In Osterley, a marshy Norfolk backwater, a man lies dying on a rainy autumn night. While natural causes will surely claim Herbert Baker’s life in a matter of hours, his last request baffles his family and friends.
Baker, a devout Anglican, inexplicably demands to see the town’s Catholic priest for a last confession. The old man dies without knowing that the very priest who gave him comfort will follow him to the grave just a few weeks later — the victim of an appalling murder.
The local police are convinced the evidence points to an interrupted robbery, and have named a suspect, Matthew Walsh. But the dead priest’s bishop insists that Scotland Yard oversee the investigation. A simple task for Rutledge, a man not yet well enough to return to full duty.
The Inspector draws on years of experience and a war-honed intuition as he finds himself uncovering secrets that the local authorities would prefer not to see explored. Todd deftly captures the dark atmosphere of despair and fragile hopes of post-World War I England, where no one has been untouched by the devastation. Teens will be intrigued by the combination of ghosts, the Titanic, battlefield flashbacks, and a traditional whodunit in which every character is suspect, and there are no easy solutions.

The cliffhanger ending of Todd's Legacy of the Dead (LJ 8/00) left Inspector Ian Rutledge on the brink of death. In this follow-up, Rutledge is recovering from his gunshot wound while trying to investigate the murder of a parish priest in the small town of Osterley. Rutledge is skeptical that Father James's death is a simple case of robbery gone wrong. Was he murdered because of something he knew or had seen? Rutledge's inquiries are hampered both by the local authorities and by townsfolk unwilling to talk. With the ever-present voice of Hamish, a dead Scottish soldier, in his head, Rutledge must set aside his own problems to find out the truth. A gifted writer, Todd has once again created an intriguing mystery peopled with memorably unique characters. The depth of emotion that he expresses is truly remarkable. Highly recommended for all libraries.

Readers of Todd's Ian Rutledge novels will have long ago become comfortable with the series' bizarre premise: that Rutledge, Scotland Yard inspector and shell-shocked World War I vet, has a dead man for a sidekick--Corporal Hamish MacLeod, whom Rutledge killed at the front when McLeod refused to leave his trench. MacLeod's voice is now Rutledge's constant companion, a kind of bantering Greek chorus. This time Rutledge and MacLeod find themselves in Norfolk investigating the murder of a Catholic priest. Rutledge begins to dig into the priest's life and finds, not surprisingly, plenty of ghosts--all of whom point toward a woman who apparently died on board the Titanic. Rutledge, much in the manner of P. D. James' Adam Dalgliesh, uncovers layers of ambiguity beneath the surface of apparently simple lives. That his own life is the most ambiguous of all, his own closet the most overflowing with ghosts, only adds to the sense of complexity. The crime solution here may be a bit too tidy, but the story's rich texture more than compensates. Bill Ott

A great mystery, but . . .

As with all the Ian Rutledge mysteries, the story is a good one, and I really enjoy this character and how he deals with his issues. I was a little frustrated by this story, because the author left some loose ends untied. Although he makes frequent reference to the previous entry in the series, which had a cliffhanger ending, the author never really resolves the unanswered questions regarding Fiona, "her" child, and Rutledge's godfather. I read this book because of the cliffhanger in the previous one, hoping for resolution. I didn't get it, and frankly, I felt a little cheated. This story is well-crafted and the writing is good, but I don't like to be promised answers and resolutions that aren't delivered. I hope the Charles Todd writing team doesn't make this a habit.

Magnificent Watchers

If you search Google for images of "see no evil, hear no evil, say no evil," you'll find millions. And not just the usual three monkeys.
Also people. Worldwide. Laughing. Having fun. And "no evil" statues, people on a bench with statues, pictures, people with actual monkeys, even a recent former president of the United States. Sometimes a fourth figure -- for do no evil -- is there with hands placed privately.
In "Watchers of Time" by Charles Todd, in the garden of a large English estate a superstitious picture is carved on a thick stone slab (bas-relief) of four similar simians -- apes, baboons, gibbons, your call -- bigger than life and ancient Egyptian. Enough to give children nightmares, and for parents to find ugly.
The side-by-side figures are called "The Watchers of Time." They do not depict the "no evils" of Google images. They cannot speak, they do not judge or condemn, they merely observe "what man and the gods may do." And any man with a guilty conscience would find their relentless fourfold staring very uncomfortable.
There is much in the story for them to watch.
A dying man, a former coachman to the estate, wants not only his Anglican priest at his bedside but also the priest from the local Catholic church. This unusual dual request starts a chain of events that begins with the brutal murder of the Catholic priest in his rectory and soon the reopening of the disappearance years before of the young pretty, but simpleton wife of the heir of the estate.
The amiable, smiling, crowd-pleasing Strong Man at the annual Catholic bazaar is quickly arrested and charged by the local police with the priest's murder. As for the young wife, did she perish with those who went down on the Titanic? Was she a runaway? Was she murdered? Why did the dead priest have an interest in her?
The uneasy likely replacement for the Catholic priest doesn't want to be the next victim in the rectory and asks his Bishop to bring in Scotland Yard, to ensure that the right man has been caught. Fighting against local opinion, Inspector Ian Rutledge labors exhaustively and exhaustingly as complications arise.
Todd's writing is among the very best out there. The characters are finely drawn, the descriptions riveting, the plotting intelligent and suspenseful.
In the end the silent Watchers do their job magnificently.

Still One of the Best Procedural Series

In this fifth outing, Inspector Rutledge of Scotland Yard is once again sent out of London to help the local constabulary investigate a murder and to placate local powers that be.
As he painstakenly uncovers each clue, Rutledge begins to put the puzzle of a local priest's murder together in spite of the local police declaring that they have found the killer. The conclusions he draws will shock the local people as well as the local policeman.
Todd has one of the four best British procedural series going (the others being Crombie, Robinson, and James). Todd's series is special, however, because he has set it immediately after World War I and his character is flawed because of his experiences in the trenches of France.
Todd's writing continues to be impressive and his plotting superb. He does not use devices that will give his detective more information than he gives his readers. He has maintained Inspector Rutledge's voice and that of his alter-ego Hamish in this outing.
Todd has written a procedural - it is not machine gun paced - it's not supposed to be. If you're looking for a book that you can read in a single setting and still figure out whodunnit, don't pick up this series. But if you enjoy going along with the detective as he/she investigates a crime step-by-step, then try this series. You won't be disappointed.
If you intend to read this series, start with Todd's first effort A Test of Wills so you get the sense of the character and his suffering.
