant she became a widow, a victim, and a hero.

Yet disturbing questions remain.  What secrets did the man who started his fortune running mortuaries keep that might have cost him his life? What about the son frozen out of his will? Or his wife's political enemies? And what about Ellen Crease herself?

Soon it becomes clear that a deadly plot of murder, blackmail, passion, and double cross is unfolding around Judge Richard Quinn.  And unless he breaks the rules, justice will not only be blind, it will be the final victim.

Amazon.com Review
In this legal thriller, a young judge in Portland, Oregon, struggles to save his marriage and his career after he becomes personally involved in the murder case he's adjudicating. The judge, Richard Quinn, is a deeply principled man who has proven himself an honorable and fair-minded public servant. When an extremely wealthy undertaker is murdered in his mansion in the West Hills of town, Quinn is chosen to preside over the case. The dead man's widow, Ellen Crease, is a driven state congressional representative who is running for a seat in the United States Senate. She's a shapely, pistol-packing Republican and a former cop. She's also a suspect, as is the dead man's underachieving son. Crease's political enemies also appear to be involved in the intrigue, but it's difficult to tell. After someone connected to the case tries to blackmail the judge for an extramarital misstep, Quinn decides to take matters into his own hands. He does some investigating, shares his discoveries with people who seem to be trustworthy (but aren't), and puts himself in harm's way.

It's interesting to follow Quinn as he grapples with the ethical issues of the case. When the blackmailers want him to tip the scales of justice one way, he considers tipping them the other direction. There is also something inherently diverting about observing a basically good man who is helplessly mired in a whole heap of trouble. Throughout the book, Quinn keeps stumbling into mortal danger and confiding in all the wrong people, digging himself deeper and deeper in trouble. --Jill Marquis

From Library Journal
Best known for his stunning thriller Gone but Not Forgotten (LJ 8/1/93), Margolin disappoints in this new novel. Wealthy Portland, OR, businessman Lamar Hoyt Sr. is shot to death in his bed. His wife, Ellen Crease, fires upon and kills the shooter. When the forensic scientist studies the photographs of the crime scene, he sees a discrepancy in the blood spatters, which points to Crease's lying about what happened. Her arraignment and bail hearing is before Richard Quinn, an honest, by-the-book judge who is being blackmailed into ruling against Crease. Despite Margolin's storytelling ability, the novel features unadorned prose and is thin on characterization and shallow in plot. The one bright spot here is Mary Garrett, an attorney with a great deal of aplomb and courtroom savvy who should be considered for her own novel soon. For most fiction collections because of demand for the author's books.

From Booklist
In his past few novels, Margolin has proven that he can write a legal thriller rivaling Scott Turow but with the cheeky storytelling savvy of Danielle Steel. Here, the popular author again brings the two influences together (though, thankfully, a little less from the Steel side), and the result is a wonderful, fast-paced thriller. Richard Quinn, having served only three years on the bench, is appointed to the prestigious homicide division. Although a novice, Quinn earned the lofty appointment by being one of the most honorable, veracious jurists Portland, Oregon, has known--at least, since the death of his highly respected father. The young judge has every intention of upholding his father's scrupulous reputation when he is assigned to hear his first case, which involves the murder of state representative Ellen Crease's husband. Tough-as-nails Crease, a former cop, finds herself accused of committing the murder. Judge Quinn suspects a setup and risks his own safety so that justice may prevail. Margolin gives his material immediacy by making readers privy to Quinn's thinking through every twist and turn of the plot. With the popularity of Margolin's last novel and significant publicity for this one, library demand will be high. Mary Frances Wilkens

Lines and Shadows, by Joseph Wambaugh

Not since Joseph Wambaugh's best-selling "The Onion Field" has there been a true police story as fascinating, as totally gripping as . . . "Lines And Shadows." The media hailed them as heroes. Others denounced them as lawless renegades. A squad of tough cops called the Border Crime Task Force. A commando team sent to patrol the snake-infested no-man's-land south of San Diego. Not to apprehend the thousands of illegal aliens slipping into the U.S., but to stop the ruthless bandits who preyed on them nightly--relentlessly robbing, raping and murdering defenseless men, women and children. The task force plan was simple. They would disguise themselves as illegal aliens. They would confront the murderous shadows of the night. Yet each time they walked into the violent blackness along the border, they came closer to another boundary line--a fragile line within each man. and crossing it meant destroying their sanity and their lives.

"With each book, it seems, Mr. Wambaugh's skill as a writer increases . . . . In "Lines And Shadows" he gives an off-trail, action-packed true account of police work and the intimate lives of policemen that, for my money, is his best book yet."-- "The New York Times Book Review."

"A saga of courage, craziness, brutality and humor . . . . One of his best books, comparable to "The Onion Field" for storytelling and revelatory power."-- "Chicago Sun-Times"

Factual report on USA/Mexican border crossings
By William A. Hunter
This book was written in the late '70's and is still true today. Only the numbers of illegal crossings have changed and they were high then; astronomical today. The book recalls an experiement that lasted just over a year.

The San Diego Police Department sent specially trained undercover police officers into the canyons of the border to intercept drug gangs and other bad actors. In the process, they also intercepted illegal aliens in their attempts to cross into the USA. Sometimes their intervention saved the lives of illegal aliens from harm dealt out by the gangs, the coyotes, and indeed, even the Mexican policia!

Wambaugh has written many superb police accounts based on fact. He presents them with grit, humor, and truth.

This is one of his best.

An Incredible Story, But Gets Lost In the Telling
By Andy in Washington
Lines and Shadows relates an amazing series of events on the US/Mexican border. The book describes either a very heroic group of San Diego police officers, or an out-of-control group of gunslingers, depending on how you look at things. The events occurred in the 1980's, although the book is fairly recent.

=== The Good Stuff ===

* The story is truly amazing, bordering on unbelievable. I won't spoil the details for anyone, but if this was a work of fiction, you'd think it was over the top. In a nutshell, a group of San Diego police officers form a special task force to combat violence in the border crossing area...and become quite violent themselves.

* Wambaugh seems to have spent quite a bit a time with at least some of the principals in the group. There are some very detailed recollections of events, dialogs and thoughts. The story is fairly complete, and takes us through a whole phase in the officer's lives. Wambaugh captures much of the darker side of police officer's lives, including infidelity, alcoholism and a few assorted felonies.

* The story is spell-binding, and I got sucked up into reading the book. I won't say that it reached "can't put it down" status, but I did keep going back to it and wanted to see how it ended.

=== The Not-So-Good Stuff ===

* I have never been a fan of Joseph Wambaugh's style. The story seems to get lost in his attempts to capture witty dialog, cool language and clever turns of phrase. I found some of the individual events difficult to comprehend and am still not sure I understand what happened in several of them.

* The text seems to repeat itself, and many of the descriptions just run together. As a brief example, the 393rd time the environment and inhabitants of the area are described as "smelling like garbage", I was more than ready to concede the point. Many of the descriptions and dialogs seem quite detailed for events that happened nearly 30 years ago.

* My biggest complaint is the shallowness of the story. The book relates a fascinating tale of meeting criminal violence with police violence. There were some very positive results, along with some rather nasty events. It would have been nice if the author had stepped back a bit and examined the larger implications of this. More simply, did the end justify the means?

=== Summary ===

If you are a fan of police stories, this one is fairly unusual and different from the usual one. It reads much like Wambaugh's other books, which have always struck me as more of a proposal for a screenplay than serious works of non-fiction. But the book is readable, the story is fantastic, and you will walk away shaking your head. I'd recommend it for fans of the genre, but you might want to read a sample page or two and make sure you are comfortable with the author's style.
