About the Author
The Editors of the American Heritage Dictionaries and Thesauri are trained lexicographers with a varied array of interests and expertise. Most of the editors hold graduate degrees and have studied at least one foreign language. Several have degrees in linguistics or in the history of the English language. Others have degrees in science or sometimes other disciplines. All the editors familiarize themselves with the vocabulary in specific subject areas, collect materials on new developments and usage, and work in association with consultants to ensure that the content of our publications is as accurate and as up-to-date as possible.

Still the best dictionary for American English. Also...

This is the best dictionary for American English, sort of our Oxford English Dictionary. So, what sets it apart? Two words: Usage Panel. The dictionary employs a panel of writers to clue you in to proper usage. So, while the dictionary give exhaustive information about the way words are used (descriptive), it also gives plenty of weight to the way they should be used (prescriptive). This means that you'll see less formal usage showing up in definitions, but the Usage Panel will be there to help clarify what's appropriate for written American English, and what's not. Though, admittedly, this younger generation of panelists is less conservative than the old guard -- yes, "snuck" is now apparently acceptable. Recommended for its sensible definitions, helpful illustrations, and excellent secondary content. Essential equipment for any writer.
For word-based recreation, there's THE Book of Word Games: Parlett's Guide to 150 Great and Quick-to-Learn Word Games. And if you enjoy etymology, try The Secret Life of Words: How English Became English.

dumbed-down version of "The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language"

Got this new paperback edition primarily as a spelling arbiter for our daily after-lunch game of Bananagram. We'd been using our awesome, hefty, 1969 hardback "American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language" (*****+++). But we need a more portable dictionary to take on trips and a more up-to-date dictionary for currently used words and abbreviations. Some would suggest we use the internet, but we don't have a laptop nor an ipad nor do I want to use up units on my Tracfone cell. A hard copy dictionary is a must for us. Besides, when looking up a particular word's spelling in a dictionary, other words catch your eye and expand your range of usable words--words that hadn't occurred to you or that you simply didn't know (much like when using a library's now obsolete card catalog to look up a book title, you'd find a treasure trove of useful collateral and tangential information on the adjacent cards you'd thumbed through). But I digress...
I have 2 major complaints.
1) I was surprised by the paperback's small size: it's a pocketbook-size paperback though thick as a paving stone. To cram 70,000+ words into its 2-column layout, they had to use a tiny font (looks like a 9) which, depending on the extent of one's diminishing eyesight, might require the use of a magnifying glass. Had the editors opted to eliminate the scanty number of images (vestiges of the full-size Heritage), a more readable size 10 or 12 font might have been possible.
2) I assumed I was getting a paperback version of "The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language." Nowhere does Amazon state the number of words in the hardback--just that there are 10,000 new words. The paperback claims to have 70,000+ words. No way to compare them. Unfortunately the paperback is missing too many words, variant spellings, slang, and abbreviations which our '69 Heritage has--so we still depend on it and use the new one as backup for new words. We're now using TWO dictionaries. Hrrrumph! The paperback is a dumbed-down version of the '69 (also of the 2011 I'd guess). It came through with "fax" for facsimile, but no "dink" for drop shot. "Gee" for exclamation, but no "jee" as variant spelling (in the '69) which is odd because it's a euphemism/abbreviation for Jesus. The list goes on....We've been frustrated by too many missing words.
I just checked Amazon's listing for "The American Heritage Dictionary" and came upon the "Desktop" version which claims to have 70,000+ words. My guess is the Fifth Edition paperback we got is a paperback version of the "Desktop" for it too claims to have 70,000+ words. We've been spoiled by the real , but now aged, McCoy...The paperback is no substitute for the hardback '69 (or 2011 I assume).
How about a paperback version of the real McCoy?

Next to Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary American Heritage is the Best

I love that the dictionary has photos of people with their name. This enhances the search for definitions and spellings, especially names of historical and cultural people. This is the second time I've purchased this book. After 10 years of use, the first one is getting a much deserved rest.
