Tatooine Ghost

Chapter 1

Instead of bed, where she usually awoke from her dreams, Leia found herself slumped forward in her crash webbing, ears hissing with static and eyes aching from the glare of two G-class suns. Han and Chewbacca were still busy at their stations, Han plotting approach vectors and Chewbacca setting sensor filters. The planet Tatooine was just drifting into view, its yellow sodium-rich sands glowing so brightly it resembled a small sibling star in orbit around the big twins.

A metallic hand tapped Leia’s shoulder. She turned to see C-3PO’s photoreceptors shining at her from the adjacent passen- ger seat.

“Pardon me for asking, Princess Leia, but are you well?”

“Don’t I look well?”

“Oh dear,” C-3PO replied, a diplomatic subroutine activating in response to her tone of voice. “Why yes, you do look as splendid as ever, but it seemed for a moment as though you might have overloaded your primary circuits.”

“My circuits are fine.”

“I’ll need to confirm that later.” Han twisted around and glanced over his seat with the same crooked smile that had alternately charmed and worried Leia since their first meeting on the Death Star. “Princess.”

“Oh, really?” Leia straightened herself in her chair without fully realizing she was doing it. With his tough-guy good looks and eyes sparkling with trouble, Han still made her sit up and take notice. “And you think you can read my schematics?”

“Sweetheart, I know your schematics by heart.” Han’s smile faded, and his expression grew concerned. “Threepio’s right. You look like you’ve seen a ghost.”

“Something like that. A bad dream.”

Han looked doubtful. “I’ve sat in that chair. That chair isn’t comfortable enough for dreams–good or bad.”

“It’s been a long trip,” Leia said, perhaps a little too quickly. “I must have nodded off.”

Han regarded her a moment longer, then shrugged. “Well, see if you can stay awake.” He looked forward again, to where the twin suns were slowly being eclipsed by Tatooine’s steadily swelling disk. “Until the sensors come up, we need to keep an eye out for other traffic.”

Leia gazed out the canopy and began to search for the rapidly swelling silhouette of blocked starlight that would mean an approaching vessel. Her thoughts remained focused on the strange dream. It had a similar feel to the Force-vision she had experienced nearly five years earlier at Bakura, when her father had sent an apparition begging for the forgiveness she would never–could never–grant. But that had been his doing, not hers.

Han’s hand rose into view between the pilot and copilot’s seats, pointing toward a blocky silhouette floating some distance to one side of Tatooine’s yellow disk. The twin suns were now completely hidden behind the planet, and Leia could see that the tiny silhouette was growing larger as they approached. It seemed to be staying in the same place relative to Tatooine, deliberately hanging in the shadow of the planet.

“That’s too square to be a moon,” Han said.

“And it’s no asteroid, not hanging in one place like that,” Leia added. “But at least it doesn’t seem to be coming our way.”

“Yet,” Han replied. “How about those filters, Chewie?”

An impatient rumble suggested that the Wookiee was still struggling with the filters. Anyone else might have been frightened, but Leia found the groan reassuring, a touch of the familiar in a time of shifting alliances and random annihilation. When she had married Han six months ago, she had known Chewbacca would be an honorary member of their family, and that was fine with her. Over the years she had come to think of the Wookiee as something of a furry big brother, always loyal to Han and protective of her, and now she could not hear him growl without feeling that she lived in a safer place, that with Chewbacca and Luke and Han–when he was in the mood–and millions of others like them, the New Republic would beat back the Empire’s latest onslaught and one day bring peace to the galaxy.

That, and she liked how Wookiee fur always smelled of tril- lium soap.

The comm hiss finally fell silent as Chewbacca found the right combination of filters. He brought the sensors up, fiddled a moment longer, then let out a startled ruumph.

“The mass calibration is off,” Han said. “That reads like a Star Destroyer.”

Chewbacca oowralled indignantly, then sent the data read- out to the auxiliary display beside Leia’s seat and glanced back for her affirmation. She had to look only a second to see that he was correct.

“Sixteen hundred meters, six comm bands in use, and a TIE squadron circling on station,” Leia said, feeling a little sick and worried. When the Millennium Falcon came across a Star Destroyer these days, it was usually because one was stalking the other. “I don’t know, Han. The mass calibration looks fine to me.”

As she spoke, the Falcon’s computer found a profile match in its military data banks and displayed the schematic of an Imperial-class Star Destroyer. Below the image appeared the vessel’s name.

“The Chimaera,” Han read. “Isn’t she still in service to the Empire?”

“As of two months ago, she was one of their most efficient Destroyers.” Leia did not need to look up the information. The death of Warlord Zsinj eight months earlier had emboldened the Imperial fleet, and the Provisional Council had been mired in war minutiae ever since. “Admiral Ackbar has been wondering what became of her.”

“Deserters?” Han caught her eye in the canopy reflection. “Another captain wanting to set himself up as a warlord?”

“Please, no! The situation out here is already too confused.” With the New Republic battling the Imperials over the scraps of Zsinj’s empire and the surviving warlords exploiting the war to enlarge their own territories, confused was an understatement. Several times, the New Republic Navy had moved against one enemy to find itself engaging another, and sometimes two or three at once. “And the Chimaera’s commander isn’t the type. By all accounts, Gilad Pellaeon is both loyal and competent.”

“Then what’s he doing at Tatooine?” Han asked. “There isn’t a conflict zone within fifty systems of here.”

Chewbacca groaned the opinion that it was someone else’s job to analyze Imperial objectives, then began to plot hyperspace coordinates. Leia braced herself, more concerned with Han’s reaction than Chewbacca’s when she explained why they still had to risk a run planetside.

She was spared the necessity when Han scowled at the Wookiee’s flying fingers.

“Chewie! I can handle this, no problem.” Han looked vaguely insulted. “It’s only one little Star Destroyer.”

Chewbacca grunted doubtfully, then added a yawl about the folly of tempting fate for a piece of art.

“Killik Twilight means a lot to Leia,” Han said. “It hung in the palace on Alderaan.”

Chewbacca growled a long question that suggested they might be flying into a trap; the painting might not even be real.

“You can’t forge moss-paintings,” Leia answered. “Not anymore. They require strains that don’t spread or reproduce, the cultivation of which was a closely guarded secret even in Aldera. That secret died with the rest of Alderaan.”

“You see?” Han asked. “Besides, if the Imperials were trying to lure Leia to Tatooine, they wouldn’t leave their Star Destroyer out in the open like that.”

Han pointed at the tiny silhouette of the Chimaera, which had started an edgeward drift across the canopy as the Falcon eased past it toward the planet. Chewbacca stubbornly shook his head, reminding them of the syren plant on his native Kashyyyk, which drew victims to certain death with a scent so alluring it could not be resisted.

“Not a certain death,” Han corrected. “Or there wouldn’t be so many Wookiees in the galaxy.”

Never one whose purpose could be deflected by humor, Chewbacca reiterated the questions that had been troubling them all since learning of the auction. Why was such a valuable painting being sold in a seedy spaceport like Mos Espa? Where had it been all these years? Why was it surfacing now?

The answers were a mystery–as much a mystery as the Star Destroyer’s appearance here. At the time of Alderaan’s destruction, Killik Twilight had been returning home from a museum loan on Coruscant. It had dropped out of sight, and Leia had believed the painting destroyed with her home–at least until Lando Calrissian reported that it would soon be offered at auction on Tatooine.

Chewbacca continued to press his case, maintaining that the Chimaera’s presence was no coincidence. With an Imperial Star Destroyer hanging off Tatooine, there would almost certainly be Imperials at the auction. The argument was all too sensible, and–though Chewbacca clearly did not realize this–one that made it all the more imperative that Leia attend the sale herself. She leaned forward and grasped the Wookiee’s shoulder, and his tirade rumbled to an end.

“Chewie, everything you say makes sense. The Star Destroyer worries me, too. If this were just any piece of Alderaanian art, I wouldn’t ask you to take the risk. But for Killik Twilight, I must.”

Chewbacca studied her in the canopy...

Rebels and Romance

I loved this story! It was a great fun read focusing primarily on Leia and Han just after they had been married searching for a priceless piece of Alderaanian art that holds a cricial secret . I especially enjoy ed the focus on Leia dealing with the fact that Darth Vader is her father and what that means for her future family with Han.

Terrific book...what Han/Leia fans have been waiting for!

This is the first Expanded Universe book I have bought in something like seven years. I'm a die-hard Han/Leia fan and have disliked the way they have been wasted and mistreated in the EU over the years, particularly in the New Jedi Order books.
"Tatooine Ghost," set while Han and Leia are newlyweds, does the best job of portraying them as a couple and as individuals since...well, since the movies. Denning also skillfully weaves in threads from the prequels, and shows what has been ignored for the most part in the EU: Leia coming to terms with her heritage, particularly the fact that Anakin Skywalker is her father. Admittedly, Denning had the luxury of two prequels being out when he wrote this, so he had much more material to draw from than past EU authors, but he doesn't squander it. The parts about Shmi's diary could have been very contrived, but he makes it believable, and gives not just Leia but the reader a peek into Shmi's life. I like the prequels, but I've seen prequel-dislikers say that "Tatooine Ghost" helped them see the prequels, or at least some of the prequel characters, in a new light.
I could have done without the references to Thrawn (an overblown character that I truly despise), and the references to the Outbound Flight project seemed like nothing but a blatant commercial for Timothy Zahn's upcoming books. Also, it seemed a bit strange that literally everyone on Tatooine knew that Anakin had become Darth Vader. But the overall story, not to mention the Han/Leia interaction, is so good that I am willing to overlook the flaws. This is the type of book that the EU should have been all along, but wasn't. It is also a very nice break from the gloom, doom, and death of the New Jedi Order.

Chapter One

Do you, Jessica, take this man, Nicholas, to be your lawfully wedded husband . . ." Every woman wants her wedding day to be perfect, and so far mine had been exactly that.

The setting couldn't have been lovelier—a sprawling estate on Long Island's North Fork that had been the home of a prosperous sea captain back in the 1800s. These days, it was available for private events, which meant that today Nick and I had the charming three-story Victorian mansion, the expansive lawn, and the exquisite gardens all to ourselves.

The day couldn't have been more pleasant, either. The delightfully warm June sun shone down on my soon-to-be husband and me as we stood beneath a graceful wooden archway decorated with gauzy white fabric and colorful wildflowers. Behind us, more than a hundred friends and family members looked on. Off to the left was a large white tent set up for the wedding feast, complete with a three-tier cake.

And I was certainly dressed like the heroine in a story- book, the type that ends "and they lived happily ever after." My wedding dress was straight out of a fairy tale, made from flowing ivory silk and cut in a flattering empire style. One of my closest friends, Suzanne Fox, had applied my makeup in a way that made me look as if I were glowing. She'd also twisted my straight, dark blond hair into an elaborate updo, leaving a few loose strands to frame my face. The finishing touch was the cluster of white flowers she'd fastened to one side of my head.

As for the groom, he looked positively debonair, thanks to a well-cut tuxedo that made him look as if he were dashing off to the Academy Awards. And while I'd grown used to the lock of dark brown hair that was constantly falling into Nick's eyes, for this special occasion he'd apparently used some magic potion to tame it.

True, a few butterflies had been doing the hokey-pokey in my stomach before the ceremony. Yet everything was going exactly as planned until the moment I found myself standing in front of the judge.

I could feel the eyes of my guests boring into me as I clutched a bouquet of the same white flowers as my hair ornament. At the moment, I desperately hoped the profusion of petals hid the fact that my hands were trembling.

". . . For better or for worse, to love and to cherish . . ."

Not that I had any doubts about marrying Nick. Not at this point. He was the love of my life, and looking back over the years we'd been together, I realized that even though we'd had our share of ups and downs—or possibly more than our share—I'd never stopped feeling that he and I simply belonged together.

It was just that there was something so momentous about actually uttering those two words—I do. While I could picture myself being married to Nick, I was still having trouble getting over that one last hurdle . . .

"From this day forward," the judge intoned, "for as long as you both shall live . . . ?"

It was time. This was it. So I opened my mouth, prepared to say those life-changing syllables, when the peaceful scene was shattered by a piercing scream.

"A-a-a-ah!"

Instantly, everyone froze.

Nick turned to me, wearing a puzzled look. "Jess?" he asked questioningly.

It seemed he just assumed that the desperate cry for help had come from me.

"A-a-a-ah!" we all heard again, the horrible cry cutting through the warm June day like a bolt of lightning. "No! No!"

Maybe it's because as a veterinarian I'm used to handling emergencies, but before I had a chance to mentally form the phrase "ruining your own wedding," I whirled around, hiked up my long skirt, and raced back down the aisle. I was only vaguely aware of the chaos erupting around me as guests rose from their seats, glancing around with worried looks.

"It's coming from the house," I said to Nick.

The fact that he was right beside me, racing toward the house so speedily that his tux could have been made of Spandex, assured me that I?was doing the right thing. "It sounds like somewhere on the first floor," he said breathlessly.

Even though I was wearing heels, I managed to reach the front door just seconds after Nick. The two of us rushed inside, exchanging a look of concern over the unmistakable sound of gasps and sobs.

"The kitchen!" I cried, sprinting down the hall.

I wondered if I'd be able to move faster if I kicked off my silly Barbie shoes, especially since I was now dealing with polished hardwood floors instead of the back lawn's velvety-green grass. But I didn't want to waste any time. Instead, I skidded around the corner toward the kitchen doorway, not knowing what I'd find.

I certainly didn't expect it to be a man lying completely still on the tile floor with what looked like an extremely sharp knife sticking out of his chest. And from the pallor of his skin and the dullness of his eyes, he appeared to be dead.

My first thought was that he couldn't have been part of the catering staff, since he wasn't wearing black pants and a white shirt the way the food preparers and waiters were.

In fact, from the way he was dressed—a blue-and-white-striped seersucker suit, a lemon-yellow necktie, and white patent-leather loafers—I concluded that he had to be a guest. But he certainly wasn't anyone I'd told my future mother-in-law Dorothy to add to the list of invitees.

"Do you know who he is?" I asked Nick, my voice a near-whisper.

He shook his head. "I never saw this man before in my life."

It was only at that point that I realized someone else was in the room. A young woman was cowering a few feet away from Nick and me, the expression on her face one of complete shock. Her shiny black hair was pulled back into a neat ponytail and she was dressed like a penguin, leading me to the conclusion that unlike the man on the floor, she did work for the caterer.

I also assumed she was the screamer.

"What happened?" I asked her.

"I—I don't know!" she gasped. "I went downstairs to the wine cellar for about ten minutes. I guess I was the only person in the house, since it looks as if everybody else sneaked outside to watch the ceremony. We're not supposed to, but whenever it's time for the bride and groom to say 'I do' we can't help it. Anyway, when I came upstairs just now, this is what I found!"

She paused to take a deep breath before whispering, "Do you think he's dead?"

"It looks that way," I replied gently.

Her expression still stricken, she pulled a cellphone out of the pocket of the tailored black pants she wore under a crisp white apron emblazoned with the caterer's logo. As she punched in three numbers, she stepped away to a back corner of the kitchen. That left Nick and me with the unfortunate dead man.

"Who is he?" I asked, my head spinning as I tried to make sense out of what I was seeing. "From his clothes, he doesn't look as if he works for the caterer. Besides, if he did, the woman who found him would have recognized him. I don't think he's affiliated with the estate, either, since when I booked it someone would have mentioned that he'd—"

I stopped midsentence. I'd just become aware of the sharp clicking of high heels, the uneven rhythm making it sound as if they were worn by someone who wasn't used to teetering around on them.

Which meant my future mother-in-law had joined us.

"What's going on in here?" Dorothy Burby demanded. Distractedly, she smoothed the fabric of the ill-fitting blue-gray dress she'd chosen to wear on this lovely summer day on which her son was getting married. I was hoping she'd thought wearing such a drab dress was the embodiment of sophistication—even though part of me feared she was in mourning over her son's choice of a mate.

"For goodness' sake, Jessica," she added shrilly, "you can't just leave your guests sitting out there in the hot sun! This is supposed to be a wedding, so I don't understand why—"

She gasped, then slapped her hands against her cheeks.

"Good heavens!" she cried. "What happened to Cousin Nathaniel?"

"Cousin Nathaniel?" Nick and I repeated in unison.

"That's right." Dorothy fumbled inside the small rhinestone-studded clutch she was carrying and pulled out a pair of what I assumed were reading glasses. She planted them at the end of her nose, then leaned over the ill-fated man's body and peered closely at his face.

"That's Cousin Nathaniel, all right," she declared. Sighing loudly, she said, "I'm the one who invited him. I had to. He's family."

"You mean I'm related to this guy?" Nick asked, amazed.

"Of course," Dorothy sniffed. "He's Ruthie's son. You know, Gladys's sister's boy. But goodness, just look at poor Cousin Nathaniel now!"

From the confused look on Nick's face, I got the impression he didn't know any more about who Ruthie or Gladys were than he did about the man I was now thinking of as Poor Cousin Nathaniel.

"Who's Ruthie—and who's Gladys?" he asked, blinking.

"Ruthie was my first cousin—which makes Nathaniel my first cousin once removed," Dorothy replied, still staring at the dead man. "I never knew Ruthie all that well. I knew her sister, Gladys, a little better, since she was a lot closer to my age. Of course, both Ruthie and Gladys are gone now. In fact, Nathaniel's the only one left from that branch of the family."

A vague memory was surfacing from one of our endless phone conversations about the guest list: Dorothy mentioning that she felt obligated to invite some distant relative she hadn't seen in ages. At the time, I remembered thinking something trite like, "The more the merrier."

With a sigh, she added, "It's been so long since he's had any contact with our part of the family that I never really expected him to show up."

I bet he wishes he hadn't, I thought griml...

Perfect Cozy Read

With the miserable weather we've been having, this was the perfect book to have with a fire and a cup of hot tea. I love this series and look forward to the next installment. The characters come to life in a funny and imperfect way...like us. And to have an author with the love and treatment of animals that I do makes it the perfect cozy book for me!

fun thriller

Veterinarian Dr. Jessica Popper runs a mobile clinic Reigning Cats and Dogs that does house calls; saving the animals from having to go to an office. Commitment phobic Jessica has been engaged to Nick Burby for ages when she suddenly decides on a big wedding. After months of putting up with her future mother-in-law's demands, Nick and Jess are about to exchange vows when a scream from one of the catering servers halts the festivities.

Inside the reception hall is the body of cousin Nathanial Stibbins who is the black sheep on the groom's side. Nick's mom invited Nathanial as she thought that was the right thing to do. She demands that Jessica find her nephew's killer starting at the Worth School on Long Island. Jessica obtains a summer job there teaching students how to properly care for their pets while also subtly questioning staff and faculty about Nathanial. She learns he made plenty of enemies in his climb to the top; any of them would want him dead. Ignoring letters warning her to abort her investigation, Jessica finds evidence that points towards one suspect, but she has doubts as what was complex and convoluted abruptly became too simple and linear.

Putting aside the unlikely mother-in-law scenario, readers who adore cute animals in their mysteries will appreciate Murder Had a Little Lamb. This amateur sleuth is well constructed with many suspects possessing strong motives that lead the audience to understand how vicious and backstabbing Nathanial must have been as even his betrayed friend and his lover loathed him. The romantic subplot enhances the whodunit bringing warm depth to the intrepid heroine as part of an overall fun thriller.

A fun cozy.

Jessica Popper and longtime finance' Nick Burby are literally at the alter when there is a scream and the body of the "Black Sheep" cousin Nathaniel is found by a catering employee. Nick's mother demands that Jessie find the murderer and make all this humiliation go away. It isn't helpful that no one has actually seen cousin Nathaniel for years, and the only address anyone has is the exclusive private school where he was an art instructor. Jessie manages to get a volunteer position at the school for summer term teaching a class on taking care of your pets. As a mobile Vet, Jessie drives all over the island making house calls, so going to the school to teach doesn't disrupt her routine too much. However, as the suspect list grows, Jessie finds herself in danger not only physically but emotionally when she and Nick have problems. Jessie has to move fast to save her own life and her relationship with Nick. I really enjoyed this book.

Jean-Benoit Savard, the great-grandson of French settlers, slaves, and Choctaw and Seminole Indians, is the one man who knows the city well enough to engineer the miracle that will reunite the Bonners and send them home to Lake in the Clouds. With Ben Savard’s guidance, allies are drawn from every segment of New Orleans’s population and from Andrew Jackson’s army, now pouring into the city in preparation for what will be the last major battle of the War of 1812.

The action begins with the dramatic rescue of Jennet Scott from captivity in the French Antilles. Her saviors include her husband, Luke, a prominent Montreal merchant, and Luke's Mohawk half-sister, Hannah, a physician. Jennet had given birth to a son, Nathaniel, during her captivity and enlisted Honoré Poiterin, a shady Creole merchant, to smuggle him to safety. The Scotts trek to New Orleans after discovering Poiterin and his grandmother have taken the child there and are claiming him as their own. In a city surrounded by two opposing armies, the Scotts find an ally in Ben Savard, the well-connected half-brother of a plantation owner. Out of a surfeit of characters (there are over 30 "primary characters" listed at the book's beginning), Hannah is the star—surviving two brushes with death, saving countless lives and still finding time to fall in love. Queen of Swords

Queen of Swords is the fifth book of the Into the Wilderness series, where Sara Donati continues her historical fiction account of the Bonner family. Fans of the series will not be disappointed. However, you do not have to read the first four novels to get the most from this sequel. It is fresh with new setting and new characters and the author brings up what is important to know for you to understand and enjoy the novel.

Luke and Hannah's search for their beloved Jennet, who has been abducted, takes them to New Orleans during the war of 1812. Through their adventure you will have your emotions stirred up by the situations created by war, racism, prejudice, dominating power and slavery.

The setting is so well described, that you can just close your eyes to picture it. The characters are good, convincing, strong and likable. The author is very skillful in keeping the story intriguing, suspenseful and interesting. Very well written and leaves space for readers to imagine the details.

It is a great book. I highly recommended it.

I love the new characters

I loooooooooooooooooooooooooved this book. It was a page turner from the first page. I love the new characters. I love the true telling of what the slaves really went through. However, the Jamaica train scene was a little too much for me and I had to put the book down for a couple of days. I love how Jennet and Luke and Hannah grow and mature and how they depend on each other more and more. Even though we do not get as much from Elizabeth and Nathaniel we still know what is going on in Lake in the Clouds from the letters home which I look forward to reading as if the letters were written to me. This book did not disappoint.

An Adventure From Start To Finish

Overall, I think I must admit, that I enjoyed this one a lot more than the last book, in the series. This one does have a different feel than previous books, as it focuses mainly on the characters of Luke, Hannah, and Jennet. I won't say anything more, except that the setting, both the tense political and military situation as well as the tense social climate of the times in New Orleans, leant itself well to the story, giving it an ever-present, often underlying, sense of urgency. For me this one was truly an adventure from start to finish, and an excellent addition in the series.

The reader knows as much as the police do, and the writer accurately describes investigative techniques and legal process. As a former deputy sheriff from Iowa, Harstad has the procedure down; his storytelling ability also sets him far ahead of other first-time novelists in this genre. Finding four people who appear to have been killed in satanic rituals whips a normally peaceful rural Iowa town into a frenzy. The reader follows the Nation County sheriff's department as it works with state detectives and city police to unearth information about the clandestine affairs of a satanic cult. Deputy Carl Houseman is the epitome of a police officer, and his humanity, intelligence, and ability place him at personal risk as the case races to a heartstopping climax. Cop Talk

I enjoyed the story and getting to know the main character, but there may have been too much 10-4ing for my taste. It was a police procedural but, because of its small-town Iowa setting, it was better than most procedurals, with the obvious exception of McBain's 87th Precincts.

Alot of potential but a weak ending

I'm not that familiar with police procedurals. I had never even heard of the genre until browsing on Amazon. I saw this book and decided to give it a try. I'm not sure where this book stands in comparison of other police procedurals but as far as a suspense story I was really pleased with the book all the way through until the very end. It's nearly impossible to explain without ruining the ending. The author seems to have run out of steam and just decided to end the whole thing in a few pages. There is one key event that he just completely takes back which makes for a happier ending but short changes the integrity of the story and cheats the reader. If you liked the movie "The Game" with Michael Douglas but hated the ending you'll feel the same way about this book.
The thing I did like was the author's style. The characters were likable and the dialog was fairly believable. The main character, Carl Houseman is funny at times and it's nice to read about a hero that's middle aged and balding. The supporting cast are all well thought out and there isn't a lot of the sterotypical characters you usually find in crime novels.
All in all I liked the book enough to buy his next. If you've read this and liked it I would recommend Dirty White Boys by Stephen Hunter, it's similar and has a more believable, satisfying ending.

A riveting page-turner with an authentic voice.

Having worked in a small rural sheriff's department, I can say that Harstad's narrative is right on target. I could easily imagine some of the very same personalities and political conflicts he describes. This book had me hooked from page one. Whenever I had to put it down to deal with real life, I couldn't stop thinking about it and being very impatient for some more reading time. A very fast-paced read.
I took this book with me to read while on vacation and had it finished in a day. I'm very much looking forward to reading Harstad's new novel.

This involved tale follows the Rebel victory over the Empire in George Lucas' 1983 Return of the Jedi. Bakura is an almost terrestrial planet at a far reach of the galaxy; as the novel begins, it's being invaded by the unpronounceable Ssi-ruuk, a race of--well, of lizards. The Ssi-ruuk enjoy "enteching" people. That's a process where the enslaved human's energies are electronically transferred into androids. It's an awful thing to happen to anybody, so Luke Skywalker--after Ben Kenobi counsels him from the shadow-world--heads up his battle-weary force for a showdown. Meanwhile, on the surface of Bakura, there's a political wrangle going on, and in all of that Luke sort of falls for the aura of Senator Gaeriel Captison, but not, quite, for the senator herself. When's that boy going to settle down? Han Solo, Princess Leia, and various lovable robots are here, too, in small doses; mostly, this is Luke's book. The Force is with him, of course. Sort of a mix of Edgar Rice Burroughs (without Burroughs' humor), Robert Heinlein (as in Starship Troopers, say, but Tyers, a point in her favor, isn't as gung ho), and a lot of New Age notions, hiding inside the Force. Tyers' novel doesn't rival anything in the Star Trek series, but prequels and sequels to Lucas' films are in the works, so fans will make off with this like bandits. John Mort

One of the first and best Star Wars books

Truce at Bakura is a riveting action packed tale of the days directly after Return of the Jedi. Luke injured by the Emperor during the final battle aboard the Death Star II, is receiving treatment for those life threatening electrical convulsions you see him go through, when he receives a visitation from the spirit of Obi-Wan Kenobi bidding him to go to Bakura which is in great danger. So Luke in command of a task force with diplomats Han and Leia in tow heads out to Bakura. It was interesting to see Luke Skywalker in command of a military force, something not seen in any of the other Star Wars books. At Bakura our heroes find Imperial forces about to be destroyed by soul sucking aliens. In the interests of the innocents enemies join force and the fun begins. The battles both on land and in space are well written and the story is great. Love, death, betrayel, everything a Star Wars reader could possibly want is here. Han's gloating over the defeat of the Empire at Endor in front of Bakura's Imperial governor is classic, Leia's confrontation with the spirit of Anakin Skywalker is an imporatant aspect to the story, while Luke's romantic feelings for a lovely Bakuran senator are a humanizing influence on a character to often viewed as above human emotions. Overall Truce at Bakura is a great read, well written and I highly recommend it.

Flat and slow, but still compelling

"The Truce at Bakura", while not the first book to be published in the Star Wars Expanded Universe (Timothy Zahn's "Heir to the Empire" has that honor), it is the first chronological story to take place after "Return of the Jedi". Literally hours after the final battle above the Endor moon, which rebellion forces are cleaning up the aftermath of the vicious and legendary space battle, and signal beacon sent from the fringe world of Bakura arrives in system seeking out the local imperial presence to request help in repelling and alien invasion. Luke, who is still physically and emotionally recovering from his battle with the Emperor and the death of his father, Darth Vader, and Han and Leia, who are also recovering from the battle while exploring their burgeoning new romance, are assigned the duty of taking a task force to Bakura to inform them that the Empire is now longer in power and to also provide whatever assistance they can in helping the Bakurans repel the alien invaders known as the Ssi-Ruuk.

After having read the original Timothy Zahn 'Thrawn' trilogy ("Heir to the Empire", "Dark Force Rising", and "Last Command"), reading "The Truce at Bakura" was a bit of a let down. There are some good moments and good characters to this book, but too often it gets bogged down in the internal politics of the planet (which is still run by an Imperial governor) and the too much time aboard the Ssi-Ruuk ships with the unpronounceable names of the aliens. One of the better characters introduced is Gariel Captison, a young, pretty, strong-willed politician who advocating Bakuran independence and is a potential love interest for Luke. The Ssi-Ruuk are also formidable characters, as fierce an alien race the New Republic will face until the deadly arrival of the Yuuzhan Vong 20 years later. In addition to territorial cravings, the Ssi-Ruuk also seek to enslave huge numbers of the Bakuran people to be used in a gruesome scientific process called 'entechment', which actually transfers the life energies of an individual from their flesh body into a droid controlled ship. These ships are thought to be much more efficient fighters, although the people trapped within them are suffering tremendously.

As with most of the Star Wars novels, "...Bakura" has its fair share of government intrigue and conspiracy, much of which is designed to thwart the efforts by the Republic to help save Bakura. As mentioned before, too much time is spent on the dealings of the government and that does slow the book down considerably. Yet, on the whole "The Truce at Bakura" is a good novel and provides some insight into characters, places, and events that will have a major impact on the Star Wars Universe in years to come.

Luke. You must go to Bakura. Need we read this book tho?

This is a review for both the Hard cover book and the audio Casette.
I read this 10 years ago, as the second book following the Zahn Trilogy. By comparison it was natural to feel disappointed. But over the years, listening to it several times on audio cassette it has grown on me. The question you are asking, with so many SW books to select from should you read this one? Yes.
Luke falls in love. The characters here appear in the Corellian Trilogy. Bakura and Biotechnology used by the Ssi Ruuk is revisited in the ill intentioned NJO series. Though it didn't seem to fit when I first read the book, the story here does fit nicely with the entire Expanded Universe.
On the timeline I have this one at year 4.5 ANH. The story takes place right after the battle at Endor in ROTJ. Ben appears and tells Luke to go to Bakura. Luke, at age 20 is in command and can only assemble a small force after the devastation of the battle they have just fought. Naturally the Falcon, Han, Leia and Chewy are available to assist.
The point of the plot is for the Rebels to help the Imperial garrison on Bakura defend against an invasion that is coming from the unknown regions. The invaders are Large Reptilian creatures that, when they speak sound like flutes playing. They use entechment to take the essence of sentient beings and place that essence inside their machines to run those machines.
This is a book I recommend reading if you are now deciding to read the stories written for the classic era which starts with the Han Solo trilogy and ends with the Zahn Duology and the Dark Horse comic Union. Fortunately, at this writing, Amazon.com had both new and used audio cassettes and paperbacks for sale.

Audio Casette. This is an abridged version that can be listened to in about 2 ½ hours. Anthony Heald is the reader and he is the best. I recommend all the Bantam Audio books for star wars. They do a great job presenting the books with music and sound effects.

Chapter One


MY BROTHER, ORRIN Sackett, was big enough to fight bears with a switch. Me, I was the skinny one, tall as Orrin, but no meat to my bones except around the shoulders and arms. Orrin could sing like an angel, or like a true Welshman which was better than any angel. Far away back and on three sides of the family, we were Welsh. Orrin was a strapping big man, but for such a big man he was surprising quick.

Folks said I was the quiet one, and in the high-up hills where we grew up as boys, folks fought shy of me come fighting time. Orrin was bigger than me, fit to wrassle a bull, but he lacked a streak of something I had.

Maybe you recall the Sackett-Higgins feud? Time I tell about, we Sacketts were just fresh out of Higginses.

Long Higgins, the mean one, was also the last one. He came hunting Sackett hide with an old squirrel rifle. It was Orrin he was hunting, being mighty brave because he knew Orrin wouldn't be packing anything in the way of sidearms at a wedding.

Orrin was doing no thinking about Higginses this day with Mary Tripp there to greet him and his mind set on marrying, so I figured it was my place to meet Long Higgins down there in the road. Just as I was fixing to call him to a stand, Preacher Myrick drove his rig between us, and by the time I got around it Long Higgins was standing spraddlelegged in the road with a bead on Orrin.

Folks started to scream and Long Higgins shot and Mary who saw him first pushed Orrin to save him. Only she fell off balance and fell right into the bullet intended for Orrin.

"Long!"

He turned sharp around, knowing my voice, and he had that rifle waist-high and aimed for me, his lips drawed down hard.

Long Higgins was a good hip shot with a rifle and he shot quick . . . maybe too quick.

That old hog-leg of mine went back into the holster and Long Higgins lay there in the dust and when I turned around, that walk up into the trees was the longest I ever did take except one I took a long time later.

Ollie Shaddock might have been down there and I knew if Ollie called I'd have to turn around, for Ollie was the Law in those mountains and away back somewheres we were kin.

When Ma saw me cutting up through the woods she knew something was cross-ways. Took me only a minute to tell her. She sat in that old rocker and looked me right in the eye while I told it. "Tye," she was almighty stern, "was Long Higgins looking at you when you fetched him?"

"Right in the eye."

"Take the dapple," Ma said, "he's the runningest horse on the mountain. You go west, and when you find a place with deep, rich soil and a mite of game in the hills, you get somebody to write a letter and we'll come down there, the boys an' me."

She looked around at the place, which was mighty rundown. Work as we would, and us Sacketts were workers, we still hadn't anything extra, and scarcely a poor living, so Ma had been talking up the west ever since Pa died.

Most of it she got from Pa, for he was a wandering and a knowing man, never to home long, but Ma loved him for all of that, and so did we younguns. He had a Welshman's tongue, Pa did, a tongue that could twist a fine sound from a word and he could bring a singing to your blood so you could just see that far land yonder, waiting for folks to come and crop it.

Those old blue eyes of Ma's were harder to face than was Long Higgins, and him with a gun to hand. "Tye, do you reckon you could kill Ollie?"

To nobody else would I have said it, but to Ma I told the truth. "I'd never want to, Ma, because we're kin but I could fetch him. I think maybe I can draw a gun faster and shoot straighter than anybody, anywhere."

She took the pipe from her lips. "Eighteen years now I've seen you growing up, Tyrel Sackett, and for twelve of them you've been drawing and shooting. Pa told me when you was fifteen that he'd never seen the like. Ride with the law, Tye, never against it." She drew the shawl tighter about her knees. "If the Lord wills we will meet again in the western lands."

The way I took led across the state line and south, then west. Ollie Shaddock would not follow beyond the line of the state, so I put Tennessee behind me before the hills had a shadow.

It was wild land through which the trail led, west out of Tennessee, into Arkansas, the Ozarks, and by lonely trails into Kansas. When I rode at last into the street at Baxter Springs folks figured me for one more mountain renegade coming to help keep tick-infected Texas cattle out of the country, but I was of no such mind.

It was eight miles to where the Texas men held their cattle, so there I rode, expecting no warm welcome for a stranger. Riding clear of the circling riders I rode up to the fire, the smell of grub turning my insides over. Two days I'd been without eating, with no money left, and too proud to ask for that for which I could not pay.

A short, square man with a square face and a mustache called out to me. "You there! On the gray! What do you want?"

"A job if one's to be had, and a meal if you've grub to spare. My name is Tyrel Sackett and I'm bound westward from Tennessee toward the Rockies, but if there's a job I'll ride straight up to it."

He looked me over, mighty sharp, and then he said, "Get down, man, and come to the fire. No man was ever turned from my fire without a meal inside him. I'm Belden."

When I'd tied Dapple I walked up to the fire, and there was a big, handsome man lying on the ground by the fire, a man with a golden beard like one of those Vikings Pa used to tell of. "Hell," he said agreeably, "it's a farmer!"

"What's wrong with farming?" I asked him. "You wouldn't have your belly full of beans right now if they'd not been farmed by somebody."

"We've had our troubles with farmers, Mr. Sackett," Belden said, "there's been shooting, the farmers killed a man for me."

"So," said a voice alongside, "so maybe we should kill a farmer."

He had an itch for trouble and his kind I'd met before. He was a medium-tall man with a low hanging shoulder on his gun side. His black brows met over his nose and his face was thin and narrow. If it was trouble he was hunting he was following the right trail to get it.

"Mister," I told him, "any time you think you can kill this farmer, you just have at it."

He looked across the fire at me, surprised I think, because he had expected fear. My clothes showed I was from the hills, a patched, old homespun shirt, jeans stuffed into clumsy boots. It was sure that I looked like nothing at all, only if a man looked at the pistol I wore he could see there'd been a sight of lead shot out of that barrel.

"That's enough, Carney!" Mr. Belden said sharply. "This man is a guest at our fire!"

The cook brought me a plate of grub and it smelled so good I didn't even look up until I'd emptied that plate and another, and swallowed three cups of hot black coffee. Up in the hills we like our coffee strong but this here would make bobwire grow on a man's chest in the place of hair.

The man with the golden beard watched me and he said to Mr. Belden, "Boss, you better hire this man. If he can work like he can eat, you've got yourself a hand."

"Question is," Carney broke in, "can he fight?"

It was mighty quiet around that fire when I put my plate aside and got up. "Mister, I didn't kill you before because when I left home I promised Ma I'd go careful with a gun, but you're a mighty tryin' man."

Carney had the itch, all right, and as he looked across the fire at me I knew that sooner or later I was going to have to kill this man.

"You promised Ma, did you?" he scoffed. "We'll see about that!" He brought his right foot forward about an inch and I durned near laughed at him, but then from behind me came a warm, rich voice and it spoke clear and plain. "Mister, you just back up an' set down. I ain't aimin' to let Tyrel hang up your hide right now, so you just set down an' cool off."

It was Orrin, and knowing Orrin I knew his rifle covered Carney.

"Thanks, Orrin. Ma made me promise to go careful."

"She told me . . . an' lucky for this gent."

He stepped down from the saddle, a fine, big, handsome man with shoulders wide enough for two strong men. He wore a belt gun, too, and I knew he could use it.

"Are you two brothers?" Belden asked.

"Brothers from the hills," Orrin said, "bound west for the new lands."

"You're hired," Mr. Belden said, "I like men who work together."

So that was how it began, but more had begun that day than any of us could guess, least of all the fine-looking man with the beard who was Tom Sunday, our foreman on the drive. From the moment he had spoken up all our lives were pointed down a trail together, but no man could read the sign.

From the first Orrin was a well-loved man. With that big, easy way of his, a wide smile, as well as courage and humor enough for three men, he was a man to ride the trail with. He did his share of the work and more, and at night around the fire he would sing or tell yarns. When he sang to the cows in that fine Welsh baritone of his, everybody listened.

Nobody paid me much mind. Right off they saw I could do my work and they let me do it. When Orrin told them I was the tough one of the two they just laughed. Only there was one or two of them who didn't laugh and of these one was Tom Sunday, the other Cap Rountree, a thin, wiry old man with a walrus mustache who looked to have ridden a lot of trails.

The third day out, Tom Sunday fetched up alongside me and asked, "Tye, what would you have done if Reed Carney had grabbed his gun?"

"Why, Mr. Sunday," I said, "I'd have killed him."

He glanced at me. "Yes, I expect you would have."

He swung off then, only turned in his saddle. "Call me Tom. I'm not much on long-handled names."
Have you seen those Kansas plains? Have you seen the grass stretch away from you to the horizon? Grass and nothing but grass except for flowers here and there and maybe the white of buffalo bones, but grass moving gentle under the long wind, moving like a restless sea with the hand of God upon it.

On the fifth day when I was riding point by myself, and well out from the herd a dozen men came riding out of a ravine, all bunched up. Right off I had a smell of trouble, so instead of waiting for them to come up, I rode right to meet them.

It was a mighty pleasant day and the air was balmy with summer. Overhead the sky was blue and only a mite of cloud drifting like a lost white buffalo over the plain of the sky.

When they were close I drew up and waited, my Spencer .56 cradled on my saddle, my right hand over the trigger guard.

They drew up, a dirty, rough-looking bunch—their leader mean enough to sour cream.

"We're cuttin' your herd," he was a mighty abrupt man, "we're cuttin' it now. You come through the settlements an' swept up a lot of our cattle, an' they've et our grass."

Well, I looked at him and I said, "I reckon not."

Sort of aimlesslike I'd switched that Spencer to cover his belt buckle, my right finger on the trigger.

"Look here, boy," he started in to bluster.

"Mister," I said, "this here Spencer ain't no boy, an' I'm just after makin' a bet with a fellow. He says one of those big belt buckles like you got would stop a bullet. Me, I figure a chunk of lead, .56 caliber, would drive that buckle right back into your belly. Mister, if you want to be a sport we can settle that bet."

He was white around the eyes, and if one of the others made a wrong move I was going to drop the bull of the herd and as many others as time would allow.

"Back," it was one of the men behind the leader, "I know this boy. This here is one of them Sacketts I been tellin' you about."

It was one of those no-account Aikens from Turkey Flat, who'd been run out of the mountains for hog stealing.

"Oh?" Back smiled, kind of sickly. "Had no idea you was friends. Boy," he said, "you folks just ride on through."

"Thanks. That there's just what we figured to do."

They turned tail around and rode off and a couple of minutes later hoofs drummed on the sod and here came Mr. Belden, Tom Sunday, Cap Rountree, and Reed Carney, all a-sweat an' expecting trouble. When they saw those herd cutters ride off they were mighty surprised.

"Tye," Mr. Belden asked, "what did those men want?"

"They figured to cut your herd."

"What happened?"

"They decided not to."

He looked at me, mighty sharp. Kneeing Dapple around I started back to the herd.

"Now what do you make of that?" I could hear Belden saying. "I'd have sworn that was Back Rand."

"It was," Rountree commented dryly, "but that there's quite a boy."

When Orrin asked me about it at the fire that night, I just said, "Aiken was there. From Turkey Flat."

Carney was listening. "Aiken who? Who's Aiken?"

"He's from the mountains," Orrin said, "he knows the kid."

Reed Carney said nothing more but a couple of times I noticed him sizing me up like he hadn't seen me before.

There would be trouble enough, but man is born to trouble, and it is best to meet it when it comes and not lose sleep until it does. Only there was more than trouble, for beyond the long grass plains were the mountains, the high and lonely mountains where someday I would ride, and where someday, the Good Lord willing, I would find a home.

How many trails? How much dust and loneliness? How long a time until then?

First and second Louis L'Amour books I read 40 odd years ago. It was good to read them again! Maybe I won't wait as long to read the third time through.
