What could possibly sound more English, more epic, and more mythological than THE LORD OF THE RINGS in the hands of BBC Radio? In this 1981 full-cast dramatization, the grand language, leisurely pace, and absorbing detail of J.R.R. Tolkien are all evident, as are the high production standards of the BBC. I can't stress enough the "Britishness" of this production--from the voice of Ian Holm as Frodo Baggins (Holm appeared in the movie as Bilbo) to the courtly musical score to the urgent, gray, misty, Celtic quality of the last words of this first book: "It was beyond all hoping that such a road would prove safe, though just how dangerous it would turn out to be we could never have imagined in our most terrifying nightmares." When you hear those words, you feel them. Tolkien wrote serious fantasy, and these tapes capture his story's timeless and wise undertones. A bridge too far
By J. H. Clemson
This item is referred to as "The Fellowship of the Ring (BBC Full-Cast Dramatization) [UNABRIDGED]". Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary defines "unabridged" as "2 : being the most complete of its class : not based on one larger". This definition led me to believe that I would be receiving the whole story. I should have looked at the number of disks (or tapes) and the 4 hour time given. This is not an unabridged version of the first boook of The LOTR trilogy. It might be an unabridged version of the BBC rendition, but who knows. This is just slightly longer than the movie version, so still no Tom B, no Barrow Downs, etc.

I have not purchased the other BBC dramatications of the LOTR series, but I did notice that they are not labled "UNABRIDGED"!

I tried to listen to this from a copy I got from the library. Terrible. The dramatization is very distracting and some voices are so low you can't hear them. I listened to about 30 minutes and stopped. I am purchasing the unabridged edition through Audible.

Shot in the Heart, by Mikal Gilmore

Gary Gilmore, the infamous murderer immortalized by Norman Mailer in The Executioner's Song, campaigned for his own death and was executed by firing squad in 1977. Writer Mikal Gilmore is his younger brother. In Shot in the Heart, he tells the stunning story of their wildly dysfunctional family: their mother, a blacksheep daughter of unforgiving Mormon farmers; their father, a drunk, thief, and con man. It was a family destroyed by a multigenerational history of child abuse, alcoholism, crime, adultery, and murder. Mikal, burdened with the guilt of being his father's favorite and the shame of being Gary's brother, gracefully and painfully relates a murder tale "from inside the house where murder is born... a house that, in some ways, [he has] never been able to leave." Shot in the Heart is the history of an American family inextricably tied up with violence, and the story of how the children of this family committed murder and murdered themselves in payment for a long lineage of ruin. Haunting, harrowing, and profoundly affecting, Shot in the Heart exposes and explores a dark vein of American life that most of us would rather ignore. It is a book that will leave no reader unchanged.

Amazon.com Review
"I have a story to tell. It is a story of murder told from inside the house where murder is born. It is the house where I grew up, a house that, in some ways, I have never been able to leave."

Mikal Gilmore is a Rolling Stone writer and the youngest brother of murderer Gary Gilmore, who became, in 1977, the first person to be executed in the United States after a 10-year hiatus, a case which was subsequently recounted in Norman Mailer's The Executioner's Song. This brave and eloquent book is the story that only Mikal Gilmore knows: the violence in multiple generations of his family, what the Gilmore house was like as he was growing up, his relationship with his brother, and his experience of the dramatic events surrounding Gary Gilmore's determination to be executed as planned, without appeal. Shot in the Heart pulls off the rare feat of conveying intense emotion without sentimentality or self-pity. The author's struggle is to set himself apart from the lurid true-crime fraternity of his father and brothers yet remain able to understand why he feels both guilty and lonely over his exclusion from his family's violent history. --Fiona Webster

From Publishers Weekly
Executed by firing squad in Utah in 1977 after murdering two young Mormon men, Gary Gilmore, who insisted he be put to death, gained notoriety through Norman Mailer's book The Executioner's Song and a TV film. In a haunting portrait of a dysfunctional family that molded a murderer, rock music journalist Mikal Gilmore, Gary's brother, fills in multiple gaps in Mailer's account by unearthing family secrets, traumas and horrors. Gary, frequently whipped and abandoned by his con man father, Frank Sr. (who later became a respectable publisher in Oregon), had an extensive history of robberies, arrests, suicide attempts and drug and alcohol abuse before his rage exploded in murder. We learn that Frank Sr. mistakenly suspected Gary was not his own son but the offspring of his embittered wife, Bessie, and Robert Ingram, Frank Sr.'s estranged son by a previous marriage. We also learn that Frank Jr.--long believed to be Mikal's full brother--was the issue of that long-suspected union. Mikal, who covered the case for Rolling Stone, writes with sensitivity and probing intelligence, exorcising family secrets and the stigma of being a murderer's brother. Photos. Author tour.

From Library Journal
The last months of lifetime criminal Gary Gilmore, who murdered two Mormon store clerks and then demanded that the state of Utah execute him, were painstakingly chronicled in Norman Mailer's classic The Executioner's Song (LJ 11/1/79). Shot in the Heart, by Gilmore's youngest brother, is even more harrowing. Not a "tell-all" work about growing up with a killer, it offers a broader account of a family gone haywire-a family of hauntings, beatings, hate, and, almost shockingly, love. Gilmore's book reminds us that the sins of the fathers, mothers, and brothers-our sins-can be passed on with the same devastating effect of a rogue gene that carries a dread disease. This book is not pretty, but it is highly recommended.

5 stars all the way
By Jessika Miller
Fascinating biography on the life of Gary Gilmore. While I do think this book starts off very slowly and focuses a bit on random topics, overall this is a very well written book. Mikal did a phenomenal job painting a picture of his very interesting family. Definitely a page turner.

Still powerful years after putting it down
By Jeff Gammon
As someone who grew up in Provo, Utah, the site of one of Gary Gilmore's murders, I was aware of his infamy during my youth in that staunch Mormon community. I faintly remember the hype surrounding his execution, as well as the premiere of "The Executioner's Song" years later. Perhaps it is emblematic of one's youth, but I don't think I took his crimes or emotional composition seriously. In fact, after watching "The Executioner's Song" on television, my friends and I took a drive to the motel where Gilmore murdered a desk clerk; we did it more for the sensation of being at the scene of the past crime than to commemorate the victim or to ponder the mind of the killer.
Fortunately, years later, I was able to read "Shot in the Heart," which still carries a strong emotional impact many years after the reading. Mikal Gilmore's recollections, insight, and unflinching writing create one of the most powerful books I've ever read.
Gilmore opens the door to a home that transcends the labels "dysfunctional" or "abusive." He takes us inside the house--and sometimes the heads--of those who lived a nightmare, and shows, among other things, how that experience caused one of his brothers to bury his emotions and become a lonely wanderer while it pushed another into a life of delinquency, crime, and murder. The book is a fascinating, first-hand study of the impact of the family dynamic, social and religious judgement, and civic injustice on the lives of an unassuming American family.
I sometimes scoff at the preponderance of five-star reviews on Amazon, but I cannot recommend this title more.

Great Book Ruined by Inferior Quality Printing
By Mel R. Scurbica
I had the original paperback version of this book many years ago. I decided to start doing yoga again, so I ordered a new copy. When the book arrived, I was pleased to see that it is now in a trade paperback size, compared to the standard paperback size of the original.

Then I saw the photo illustrations. The photos in the original book looked like regular black and white photos. In this edition, it looks like they took the photos straight out of the old edition, copied them on a Xerox machine, and then reprinted them, instead of going back to the original photos. If the original photos were no longer available, the publisher should have re-created them with new photos. In some cases, the quality of the photos is so bad that you can barely understand what's going on. As a matter of fact, looking at the quality of the type, I suspect that the publisher actually just made photostats (or a digital equivalent) of the original book, type and all and used that as the master to print this version. The text and photos in this edition are about the same size as the original, meaning that although the book itself is bigger, everything inside is the same size with large white borders.

While the content of the book is excellent, you can tell by the inferior quality of the printing that the publisher just doesn't care.

Complete in one breathtaking volume — Books One and Two of an unforgettable historical romance series by an exciting new author

They were two Viking lords, the brothers Wolf and Dragon, bound both by blood and by a shared ambition to end the war with their lifelong enemies, the Saxons. They know that their only hope for peace is to persuade the Saxon Lord Hawk to unite his noble family with theirs — in a bond sealed forever by the sanctity of marriage.

Together these three men will strive to overcome centuries-old rivalries and hatred. Each will unite in marriage with an extraordinary woman who has her own special gift — and her own dreams of bringing about an end to war....

Book One

In Dream of Me we meet the Viking leader Wolf Hakonson as he embarks on a mission to kidnap the Lady Cymbra, a legendary beauty Wolf mistakenly believes is the cause of war. Instead he discovers that she is a gifted healer who will challenge him to confront his deepest yearnings — and together they will become soul mates who forge a future blessed by peace.

Book Two

The drama continues in Believe in Me, when the Saxon Lord Hawk, brother of Cymbra, seeks to strengthen the alliance by wedding a Norse noblewoman. But Lady Krysta arrives bearing many secrets — including her gift for seeing what others cannot. And as an unexpected love ignites, only Krysta can sense the looming danger that threatens the peace — and Hawk as well.

From Publishers Weekly
Set in England and Norway at the end of the ninth century, this single volume contains the first two installments of Litton's debut trilogy. Through lyrical prose and sharp sensory details, Litton conveys the harshness of an era tempered by the promise of peace and the prospect of love. When fierce Norse chief Wolf Hakonson receives a scathing response to his offer of peace from Hawk, a renowned Saxon lord, and his sister, Cymbra, he kidnaps Cymbra and takes her back to his settlement. Wolf had originally planned to ravage and humiliate her, but her unparalleled beauty and compassionate demeanor lead him to marry her instead. The attraction between the two is immediate and palpable, but their path to marital bliss is beset with obstacles. First, the women of the settlement refuse to accept their Saxon mistress, who turns out to have empathic abilities, and then Wolf must face the wrath of his brother-in-law. Inevitably, true love triumphs, but the peace forged by their fortuitous union is precarious. To cement the pact between the Saxon and Norse, Hawk grudgingly agrees to take a Norse bride, and his unexpected affection for Lady Krysta, his enigmatic and fiery fiancee, is the focus of Litton's second, less dynamic entry. Although Hawk's sinister half-sister, along with a number of other scheming figures, try to drive a wedge between the couple, the story lacks the romantic tension that distinguishes the author's first installment. Nevertheless, Hawk and Krysta are charismatic characters, and Krysta's guardians a wily troll and an austere woman aptly named Raven add humor and a dash of magic to the mix. Historical romance readers will embrace this capable author and her enchanting new trilogy. (Oct. 9)Forecast: Litton is the pseudonym of a popular romance author, and Bantam is putting a lot of push behind her "debut" including Internet banner ads, print advertising in First for Women and USA Today and extensive ARC mailings. The book's glossy, gold cover and affordable two-in-one format will attract browsers.

From Booklist
In late-ninth-century England, King Alfred is on the throne, and an uneasy peace reigns between the Norse and Saxons thanks to his efforts. What better way to ensure this alliance than to forge marriages between the two? This is the foundation of Litton's trio of engaging novels. Dream of Me begins the saga with the tale of the infamous Viking, Wolf Hakonson. Wolf wants peace for his people and offers marriage to Cymbra, sister of the powerful Lord Hawke of Essex. Believe in Me tells the story of Hawke and his intended Norse bride, the fey Lady Krysta; and the final volume, Come Back to Me, involves Dragon Hakonson, Wolf's brother, and the strong-willed Saxon, Lady Rycca. Although suspension of disbelief is required a bit more in the second book than in the other two because of some dabbling in magical realism, all three share the same wonderful characteristics as they take the reader on an enjoyable journey through a well-drawn period of history. The setting, an integral part of the stories, comes vividly to life and is skillfully woven into the fabric of the characters' experiences. The characters themselves are magnetic and fully dimensional. The large and powerful men and the women, each different but with her own special "gift," are smart, funny, and believable. Readers will be captivated as each relationship unfolds, and as the series closes, they'll be anxious to devour Litton's next trilogy. Maria Hatton

Completely exceeded my expectations!
By Sidney Young
Normally, I'm not a big fan of romances set in medieval times. But "Dream of Me" completely exceeded my expectation that I had to go out and buy "Return to Me" so I can read the entire trilogy over the Christmas holidays. What is so great about this book is that the author never succumbed to the pitfalls that plagued so many of the romances of this kind. Both the hero and heroine are extremely intelligent and noble people deserving of each other's love, and even though they come from warring clans, they were always willing to talk to each other about their concerns and differneces. They were willing to work on their relationship even though they only came together for political reaons, and when every time something happens that screams "silly misunderstanding", the author always manages to sidestep that and come up with original and satisfying ways of resolving the issue.
As a sequel to "Dream of Me", "Believe in Me" pales somewhat in comparison. The hero failed to distinguish himself from Hawk, and the heroine often seem too preoccupied with her secrets. Her worries are sympathetic during the first part of the book, but towards the end her preoccupation started to get grating. It was this book that lowered my rating from 5 stars to 3 stars.

Romance Fighting actual historical references. . .
By KTM Kim
You can't go wrong! This viking hero is what EVERY woman wants to curl up next to. The book kept me reading and reading. No need to skip over boring parts to get to the next sex scene, there WERE no boring parts! There were sexual encounters to be had all over the pages! Just what I was looking for in a Viking romance novel.

I have read the trilogy, and still like Dream Of Me the best. Kinda' goes downhill from there, but not too far.

Enjoy ladies.

Red Seas Under Red Skies (Gentleman Bastards), by Scott Lynch

In his highly acclaimed debut, The Lies of Locke Lamora, Scott Lynch took us on an adrenaline-fueled adventure with a band of daring thieves led by con artist extraordinaire Locke Lamora. Now Lynch brings back his outrageous hero for a caper so death-defying, nothing short of a miracle will pull it off.

After a brutal battle with the underworld that nearly destroyed him, Locke and his trusted sidekick, Jean, fled the island city of their birth and landed on the exotic shores of Tal Verrar to nurse their wounds. But even at this westernmost edge of civilization, they can’t rest for long—and are soon back to what they do best: stealing from the undeserving rich and pocketing the proceeds for themselves.

This time, however, they have targeted the grandest prize of all: the Sinspire, the most exclusive and heavily guarded gambling house in the world. Its nine floors attract the wealthiest clientele—and to rise to the top, one must impress with good credit, amusing behavior…and excruciatingly impeccable play. For there is one cardinal rule, enforced by Requin, the house’s cold-blooded master: it is death to cheat at any game at the Sinspire.

Brazenly undeterred, Locke and Jean have orchestrated an elaborate plan to lie, trick, and swindle their way up the nine floors…straight to Requin’s teeming vault. Under the cloak of false identities, they meticulously make their climb—until they are closer to the spoils than ever.

But someone in Tal Verrar has uncovered the duo’s secret. Someone from their past who has every intention of making the impudent criminals pay for their sins. Now it will take every ounce of cunning to save their mercenary souls. And even that may not be enough.…

From Publishers Weekly
Like its roguish protagonists, Lynch's colorful sequel to 2006's The Lies of Locke Lamora is charming, unpredictable and fast on its feet and stands surprisingly well on its own given its convoluted plot. Initially poised to rob the Sinspire, the notoriously thief-proof casino where the penalty for cheating is death, Locke and his partner, Jean, are unwillingly sidetracked into joining and then leading a pirate crew, swindling their way across the sea as they had previously done on land. The cinematic influences on Lynch's fantasy setting are evident, the borrowing is mostly ingenious and the prose frequently enthralls, but tone and pacing suffer from odd inconsistencies. A handful of dark moments clash uncomfortably with the overall devil-may-care atmosphere. Most frustrating of all is the handling of key secondary character Ezri Delmastro, who shines too briefly as an energetic romantic interest for Jean. The ending promises at least one more installment, but fans may be unhappy if the saga strays too far from its amiable roots. (Aug.)

From Booklist
*Starred Review* The science-fiction caper novel constitutes a small genre to begin with (Keith Laumer and Harry Harrison may be its best-known names), but Lynch added something entirely new to it with his debut, The Lies of Locke Lamora (2006). That novel, which told the story of a young boy taken under the wing of a master thief, was set on a distant planet but at a stage in the planet's history roughly equivalent to our own pirate age. Now Locke, the talented boy who became a world-class thief, returns with a caper so big it defies all reason—to penetrate the vault of the Sinspire, the most protected casino on the planet, and take its contents. If the first novel had undercurrents of Oliver Twist, this one is more in the vein of Ocean's Eleven or The Sting: fast paced, colorful, funny, with a fiendishly intricate plot containing plenty of right-angle turns. Locke and his partner, Jean, trade banter like Redford and Newman and work their light-fingered magic with charm and panache. Lynch hasn't merely imagined a far-off world, he's created it, put it all down on paper—the smells, the sounds, the people, the feel of the place. The novel is a virtuoso performance, and sf/fantasy fans will gobble it up, though they'll have to fight with caper novel aficionados for every crumb. Pitt, David

Too Many Competing Plot Lines
By Robin Snyder
I really enjoyed the first book in this series but Red Seas Under Red Skies was a bit meh for me.

Don’t get me wrong, the dialogue between Locke and Jean is still amazing and I love the utter devotion those two have for one another. But the story was a little all over the place and I think my biggest issue is probably that the flashbacks were to a time not that long ago instead of when they were growing up gentlemen bastards. So things got a little but jumbly

***“Know something? I'd lay even odds that between the people following us and the people hunting us, we've become this city's principle means of employment. Tal Verrar's entire economy is now based on messing with us.”***

And therein lies the problem. They aren’t between a rock and a hard place but A Rock, A hard place, A cliff and an erupting volcano. There are too many adversaries and sub plots and side scams and….well I think you get what I’m saying.

I found myself getting really distracted. I’d read a little bit and then I’d wonder off into another book or three before I remembered to come back to it. It took me forever to get through the section that involved learning how to fake being a pirate.

☯ The + side ☯

☞ - Locke and Jean are ever entertaining. They have a great bromance and even though they have been through some tough times they are still like brothers.

☞ - There are always strong women in this and I was happy to see that the pirates are equal opportunity employers and there were a fair share of deadly female pirates.

☞ - The world building is really wonderful with all the alchemical concoctions and such as well as the deadly and cruel games that the nobility of different lands like to play. I will never look at a chess game in quite the same way after this.

☯ The - side ☯

☛ - Took way too long to get anywhere in the story. With far too many overlapping plot lines. It was a little hard to follow who was on whose side and how they were messing with Locke and Jean.

☛ - There was no Sabatha. Look we didn’t really get to see her in the first book but I was thinking she is Locke’s long lost love and I keep thinking she is going to pop up sometime….but she didn’t. I wish I would have known that going into this book.

☛ - The ending. Well it was unexpected that things played out like they did. I will give Scott Lynch that but idk it made most of the story seem a bit pointless to me.

Overall:

The writing and dialogue is really good I just don’t think I liked the story all that much. But this is maybe a story that you like better the second time you read through it since you knew where things are going.

The Lies of Scott Lynch
By David R
Scott's [author] bad habit of chronological jumping is further exacerbated in Red Seas Under Red Skies. In Book 1: The Lies of Locke Lamora, Lynch would sometimes jump backwards in time at the start of a new chapter--without warning. He typically did this to enrich the following chapters, providing the reader with key cultural context or valuable background info.

Sometimes he would use this technique to mislead reader expectations; after a scene in which the opposition appears to have the drop on Locke, Scott would flash back to a time where Locke is preparing for the scene we were just in, and show that everything is going as planned. The purpose of this is to let the readers see why the opposing characters *think* they have the upper hand when in fact they do not. It's easier to believe in trickery when you can see it from the side of the person being tricked. If you already know the ploy, you're less likely to believe that Locke's targets were beguiled.

But in this book, the author jumps forwards and backwards in time seemingly at random and it becomes more of a nuisance as the book goes on. Rather than using his literary "time travel" as an effective tool like in Book 1, Lynch flies about his chronology and bamboozles the audience. Just when you begin to get involved in a certain scene or sequence of events, he rips the rug out from under you and puts you someplace utterly unrelated to the last chapter. Usually someplace impressively dull. Now you've got to reorient where the heck you are and get re-involved (or bored if his inept hook eluded you) with whatever is going on.

The Ugly Part: [spoilers]
Wow. This guy messed up big time. He began his book with Locke and Jean escaping Camorr, Jean proactively establishing new connections and influence while Locke recovered from wounds inflicted during his battle against the Grey King from Book 1. The two boldly stake out a new heist, The Sinspire (the coolest name for a gambling establishment ever). This time their confidence game isn't against the gullible nobility of Camorr; instead it's a ruthless, clever, and iron-fisted man named Requin who by wealth and reputation is a king in his own right. The games are uncheatable, but our protagonists are so great at their work they find ways to cheat without getting caught. Their winnings earn them an invitation to the highest level of the Sinspire. Now the game is on, Locke trying to beguile not just big-shot Requin but his sharp-witted wife Selendri as well. You're immersed, fully invested in the outcome of the heist and then...!

WE INTERRUPT THIS EXCELLENT STORY FOR 200 PAGES OF: "SAILING FOR DUMMIES."

Featuring:
100 pages of pointless flashbacks that lend nothing to the story or just aggravate the audience. On the isle of Salon Corbeau (or whatever its called) we become enraged seeing how sadistic the inhabitants of this aristocratic isle are towards poor people, kittens, and puppies. Locke wants revenge. WE want revenge. Do we get it? Not really. Just jump out of sequence to some other chapter we don't care about until it's been so long we barely remember the place.

Learn everything you never wanted to know about nautical terminology, pirate lingo, rigging, boring superstitions, and tedious ship maintenance, all in 200 easy pages. Watch our daring heroes as they engage in the most thrilling, death-defying gambit of their lives! Mopping floorboards with vinegar, stacking supply crates, and staring at maps.

Watch in awe as the master of lies, Locke Lamora, a man so slippery he stole almost an entire kingdom's wealth just by acting confident, is caught in every lie he tells. Behold as this man of myth, the Thorn of Camorr, who can play his emotions and facial expressions the way Mozart plays piano is effortlessly outwitted by some stupid pirate woman we don't care about. Experience the disappointment as hollow, stock, side characters are able to see through all his deceptions with ease.

Even your characters are bored, Lynch! How do you think WE feel???

I actually expected the last line of this book to read, "Then Locke woke up from his magical pirate dream and went back to being a legendary thief instead of a clumsy, boring, idiot."

To top it all off, they don't even steal the right thing. They mean to steal Requin's priceless paintings but they end up stealing the fake ones. Which is completely UNLIKE Lamora to do. So its a book about thieves that's actually about pretty much anything except thieving. And when the finally DO get back to thieving they steal the complete wrong thing. How stupid. I just hope the third book doesn't suck this bad. Guess we'll find out in my next review: Republic of Thieves.

Great follow-up to the first!
By Amazon Customer
There are a lot of critics that have given the second book in this series a bad rating, for what reason is beyond me. The first book was epic and was full of New twists and turns. We are also introduced to these two new characters that are shiny and new, and it seem to bug people that the second book wasn't as shiny and new as the first.

The second book, in my opinion, holds just as much fabulous waster as the first. I get to read about and see the two characters grow that I met in the first book. We get to see another story with it own twists and turns. We get to see an honest story where the "good guys" do not always win. We also get to read a story that inspires a world that reminds me of Treasure Island and the Count of Monte Cristo (I'll be criticized for that last one, but who cares )

On to the third and final book...hoping for another 5 star.

Peace

The Collected Short Stories of Louis L'Amour, Volume 5: Frontier Stories, by Louis L'Amour

Louis L’Amour’s world is built on those dramatic moments when men and women cast their fears, doubts, and pasts behind them and plunge into the unknown–into split-second decisions with life-and-death consequences. Nowhere is that more evident than in this latest collection of stories set on the American frontier. Here L’Amour takes us across a bold, beautifully rendered landscape where strangers may come to trust–or kill–one another; where old scores haunt new lives and the wrong choice leaves unwitting victims. Even at the best of times, this is a world in which every man and woman must be responsible for their own survival.

This keepsake volume features unforgettable moments and timeless characters. From fugitives to visionaries, from fortune seekers and drifters seeking a new life to young women trying to build homes in an all too often lawless world, the characters in these pulse-pounding stories are vintage L’Amour. Together in this vivid, rollicking collection of stories, they bring to life the American spirit and confirm Louis L’Amour’s place at the very top of the pantheon of American writers.

Book is great!
By Caelo
I've read several of these stories and they're great. I'm not sure I can agree with the reviewer who said the stories are not by L'Amour. As I look at the index, I note numerous stories which have appeared in previously published versions, such as the "Ghost Maker" and the "Cactus Kid" stories. So if these are not authentic L'Amour then they weren't years ago either when they appeared under his byline. In any case, these are a great read!

Blind Alley: An Eve Duncan Forensics Thriller, by Iris Johansen

Wrapped up in a brutal investigation, Eve Duncan, the signature character of #1 New York Times bestselling author Iris Johansen, walks into an obsessive killer’s trap . . . and enters into a deadly game that awakens her own darkest nightmares.

Forensic sculptor Eve Duncan puts a face on the victims of violent crimes. She’s working on the skull of a newly discovered Jane Doe, her face destroyed beyond recognition. But whoever killed this poor girl wasn’t trying to hide her identity. The plan is far more horrifying. As the face begins to appear under Eve’s skilled hands, she gets the shock of her life: The victim is someone she knows all too well. Someone who isn’t dead. Yet.

To stop a twisted psychopath, Eve must put her own life on the line. But that’s not the worst of it—when her adopted daughter, Jane, reveals a bizarre connection to the case, Eve can’t stop her from joining the hunt for the killer . . . a chase that will lead to a terrifying confrontation.

From Publishers Weekly
Forensic sculptor Eve Duncan returns in this far-fetched but expertly plotted, eminently entertaining novel. When detective Joe Quinn is called to investigate the murder of a young woman whose skin has been peeled away from her skull, he presses the overloaded Eve to work her grisly magic. Eve is shocked to realize that the victim bears an uncanny resemblance to Jane MacGuire, the headstrong 17-year-old she and Joe have adopted, and who was already menaced by another serial killer in 1999's The Killing Game. Then a suspicious inspector from Scotland Yard, Mark Trevor, arrives with the grim news that a string of women with similar features have been murdered in Italy, England and Spain. A serial killer he calls Aldo has been working his way around the globe, butchering women who look like Cira, a beautiful young actress from the ancient Roman city of Herculaneum (which was destroyed by the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius), whom he holds responsible for his father's death (such is the logic of the insane). Since Jane looks like Cira (and, incidentally, has been having nightmares about being her and trying to escape the volcano's destruction) she will be his prey—or bait. Johansen fans will recall that Eve lost her biological daughter, Bonnie, to a serial killer, so her desire to bring Aldo to justice is tied up with her still-sharp grief. Meanwhile, Jane behaves like a typical teenager, living in denial of her own mortality while feeling intoxicated by the sexy air of peril that now surrounds her. Aldo never comes fully into focus as a villain, but that doesn't matter much, since one of the real engines of fear in the novel is Jane's burgeoning sexuality.

From Booklist
In her latest thriller about Atlanta detective Joe Quinn and the love of his life, forensic sculptor Eve Duncan, Joe gives Eve a skull to reconstruct. Eerily enough, the face resembles 17-year-old Jane MacGuire, who has been offered sanctuary by Eve and Joe after surviving a rough-and-tumble life on the streets. Now it seems that a killer is trying to erase all evidence of her face because it is identical to that of a statue of a woman who died during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Several look-alikes have already been killed in Europe, and Scotland Yard sends in hunky Mark Trevor to help. Eve mistrusts him, but Jane, who has had recurring nightmares related to the killings, believes that he's there to help her. Eve and Joe want to protect Jane, but the intrepid teenager knows that unless she confronts the killer, she will live the rest of her life in fear. Johansen has become adept at mixing supernatural elements with intriguing suspense, and her new tale will please both fans and new converts with its unpredictable journey from Atlanta to the archaeological digs of Herculaneum in Italy. This does more than just hurt! It's truly painful!
By Paul Weiss
"Blind Alley" is the fifth novel in the continuing story of Eve Duncan, forensic sculptor, Joe Quinn, Atlanta police detective and Jane MacGuire, their precocious seventeen year old adopted daughter rescued from the streets. Be warned that much of this review might be construed as spoilers but I'm betting that it's not going to matter much since you'll likely be giving the book a pass anyway!

I used to treat Iris Johansen as a sure thing! You know what I mean - the kind of author whose new title you'd add to your reading list without even caring what the plot line was or you'd pick up a copy at the store without even bothering to flip open the dust jacket for a peek! "Blind Alley" buried that thought - cold, deep and fast! It was a great deal more than just bad - it was truly painful!

A shadowy serial killer named Aldo is on the loose slaughtering women in a most unseemly, gruesome fashion. Carving their living faces right off their skulls, Aldo imagines himself responsible for the systematic elimination of all women who resemble Cira, a courtesan/actress/prostitute killed two thousand years ago in the town of Herculaneum when Vesuvius erupted. It would seem that Aldo is a little upset at having lost the love and attention of his father, an archeologist who became obsessed with Cira when he discovered her statue and some details of her life.

As if that isn't deep enough in left field as the premise for a thriller, imagine the eyebrows you'll raise when you read that Jane MacGuire, Eve Duncan and Joe Quinn's adopted 17 year old daughter is a ringer for Cira. Not only does she find herself stalked by Aldo but some inexplicable psychological attachment to Cira plagues Jane with regular nightmares in which she is trapped in caves or tunnels fleeing for her life from the eruption of Vesuvius.

It doesn't end there - Johansen tosses Mark Trevor into the mix. He's a con and an antiquities smuggler (picture Lovejoy with a nasty streak!) who had a run-in with Aldo and is intent on killing him. To that end he intrudes himself into Eve Duncan's and Joe Quinn's life and sets himself up as Jane's protector. Now, I'm no prude but the scene in which Trevor, a grown man at least as old as Joe, has a near sexual encounter with Jane, a typical seventeen year old teenager with respect to her hormones and sexuality, is just plain distasteful and, frankly, scored well into the red zone on the "yuk" meter!

There is just so much wrong with this novel, it's difficult to know where to begin and where to stop - nightmares that start, happen and end with no explanation or psychological development at all; unlike any previous Johansen novel I've read, the characters and dialogue seem trite, wooden and completely contrived; the outcome of Mark Trevor as a character is left spectacularly un-resolved; Eve Duncan's obsession with her murdered daughter, Bonnie, continues unabated and is definitely becoming downright irritating; a wonderful sub-plot concerning Eve's forensic reconstruction of a real skull from the Vesuvius eruption was simply deep-sixed!

I still own a few Johansen titles that I haven't read so there is perhaps hope. But she'll have to prove to me that she hasn't jumped the shark before I'll spend another cent on a new title!

I didn't mind it.
By Mathew A. Shember
My mom let me use her hybrid for awhile and she had the audio book for "Blind Alley" The radio was boring so I decided to listen to it.

I see from the other reviews this is the 5th book in a series involving the forensic sculptor Eve Duncan, Atlanta Police Detective Joe Quinn, and their adopted daughter Jane MacGuire.

Enter the crazed serial killer named Aldo who is bent on killing any woman that remotely looks like somebody named Cira who later turns out to have been a 2000 year old actor/concubine noted for her beauty. His obsession makes him carve off their faces in order to destroy the face from the world. In his travels he notices Jayne who appears to be the living image of Cira. His quest is almost over! He found her at last.

Overall, the plot was ok. I could follow along and I could imagine the settings. Others complain about it but I am coming from not having read the previous books. One thing I will mention is the characters don't fall back on the other books so you don't feel you missed anything.

I liked the character Mark Trevor as he came across as a good Anti-Hero. Yet, I was interested in knowing more about him and his sidekick Bartlet.

I will admit I expected a trite situation where a borrowed skeleton from ancient times used to lure Aldo would turn out to be Cira. All through the book the question is asked did she survive? Eve as part of the trap does a reconstruction with the promise of doing the real reconstruction. after dealing with Also. When she finishes the final work, you are simply left with her exclaiming "my god" and that was it. I suspect that was the intention but the author changed her mind and dropped it.

The ending was ok. But it left me unsatiated. I expected more and it stopped.

Bernadette Dunne does the reading and in the beginning she annoyed me with her attempts to give accents to the characters. Not to mention that Jayne and Eve seemed to whine a great deal. However, I was able to tune it out as the story picked up.

I will probably check out her early works and will look for more if Trevor comes back.
