Hopeful it will help. 1 con: weight training exercises cannot be done at home

Haven't started the actual exercises yet, but I'm hopeful they will help with prolapse I was diagnosed with after my fourth baby. My one con to this book is that I wish the resistance/weight training portion had been written with the possibility of doing all of the exercises from home. I have four kids and don't like using the daycare at the gym. I like to relax and enjoy my exercises either in the early morning or late evening when kids are in bed. I'll probably supplement the core with a separate at home weight training program. I also agree with other reviewers who said the kindle version was hard to follow when matching up directions with pictures, etc. It definitely needs to be reformatted so that the numbered directions are easier to follow! Also, one more update that is needed would be a more thorough "review of exercises" section that can be referred to as a short-hand list. The way it is currently is just a list of exercises with a picture at the end of the chapter. It would be better to have a list of exercises along with the # of counts to hold and # of reps. I've made my own detailed reference list like this to use. I'll update my review after doing the exercises for a few weeks.

Has Age 60 Kicked Your Butt?

If it has, it's because your core has gotten weak. Every person my age has something going wrong with their hips, back, neck, shoulders, knees, ankles, or feet - all problems that are addressed and helped with this quick, easy exercise routine. It's a no-brainer.

At our age, the spinal and deep tummy muscles necessary for keeping us upright - the core - have gotten weak, and when that happens, fragility and instability starting at the core radiate out to the rest of the musculoskeletal system. These simple exercises wake up those sleepy core muscles in a big hurry, going to the very root of all the other problems. After a few weeks of doing this program, it's likely you will feel like a totally different person.

I thought I was doing everything right: I was doing yoga, walking a lot, swimming, and lifting weights at the gym. But I never felt any better. And it was because the core muscles were not being targeted. I would have had no idea how to target them if it weren't for this great book and Peggy's short list of exercises. And my favorite thing: they're all done lying down!

The exercises are challenging at first - think a mixture of isometrics, yoga, and pilates - but there are so few repetitions and it's over so quickly that you don't mind. It is a surprisingly effective program for being relatively easy as it is. There are three sets of exercises at increasing levels of difficulty, to accommodate your increasing strength. The author gives a lot of information about how to do them properly, and lots of tips, so be prepared to spend a little time reading first. The book is written for women, but I think it can benefit men just as much.

In my case the aging showed up as a bad knee, which was causing me to favor one hip, and things were spiraling downward. I also had low energy, a bulging tummy, neck and headache problems, and general malaise. I couldn't hike, run, or dance anymore, and I thought that's how it was going to be for the duration. Then I miraculously found Peggy's book.

My knee stopped hurting after doing the exercises one time. I couldn't believe it. After six weeks, I was back to hiking, gardening, running, and dancing. Now I've been on the program for four months, and I feel GREAT, my back is strong, and my tummy is getting flat. Lifting, bending, stooping - all things that were difficult before - are easy now. In fact, everything is easy now, and I want to do more. I started feeling so strong that I needed more challenge and added a ballet conditioning DVD to my exercise routine. I haven't felt this good since I was thirty. Peggy Brill, thank you so much for this book. It changed my life.

So if you are one of those over-60 folks (or even younger!) who is having pain, weakness, lack of energy and drive, any kind of musculoskeletal problem at all, and a general feeling that it's all downhill from here, give this program a try. It takes fifteen minutes - what have you got to lose? It might change your life like it did mine.

A Lifesaver

This book was a lifesaver when I was waiting for a hip replacement. I was at the advanced level by the time I learned I needed surgery. If I would do the workout right after getting out of bed, I could walk with a cane and sometimes without one. If I didn't do the workout, I couldn't even walk with a cane. This routine is great for everyday maintenance too, to keep in the body alignment and maintain flexibility.

Everyone Is In Sales

Overall, it was pretty solid. I am not a sales person, but since I have heard many times from Zig Ziglar, "Everyone is in sales," it was prudent to get some background.

I liked the way the book was presented: first an ideal situation, then comments by five top salespeople in their fields. The book is a touch on the old side, but the content seems timeless. It is strange to read about concepts like the importance of service. This idea has been espoused decades ago, yet rarely have I found this in companies for which I have worked or dealt. It's all lip service.

I have dozens of business books in queue, and I often discard a book after the first twenty or thirty pages—there just isn't enough time to read all of them. I picked up this book as a lark. I found it for $1 at a used book store. I figured I would give it my twenty page rule, and if it hadn't grabbed me, I would toss it. The book was by no means a page-turner, but it kept me coming back.

Will I keep this for reference? Probably not. It was worth reading, especially as an introduction to sales, but since I am not in sales I will donate it to Goodwill.

It's rare, in a Todd tale, that even the innocent should escape unscathed. The authors demonstrate their skills once more in A Cold Treachery, which sends the shell-shocked and lonely Rutledge to probe the winter massacre of a sheep-farming family in northern England, at the same time as he searches for the missing and only witness to that chilling savagery.

"It was beyond comprehension," we're told of the December 1919 violence, near the rustic Lake District town of Urskdale, that left Gerald and Grace Elcott and three of their progeny shot to death. A fourth child, 10-year-old Josh Robinson, is nowhere to be found. He's thought to have fled from the scene, only to have perished in a recent blizzard. Coming off the grim proceedings recalled in A Fearsome Doubt, Rutledge--shackled as always to the nattering ghost of Hamish MacLeod, a Scotsman he'd ordered executed on a World War I battlefield--must determine whether the murderer was a passing stranger, or a local who'd previously concealed his or her aptitude for barbarity--and might kill again. Gerald Elcott's less-successful brother, Paul, has ample motive (he’s next in line to inherit their clan's farm), as does Grace's sister, Janet Ashton, who just happens to arrive in Urskdale with a gun in hand (supposedly to protect her sibling from Paul's anger). Yet there's another, more frightening possibility--that Josh, Gerald's stepson, upset by the breakup of his parents, committed these atrocities. Desperate for clues, and with his impatient superior threatening to replace him on this case, Rutledge still can't claim to know who, or what, was behind the carnage.

After their disappointing standalone, The Murder Stone, it's a relief to see the Todd pair return to the "gloomy, defeated and exhausted" postwar England of Ian Rutledge, where no end of dire dramas appear to lurk. Like its half-dozen predecessors, stretching back to A Test of Wills, A Cold Treachery satisfies with its copious period details, characters traumatized by fate and failures, and a bedeviled young protagonist who must solve other people's problems before his own. Todd's ear for dialogue is superb, and he effortlessly conjures up the harsh life of a simple farm community through his vivid characters. What a Find!

If you like good edge of your seat whodunits set in quaintly atmospheric British locales, if you like a story where every character may have ample reason to have done away with the deceased, if you like a yarn that brings in some psychology and even some of the "big questions" of life, if you like eccentric but believable supporting characters, if you like to be entertained and at the same time, learn just a bit about a time gone by, if you like to see justice done and all of the loose ends tied up by the last page, look no further than here, and at all of the Charles Todd, Inspector Ian Rutledge mysteries.

Having cut my teeth on Agatha Christie and then savored the elegant sophistication of Miss Dorothy L Sayers, I have been -- how shall we put it -- eager for mysteries that come up to those high standards. Often disappointed. Until now.

Charles Todd's multi-dimensional, flawed Scotland Yard Inspector Ian Rutledge is appealing, endearing and real. He is not a caricature detective, nor a foil for red herrings and twisted plots (even though they abound in Todd's works). His persona is such that we would enjoy a book about his life that had NO mystery to it... Not that I am suggesting such a move to the authors....

Speaking of authors... Yes plural. Having read one book, I kept thinking, who is this author. Turns out that Charles Todd is American, not British, and Charles Todd is actually a mother and son team, writing together to create these wonderful books set in post W W I Britain.

And then there is Hamish, Ian's ghostly alter-ego, traveling companion, and imaginary friend. When my local bookstore owner told me the basics about Ian and his now-dead Scottish sergeant, who likes to ride in the back seat of Rutledge's car and "back seat drive" the investigations, I thought this was all too droll. Well, droll it is but it works--surprisingly well. To the point that the reader finds himself or herself wondering what Hamish thinks of this or that turn of events, even when Hamish is silent.

This is the first of Charles Todd's Rutledge mysteries that I read--and then I went on to the first in the series: Test of Wills. I enjoyed reading them in this way, and in fact was hooked. (And then went on to the others). But the reader may want to read them in order. Test of Wills, Wings of Fire, Search the Dark, Legacy of the Dead, Watchers of Time, A Fearsome Doubt, A Cold Treachery, A Long Shadow. There is also a stand-alone Todd mystery called Murder Stone. Todd intertwines the supporting characters from book to book, so that Rutledge's and Hamish's friends and family appear in more than one book, at some times, mentioned and other times, key to the story.

This book, about a missing boy and his murdered family in a lonely spot between the Lake District and the Dales, is well worth your time and attention.

I love them, and they piss me off!

I enjoyed the environs and backstory of Rutledge and the haunting Hamish, so I recommend reading the series from the beginning. I typically rush right out to get each new book. However, while the failure of Rutledge's compelling romances usually irk me, this one really pissed me off! However, the mysteries catch my interest and Rutledge has my loyalty even if his life keeps teetering on the edge of disaster, so I will keep on reading the series.

It's hard to understand how Todd and his mother can write so convincingly about England in 1917. What a great series. Well drawn characters, suspense until the end, and a good plot. Talented writers who work well together. I am so glad to have been introduced to a series I would never have found on my own when a patient gave me the first one. Highly recommended.

Overrated

Terminal isn't a bad novel, as a matter in fact it's one of Keene's better books. It starts off great with the characters having realistic motivations for their actions and actually seem realistic. Terminal however begins to fail about half way through, first when they go to buy the guns it just feels stereotypical (and it's obvious Keene didn't look into firearm prices before writing this section).
Then it falls apart about ten pages into the bank robbery. I felt that Keene's reason for the robbery going bad was terrible and if you read the book you probably will too, the next part where the novel fails is the cast of characters in the bank who I just felt were too diverse. Then rather than try to keep the realistic feel that had been present throughout the first half of the novel Keene adds supernatural elements to the plot and it just doesn't feel like the same book after that. The ending is good, but it's the only good part of the second half of the book.
I give this three stars, two for a great first half and one for a terrific ending.

Interesting premise gets into a lot of navel gazing, finally gets moving, takes a twist, finishes with another and still doesn't satisfy. Could be a good movie with a strong screenplay. Worth a look.

Honest fiction....finally.

Brian Keene's TERMINAL is a unique piece of horror/thriller fiction..IT COULD BE REAL....and I beleive most of it to have happened. Powerful is a great description. Mr. Keene shows us the dark human heart...and can relate with what the author shows us...because it is real.

No purple prose..no zombies...no vampires...no witches.

Just pure honest dreading-the-next-page-but-I-have-to-read-it writing.

Brilliant.

Prologue

The taste of defeat was bitter, the more so for being both unknown and unexpected. The might of the Horde he had raised was broken against the stones of the Lozin Gate, the creature he had lifted up to lead it slain by a near-beardless youth, the creature he had sent to slay that youth himself destroyed. He could not understand it, for his master had promised victory and the promise of the god Ashar was as sure as the fires of his birthing; yet it had come: the Kingdoms stood intact.

In bitterness he retreated into the forests, leaving the barbarians to their own devices, to sue for peace or flee, he no longer cared: the promises he had made them in the name of his master meant nothing, for they had failed him. And yet, even in the chagrin of his rout, he saw that a purpose still remained–the youth, the one called Kedryn Caitin, must be destroyed. He did not properly understand the significance of the young man, knowing only that Kedryn had somehow stood against the ensorcelled sword of Niloc Yarrum, had somehow escaped the berserk fury of Borsus, thus confirming the instinctive suspicion that he was, in some inexplicable way, a greater obstacle than all the armies mustered in defense of the Kingdoms. While he still lived Ashar's purpose must stand in threat of thwarting, and while that menace should exist so must his own existence stand in danger. He must find a way to bring about his master's design.

He moved steadily deeper into the woodlands, traversing paths untrod by man, moving with a speed greater than human form might attain, the beasts of the forest scattering from his way as they would scatter from the encroaching breath of fire, sensing in him that which he was able to hide from man. Deeper and ever deeper he moved, until he came to that place where first he had known this life given him by his master, where Ashar's fires had first burned in the Beltrevan.

It was a silent, sere place devoid of birdsong or animal life. The trees were not grown back where his birthing fire had scorched the ground, nor any undergrowth. Rather, it was a place that denied natural life, the earth still hidden beneath a thick layering of ash undisturbed by spoor or seeding, nubs of flame-scorched timber like rotted tooth stumps, the rock itself glass-smooth as cooled magma.

Ashar was here. He could feel the presence of the god, and he felt a chill touch of dread.

He shed the furs that had hid his frame from human sight and stood in unhuman nakedness, knowing what he must do yet fearing the wrath of his master, that fear stoking the hate he felt for Kedryn Caitin and the folk of the Kingdoms and the blue-robed followers of Ashar's enemy. He nursed the hate, letting it kindle until it burned fiercer than the dread, and then his thin lips began to move, forming words impossible for human tongue to utter. He stretched out his arms, blue flame flickering about his taloned fingers, sparking and crackling, filling the stifled air with the sharp tang of ozone. The droning of his chant grew louder, and as it did the cold fire formed in his mouth, wreathing about his mantis-features as his cratered eyes blazed red as smoldering coals. Louder and higher he chanted until the silence of the burned woodland was filled with the sound, his arms raised high, his head craned back, his frame rigid. Then, abruptly, he dropped his arms, screaming a single word: "Ashar!"

The blue fire spurted from mouth and fingertips, converging, striking ground that exploded into flame, a great column of incandescence blazing red against a darkening sky, tongues of fire filling the blackened clearing, washing over him so that he shuddered with the ecstasy of the heat. Up and up rose the column until it seemed to link earth and heavens, seemed to burn down into the earth, a corridor to the netherworld from which he summoned his master.

And Ashar came, the knowledge of the god's presence sending him to his knees, head bowed lest he gaze upon that which even he feared to observe directly.

"You have failed me."

The words were thunder and lightning that blasted the surrounding pines, setting them to swaying, flame dancing over their limbs.

He groveled, prostrating himself, his mouth against the ash, his answer–his plea–spoken into the cinders.

"I did my best. I did as you bade me."

"You say the fault is mine?"

"No, Master! Never yours; but . . ."

"Excuses! Do you plead for your miserable existence? That which I have given, I can take away."

"I plead to continue your work, Master! Only that. I know these creatures better now. I know that Kyrie stands with them."

"Kyrie!" The trees growing about the great blackened patch of forest burst into flame as the central column gouted outward, fire roaring until it seemed all the Beltrevan must blaze. "You affront me with that cursed name!"

"Her power is great there." He spoke quickly, spitting ash and hatred with each word, momentarily aware that the burning that was his god could so easily reach out to take him. "And one there is who stands in our way–Kedryn Caitin. He withstood the magic of the sword and I believe he is favored of her."

"Kedryn Caitin." The thunder rumbled a fraction softer, almost ruminative. "You killed him?"

"I tried, Master, but I could not. There is power in him; enough that three times he escaped me. He lives still."

"He should not," roared the god, "and as he does, why should I not destroy you?"

"I can serve you still, Master." His clawed hands dug into the ashy soil, his malformed shape tensing in anticipation of dreadful anger. "I know them better now and if you send me amongst them again I believe I may achieve your will–so long as I destroy this one."

"What is he?" demanded Ashar, the fulguration of his voice lessened. "A priest? Does she take men under her skirts now?"

"A warrior. A youth. A princeling of Tamur, I believe; not a priest–she still calls women to her service. But she affords him her protection. He it was thwarted our purpose."

"Then he must be destroyed!" Lightning stalked the ground about the prostate figure. "This time you must not fail me."

He drew deep, ashy breath as he recognized clemency and promised, "No, Master. This time I shall not fail you."

"You have thought on this? You have a design?"

"I have. I must go amongst them. Not the forest folk this time, but the people of the Kingdoms. Where might has failed us, subtlety may prevail. I shall seek to destroy from within, not overwhelm with sword might but seduce."

"How so?" Ashar demanded, the question a rolling peal of thunder.

"There are three kingdoms, Master," came the answer, "and a lord to each. A king above them in the city they call Andurel; elected. Men are ambitious and lords lust for kingship. Should their king die . . ."

"An ambitious man might be bent to my will."

"Aye, Master. And were that man made king the youth Kedryn must obey his commands and thus fall into my hands."

"If they know you, you are lost. I cannot protect you where that bitch holds sway."

"I shall guise myself," he promised, a little more confident now. "They will not know me until it is too late. I shall bring down Kedryn Caitin and all the blue-robed whores. I swear it."

Thunder rumbled and lightning flashed from the incandescent core of the fire, then Ashar said, "Go, Taws, and fulfill that promise. Give me the Kingdoms."

He sensed the departure of the god, not daring to raise his head until the last rumblings of the thunder had long died, and then cautiously, his deep-set eyes hooded, furtive as he peered about. Flame still candled where he had created it, but now only as a fireball, no longer that column reaching into the nowhere of the otherworld. He rose, more confident now, and stalked to the center of that flame, basking in it, renewing his strength and his hope in the aftermath of Ashar's presence.

Through the final waning of the light and all the hours of darkness he remained there, until the sun rose again, shedding brightness over the looming shadows of the deep timber. Then he gestured and the flame died. He clad himself again in the furs that hid his frame and went once more from that place, about Ashar's business.

In time, as he moved steadily southward toward the Kingdoms, he encountered barbarians, scattered groups mostly, the first to flee the scene of battle, their bearded features sullen in defeat. He avoided them, unsure of the reception he might receive and unwilling to expend energy on defense, knowing that he would need all his strength for what lay ahead. Only when he had come close to the pass through the Lozins where the two forts stood did he reveal himself.

There was a solitary Caroc separated, he presumed, by dint of wounds from his tribesmen. The warrior limped, leaning heavily on the shaft of his broken spear, stained bandages about one leg, his beard blood-crusted from a savage cut across his cheek. Shield and ax were slung on his back and in his eyes was the disillusion of a belief gone down in ruin. Taws stepped from the shelter of the trees to confront him and the tribesman mouthed a curse, shaping his left hand in the three-fingered gesture of warding even as he leveled the broken spear.

"You know me," Taws said, his voice soft as a serpent's hiss.

"Taws the sorcerer!" The Caroc spat the words like a curse. "Taws the betrayer! Where did you run, mage? Where were you when the hef-Ulan fell? When Balandir died? Where are your promises now, mage?"

Chapter One

Trixie Snelling seemed to be working up to something over lunch this particular Tuesday, and really just killing time talking about scouring costume stores to find forehead ridges to please a client who liked to be dominated by a Klingon, but she never got to it because I had to take a call on my cell that my father had been eaten by a bear.

"There were those two Klingon chicks in the series where the bald guy was the captain, right?" Trixie asked me, because she knew that I was something of an authority when it came to matters related to science fiction.

"Yeah," I said. "Lursa and B'Etor Duras. They were sisters. They tried to overthrow the Gowron leadership of the Klingon High Council." I paused, then added, "Lots of leather and cleavage."

"I'm okay there," Trixie said, shaking her head at the useless information I had stored in my head. I wondered sometimes what important stuff gets crowded out when your brain is filled with trivia.

"My closet's so full of leather," Trixie continued, "I'm afraid it's all going to congeal back into a cow. I should show you sometime." Even though Trixie was dressed, at the moment, in a dark blue pullover sweater and fashionable jeans over high-heeled boots, it wasn't difficult to imagine her in full dominatrix regalia. I had seen her that way once—and not as a client—back in the days when we were neighbors. We'd kept in touch after Sarah and I and the kids had moved away, and even though we were just friends, and met regularly for lunch or a coffee, I never quite got over the novelty of what she did for a living.

She continued, "But getting these ridges onto my forehead, making them blend in with the rest of my head, then there's the makeup that makes me look like I've fallen asleep at the tanning salon, I mean, getting ready for this guy is a major production. Where are the guys who just want to be whipped by the girl next door? Plus, he wants me to torment him without wrinkling his Starfleet uniform."

"He wears a Starfleet uniform," I said. "What rank is he?"

"Captain," Trixie said. "There's these little gold dots on his collar that supposedly denote rank, but he just tells me to call him Captain, so that's fine. He's paying for it. I'm just glad he doesn't want me to call him Rear Admiral. Imagine what that might entail."

"I imagine that you are well compensated for your efforts."

Trixie gave me a half smile. "Absolutely." The smile disappeared as quickly as it had appeared. Trixie picked at her spinach salad as I twirled some fettuccine carbonara onto my fork.

"What's on your mind?" I asked.

She shook her head. "Nothing." She picked at her salad some more. "What's going on with you? Things working out with Sarah as your boss?"

I shrugged, then nodded. I'd been working as a feature writer at The Metropolitan for more than a year now, having accepted the fact that I could not make a go of it staying home and writing science fiction novels. I'd been assigned to Sarah, whose responsibilities at the city desk included overseeing a number of feature writers, some neurotic, some egotistical, some neurotically egotistical, and then there was me, her obsessive, often pain-in-the-ass, husband.

"Oh sure," I said. "I mean, she wants to kill me, but other than that, the relationship is working well." I had a bite of pasta. "I'm on the newsroom safety committee."

"There's a surprise," Trixie said.

"It's no joke. We've got air quality issues, radiation off the computer screens, there's—"

"Let me see if I understand this. You work for a major daily newspaper, where they send reporters off to Iraq and Iran and Afghanistan and God knows where else, and they expose murderous biker gangs and do first-person stories about what it's like to be a skyscraper window washer, and you're worried about air quality and computer radiation?"

"You make it sound kind of weenie-like," I said.

Again, Trixie gave me the half smile. "Sarah okay with you and me being friends?"

I nodded. "I were you, I'd be more worried about my own reputation, hanging out with a writer for The Metropolitan."

"And how was your trip? Didn't you guys go someplace?"

"That was months ago," I said. "A little trip to Rio."

"Good time?"

I shrugged. "I found it a bit stressful." I paused, then added, "I'm not a good traveler."

"How's Angie?" Trixie asked. My daughter was nineteen now, in her second year at Mackenzie University.

"Good," I said. "Paul's good, too. He's seventeen now, finishing up high school."

"They're good kids." Trixie's eyes seemed to mist when she said it, and then she seemed to be looking off to one side, at nothing in particular.

"I keep getting this vibe that there's something on your mind," I said. "Talk to me."

Trixie said nothing, breathed in slowly through her nose. If she needed time to work up to something, I could wait.

"Well," she said, "you know the local paper in Oakwood? The Suburban? There's this—"

And then the cell phone inside my jacket began to ring.

"Hang on," I said to Trixie. I got out the phone, flipped it open, put it to my ear. "Yeah?"

"Zack?"

"Hi, Sarah."

"Where are you?"

"I'm having lunch with Trixie. Remember I said?"

"So you're not driving or anything?"

"No. I'm sitting down." My mind flashed to Paul and Angie. When you have teenagers, and someone's about to give you some sort of bad news, you know it's probably going to be about them. "Has something happened with the kids?" I asked.

"No no," Sarah said quickly. "Kids are fine, far as I know."

I let out a breath.

"So anyway," Sarah said, "there's this stringer I use sometimes, Tracy McAvoy? Up in the Fifty Lakes District? She does the odd feature, breaking news when it happens up there and we can't get a staffer there fast enough. Remember she did the piece about that seaplane crash, the hunters that died, last year?"

I didn't, but I said, "Sure." However, I could recall seeing the byline, occasionally, in the paper. Fifty Lakes is about a ninety-minute drive north of the city, lots of lakes (well, about fifty) and hills, cabins and boating and fishing, that kind of thing. A lot of city people had cottages up there. My father, for one.

"I just got off the phone with her," Sarah said. "She's got this story about a possible bear attack. Pretty vicious."

I could guess where this was going. Tracy was an okay reporter, she could file a basic story, but the city desk was wanting something more, some color, maybe a piece for the weekend paper. The sort of thing I was born to do. "Sarah, just get to it."

"Would you shut up and listen? It was in Braynor, well, in the woods outside Braynor."

"Yeah, okay. Braynor's where my dad's camp is."

"I know. Well, here's the thing. They found this body, this man, and I guess there wasn't a whole lot of him left to identify, and they found him right by Crystal Lake."

That was the lake where Dad ran his fishing camp. A handful of cabins, rental boats. I mentioned that to Sarah.

"I know, Zack. That's where they found the body. In the woods by your father's place."

"Jesus," I said. "I guess I should give him a call." I paused. "I can't even remember the last time I talked to him. It's been a while."

"Here's the thing," Sarah said, hesitating. "Nobody's seen your dad for a while. And they haven't identified this body yet."

A chill ran through me.

"I phoned your dad's place," Sarah added. "But there wasn't any answer."

I slipped the phone back into my jacket and said apologetically to Trixie, "Hold that thought. Something's sort of come up."

Chapter Two

My parents would take me and my older sister Cindy up to Fifty Lakes when we were kids. I guess we went up there two or three summers in a row, when Dad took a week off from his job at the accounting firm. There was a camp that rented out spots to people with travel trailers—Airstreams and the like—before everyone started going to Winnebago-style RVs that you didn't tow but drove.

We didn't have anything as upscale as an Airstream. Dad had gotten a deal, from someone he worked with at the accounting firm, on a tent trailer, which looked like a flattened box while en route, hitched to the back of the car. When you reached your destination, the contraption opened up with a canvas top, high enough to stand in, a big bed at each end, and a little sink with running water. Cindy and I weren't in our teens yet back then, so our parents had us sleep together on one side, while they took the other. I'd spend most of the night lightly running my finger along Cindy's neck so she'd think her sleeping bag was infested with spiders, and when she'd awake at midnight, screaming, I'd pretend to have been roused from a deep sleep just like my parents, who'd shout at her to be quiet, sometimes waking other campers in nearby spots. The hard part then was trying to roll over and not pee myself laughing.

That was probably the most fun thing about camping. The swimming and the fishing, those things were okay. But Dad spent so much time enforcing rules of behavior to keep us from hurting ourselves, or any of our secondhand camping equipment, that the appeal of vacationing was limited. Zip up the door fast so the bugs don't get in. Don't lean on the canvas or you'll rip it. Don't run on the dock with wet feet. Put on your life jacket. So what if the boat's still tied to the dock and the water's only two feet deep, put on your life jacket. Watch those fishhooks, for crying out loud, you get one of those in your finger and you'll get an infection and be dead before dinner.

He was something of a worrier, Arlen Walker was, and I'll understand if you find that amusing. His perpetual state of anxiety was as much of an annoyance for his wife and my mother, Evelyn Walker, as my conviction in the certainty of worst-case scenarios has been for my long-suffering Sarah.

"For God's sake, Arlen," Evelyn would say, "loosen your gas cap a bit and let the pressure off."

While family trips seemed to be sources of great anxiety for Dad, he still enjoyed his time in Fifty Lakes, away from the city, away from work. There were rare glimpses of something approaching contentment in this man who seemed unable to relax. I remember seeing him once, his butt perched on a rock at the water's edge, his bare feet planted on the lake bottom, water lapping up over his ankles. His shoes, a balled sock tucked neatly into each one, rested perfectly side by side on a nearby dock.

I approached, wondering whether I could get a couple of quarters out of him so Cindy and I could buy candy bars at the camp snack bar, and instead of reprimanding me for some misdeed of which I was not yet aware, he reached out a hand and tussled the hair on top of my head.

"Someday," he said, smiling at me and then looking out over the small lake.

And that was it.

"Someday" came eight years ago. Mom had been dead for four years at the time, and Dad decided the time had come to make a change. He retired from the accounting firm, sold the mortgage-free house in the city my sister and I had grown up in, and bought a twenty-acre parcel of land up in the Fifty Lakes District, south of the village of Braynor, that had two hundred feet of frontage on Crystal Lake.

He hadn't just bought a getaway property. He'd bought a small business, called Denny's Cabins (named for the man who'd originally built them back in the sixties). There were five rustic cottages, a few docks, and half a dozen small aluminum fishing boats with low-powered outboard motors bolted to the back. There was always one available for Dad to go fishing whenever he felt the urge, which actually wasn't all that often. He liked the tranquility of living at a fishing camp, even if he didn't drop his line into the water every day.

I'd only been up there a couple of times, the first soon after he bought it, to see what he'd gotten himself into. There was a two-story farmhouse and barn on the property, a couple of hundred yards up from the lake, but Dad had chosen not to live in it, preferring instead to take the largest of the five cabins, fully winterize it and spruce it up with new furniture and flooring and appliances, and live year-round at the water's edge, even in winter, when the lake froze over and the winds howled and the only people you were likely to see were lost snowmobilers and the guy who plowed the lane that wound its way in from the main road. Living in the farmhouse, with all that room to roam around in, would have been a constant reminder to Dad of how alone he was.

The second time I went up, a year or so later, I took Paul. He was eleven, and I'd had this notion that a father-son fishing trip would be the ultimate bonding experience, which it was not, because children who have grown up accustomed to blasting space aliens on a TV screen are ill equipped to sit in a boat for five hours waiting for something to happen. Anyway, I had phoned Dad and asked about renting a cabin for a weekend, not knowing that he'd berate me for two solid days about not getting our Camry rust-proofed.

"You might as well take a power drill to it now, get it over with," he told me. "Honestly, you spend that money on a car and don't get it rust-proofed, it's beyond me."

"Dad, the new cars already have perforation warranties."

"Oh yeah, right, like they honor those things."

We talked on the phone now and then, but not much. He'd actually bought himself a computer and occasionally I'd get an e-mail message from him, usually just a line or two to explain an attached photograph of some big muskie or pickerel he'd caught. For an old guy who was resistant to change, he'd embraced some of the new technologies with enthusiasm. I think it must have been those long, cold winters that brought him around. He was tired of being isolated, and his computer connected him to the world in ways he'd never imagined possible.

The Book was very enjoyable. In its own way, it reminds me Harlan Coben's books. The only disappointment was that it sooo long in delivery process to receive it - 3-4 + weeks.

An engaging and compelling mystery

LONE WOLF is the third of Linwood Barclay's Zack Walker novels, a series that with each new entry has become incrementally darker and exponentially better. It sets a high-water mark, not only for Barclay professionally but also for the mystery genre. Informed with a quiet excellence of execution, LONE WOLF is one of the best written mystery novels of 2006, no mean feat in a year marked by the blessing of a plurality of wondrous, well-crafted works.

Zack Walker, Barclay's Everyman protagonist, is a reporter, a well-intended worrywart whose heroism is confined primarily to doing the right thing for his family at all times, as it should be. While this admirable quality is hardly the stuff of adventurous derring-do, it causes Walker to function, more often than not, as a foible for or an observer of the dangerous and the intriguing while remaining a fish out of water with respect to the proceedings. Indeed, as Sarah, Walker's long-suffering wife, reminds him near the end of LONE WOLF, "This isn't our life." Just so; this quality makes Walker an identifiable character with the great majority of the readership, even as he stumbles into mysteries and dangers both great and small.

LONE WOLF begins with Walker receiving the bad news that his father, the owner and year-long resident of a fishing camp, may have been eaten by a bear. Walker, with understanding trepidation, leaves for the site, feeling somewhat remorseful about his relationship with his father while dreading what he will find upon his arrival at journey's end. However, Walker discovers that there is much more, and less, going on at the camp than he had anticipated. When a second body is discovered, and a supply of fertilizer is stolen, it becomes apparent that the quiet, heretofore idyllic, setting of the fishing camp is about to be changed forever.

Walker erroneously appears to be a somewhat limited character who would require an improbable jump of the shark to keep things interesting. But in the course of three novels Barclay has managed to invoke a subtle change of background in each --- from urban to suburban to, in LONE WOLF, a rural setting that is extremely true to life. The backdrop and circumstances permit Walker to find out some things about his father, and about himself. They haven't been close, in part because they are so much alike. As Walker begins, with some reluctance, to investigate the circumstances surrounding the mysterious goings-on around the camp, once again he turns to Lawrence Jones, his quietly capable and engaging friend, for assistance --- and as LONE WOLF speeds toward its cataclysmic conclusion, Walker finds that he will need all the help he can get.

LONE WOLF has it all --- three mysteries for the price of one; engaging, believable characters; a compelling story; and an excerpt from STONE RAIN, the next Zack Walker novel. If this advance preview is any indication, 2007 will be an even better year for Barclay than 2006. For now, however, LONE WOLF gives us much to enjoy. Highly recommended.
