"When I got home, Sue was a little angry," Houseman says about his wife. "I'd neglected to leave her a note about the meeting. Consequently, supper had turned out to be a problem. She'd taken care of it by making a taco-type soup, so it was still warm when I got there. She'd eaten." The first half of Harstad's good-natured debut may read like Fargo meets Dragnet, but this police procedural turns downright explosive once deputy sheriff Carl Houseman gets to the heart of the strange murders that are tearing apart his small Iowa farming town. The action begins when a 911 call leads Houseman to the site of a ritual murder with multiple victims and no witnesses left in sight; further evidence reveals that an infant may have been sacrificed and that other victims will follow. The first round of police work leads Houseman and his colleagues to the members of a devilish cult, but the serial killer remains at large until Houseman comes to suspect the town pastor and his wife. What follows is an intriguing, suspenseful showdown at a local church. Harstad's deceptively sparse style is full of hard-boiled drollery, even when mundane details threaten to crowd the plot. If the labyrinthine network of Satanic cult members gets a bit too involved, the descriptions of the police work rival Wambaugh's best, and the action scenes maintain a precision that keeps the tension high. After 26 years' police work in northeastern Iowa, Harstad seems poised for a successful second career.

The very best procedural novels are those that follow police personnel through the solving of a crime from its discovery to evidence-gathering to the apprehension of the guilty. The reader knows as much as the police do, and the writer accurately describes investigative techniques and legal process. As a former deputy sheriff from Iowa, Harstad has the procedure down; his storytelling ability also sets him far ahead of other first-time novelists in this genre. Finding four people who appear to have been killed in satanic rituals whips a normally peaceful rural Iowa town into a frenzy. The reader follows the Nation County sheriff's department as it works with state detectives and city police to unearth information about the clandestine affairs of a satanic cult. Deputy Carl Houseman is the epitome of a police officer, and his humanity, intelligence, and ability place him at personal risk as the case races to a heartstopping climax. Fictionalizing a real case that he worked on, Harstad uses unadorned prose to write about the evil that can exist anywhere. Cop Talk

I enjoyed the story and getting to know the main character, but there may have been too much 10-4ing for my taste. It was a police procedural but, because of its small-town Iowa setting, it was better than most procedurals, with the obvious exception of McBain's 87th Precincts.

Alot of potential but a weak ending

I'm not that familiar with police procedurals. I had never even heard of the genre until browsing on Amazon. I saw this book and decided to give it a try. I'm not sure where this book stands in comparison of other police procedurals but as far as a suspense story I was really pleased with the book all the way through until the very end. It's nearly impossible to explain without ruining the ending. The author seems to have run out of steam and just decided to end the whole thing in a few pages. There is one key event that he just completely takes back which makes for a happier ending but short changes the integrity of the story and cheats the reader. If you liked the movie "The Game" with Michael Douglas but hated the ending you'll feel the same way about this book.
The thing I did like was the author's style. The characters were likable and the dialog was fairly believable. The main character, Carl Houseman is funny at times and it's nice to read about a hero that's middle aged and balding. The supporting cast are all well thought out and there isn't a lot of the sterotypical characters you usually find in crime novels.
All in all I liked the book enough to buy his next. If you've read this and liked it I would recommend Dirty White Boys by Stephen Hunter, it's similar and has a more believable, satisfying ending.

A riveting page-turner with an authentic voice.

Having worked in a small rural sheriff's department, I can say that Harstad's narrative is right on target. I could easily imagine some of the very same personalities and political conflicts he describes. This book had me hooked from page one. Whenever I had to put it down to deal with real life, I couldn't stop thinking about it and being very impatient for some more reading time. A very fast-paced read.
I took this book with me to read while on vacation and had it finished in a day. I'm very much looking forward to reading Harstad's new novel.
