Dean Koontz virtually invented the cross-genre novel, and in One Door Away from Heaven he mixes an action thriller with post-X-Files alien paranoia to remarkable effect. Micky Bellsong is a young woman at a crisis point in her life, using a stay at her Aunt Geneva's to sort things out. Then the precocious and deformed Leilani Klonk walks into her life, telling stories of her stepfather and drugged-up mother, who believe aliens will beam the girl into their mothership and heal her deformities before her 10th birthday. But tales of the stepfather's vicious past, including his hand in several murders, leave Micky believing that a far more terrible fate awaits her friend. So when the parents take off with Leilani, Micky pursues.
As is typical with a Koontz novel, nothing turns out to be what it seems, and the meticulously crafted plot tightens like a noose with every turn of the page. His characters are exceptionally drawn, driving the novel forward with realism and warmth. Micky is one of his more attractive young heroines, but the real star is Leilani, a mature young girl whose plucky nature and sparkling dialogue instantly make her Koontz's most memorable creation. Koontz's latest is powered by an impassioned stand against utilitarian bioethics, and it's chock-a-block with trademark characters vulnerable kids, nurturing parental substitutes, a dog of above-average intelligence and a villain of insuperable nastiness sure to provoke a pleasurable conditioned response from his readers. The discursive story coalesces from two converging subplots steeped in the weirdness of fringe ufology: in one, loser Michelina Bellsong struggles to save crippled nine-year-old Leilani Klonk from an evil stepdad planning to pass off her imminent disposal as a benevolent alien abduction; in the other, a strange boy who goes by the alias Curtis Hammond is the quarry of two cross-country manhunts, one led by the FBI and the other by mass murderers who, like the messianic Curtis, may not be what they seem. En route to a pyrotechnic finale in rural Idaho, Koontz shoots bull's-eyes at target issues that shape his theme, including assisted suicide, substance abuse, the irresponsibility of the counterculture and the goofiness of true-believer ET enthusiasts. Koontz's once form-fitting style has gotten baggy of late, however, and readers may find themselves wishing he had better filtered the flights of fancy his characters sometimes indulge at chapter length. For all that, the novel is surprisingly focused on its inspirational message "we are the instruments of one another's salvation and only by the hope that we give to others do we lift ourselves out of the darkness into light" and conveys it with such conviction that only the most critical will demur. Koontz's latest is a tale of redemption from fallen lives and of faith in the universe--nothing we haven't seen before. Not to say it isn't entertaining. It will enthrall readers. But nothing extraordinary awaits them at the end. The writing is baroque, and there seems to be no reason for much of Koontz's elaborateness. Micky, just emerging from a nasty period in her life, is living with her kooky Aunt Geneva when she meets bright, witty Leilani--Lani for short--who despises the pity people feel for her when they see her mutant hand and braced leg. She would rather they remembered her wit. Micky finds meaning in her own life when she discovers the horrible truth of Lani's, and, finally given something other than anger to focus on, rides to the rescue. Interwoven with this story is that of a boy fleeing the FBI and creatures far, far worse, who killed his mother and will stop at nothing to kill him. The book's revelations, while not exactly predictable, are not earth shattering. Suffice it to say that the tale is told well enough to satisfy, besides Koontz's faithful fandom, the less jaded and more hopeful among us. Regina Schroeder

Two tales cobbled together

I think ONE DOOR AWAY FROM HEAVEN could've been split into two separate books. The fact that they weren't results in more pages for the buck, but also perhaps a less satisfying storyline.
On one track, we have a 10-year old boy, whose family has been slaughtered, fleeing cross-country from the killers. He comes upon the isolated Hammond farm in the wee hours inhabited by its sleeping residents. Within no time, the killers track the boy to the home and butcher the family. The boy continues his flight, taking along the Hammond's pet dog and the identity of the Hammond son, Curtis. Eventually, "Curtis" teams up with identical twins Cass and Polly - statuesque, street smart, pistol-packin', blond, ex-Las Vegas showgirls roaming the West chasing UFO sightings in a motorhome purchased with divorce settlement monies.
There's something strange about Curtis. His knowledge of the world is solely based on 9,658 viewed movies.
On a parallel track, we have 9-year old Leilani, born physically deformed like her older brother Lukipela because of their mother Sinsemilla's incessant and heavy drug use. Both Leilani and her mother are under the control of the former's stepfather, Preston Maddoc. The family travels around the country in a converted bus to sites of potential extraterrestrial landfalls. Preston claims that the ETs can heal Leilani's deformities. The girl knows better. The way she tells it, Preston, aka Dr. Doom, is a serial killer, who murdered her brother in the Montana woods on his tenth birthday. Leilani fears she's next.
Leilani befriends Micky Bellsong, a jobless, ex-con at rock bottom, who lives with her Aunt Gen in the Los Angeles area. After hearing Leilani's story, Micky decides to redeem her life by rescuing the girl from Preston and Sinsemella, but the three depart before she can act. To help track down and recover the girl, Micky employs private detective Noah Farrel, who's burdened with guilt for having let his father beat his sister into a permanent coma seventeen years before.
Have I lost you in the melodrama yet? In any case, all players eventually collide in Idaho at the dilapidated home of a pathetic recluse that gives new meaning to the term "pack rat".
This thriller is no better than a beach read, though it may take several days while soaking up the carcinogenic UV rays. That the book would have been better split into two is evidenced by the awkward last chapter, which made me think that the author, having arrived at his publisher's deadline, mused, "Uh-oh, now what do I do to wrap this up?"
The conclusion pretty much brings to closure the Leilani arm of the story, but leaves so much unclarified about Curtis's situation and future that I smell a sequel coming. That's fine, as long as it includes Polly and Cass.
ONE DOOR AWAY FROM HEAVEN better serves, perhaps, as an outlet for the author's loathing for utilitarian bioethics, that philosophy which condones (and, at its extreme, promotes) the elimination of those members of society deemed unproductive, i.e. those who are aged, deformed, insane, terminally ill, or just dirt poor.
The author also reveals his predilection for dogs. I'm a cat person myself.

Loved the ride, ready for another one!!!

I never rush through a Koontz novel because I know it will be months before I get my hands on another one. So, I can't speak to it keeping me up nights in order to finish it because I intentionally read only a few chapters a day. In this way I can extend the pleasure derived therefrom. Something like Sting does with sexual enjoyment when he employs the mechanics of yoga. But,I digress.
What has brought me back to Koontz book after book is his ability to marry horror, suspense, AND sincere human emotions into one smooth read. I've read other authors who were good writers of horror, or suspense, but who lacked a sense of hope in their stories. I'm like most of you, my life isn't perfect. I'm the mother of a special needs child, my day is full of mundane work and my relatives are driving me to distraction. It's wonderful to read about people who are facing challenges similar to what I'm going through but who manage to survive it. That gives people like me a boost.
Another reason I read Koontz is because the women in his books are fierce! His female characters empower me. And they're realistic. I don't know any weak, turn-her-ankle-and-get-killed types. Women fight back in a Koontz novel.
Here's a rundown of what you're in store for: Shapeshifters, good and bad. Indomitable cyborg warrior-women--ur,girls. Dogs aplenty. Psychopaths galore. Vile bioethicists. Sweet movie buffs. Angry insectile aliens. Golden retrievers (gotta have at least one of those pups). Triumphant human spirit. Nail-biting suspense. Oh, did I mention twin pistol-packing showgirls?
Thanks for the entertainment, Mr. Koontz. Can't wait for the final book in the Christopher Snow trilogy, hint, hint!

Knocking on Heaven's Door

What can one say about Dean Koontz? This man is a virtual automaton who cranks out books pretty much as if he were a worker on an assembly line. That comparison falls mute, however, when one realizes that Koontz manufactures pretty incredible, consistent works of literature.
One Door Away From Heaven is one of Koontz's strongest literary ventures to date. In substance, it is comparable to his early eighties book Watchers. Yes, there is a cute, loveable dog that can type, albeit for totally different reasons. For a refreshing change, Koontz does not vilify the government too badly. He does take a rather lofty shot at California's governor and the energy problems recently experienced in that particular state.
Heaven contains more Koontzisms and raw humor than is normal. Some of the characters, particularly Aunt Gen and Sinsemilla, are refreshingly new types in the Koontz universe. There are the normal "baddy" types like Dr. Doom that are good for typical Hitchcock type suspense.
Koontz does his normal trick of telling segments of various peoples' lives and experiences, finally connecting the parallel story lines in typical roller coaster fashion. Most suspense fans will find themselves pulled into Heaven and unable to close the book until the very last page is digested. More than a good read, Heaven is an experience similar to the aftermath of 9/11 and will, like the WTC experience, revive faith in the basic resilience and goodness of the human race.
