Laurie R. King on The God of the Hive

Basically, I have a low threshold for boredom. For a series writer this can be a dangerous thing, since any series is to some extent the same people doing things similar to what they did before. Over the years, I’ve gotten around this by alternating one series with another, and tossing in the occasional standalone.

But sometimes, I find myself writing the same characters that I did the previous year. Which is fine, I like my characters, and I can always find something for them to do. Even so, there is a faint air of threat in a second year with the same people, rather like having good friends to stay on an island retreat and having a really great time and wishing they could stay longer until the morning comes when they’re scheduled to take off and the bridge is out, and your boat sinks, and a storm comes up and pretty soon they’ve been there for a month and you begin to grumble and snap and wonder what the devil you ever saw in these parasites, and you eye the hatchet and the rat poison and...

Because I know that I have a low threshold for the same faces, whenever I have characters who look as if they’re going to stay on longer than I’d originally intended, I arrange things so that we don’t have a chance to get bored with each other. Little projects and changes of scenery help: plop the characters on a boat and send them to India, say, followed by something entirely different like San Francisco. And make the first one a spy thriller, and the second one more psychological suspense: hence The Game and Locked Rooms. Bring in a historical detective writer--Dashiell Hammett--and voila! No chance to wear on one another’s nerves!

Similarly, the team of players who come back from San Francisco onto ground that’s been worked before--how many times can one write an English Country House Mystery?--needs to have something unexpected thrown at them, and at the faithful reader. You think you know the characters? Well, how about a long-lost son for Sherlock Holmes--and if that’s not enough, maybe give him a granddaughter as well? Then for the following year, take the ingredients of The Language of Bees and change it from first person to multiple points of view, toss with a dash of modern espionage and a sprinkling of ancient British mythology, and pour them all out onto Westminster Bridge in the wee hours, and you have The God of the Hive.

And next year, when the third Russell & Holmes in a row comes out? I plan on--but no, let’s let that be a surprise. Let us just say, what they will do is sufficiently different from The God of the Hive that it will save them from the dangers of an author’s vengeful imagination: last time a writer got tired of Sherlock Holmes, it led to a dive off a high waterfall.

A woodland character who could be the Green Man has a shell-shocked Great War past. The attacks on the Holmes family are specific, devious, cunning, and widespread. How Mary, Holmes, and Mycroft solve this conundrum—usually while separated from one another—is delineated in resplendent prose. The nascent and rocky development of air travel and international telephone lines; the effect of a winsome and intelligent child on perhaps overintellectual adults; descriptions of locales and places via scent, texture, and color—all of it makes for utterly absorbing reading. The end is both puzzling and uplifting. Things may not be quite what they seem. A few ends are left dangling: one can only imagine purposefully. A beautifully told tale of myth, mystery and suspense

This is a most satisfying conclusion to the story begun in "The Language of Bees." Ms. King masterfully refreshes the reader's memory of the dark events in that novel as she traces the separate, circuitous journeys of Sherlock Holmes and Mary Russell back to London, and we also find out what Mycroft and assorted villains are up to. It's hard to say much about the events in this book without giving too much away, but there's plenty of suspense, mystery, action and adventure, and the quality of the prose and the vivid portrayal of the characters are up to the author's usual high standards.

The highlight of this book for me was an odd, delightful new character, a man who comes to the rescue of Russell, her pilot, and Holmes' young granddaughter, Estelle, after their plane crash-lands in the forest. He introduces himself as Robert Goodman, and Russell can't help thinking of him as Robin Goodfellow, or "The Green Man," which was the author's original working title for this book. Ms. King is also reviving her theme of the holy fool, which she used so effectively earlier in her Kate Martinelli mystery "To Play the Fool." As exciting and well-plotted as the thrilling story of Mycroft, Holmes and Russell vs. the villains is, I saw this book primarily as a powerful mythic tale, with the fey Robert Goodman at the center of it. It's certainly one of the very best books in the series.

Be sure to read "The Language of Bees" before you start this one. And if you haven't read the earlier installments in the Russell-Holmes series, start with "The Beekeeper's Apprentice." It's a great series for anyone who enjoys well-written mystery and suspense with intelligent, likable characters, and it's a must-read for Sherlock Holmes aficionados.

A Delightful Escape

I so didn't want to finish reading this book. I can't explain exactly what it is about Laurie King's books...but even though I dropped out of reading the "mystery/thriller" genre a LONG time ago - I love her books. They have all the wonderful escapism and none of the cheesiness that ruins most "whodunits" for me.

To sink back into the world of Sherlock Holmes...of bolt holes, Irregulars, disguises and detecting far before the world of DNA & CSI...is a delight. And with Mary Russell as our guide - the experience is all the more delightful. She has all of the intelligence, common sense and perception of Holmes - with the very needed addition of compassion and a sharp wit.

"The business end of a gun is remarkably distracting. It dominates the world."

"The God of the Hive" brings the reader into the world of Holmes's brother Mycroft, usually a background character. The reader is also introduced to newly revealed family members for Holmes and a fascinating character Russell encounters under desperate circumstances.

"He stood, torn between the choices I had given him. It might be nothing. A charabanc of travelers benighted and looking for help. A band of Wordsworth fanatics looking for a host of golden daffodils by moonlight. Even some of Mycroft's men coming to our assistance - the last made for a lovely thought. But until I knew for certain, we had to treat this as an invasion, and I hated the thought that this damaged man's generosity of spirit had brought an abrupt loss of his hard-won peace."

Although the story is at the forefront almost all of the time...there seems to be a thread of social commentary running through the events that was not unwelcome.

"Were five armed men another symptom of unrest? Or was this simply what modern life would be, a place where a homicidal charlatan is embraced as wise, where children can be shot out of the sky, where a Good Samaritan can be driven from his home by armed intruders?"

This takes place in 1924...but during a time of great social change when a great schism existed between those eager for a brighter future and those who wanted to maintain their death grip on the past.

As described by Mycroft, "...as you no doubt heard even in foreign parts, there was consternation and loud doom-saying on all sides: The Socialists were expected to bring the end of the monarchy, the establishment of rubles as the coin of the realm, a destruction of marriage and family, and dangerously intimate political and economic ties with the Bolsheviks. Eight months later, the worst of the country's fears have yet to be realized, and MacDonald has surprised everyone by being less of a firebrand than the village greengrocer."

Again, the story is the thing in "The God of the Hives" - and it is a wonderful one. I enjoyed this book immensely and my only regret is that I finished it too quickly and now must wait again for another wonderful story of Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes.

Not her best

I really liked the early books in this series, but as they go on they are not so good anymore. It is like
Cornwell and Scarpetta...time to retire. There are some glimmers here that there is some hop, but
they are only glimmers. The more way out she goes with the stories the more I want to stop reading.
I actually have stopped for now. I may continue later. These series are hard to continue at the same
high standard. Other writers have had the same issue and either continued to write mediocre books
or stopped writing. I think these started out really cool and have evolved into fantasy or something.
I am not sure what has gone wrong, but this book is nowhere near the caliber of the early ones.

Second hardcover romance (Magic, 1990--not reviewed) from veteran author Hoag--a steamy, modern romance set in the Louisiana bayou country. When Serena Sheridan leaves her psychotherapy practice in Charleston and returns home for a vacation, she finds that her twin sister is planning to sell the family estate to an oil company as a way of financing her husband's political career and that her grandfather has retreated into the swamp in protest. Serena hires Lucky Doucet--a devastatingly handsome Cajun (she thinks of him as ``a devil on steroids'')--to help her find the old man. Though at first put off by his macho manner, Serena succumbs quickly to Lucky's prowess in the bedroom. But great sex does not a relationship make; Lucky's troubled and bitter past keep him from offering Serena anything more than his magnificent body. Meanwhile, Serena becomes more deeply embroiled in her own sea of troubles, which include dealing with her willful grandfather, an unscrupulous representative from the oil company, and the seething resentment of her sister. The plot culminates in an attempt on Serena's life- -engineered by her brother-in-law--from which Lucky rescues her in the nick. I love this book and it's characters. It had been probably 10 years since I had read it the first time and it is one of the only books that I have ever read twice. Absolutely love it!

As usual for Koontz, the novel opens at full throttle: a mad doctor invades a motel in Arizona, injects both itinerant artist Dylan O'Connor and struggling comic Jillian Jackson (strangers to one another) with an unknown substance that, he says, is his life's work and will have some unknown effect, then warns them to flee before his enemies kill them; soon after, the doctor is slain by heavily armed assailants. The rest of the story is an extended chase, as Dylan and Jillian, along with Dylan's high-functioning autistic brother, Shep, dart around the West, only steps ahead of the assassins. Within hours, the effects of the injections materialize: Jillian experiences portentous visions-a flock of birds, a woman in a church; Dylan is overcome by the need to rush to the aid of people in distress (among others, in an intensely poignant scene, an elderly man searching for his missing daughter); and Shep learns to teleport himself and others. (Interestingly, Koontz bases the science behind these developments on nanotechnology, the same mechanism used by Michael Crichton in his just published Prey, an object lesson in how two writers can take the same premise and generate two very different yet excellent novels). The novel's only flaw is its abrupt ending, contrived probably to allow sequels-a probability that Koontz fans, but also anyone else who reads this novel, a predestined bestseller and rightfully so, will applaud.

Since Dylan's autistic brother, Shep, goes wherever Dylan goes, it takes a little pushing, but they hit the asphalt just as Jilly's beloved Coupe de Ville--just stolen--blows up, immolating a driver whom they think is Frankenstein, as Dylan has dubbed the doctor-salesman-whatever. On the lam, Dylan and Jilly discover they have fantastic new powers. He is psychically compelled to track down evildoers, and she can make psychically powered leaps in space. And golly, Shep can leap around in space and time! Seems Frankenstein stuck him, too. Koontz's latest is mostly a chase, with all the principals, including Frankenstein (a stooge was in Jilly's Caddy) and Jilly's favorite broadcaster, a psychic who has also been injected, eventually gathering for a Mexican showdown. The only really startling thing in it is the remark, made of Dylan and Jilly's downtime chitchat about movies, "as though Hollywood-produced entertainments could possibly have serious relevance to them now." Maybe Hollywood isn't relevant to characters in a story, but this story--a real load of laffs, action, schtick, and product placement ops--isn't seriously relevant to anything else. Ray Olson

Brilliant stuff

Ever since the Christopher Snow novels (Fear Nothing and Seize the Night), Dean Koontz has been perfecting his own sub-genre, the spiritual thriller. His work has fully come to fruition in his two latest books, One Door Away from Heaven and By the Light of the Moon.
It's interesting to compare the latter with Michael Crichton's Prey. Both deal with nanotechnology. Both are in the thriller genre. That's where the similarity ends. Crichton is a Cassandra. Koontz is a prophet of the good news (not really the Christian gospel, but something very close). The thing that most clearly separates Koontz from Crichton is the former's deep concern for people, especially those who would generally be considered the dregs of society-trailer park denizens, kids with terminal illnesses, dead-end divorcees. These are the people through whom salvation comes, not the scientists, not the theologians, not the cultural arbiters.
By the Light of the Moon, perhaps Koontz' most accomplished novel to date, concerns three misfits, Dylan O'Conner and his adult autistic brother, Shep, and Jillian Jackson, a third-rate stand-up comic. These three share a common, albeit bizarre, thread of recent personal history: each has been infected with an unknown substance, administered by a benign-looking although ego-maniacally demented mad scientist, that will either destroy them or endow them with remarkable powers-or perhaps both. They find themselves thrown together and on the run, from mysterious forces who want nothing less that their termination, with extreme prejudice.
What happens is a series a serio-comic chase scenes, personal revelations, and general Koontz-inspired mayhem and high jinks, all ending in a remarkable turn-around-is-fair-play denouement, featuring the most memorable minor character, apparent UFO-obsessed radio-talk-show-host Parish Lantern (great name, btw), since Kilgore Trout.
By perfecting the relational-friendly spiritual thriller, Koontz has done us all a great service: He has figured out how to insinuate deep messages into the most unlikely set of story circumstances, all the while entertaining our socks off. For that, I believe he has become the most important novelist of his generation.
On a personal note, I am the father of an autistic son approximately Shep's age, and I must say I was very moved by Koontz' conception and portrayal of an individual suffering from this condition. My son, Christopher (his name means "Christ-bearer"), is about at the same functioning level, and Koontz has exactly caught the mystery and much of the nuance of autism. Except, perhaps, for the depiction of autism by Dustin Hoffman in "The Rain Man" (based on the son of famous autism researcher, Bernard Rimland), Shep O'Conner is the most accurately rendered fictional autistic character I have seen.
Thank you, Dean Koontz, for your quirky, idiosyncratic vision. May it ensue in many more such inspired creations.

As a long time reader of Dean Koontz books, I have been somewhat disappointed with his most recent novels. Although by most standards they are very readable, they lack much of what has made Dean Koontz a solid best-selling author for so many years - strong characters, tight storytelling. I found the author's recent books to be overly descriptive and somewhat flowery (sorry, but it's hard to describe the exact nature of the problem - also note, I still read them all!).
I am very pleased then to say that his most recent novel, By The Light of the Moon is not only his best in recent years but may be his best since Dark Rivers of the Heart.
The characters - Dylan, Shepherd and Jilly - are brought together after they have been injected with nanobots, microscopic biological machines, which bring about unique changes in our characters. Dylan is able to identify events already happened or yet to come in the residue left by a person's touch on various objects. Jilly develops precognition. Shep, Dylan's autistic brother, develops the most exciting ability. He can "fold" from "here" to "there". He seems to be able to grasp the edge of reality where he is and fold it out of the way while folding into another location. While this "folding" can be accomplished in either space or time, the ability to "fold" into other dimensions is hinted at, creating exciting possibilities for these characters in the future. The author describes this process so eloquently that it reminds one of Stephen King and Peter Straub's young Jack Sawyer "Flipping" into the Territories in The Talisman and Dark House.
The author follows these character's actions with little interruption by the band of black Suburbans following them (full of thug golfers (you'll see!)). This is somewhat unusual for Dean Koontz who usually keeps the tension up by moving frequently from one cast of characters to another. Not so in this book. It works very well, however. The action is fast paced and "can't put it down" exciting.
Some might be disappointed by the ending which sets us up for additional stories, but I loved these characters so much that I can't wait for more.
Dean Koontz has with this novel created a new band of superheroes, but done so in a way that we care greatly about them and look forward to getting together with them in the (hopefully, near) future.

4 and 1/2 stars...Engaging Characters in a Comic Book Finale

Shame on me. Despite my father's encouragement, I've taken this long to read a Koontz novel. It was worth the wait.
"By the Light of the Moon" leaps forward from the first few pages. Clearly, Koontz is one of those writers who knows how to start the story at the right spot--in the middle of the action. Within twenty pages, he thrusts us into an otherworldly and suspenseful setting, where three young people will be altered forever.
The story begins when Jilly, Dylan, and Shep's lives collide in a motel where a mad-scientist type character injects them with "stuff" and promises that "it does something different to everyone." Indeed, Dylan begins to feel psychic spoors on objects he touches, Jilly sees visions/mirages, and Shep learns how to "fold" the world around him (read the book to find out more). As they focus their abilities, the characters are bound together in a race to save lives and divert heartache and pain.
Koontz masterfully draws his characters, causing us to care for them and their predicament. Shep is an autistic boy, Dylan is the brother committed to caring for him, and Jilly is the stand-up comedian who stumbles into their path. Koontz lets his characters be themselves. He lets us see into their pasts and into their hearts with effective timing and skill. He keeps surprises up his sleeve, and divvies them out at appropriate moments. Although he spices his writing with rich similes and metaphors that add to the mood and direction of the story, I did find the sheer volume of them distracting at times.
The climax of the book was my only disappointment. The story moved from fringe characters in a predicament to "The Matrix" meets "X-Men." The scenes are handled deftly, and the bigger issues of fate and free-will are intriguing to contemplate, but Koontz's comic book ending undermined my enjoyment of the themes he explored.

Good book but isnt as good as previous efforts...

This book, which is part 5 in Armstrongs great series, was a bit weird for me.

The thing i love about Armstrongs Otherworld series is that the supernaturals are living directly underneath the noses of 'normal' humans without them even knowing it. The vampires and werewolves arent out of the closet like Hamiltons world.

But this book puts a twist to that.

Most of this book is spent in the 'ghost world' or afterlife. Where Fates, demons, supernaturals, and ghosts walk through walls, teleport to countries in seconds, and get punished by angels for being naughty. The setting of the afterlife takes some getting used to and seems a bit strange in some parts. Though i must admit that i liked some ideas like Hell being a paranoid place where you cant trust anyone...

The story still manages to get a hold of you thanks to Armsrongs wonderful set of characters. Eve is a funny and powerful person and her character really oozes with charisma and personality. The ending also has a weird twist or two thrown in which makes it a bit of a surprise.

Still, in the end i enjoyed the book a great deal but the supernatural afterlife setting was a bit 'new' to me.

Id rather see a book about Eve Levine before Savannah was born and how she died in the compound. Kind of like a prologue of sorts. Now thats an idea...

This book was good but I missed more story one Savanna and Paige. I know this book was more about Eve but it was just ok for me. We got a Nix and some angels and ghosts in this book but I like reading more about Paige and Savanna. I like to see that Savanna is growing up in these books as well.

How does Kelley Armstrong keep doing it? Haunted was excellent follow up to the "Women of the Otherworld" series.

Eve Levine definitely deserves the title "Mother of Year" as she proves that even death cannot keep her away from the person she loved best in this world, her daughter, Savannah. Eve goes to hell and back to protect her daughter and her guardians from a evil ghost who inhibits human bodies through trickery and creates havoc and death wherever she goes.

This is a toughest assignment of her life/death but Eve certainly delivers and my admiration for her goes up tenfold and she has at last found her place in the "everafter".

Great job Ms. Armstrong!!! Holding my breathe for the next in the series "Broken" due out next year. Can't get enough of this series.

"Why me?"

"Because you're the man I need."

Rafferty Lewis shoved his hands into the pockets of his slacks and stared broodingly out the window. That the view afforded him was the striking expanse of a Trinidad beach cheered him not at all; he would have preferred the New York skyline he normally saw from his office window.

However . . .

"You can refuse, of course, Mr. Lewis. After all, I have no legal claim on you. Not one I'd care to be called on to prove in court, at any rate."

"I'm glad you realize that."

"But you were sworn in as a federal agent, Mr. Lewis. And Mr. Long is willing to give you a leave of absence; since you and your partner handle all the work for Mr. Long, I took the liberty of inquiring--"

"Hagen, for heaven's sake just tell me what Josh said."

"That you'd be a damned fool to get involved."

"He should know."

Rafferty sighed explosively. A damned fool. Well, he probably was one, since he was here. He didn't like the setup, not one bit, but Hagen had been adamant about it. And, if nothing else, Rafferty had learned respect for Hagen's intelligence, no matter what he thought of his methods. Had Hagen deliberately chosen to approach him when Zach and Lucas--both of whom would probably have tried to dissuade him--were out of touch on business for Josh? For that matter, Josh himself was out of reach on his honeymoon somewhere in the South Pacific. And only Hagen would have had the nerve to intrude at such a time to ask if Josh minded giving up his attorney for a while. Only Hagen would have been able to find Josh.

Rafferty smiled. He would have given a lot to have been a fly on the wall during that conversation.

It had been just a month or two since the secretive federal agent's machinations had involved them all: Joshua Long, who commanded a formidable financial empire, and the three men who worked for him and were his friends. And at the conclusion of that hectic, troubling, dangerous episode, the wily government agent had managed to draft Josh and his men into "temporary" service.

Temporary, my eye! Rafferty thought now. Hagen had intended all along to call in those markers, one by one. He wouldn't get hold of Josh again; Raven, Josh's bride, would see to that, Rafferty guessed. But, he thought ruefully, Hagen had managed to get him.

Thinking of Zach and Lucas, Rafferty decided that Hagen would have a more difficult time enlisting their aid on future assignments. The massive security chief and the shrewd investigator for Joshua Long's empire were tough men. Neither was prone to being backed physically or metaphorically into corners.

As for himself, well, his strongest trait was curiosity. And Hagen had known that. Damn him.

A soft, perhaps timid knock at the door of his suite recalled him to the present, and he turned from the window, unconsciously squaring his shoulders, and headed for the door. With no idea what he would confront, he was braced for the worst. He opened the door, and his golden gift for words, greatly polished by a Harvard education, failed him totally.

"Mr. Lewis? I'm Sarah Cavell."

Rafferty had wondered how on earth he would deal with this particular part of the operation; now he wondered about it again, but for an entirely different reason. Clearing his throat, he hastily stepped back and gestured for Sarah Cavell to enter. "Uh, come in, please."

As she passed him to go into the living room, Rafferty caught a hint of some elusive fragrance that went to his head in an unnerving manner. He felt a sudden strong pulse throb through his body on a wave of heat. Never before had he experienced such an instant, powerful reaction to a woman. It shook him badly.

Still, he was able to put one foot in front of the other to follow her. Barely.

Hagen had offhandedly called Sarah Cavell "attractive."

Hagen, Rafferty decided, badly needed his head examined. Or his eyes.

Sarah was a tiny woman, barely five feet tall if that. And though another woman might have called her petite, no man worth the name would. Her vibrant, surprisingly lush curves of breasts and hips were sure to stop traffic and haunt dreams.

Her hair was that rare, striking color between red and gold, and it hung thick and shining to the middle of her back. Styled simply with a center part, that silky sweep of burnished hair framed a face that was too delicately perfect to be real. She was like a painting; every feature was finely drawn with artistic excellence. And in that strikingly perfect face, her eyes were simply incredible. Huge and shadowed by long, thick lashes, they were a clear, pale green.

In that single, flashing instant, Rafferty wanted Sarah Cavell more than he'd ever wanted anything or anyone in his life. All the training and experience gained in his thirty-four years of living hadn't prepared him for this. His responses were no longer controlled by his mind. Instead, two million years of instincts were in command. His mind grappled with the situation, trying to master instinct, fighting impulses just this side of savage. And the fact that he partially succeeded was due almost entirely to the strength of his own force of will. A complicated situation, he thought grimly, had just become nothing less than impossible. How could he do what he was supposed to?

He waved her to a chair and sat down across from her, hoping his reaction hadn't shown on his face. It was said he had a poker face when he desired one; with any luck at all, that was true. And he was, after all, a lawyer, so he got his tongue in gear. "First names, I think?"

She nodded agreeably. "Unless we want to have people staring at us. That kind of thing perished with formal Victorians." Her soft voice was dry.

"True. So, Sarah, why is a nice girl like you about to spend a few weeks with a total stranger?" he asked. Her reaction to his question pierced the fog of his mind. He thought he saw something in her eyes before she answered, something that looked like fear.

"It's my job." She shrugged a little, her green eyes unreadable once more.

Rafferty had learned early in his career that he possessed an innate ability--call it an instinct--to detect anomalies. If something was out of sync in a situation he simply felt it, like an itch at the back of his mind. And that itching was fierce now.

He brushed a thumb along his jaw slowly, watching her, unaware that he was wearing his best professional poker face to hide the turmoil she caused. "Hagen said you'd fill me in," he said abruptly, "on what we're supposed to be doing."

She met his steady gaze, her own unflinching. "Our assignment," she said, "is to make contact with an undercover agent who has coded information. I was pulled--brought in for this--because I'm a cryptographer. Hagen said that twice in the past they've--we've--bought a pig in a poke and found it worthless, so my part in this assignment is to verify the information." Inwardly, Sarah swore at herself, wishing desperately that the handsome face across from her would reveal something of the man behind it, reveal something of his thoughts.

Rafferty noted the lapses and hesitations in her statements, and on top of everything else, he had to wonder. "I see. So we're to sail the Caribbean on this yacht Hagen provided until we make contact with the agent?"

"Yes."

"Why me?" His gaze held her eyes, seeing the flicker of hesitation in their green depths. "Hagen said it was because I was the man for the job. As far as I can see, any one of his male agents would have sufficed to provide . . . cover for you."

Sarah's mind recalled an answer to a question she had asked her superior, the same question Rafferty Lewis had just posed.

"Rafferty Lewis was an assistant district attorney at a ridiculously young age," her boss had told her. "Unfortunately, he had a problem playing political games. Joshua Long hired him, ostensibly to handle his legal affairs. He and his partner do that, of course, but Lewis is also a dollar-a-year man for the government. He's done some work for the Justice Department, and has been in on a couple of crime commissions and task forces. He's a pilot, and he holds a sharpshooter rating with all handguns. He's also extraordinarily cool under pressure and has an ability to fit himself into any situation he encounters. Gets about as nervous as a bag of cement."

Sarah shook her head slightly, as her thoughts returned to the present. "I can't answer you very well, I'm afraid. Hagen simply told me that you were the best he knew for this assignment."

Rafferty, with recent events very much in mind, shook his head slightly. "That man was born with a motive behind him," he said dryly. "From what I've seen, he has a reason for every action he takes, and every choice he makes. How long have you worked for him?"

"Oh, several years," she said, vague. "But his--our--organization is a large one; I only met him when he briefed me on this assignment."

Rafferty watched her cross slim, tanned legs, reminding himself that he was feeling suspicious and nothing more. Certainly nothing more. But his wayward mind persisted in thinking that she had the most fantastic legs, and what did it matter that she was either lying or concealing something from him?

"Then you"--he cleared his throat of a tendency toward hoarseness--"have never worked with him personally?"

"No."

Remembering Raven, he asked, "What's your specialty?"

"I told you. I'm a cryptographer."

"Puzzles, coded messages and information--like that?"

"Like that."

All Rafferty's instincts, legal and otherwise, warned him that he'd better get all the information he could before this thing began. Past experience told him there might well be little time for it later. At the moment, however, he couldn't think of many questions to ask. Except the ones he couldn't ask, the ones he wanted very badly to ask, the ones having nothing to do with the assignment.

"Did you love your husband very much?"

"Can you forget him?"

"Could you want me?"

He cleared his throat again. "I see. Well, if I have the sequence of events correctly, we're to check into another hotel here in Trinidad for a couple of days, then board the yacht and set sail for some country. . . . What was it?"

"Kadeira. It's northwest of here."

"Yes, I've heard of it. And while we sail around Kadeira, we're supposed to make contact with the operative with the coded information?"

She hesitated. "Um . . . sort of. Actually, the agent is more or less incommunicado because of his cover. We have to go to him."

Rafferty drummed his long fingers soundlessly on the arm of his chair as he forced himself to consider this second disconcerting aspect of the situation. And he knew now why Hagen had been so evasive in naming their destination. Rafferty would have laughed in his face if he'd been told they were actually to go into Kadeira. "Correct me if I'm wrong," he said morosely, "but isn't Kadeira having political and social difficulties at the moment? The kinds of difficulties which make it inadvisable for tourists to visit the island?"

She was chewing her bottom lip, drawing his gaze despite all his good intentions and nagging suspicions, causing his heart to pound heavily and every muscle of his body to tighten, and her soft voice sounded as if it were afraid of itself.

"Uh, yes. The president there claims it isn't a revolution and that he's in control, but there have been a few incidents in the past months involving American tourists. They don't get many tourists," she added.

His fingers drummed faster. Dammit, why couldn't he take his eyes off her? "Yes. As I recall from the news reports, a salesman from Wichita was arrested for being a spy. Bit paranoid, aren't they?"

She looked uneasy for a moment. "He was released," she offered.

"Uh-huh. But the toy manufacturer from Billings hasn't been seen in over a month."

Her eyes widened, but Sarah Cavell had nothing to say.

Rafferty stopped drumming long enough to run his fingers through his thick copper hair. His tawny eyes frowned at her. "Tell me, did Hagen suggest we go into this island paradise armed? Or are we being given diplomatic immunity to perform an act that Kadeira's president--judging by his record--would certainly consider an act of espionage?"

Sarah examined her long, bronze-lacquered nails. "About guns, personal choice, Hagen said. I should mention, I couldn't hit the side of a barn if I was standing next to it."

"Great," Rafferty muttered, becoming unwillingly fascinated in a horrified kind of way. "And the rest?"

She seemed to find the secrets of the universe in the metallic gleam of her nails. "Oh . . . no diplomatic or political immunity for us, I'm afraid. Kadeira doesn't exactly recognize American nationals as being . . . worthy of such honors. We're reasonably safe outside the three-mile limit, but once inside Kadeira . . ."

"And how," Rafferty asked carefully, "are we supposed to get inside Kadeira? Being unworthy American nationals, I mean?"

"Hagen said that it's been arranged."

"Oh, did he? Did he happen to mention just how it's been arranged?"

"No."

Rafferty began to entertain notions of locating the elusive Hagen and choking the information out of him. It was a blissful possibility while it lasted. He sighed. "I see. We just leap blindly into this thing, trusting Hagen beyond the limits of sanity. Do you happen to speak Spanish?" He watched her shake her head slowly, and wasn't surprised. "Neither do I. And from what I've seen of the rare news footage, neither of us looks as if we belong in Kadeira. How in the name of hell are we supposed to get into that country without getting ourselves arrested?"

Sarah lifted her hands in a kind of shrug and tried a smile that she couldn't quite pull off. "Hagen said it's all arranged," she repeated softly.

Rafferty wished he smoked. Or drank to excess. Any escape would have been pleasant at the moment. "Right. Well, ignoring that question for the moment, what about later? Once we're inside Kadeira, how do we make contact with the agent holding the information?"

Sarah studied her nails again. "We'll receive a signal from him to arrange a meeting. At the meeting, we'll receive the information, which I'm to verify. Then we just . . . leave Kadeira."

Rafferty's Wife= two thumbs down

As a big fan of Kay Hooper's exciting romance novels, I found Rafferty's Wife to be a let down in the biggest way. This book lacked the usual excitement and fast-pace that she usually uses, and I had to look at the cover periodically to see if it was, in fact, one of Hooper's stories. It begins slow, and moves even slower throughout. The characters are un-developed, and the love story feels forced. It's as if Kay Hooper was sick with the flu when she wrote it. I got half way through, and finally stopped trying to reach the point where the story would explode into something meaningful and entertaining. Not worth a penny much less the $8.00 I paid. I wish I could get my money back.

I will read just about anything. Kay Hooper is one of my favorite authors. This book had no story line, no suspense, no romance a total bomb. What a waste of money.

I normally really enjoy most titles by Ms. Hooper, but this one is boring, predictable, and the characters are static and without any romantic chemistry. This one is worth skipping.

The third book in Hooper's Bishop series follows Riley Crane, a member of an FBI unit of psychics, to Opal Island to investigate reported occult activity. She experiences blackouts and a loss of energy and clairvoyant powers and slowly realizes that she is under attack by someone able to marshal dark forces who is related to a serial killer she killed in a prior case. Riley then learns that her lover, Ash, who turns out to be the local DA, was also involved with the case. She is loathe to trust him, since she can't remember falling in love with him, but her body doesn't forget, and his calm acceptance of her occult powers gives her confidence. Her strength and powers return, and she succeeds in ridding Opal Island of its evil. As in many sequels, there is some catch-up involved, but the book stands on its own and is an interesting mystery-paranormal-romance genre blend. Mary K. Chelton

The story line in this one was killer!! Kept me guessing right to the end. Different twist to Bishop's group and a very interesting in it's ways of coming together to solve the mystery

Sleeping With Fear!!

I have to say I agree with most of the other reviews.. Kay Hooper is one of a verrrry few authors I buy in hardback.. I was dissapionted in the book.. Where were the agents with their psychic abilities.. It was hard to follow where Riley was going. The ending seems a bit thrown together.. I mean her and Ash were talking one min and the next she was off in a Hummer..I like what she tried to do with the book but I think she fell short.. It seems to me Kay Hooper was not able to write the amnesia well into the story at all.. I sure hope the next book is better I think I will wait for it in paperback

Long-awaited doesn't begin to describe this fourth installment in bestseller Martin's staggeringly epic Song of Ice and Fire. Speculation has run rampant since the previous entry, A Storm of Swords, appeared in 2000, and Feast teases at the important questions but offers few solid answers. As the book begins, Brienne of Tarth is looking for Lady Catelyn's daughters, Queen Cersei is losing her mind and Arya Stark is training with the Faceless Men of Braavos; all three wind up in cliffhangers that would do justice to any soap opera. Meanwhile, other familiar faces—notably Jon Snow, Tyrion Lannister and Daenerys Targaryen—are glaringly absent though promised to return in book five. Martin's Web site explains that Feast and the forthcoming A Dance of Dragons were written as one book and split after they grew too big for one volume, and it shows. This is not Act I Scene 4 but Act II Scene 1, laying groundwork more than advancing the plot, and it sorely misses its other half. The slim pickings here are tasty, but in no way satisfying. (Nov.)

Martin’s manuscript for Feast of Crows was so long that his publisher relegated half the chapters to a fifth book due out in 2006, A Dance with Dragons. With only half the storylines and characters present from A Storm of Swords (2000), Feast of Crows should seem thin—but it’s so rich with characters, plot twists, and settings that a few critics thought the novel one of the best in the fantasy genre. Martin renders his characters—would-be queens, outlaws, priests, squires, ladies, and fools—with unusual depth and moral complexity, while placing their personal dramas within the epic sweep of lands lost and won. Though the book stands alone, readers will reap greater rewards by starting with the first of the series, A Game of Thrones.

A Song of Walking and Walking Some More

I've enjoyed this series, honestly I have, but the latest entry--A Feast for Crows--has forced me to seriously reconsider whether it has been worth it.

In the first place, frankly, this is no longer the series I'd signed on for. The first novel introduced a group of characters, the Starks, and led us to believe that they would be central to the narrative. Now with most of them dead or scattered, they're almost incidental to it. Since this volume only deals with half of the current "main cast," some of my personal favorites completely disappear (like Tyrion and Daenerys). In short, when I decided to continue on after A Game of Thrones, I didn't know I'd be reading 1000 pages of Brienne and the Iron Born.

Aside from this literary 'bait and switch,' there's also the fact that... well... nothing really happens in this book. Okay, maybe "nothing" is harsh, but it certainly feels like it. *Lots of things* should happen in a 1000 page book, but Martin strives to put all of the relevant happenings at the very end. Before that, characters spend an endless amount of time wandering from place to place. We readers get to meet all sorts of new and extraneous characters, instead of spending time with the countless we've met before. (Though in fairness, given the time between publishings, it's unlikely we'd remember all of those older characters. I can't keep straight who's died anymore... I forget, is Theon dead?) Incredibly, most of the exciting action (battles and the like) take place between chapters, and we only learn about it through conversation after the fact.

Many of the new characters introduced here get their own POV chapter, sometimes one to a character. The series is becoming increasingly disjointed, and there's certainly no kind of resolution for anything in sight. The one real thru-line is Cersei's story. She probably gets the most chapters, and something like an actual plot. Of course, I can sum up all of those chapters to you here with: Cersei hates and is suspicious of/jealous of everyone and everything. Cersei sits around and snapes at everything, over and over again, and lord but it doesn't get much more exciting than that until page 900.

The series is, at least, consistent in that the worst things always happen to the best characters and things can always be counted on to go wrong (unless you're a villain). While it was once possible to say that Martin was being "realistic" in showing that, sometimes, bad things happen to the heroes... well, it's almost ridiculous now, in how nothing good ever seems to happen to anyone who could be described as "virtuous." Though, of course, very few of the remaining characters could so be described. Most have been decapitated well before this novel. There is a line between "realism" and "sadism," and it isn't all that "fine." Martin has crossed it some time ago.

Man, I was looking forward to this book. But really what I was looking forward to was a sequel to the novels that had come before it. Instead, this book (and, increasingly, the series) abandons the characters who have come before and, rather than offer any resolution, creates new conflicts spiraling off into the aether. It doesn't deal with any of those conflicts, either. Instead, it contents itself with having all of its main characters walk from locale to locale, talking, thinking and dreaming but never doing.

George R.R. Martin has taken up close to 4000 pages now, more than three times what Tolkien used in The Lord of the Rings and more than twice War and Peace. He has accomplished very little for all that, and given us little hope that there's any relief in sight. His preferred method of resolving conflicts seems to be having his characters abruptly die, and so that's how I figure he'll tie the loose ends here. It's all rather depressing, if like me you feel you have to finish what you start. Martin is capable of good, snappy storytelling--his graphic novel which takes place in the same world, The Hedge Knight, was really quite good. But it has one large advantage over A Song of Ice and Fire in that it has a beginning, middle and end. A Song of Ice and Fire, on the other hand, seems to be nothing but an endless middle. (The fact that it's a series doesn't mean it can't have both rising and falling action and resolutions to conflicts sprinkled along the way. Examine almost any other series, ever, for examples.)

Not all of these flaws are new to the series--in fact, they've been there since almost the start--but over time they're becoming more and more inescapable and damaging to the overall experience. Two stars for this novel. If things don't rapidly improve, and there's no reason to expect them to, we'll quickly find ourselves at a solitary star. A shame.

A Feast for Yawns

Unbelievably disappointing.

*****SPOILER ALERT*****: Nothing happens. And then nothing else happens, and then some more nothing, and WAIT HERE'S A TWIST: it's nothing.

I can't even give you a spoiler alert, because there's nothing to spoil. NOTHING HAPPENS. Character go on quests...that they never complete, get close to completing, and are in no way ever even close to the right path. Characters train and prepare for trials that never happen. Plots are hatched and then forgotten. Nothing happens.

The first three books were really phenomenal and engaging and I can't recommend them highly enough. But skip this one. Here, I'll spoil the plotlines for each of the characters followed in this book:

Brienne: Nothing happens. She goes on a quest to find and protect Sansa (or maybe Arya, too) and is never within 1000 miles of them. And since you as the reader know exactly where Sansa and Arya are, you know she's spending 3 chapters traveling to the wrong place.

Jaime: Nothing happens. He's mulling over his tarnished honor and lost hand, but also trying to train to use his left hand to sword fight, so you're kind of thinking maybe at the end he's going to be in some morally ambiguous situation where he tries to regain some of his lost honor by standing up for some injustice, even though he knows he'll likely lose left-handed...but no. He's training and preparing for a conflict that never occurs. Nothing happens.

Arya: Nothing happens. Hey check out this temple where they train badass assassins. I guess I'll do that or maybe I won't but I'll hang out for awhile and maybe get a little better at being kinda zen, but maybe not.

Sansa: Nothing happens. Hey I'm all hanging out at the Eyrie and no conflicts occur except for one slight annoyance quickly handled by somebody else. Oops, it's snowing, guess we'll go down the mountain for a bit.

Sam: Nothing happens. I'M ON A BOAT. That never gets attacked. And nothing really happens except for a love interest against my vows exactly like what Jon did in the last book. But then it's all okay and nothing happens.

Asha: Nothing happens. Hey I'm kind of a cool sexy pirate chick although you never actually get to see me fighting anything and I'm tough and I want to lead the Ironmen but they say I can't because I'm girl and oh look they're right they want some other dude as king and he says they're gonna take over the world but then they don't do anything except raid a couple of islands.

Arianne: I've got a plot to start a war but it doesn't work and then nothing happens.

Cersei: Okay, this is the ONLY character where anything is different at the end of the book than at the start, so I won't spoil this one...but really only read the last 3-4 Cersei chapters and you'll get the whole picture. Even then it's not that surprising, and you don't get to see the ultimate conclusion anyway.

On top of the fact that nothing happens...none of the stories have ANYTHING to do with each other. Except for Jaime and Cersei (and even then it's only in the first few chapters), none of the characters ever meet any of the other characters, or impact each other in any way. It'd be like watching Star Trek, except for the entire series Picard is on one starship and Riker's on another and every other character is on their own ship with different crews in different parts of the galaxy and none of them know each other or ever meet or interact in any way and they don't do anything anyway. Why are they in the same story? They have nothing to do with each other!

And it's not like the potential isn't there! You'd think Brienne might actually meet up with Sansa and have a confrontation with Jaime or Cersei...but nope. Or that the Ironmen and their conflict are fleshed out because they're going to capture Sam's ship and then all go off to find Dany together but...nope. Or that Jaime is going to investigate Arianne's plot with his daughter...but nope.

And the worst...you get to the end and discover that the next book in the series runs concurrently with this one. And since nothing happened in this book...no big new wars broke out, no undead monsters descended upon the southern realms...that means nothing is going to happen in the next book, either. It's going to be another giant snooze fest where absolutely nothing happens.

tl;dr: nothing happens.

You can't be serious...

I was a soldier in Iraq when this book was released. I had been eagerly waiting for 4 years for a new installment of what I felt at the time was the best and brightest light in the fantasy sub-genre. I was disappointed. By now you know that every major character that GRRM had cultivated for nearly 3000 pages, 10 years and 3 novels was absent or only mentioned peripherally at best. But that's not the biggest betrayal of this novel. The biggest betrayal is the introduction of new POVs that we, as readers, have nothing invested in. We couldn't care less about them and aren't given any compelling reasons to begin caring. Brienne, Samwell, the Greyjoys, and anything happening in Dorne were minor ornamentations to the first three novels -- and that's being generous in some cases. In this one, they are center-stage for a solid 2/3rds of the text and they contribute nothing. NOTHING. They don't advance the plot, they don't illuminate motivations of the major players, they don't even bother to capture your interest. Brienne LITERALLY rides around and looks for someone the whole book. That's it. I just summed up in eleven words what evidently takes a dozen or so entire chapters for GRRM to convey.

For a fan of the world of ASOIAF, this is an "okay" novel. It provides depth of background and expands the tapestry of this world, letting you into the minds of characters that, prior to this novel, you had no access to. For fans of the STORY of ASOIAF, this book is a virtual waste of time. There are perhaps half a dozen chapters that advance the story and, after all, I believe thats what most of us are craving. As I type this, we've been waiting almost 5 years for the next installment, A Dance with Dragons. I won't bore you with reasons why I'm irritated about it. (At this point, you're either a GRRM apologist and have forgiven him for making you wait almost a decade for something new to happen in his creation, or you're not. I am not.) However, to say that I've moved on to other stories and writers is an understatement.

If you're new to ASOIAF, I'm advising you to avoid these novels. I have a feeling GRRM will end up breaking our hearts. He is notorious for not keeping notes and "writing from his mind". So unlike Jordan, who had extensive outlines, notes and ideas for a future ghostwriter to work from in the event of his untimely death, GRRM may leave nothing but an unfinished series.

At the very least, you can probably skip this novel. What "A New Spring" was to the Wheel of Time series, this book will be to ASOIAF. An interesting side-journey for hardcore fans, but, to the casual reader, ultimately a marketing diversion intended to soak you of more money.
