Octogenarian Doolittle, with coauthor Glines ( The Doolittle Raid , LJ 10/15/88) uncovers no scandals and reveals no skeletons in telling the story of his life. What emerges is a portrait of a thoroughly decent human being whose relative unconcern for his military reputation is especially refreshing in this genre. Doolittle's proudest memories come not from his years in high command but from the cockpit. A brilliant pilot and a trained aeronautical engineer, he contributed significantly to the development of American aviation prior to 1941. Doolittle clearly regards the high point of his wartime service as preparing and leading the 1942 raid against Tokyo. Otherwise he presents himself as a man who had the good fortune consistently to be in the right places at the right times. Doolittle's account underplays his own energy and ambition, qualities without which no one reaches senior rank in the armed forces. Nevertheless, his modesty, his pride of craft, and his sense of duty are admirable.

The reminiscences of an authentic American hero who, while best known for leading a bold airstrike against Japan early in WW II, has made his mark in a wealth of other endeavors. If the memoirs at hand read more like a bare-bones flight log than a reflective autobiography, they at least afford an engrossing record of a remarkable and eventful life. With editorial assistance from Glines (Attack on Yamamoto, Four Came Home, etc.), Doolittle (who turns 95 in October) looks back on seven decades of conspicuous accomplishment as a pilot, military officer, scholar, and businessman. Raised in gold-rush Alaska, the diminutive author earned spending money as a teenaged prizefighter and hard-rock miner. Attracted by the adventure of aviation, he left college in 1917 (one semester shy of a degree) to enlist in the US Army's Air Service. Doolittle won his wings but did not get overseas. After the Armistice, he stayed on to gain renown for the fledgling Air Corps and for himself as a daredevil stunt pilot and racer. The author also earned a Ph.D. at MIT, making substantive contributions to the emergent science of aeronautics. With a growing family to support, however, he resigned his commission in 1930 to accept a lucrative position with Shell Petroleum. Doolittle's corporate post kept him in the limelight, but his greatest acclaim lay ahead. Having rejoined the Army after war broke out in Europe, he organized and led the so-called ``Doolittle Raid'' that helped stem steady reverses in the Pacific theater and that won the author a general's stars and the Congressional Medal of Honor. Since WW II, Doolittle, an outspoken crusader for air power, has served on high-profile commissions and fared well in private enterprise. Doolittle makes a fine job of recalling his public triumphs and setbacks; beyond pro-forma tributes to his wife, though, he acknowledges or dramatizes almost no personal joys or sorrows (even the 1955 suicide of the author's son is dealt with in summary fashion). You Could Do Little To Belittle Doolittle

I COULD NEVER BE SO LUCKY AGAIN, written when Jimmy Doolittle was in his nineties, is a thoroughly refreshing glimpse through a glass lightly at a truly rare bird, a genuine American hero.

Written in the nonrevisionist tenor of PRIDE OF THE YANKEES, Doolittle's life story is told in a straightforward style in which the man fairly leaps off the page at you to grab you in a bear hug. Jimmy Doolittle lived to be nearly one hundred, and his zest for life explains why.

Best known for leading the "30 Seconds Over Tokyo" Raid of 1942, Doolittle did so much more. A true aviation pioneer,barnstormer, inventor, and rugged individualist, he was also the holder of an engineering doctorate, literally dozens of piloting records, and was a happily married man, to boot.

There are no skeletons unearthed, and no deep critiques of the literally thousands of people who passed through Jimmy Doolittle's life, including gold miners and Presidents. This is a memoir in the best sense, not character assassination masquerading as autobiography. Sometimes silence is golden.

On the other hand, Doolittle's self-effacing, humorous brand of Self is reflected in the amusing letters he received from friends such as Roscoe Turner and General "Georgie" Patton. His was an era of true loyalties and good old fashioned gumption.

Jimmy Doolittle was a man who loved life, and it shows.

An amazing story from a true pioneer and gentleman warrior

Jimmy Doolittle is a giant in the aviation world. Although most remember him for the Tokyo bombing raid if 1942 (see the movie Pearl Harbor for his latest incarnation), Doolittle was responsible for many of the safety measures now taken for granted by pilots in the world today in the early daus of test flying in the Army Air Corps. He left the service, did some private consulting, and when World War II loomed ahead of us, he returned to duty, rising to a position of senior leadership in the war in Europe.
Doolittle achieved great success in the air, but this book will also teach the reader about his scientific abilities, and his corporate roles played in life, as well as his influence on some major policy movements in the US Government and the military after his retirement.
For just the story on his involvement in the Tokyo Riad, this would be well worth the read. However, this book is much more than that, and very well told by a modest, gentleman warrior of a different era.
For another account of the Tokyo Raid, I would suggest Ted Lawson's Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo.

Lucky

This book is for the fans of "The Greatest Generation"-type books. Both Patton and Macarthur got cinematic limelight, but we hear less about Admiral Nimitz, and even less about Doolittle. This book completes the Temple of the World War II Titans.

As I read, two things impressed me. First was Doolittle's down-to-earth and conversational style. I felt like he was sitting next to me, chatting on the on the golf course, and just reminiscing between tees. The second was the drastic changes in flight that occurred during his fourscore and ten years. He saw aviation from the Wrights brothers to the Space Shuttle. All in one lifetime!

I was also surprised how involved he was in developing aviation technology--he had a hand in the modern cockpit instrumentation. Things such as the artificial horizon, radar, and the dashboard layout came, in part, from him.

Other surprising things were behind-the-scene info Billy Mitchell, supply problem in WWII, and also the three friendly fire incident he was involved with. It puts a perspective on the current conflagration.

In order to round out the book, you need two supplementals. The first is to see "Patton." Doolittle provided the air cover for Old Blood and Guts, and the book contains many references and quotes from Patton. Yes, he was accurately portrayed in the movie, except for his voice. Doolittle mention he had a high, almost feminine quality to his voice, which explains his potty tongue.

The second is to read "Catch-22." Yes, Heller is writing about serving under Doolittle. As I read, I wondered if Dreedle=Doolittle.

This book is even-tampered in its approach to war. It is not as idealized as John Wayne, but did not swerve into the demoralizing MASH or Platoon.

One of the finest WWII naval action narratives in recent years, this book follows in the footsteps of Flags of Our Fathers, creating a microcosm of the war's American Navy destroyers. Hornfischer, a writer and literary agent in Austin, Tex., covers the battle off Samar, the Philippines, in October 1944, in which a force of American escort carriers and destroyers fought off a Japanese force many times its strength, and the larger battle of Leyte Gulf, the opening of the American liberation of the Philippines, which might have suffered a major setback if the Japanese had attacked the transports. He presents the men who crewed the destroyer Taffy 3, most of whom had never seen salt water before the war but who fought, flew, kept the crippled ship afloat, and doomed ships fighting almost literally to the last shell. Finally, Hornfischer provides a perspective on the Japanese approach to the battle, somewhat (and justifiably) modifying the traditional view of the Japanese Admiral Kurita as a fumbler or even a coward-while exalting American sailors and pilots as they richly deserve. (American admirals don't get off so easily.) Not entirely free of glitches in research, the book still reads like a very good action novel, indicated by its selection as a dual split main selection of the BOMC and History Book Club alternate.

This piece of World War II naval history reads like a particularly good novel. It is an account of the October 1944 battle off Samar, in which a force of American destroyers and escort carriers drove off a Japanese fleet at least 10 times its strength. The struggle was a part of the epic Battle of Leyte Gulf, which was the beginning of the campaign to liberate the Philippines. Hornfischer focuses on the men of the escort carrier unit Taffy 3 (the radio call signal for Task Unit 77.4.3 --easy to see why it is the preferred designation), who fought, flew, and fired to nearly the last shell in a battle that at least one commander commenced by saying, "Survival cannot be expected." Readable from beginning to end, this popular history magnificently brings to life men and times that may seem almost as remote as Trafalgar to many in the early twenty-first century. Of especial interest are its account of the process that turned civilians into sailors, and its carrying forward of those sailors' stories to the handful of aging survivors still gathering in commemoration today. Heroic stand of tin can sailors

This is an excellent illustration of leadership, courage and heroism. While the major forces of the American navy went after a diversion to the north, early on the morning of October 25, 1944 a powerful Japanese fleet surprised a much smaller American force protecting nascent American gains on Leyte. While historians will long argue the errors that led to this surprise, none can argue that the response from the American forces was dramatic, powerful, effective and almost suicidal. Yankee ingenuity, respect for their leaders, and old-fashioned stick-to-it-iveness made up in quality what the Americans lacked in quantity.

Three small destroyers dashed into harm's way and leveled mortal blows before they succumbed to withering, overpowering -- but often inaccurate -- Japanese fire. While some would flinch at calling these acts 'suicidal' against cruisers and battleships, the sense of purpose and patriotism, combined with the small chance that a good offense is the best defense seemed to drive these men to heights of fury and fight against the thunderstorm of Japanese ships.

Storms actually played a positive role in this fight, hiding both the smaller American ships, sometimes at lucky moments, as well as those pesky American fighter planes darting in and out of the clouds. But what really seems to have mattered was accurate firing, productive -- if incomplete -- intelligence, good leadership, and the absolute audacity of the crews aboard the American ships and planes. And timidity on the part of the Japanese admiral, believing he had stumbled upon a superior force of sull-sized carriers and cruisers, helped turn the onslaught into a full-fledged diaster for the Japanese, who lost perhaps 11,000 men to terrible but lesser casualties of fewer than 1,000 for the inspired Americans.

The research is thorough, with fascinating detail and first-hand reports from the battle and the men who fought it. Maps detailing the progress of this brief but spectacular battle help guide the reader. Read it and respect the men who made this happen.

A ripping yarn........

I had heard of the battle of the "jeep" carriers vs. The central Japanese fleet, how the Japanese decked out Halsey to steam North after an irresistible target, the Imperial fleet's aircraft carriers. I read of the bravery, the improbable victory over a vastly superior foe, suicide destroyer charges against battleships and cruisers........

And I knew nothing. Hornfisher's recounting of the battle puts you in the middle of it: you meet the men involved, feel the fear and bravery, and experience the sheer horror of the last major battle between navies (yes, that long ago). It was horrible reading it, being there must have been ghastly.

So a great read, 40 plane "mini" carriers with older planes with the help of local airstrips maneuver, attack, and pull off an amazing win, well worth it

After they had fired all their torpedoes, in broad daylight, they bluffed torpedo attacks and fired their little 5-inch and 20 mm guns at ships boasting 18-inch and 14-inch naval cannon. And they kept it up until all four were destroyed and sunk, sacrificing themselves to save the fleet of defenseless jeep carriers under their protection. Indeed it was the US Navy's finest hour.

A great story, well told. A must read for fans of the Navy and WWII history. Enthusiastically recommended.

This action packed `Kiss' is more suspense focused as Riley's hunts two killers

Darkest Kiss starts out with half were half vamp Guardian Riley, exploring her newly discovered bird shifting ability. While she's throwing herself out of trees trying to learning to fly without a great deal of success -- her body as battered as the heart she's been guarding closely in the past months since her werewolf lover left her -- she's no longer leaping to act on her libidinous thoughts. In fact apart from a werewolf's prerequisite monthly `moon dances' she's been celibate. Small wonder, if Riley's life has been anywhere as busy as it is during the course of the story there is almost no way she's had time to squeeze in much in the way of extracurricular activity.

The action in Darkest Kiss is pretty much non-stop as Riley is assigned to track down the killer in a high profile murder of a shapeshifter politician and soon after Riley is asked by the hunky stripper werewolf shifter, Shadow, to look into the death of a friend that the authorities are writing off as an accidental death due to a BDSM gone wrong. But as additional bodies stack up, it is apparent to Riley that she's dealing with two serial killers. And while it doesn't take her long to figure out the identity of the killers, stopping them is not going to be anywhere near as easy, as both are powerful insane paranormal entities. Though Riley has really grown into the Guardian role she'd been resisting in previous books, it's going to take more than Riley's powers and a few old friends: seer Dia, horseshifter Kade, her brother Rhoan and a really `old' friend, her former vamp lover Quinn, to keep both Riley and a member of her `pack' from being the next victims.

I enjoyed Darkest Kiss, Arthur makes good use of the paranormal elements of her world and creates some formidable killers - for one, the bakenecko, she draws on Japanese lore to add complexity to the character. She also adds another flavor of vamp to her world, an emo vamp who feeds on emotion, the power hungry Vinnie promises to be a nemesis Riley is sure to encounter again in the future. With everything going on, Quinn who shows up just in time to identify the supernatural species and powers of the killers, didn't play as a big part in the story as the back cover suggests. Though his reconnection to Riley adds a bit of steam, his presence in the story appears to be mostly to set up for future books. For the overall story arc of the series, Darkest Kiss seems to be a transitional book for Riley because the pain and changes in Riley's life and attitudes along with Quinn's regrets look to offer a possibility that they will be able to move past the impasse that forced them apart in previous books.

Though I'm guessing that there will be probably be at least two more Riley Jensen books before Riley gets her happily ever after, there's no info on Arthur's website yet about when the next book will be out, and no title it's just Riley 7. So if you are looking for more Keri Arthur to tide you over, I recommend you hunt down a copy of one of her older romantic paranormal suspense books. One of my favorites, Circle of Desire (Damask Circle, Book 3), contains a beautiful scene with the werewolf "moon ceremony" between soul-mates that Riley refers to throughout the Guardian series and it was worth buying the book for that chapter alone. All three books in this Damask Circle series are stand-alone romantic suspense paranormals, though they are much shorter in length than her Riley Jensen books.

Good addition to the series, but...

Overall, this was a good addition to the series, but the constant shift in focus between two plots slowed down the action a little too much. Sometimes it was hard to keep up with what was happening. The author showed us yet another side of Riley, so much so that I almost didn't recognize her. Seeing Quinn again was nice, and the overall story was good, but the more sluggish pace, as well as less tension between the main characters, made it less enjoyable than other books in the series.

This series is great and this book just adds to it. i love how Quinn is back in the picture, I think he and her will make a great couple if they ever fully get serious. And finally upping Lianders and Rhoans relationship has finally come!!! Its not alot but hey its something. This was a great add on to the series, i couldn't put it down. So many things going on there was never a dull moment.

Chapter 1

For the first time in her thirty-three-year-old life, Shelley Schwartz faked an orgasm. On principle she was opposed to this idea and had, in debates with her friends, been very smug about always hanging in there even if the payoff was more like a blip on the Richter scale than a full-scale movement of the earth.

A woman should never be cruel or unsympathetic in bed, she'd argued, but pretending that something she didn't like might actually lead to an orgasm had potentially dangerous ramifications; how could a woman go into paroxysms of ecstasy over something one day and then fail to get off on it the next? It was Pavlovian training at its most dysfunctional--and most men didn't need any help or encouragement in failing to satisfy.

But today she'd gotten stuck between a rock and a hard place. Well, actually it had been a mattress and Trey Davenport's superbly sculpted chest.

Faking it had turned out to be her only viable option.

Because although her body had been pinned beneath Trey's very studly one, her mind had been trained on her two-thirty meeting--the one at which she intended to show her father and everyone else at the advertising agency that she was not the cream puff they believed her to be. The meeting she'd spent months preparing for, and which she was now racing to at the speed of sound.
Shelley coasted through a four-way stop then mashed down the accelerator, still trying to figure out how an innocent lunch had turned into such a sexual Waterloo.

She'd invited Trey to the Ritz for his birthday, certain they'd have plenty of time for a celebratory lunch before her meeting. Things had been going swimmingly until he dangled the room key in front of her.

She'd felt the smile freeze on her lips, but Trey was a truly sweet and very hunky guy and it was his birthday; she simply couldn't tell him she'd rather go back to the office and pitch a feminine hygiene account. "This is my chance to be taken seriously at work" wasn't going to cut it with a man who'd just turned thirty-five, consumed most of a bottle of Cristal, and was looking at her like she was the icing on his cake.

Unsure what to do, she'd acted pleased and figured if they got right to it, she'd be showered and dressed in plenty of time.

This might have worked except that Trey, ever the gentleman, kept waiting for her to go first. Only Shelley wasn't going anywhere anytime soon and Trey, who ran marathons and climbed mountains, could go for hours if properly motivated. This had never seemed like a bad thing. Until today.
But even as she'd stared at the ceiling and admitted defeat she'd realized it wasn't fair to penalize Trey just because she was throwing in the sexual towel. Surely all God's children deserved an orgasm on their birthday.

So she'd kicked up their rhythm, whispered things in his ear that actually made her blush, and urged him on, giving an Oscar-worthy performance of turned-on womanhood.

And then when she could tell he was hanging on by the very slimmest of threads she'd done it, the thing she'd argued so vehemently against. She'd impersonated herself at her free-falling,
head-banging best and forced Trey Davenport to follow suit.



Despite the compromising of her sexual principles, the meeting was already under way by the time Shelley arrived. The Easy To Be Me people sat with their backs to the conference room door; the Schwartz and Associates team aligned across from them. Her father sat at the head of the table with the indispensable Ross Morgan at his left.

Both men turned as she skidded to a halt in the doorway. Her father sighed. Ross Morgan looked at her as if she were a car wreck he couldn't bear to watch. The conversation sputtered to a stop and everyone else turned to see what they were looking at.

"This is my daughter Shelley," her father announced to the now-silent room.

She swallowed and nodded then forced a smile to her lips. It was only as she moved toward the empty seat at the foot of the table that she noticed the huge run in her stocking. Her heart stopped as she realized that the jacket of her lilac Donna Karan suit, the one she'd bought specifically for this presentation, was misbuttoned, and that the contrasting aqua shell was inside out, the label clearly visible.

She might as well be wearing a sign that read "Delayed due to sex, doesn't know how to dress herself."

Shit, shit, shit. She'd showered in under two minutes, thrown on her clothes, then touched up her makeup in the rearview mirror as she raced to the office. Obviously she should have taken that extra ten seconds in the hotel room for a full-length glimpse.

"I'm sorry I'm late," she said, not even bothering to try to explain. What was there to say? "It's inside-out day at Schwartz and Associates, didn't you get the memo?"

Pulling her notes out of her Louis Vuitton carryall, she decided she'd be a very old woman before she allowed herself to go anywhere near the Ritz at lunchtime again. In fact, she'd give up the Ritz, and possibly sex, for life if Trey's birthday orgasm didn't cost her the opportunity she'd been waiting for.
Ross Morgan speared her with his blue eyes and a familiar tic appeared in his cheek, but it was her father's gaze, filled with disappointment and resignation, that sent the chill up her spine.

Shelley wanted to point out that she'd only been ten minutes late. It wasn't as if she'd blown off the whole thing, or not bothered to do her homework; she knew this client's products like she knew the clearance rack at Neiman's.

Her father gave her a "Don't say a word or you're grounded" look, and Shelley bit her lip and lowered her gaze while Ross Morgan directed everyone's attention back to the storyboards in front of them.

As the meeting progressed, her research was quoted freely, and her ideas were presented and approved, but she wasn't invited to speak. She felt like a child who'd accidentally used a bad word in front of the adults and been banished from polite society.

If Ross Morgan had been ten minutes late, he could have waltzed right in and still taken command of the group. But of course he would have been ten minutes early, not late. And he wouldn't have jeopardized his career in order to give someone an orgasm. Not that he didn't know how to give a woman the "Big O," as she unfortunately knew after ending up in that supply closet with him during last year's holiday party. But he never would have risked business for one. He was always in control of his considerable faculties; always focused, always so sure. How dare he turn out to be the son her father never had!

Shelley kept her gaze fixed on the exposed brick wall of the conference room and worried at her bottom lip until she tasted blood. Forty minutes later there were handshakes all around and Ross--not her--was promising to get things under way, to be in touch, expressing enthusiasm over the opportunity to work together. He promised that they'd be glad they'd put their advertising dollars with Schwartz and Associates.

As usual, she was the Schwartz in disgrace; he was the man in charge.

The Easy To Be Me people filed out of the conference room and the rest of the staff followed.

"Shelley," her father said, "you and Ross come with me." They followed in silence and sank into chairs across from his desk in the big corner office. Still silent, Harvey Schwartz studied them both.

"Daddy, I'm sorry, I . . ."

Her father ran a hand through his graying hair and sighed again. "Never mind, sweetheart. Perhaps we expected too much of you this time."

"No." When had her father ever expected anything of her? "I can handle this. I did the research, a lot of the ideas were mine."

"Yes, Ross told me that."

Well at least he hadn't tried to snatch the credit. "This account is perfect for me."

"Yes." He smiled sadly. "But are you perfect for the account?" He let the question hang in the air. "

Your prep work was first-rate, but you weren't here when the time came to close the deal. You can't pick and choose which parts of the job you're going to do."

Ross stared out the window, his expression making it clear he wasn't going to weigh in on the subject. So why was he there? she wondered miserably. Why was he always there being so damned competent? And why did she keep screwing up?

"It won't happen again, Daddy. Just let me have this account. Let me show you what I can do."

Her father sighed again. He was forever chucking her under the chin like a child, or sighing over her.

"I'm sorry, Shelley, but I just can't take the chance. We're talking billings of more than a million dollars. You can work on the account, but you'll work under Ross's guidance. He'll decide what your role will be and how much responsibility to give you."

His intercom buzzed, and his secretary's voice squawked in the too-quiet room. "I've got to take this call. Why don't you two sit down over a cup of coffee and hash it out? There's plenty of work for everyone."

But not plenty of room to earn credit for the success of this campaign.

Shelley followed her nemesis out of the office and down the long hallway. It would be easier to hate him if he'd just go ahead and be a jerk, rub it in, lord it over her. But he was always polite and completely professional. Well, except for that time in the supply closet.

Why couldn't he be short and balding with a squeaky nerd voice, instead of tall and blond with that deep rumbly baritone? Life was so unfair.

Ross paused at the door to his own corner office. "So do you want to discuss this now, or would you like to go finish dressing?"

She was tempted to pull off the blouse and redress in front of him just to see the expression on his face. She hated that he was everything her father wanted and that she apparently was not. What was the point of trying to be professional? When no one expected anything of you, how long could you keep trying to prove them wrong?

"I'm as dressed as I plan to be," Shelley replied quietly. "But my nails are a bit ragged." She looked down at them as if they mattered then raised her chin a notch. "I don't think we need to have this same old motivational chat, do you? You don't really want me mucking around in this account, and we both know my father doesn't really care whether I help or not."

She cocked her head to the side and looked at him from beneath her lashes. "I think I'll just run out and get my nails done, maybe do a little shopping."

He didn't try to stop her, didn't argue, didn't do anything but look at her out of those serious blue eyes. As if she were some alien species that he'd never run across before.

Her pride was about all she had propping her up, so she kept her tone light and her chin up as she turned to leave. "I'm pretty sure that's what daddy's girls are supposed to do."


Chapter 2

Shelley shopped until the stores closed. Like an alcoholic hanging in until the last call, she prowled the aisles of her favorite stores until the doors locked behind her at ten p.m. The hurt had begun to numb in the lingerie department of Saks. By the time she picked up a new Kate Spade bag at Bloomingdale's, she was close to philosophic. No one really expected her to work a full-time job, and her salary was clearly not dependent on her performance.

So she'd made a mistake. So she'd shown up late and embarrassingly disheveled for the most important business meeting of her life. Beating herself up about it was getting her exactly nowhere.

Letting herself into her Buckhead condo, Shelley dropped her shopping bags in the foyer, moved into the black-and-white kitchen, and dialed her voice mailbox number. Cradling the phone against her shoulder, she flipped the kitchen shutters closed on the view of midtown Atlanta and sank onto a kitchen chair to listen to her messages.

"Shelley, it's Nina. I'm taking a personal day tomorrow. I'm thinking the nine a.m. Pilates and lunch at Panera's. Then I was thinking facial. A best friend is supposed to tell a girl when her pores look like moon craters."

The next voice belonged to her mother. As usual, Miriam Schwartz wasted no time on a greeting. "Daddy told me you left early today." There was a pause. "I hope you're not too upset; there'll be other accounts. Don't forget dinner tomorrow night. We're going to do the whole Friday night thing. Marilyn Friedlander's grandson is in town and I invited him to join us."

Shelley rolled her eyes.

"Don't roll your eyes at me." Even through the receiver and cyberspace, or wherever this message had been stored, her mother's irritation was clear. "He's a very nice boy. An accountant. A girl could do worse."

Yes, a girl could, Shelley reflected as she listened to the remaining messages, and often had. Her mother's steady stream of Jewish men had covered every legitimate profession and a few that told her just how desperate her mother had grown. She'd known she was in deep shit when Malcolm the Maccabee, a rising star on the professional wrestling circuit, had shown up for a family meal.

Of course, she hadn't done that well on her own, either. Her choices were almost always blond-haired, blue-eyed, and athletic like Trey. It was no fun to be out with someone you thought you could hurt or outwrestle--but their one common attribute had been their non-Jewishness and their inability to commit--at least to her.

Trey's message reminded her that some good had come out of what she now thought of as the Ritz fiasco.

"Thanks for the, uh, birthday send-off." The smile in his voice was clear.

She smiled in response as she remembered his shout of pleasure and the warmth with which he'd shown his gratitude.

"I'm leaving for that white-water trip in the morning, but I'll call you when we get back to civilization."

Good old Trey, so Waspy, so rugged. As long as he didn't expect her to rough it with him, they'd get along just fine.

Her older sister's voice came next--rushed and out of breath as usual. Most of Judy Schwartz Blumfeld's calls were placed via cell phone from car pool lines or Little League fields. And they were almost always instructional in nature. "Shel, will you bring those fabric swatches I left at your house to Mom and Dad's tomorrow night? The bar mitzvah coordinator wants to see them. I'm thinking about using them for the central color theme."

Her nephew Sammy's bar mitzvah, whose theme was apparently "Bigger Than Ben-Hur," was a mere five months away.

"I understand Mom found you an accountant this time," her sister concluded. "Maybe you should bring your tax forms so it isn't a total loss."

Ha, ha. Shelley moved to the refrigerator and pulled out a Diet Coke. Easy for Judy to joke. She'd married a lawyer and produced two sons, thereby fulfilling their parents' fondest hopes. She had done everything Shelley was now supposed to do, but didn't want to. And tomorrow night Judy would have her whole perfect family with her. If you added the accountant to the equation, you had the perfect end to the perfect week.

fun chick lit tale

When sixty something Harvey Schwartz undergoes emergency by-pass surgery and is forced to take an earlier than planned retirement, his thirty-three years old daughter Shelley expects to be placed in charge of the family business Schwartz & Associates. Instead her dad selects hot shot Ross Morgan to run the advertising firm especially after she comes very late to a critical client meeting looking as if she had sex, which she did with her boyfriend Trey Davenport.

Shelley takes out her disappointment on Ross, who pulls no punches that she has not earned the position as he did and if she was not related to the owner she would have been fired years ago. He challenges her to prove her worth by handing her several dormant cases to drum up needed business. Shelley plans to prove him wrong even as their boardroom squabble lead to love.

This fun chick lit tale stars a Jewish American princess who cannot understand why daddy did not entrust her with the company (readers will know why) and a hardworking intelligent hunk who refuses to take any guff from her. The story line is lighthearted especially as her matchmaking mother keeps parading potential Jewish spouses that Shelley rejects because they come from her mom and she refuses to date anyone Jewish. A final twist makes for a fine boardroom to bedroom romance.

Single Jewish girl not looking for a man

At Swartz & Associates, Shelly has the label of being the founder's daughter who never took her position at the company seriously. In Atlanta, she spends money like crazy (which isn't hard to do) and shows up to work when her appointments at the Spa or her shrink permits. Nobody at the company takes her seriously.

When her Father is rushed to the hospital for an emergency bypass surgery, Shelly learns that Ross Morgan will be taking over as President of Schwartz & Associates. Shelly is not pleased about this because of her love/hate relationship with Morgan.

Shelly makes a promise to herself that she is going to whatever is neccessary to keep her job and prove Morgan wrong that she is just a "Daddy's Girl".

This was my first read by Wendy Maxx and I enjoyed it. It was a funny, fast read centered around the hustle & bustle of Atlanta.

Very disappointed

I was really looking forward to reading the newest book, I even read the excerpt from Wendy Wax's website. It sounded cute and had some great possibility. I should have just read the excerpt and saved myself some money and time.

Shelley is your typical spoiled princess, daddy gave her a job and apparently one with very good money attached to it. She doesn't take anything serious until her father decides to hand over running the agency to her nemisis Ross. They have history, we don't really know why, there is no explanation about the "supply closet sex." They really don't interact,I would think in order to have some type of romance the couple should actually be in the same room together. There are so many characters in this book I would think you would need a program to keep them straight. There were just too many stories going on to really make this a good book. I will have to see if her next book is better. The other two reviews must be talking about a different book.

Reed will find lots of work in the audio whodunit world. She has a low, slightly gravelly voice that fits the genre well. She distinguishes characters without trying to be them and helps a wacky protagonist become a believable character. The gruesome story begins with the discovery of the bodies of six young girls who are bagged, tagged and shelved in an old underground chamber in the yard of an abandoned Boston insane asylum. Bobby Dodge (returning from Gardner's Alone) is called to the crime scene. Gardner offers up numerous plausible suspects, suspense and violence, and lots of requited and unrequited love. The book is longer than it needs to be, somewhat repetitive and has a hokey ending with a murderer who appears out of nowhere. But Hide is still an enjoyable thriller and a well-read listen.

Really Scary

I almost put this one down, then thought about it and opened it again, telling myself I will just read a little more. Before I knew it, I had read something like 50+ pages, and couldn't put it down...."Honey, how about fish tacos from that place that does 'Taco Tuesday'?!" Gross, awful stuff in this one - definitely not for the faint of heart. Multiple times you won't be able to put it down.

Another good work by Lisa Gardner

Yes, I enjoyed this book. It seemed to start a little slow but it did pick up and had many interesting characters. I saw the review from BOOKLIST that said something like: Head and shoulders above anything else she has written and this is Lisa Gardner at the height of her powers. That is not word for word, but pretty close. That also is not right. Lisa Gardner has written a lot of very good thrillers and I count her as one of my favorite authors. I look forward to her next book whenever it is coming out. Part of this book was written in third person and some in first person from the point of view of Annabelle, the main heroine. As a child she is moved with her family repeatedly and during the course of the story we get the idea why and then that turns out to be not what it seems to be. Was it all her father's imagination? sigh... Anyway, D.D. and Bobby are the two main detectives on the case after an undergorund chamber is discovered containing six bodies is found. D.D. is the lead detective on the case and she calls in Bobby from the State Police to help out. I guess she calls him in just because they once had a thing for each other. Yes, the Catherine connection is there, but that seemed a little weak to me. The whole Catherine Cagnon thing just seemed like a way to make the story longer. When we got to the final resolution it seemed like half of Boston was populated by nuts who should have still been locked up in the mental ward. I don't see the necessity to comment on that statement. The climax to the story gives us multiple psychopaths who have assumed new identities. D.D. is correct when she calls something that was overlooked a 'rookie' mistake. Shoot, even I wouldn't have made that mistake. Anyway, this is a good read that keeps the reader interested. Lisa Gardner keeps the action moving and never lets the plot slow down while the main characters get too bogged down in their personal demons (something that really bugs me in a lot of novels.) Yes, all of the main characters have issues from the past to deal with, but they don't spend half the book crying about them. 'HIDE' is an easy book to recommend but to say that this is Gardner's best work ever is setting the bar a little high. I say, go ahead and buy it. One of the better efforts by one of the more dependable authors around.

When thirty-two year old Anabelle Granger, who had returned to Boston ten years ago after a hurried departure as a child, saw media reports of her murder in a gruesome underground setting, she felt compelled to contact the head detective, female D.D. Warren. Her father had suddenly uprooted her family many years ago when it was discovered that someone was stalking her to prevent precisely that - her death. Her since cautious life, including assuming an alternate identity, Tanya Nelson, and learning martial arts, starts to unravel as she is drawn into this crime scenario that has similarities to one where twelve year old Catherine Gagnon was held underground and brutalized for thirty days before being miraculously discovered some twenty-seven years prior.

Annabelle has the good fortune to have Bobby Dodge, former police sniper and now state police detective, assigned to the case and take a very personal interest. The fast-moving plot revolves around the crime scene on the large grounds of a long-closed hospital for the mentally disturbed and former patients and employees of the facility. Intriguing to Dodge is the uncanny resemblance that Annabelle has to the older Catherine. Is that mere coincidence?

The book is both interesting and plausible, with just enough misdirection, though the ending constructed by the author is not overly ambitious, perhaps predictable. The obvious attraction of mild-mannered hunk detective Bobby Dodge to D.D, Catherine, and Annabelle could have been more vigorously pursued. The book is another very good offering by the author, maybe not her best, but the nonetheless very good.

In her quest, Kate falls not just for John but also for his children, Maggie and Teddy, as they grieve for their mother, recently killed in a car accident. John grieves, too, so bothered by memories of his wife's adultery he does not see what his children see-that Kate is just what the O'Rourke family needs. Familiar Rice themes of sisterhood, loss and the healing power of love are spotlighted, but Rice's interest in the human psyche has its dark side as well, demonstrated by her creation of a rogue psychologist who subverts the ethics of his profession. Since Rice's fiction often serves as beach reading, it is appropriate that the shore scenes, including a cinematic climax in an old lighthouse, should be among the novel's strongest. Rice's heartfelt personal tone and the novel's cunningly deranged villain make this a smooth-flowing and fast-paced effort, with justice served all around at the satisfying if predictable conclusion.

A very good book by Luanne

Different from her other works. I almost couldn't believe it was her writing this suspense. It reminded me somewhat of Greg Iles "The Quiet Game", also a story of a widower father who is an attorney and getting involved in a case in his home town that affects him personally.
In this story, the attorney, John O'Rourke, is a widower with 2 kids, a teen son and a daughter. He is trying his best to raise them in his home town where everyone knows them, but is making enemies by taking on a horrible case. He is representing an admitted serial killer of young women and the town hates him for it. Along comes a lovely woman who believes this serial killer may be the cause for her sisters disappearance 6 months prior in this area. John is torn between wanting to help the woman, whom he is attracted to, and doing his best for his client. The story takes many twists and turns and is written very well. You feel connected to these characters and think about them even when you are not reading... that's the sign of a well written novel.
Luanne writes in the same New England setting that she has used in her other books. Her characters, even the pets, have captivating personalities, and the discriptive locale always makes you want to go there. Another great book by Ms. Rice... do some more like this, Luanne.

Basil St. Cloud is at the center of this dispute and as his relationship with Campion deepens, he finds that his historical findings have modern, highly political implications. As all scholars know, the kings were corrupt and their wizards were simply charlatans, but St. Cloud has discovered an ancient source that promises something altogether different. However, the Council of Lords becomes aware that the northern-most parts of the country are murmuring for a return to monarchy and, suspecting the University as a source for the discontent, they send a spy to ferret out information. St. Cloud and his students become the focal point for an explosive denouement that is as tragic as it is inevitable. Kings stands on its own in all its intricate, fascinating glory. The characters are fully realized, and some of the secondary ones, like Campion's mother, are so well done that they threaten to steal scenes. Kushner and Sherman inject plenty of humor and bawdiness into their tale, providing grounding for some of the abstruse historical debates. This is high fantasy at its best-literate, passionate, and compelling.

The long-gestated but splendid continuation of Kushner's Swordspoint (1987) resumes its timeline about 60 years later. Theron Campion, idle-rich noble of royal blood, seeks to banish his idleness at the university, where he and scholar Basil St. Cloud become lovers. So far, so good, except that St. Cloud firmly believes in the virtues of the overthrown kings and their wizards--a belief that is not just politically incorrect but treasonous, and one that flings both men into deadly intrigues, not all of them necessarily over and done with at book's end, despite the high body count. This is a high-fantasy novel of rare quality, in which the richly detailed world building leaps out and seizes the reader, probably even one new to this particular world. Nor are the characterizations of either the two lovers or their supporting cast wanting, and that goes especially for Theron's remarkable and unorthodox mother. Literate, absorbing, and with bite to it, the book shows that Kushner and Sherman together are quite up to the standards of either on her own. Roland Green

Marginal

Being a fan of the world of Swordspoint, I couldn't wait for this book to arrive. I stayed up to read it. I'm done now, and the only thing that really comes to mind in response is;

"Oh, re-ally?"

It's the sort of book that when you read it, you want it to be better. I kept waiting for the big payoff, or a at least a touching scene between Theron and Basil. Neither happened. While waiting for that, I kept a laundry list of things that were bothering me the whole time I was reading the book:

1. Radical Retconning: There had been, in the first two books, some suggestions of some vaguely anglican religion. Katherine had spoken of the fetival that happened on Last Night in the Priveledge of the Sword, and Richard and Octavia actually described a whole night of festivities. None of these festivities included stags, kings, deers, wizards, or anything else that this book claims is tradition. On the same topic, Katherine's behavoir seems really weird for her. As does Gregory's. Marcus..... would the real Marcus please stand up?

2. Random Sex. Why on earth do Basil and Theron like each other enough to bang? I don't get it. Basil seems more annoyed by Theron most of the time. I had a relationship like this once..... it didn't end up in me dying for the fellow. It ended in me RUNNING AWAY.

3. Wandering Plot: There are all sorts of stings hanging loose and confusing at the end. I, frankly, don't get the end at all. It makes NO SENSE. If we presume that indeed, this is some sort of wiccan-type magic at the end, then Theron oughta be dead. The end resolution could use some smoke and mirrors or at least a handwave or two.

4. Exposition, after exposition, after exposition..... oh god. And lots of Captain Obvious.

5. Transparent Plot: As much as it wandered, the basic plot line was so thin and transparent none of the exclaimations and surprise of the characters when they finally discovered the Truth (captital T and all) seemed genuine.

I'm a fan of this world, but this was just plain painful to read.

Oh, and the Richard's Ghost thing.... it does seem out of character, he's not the sort of person that would come back to Riverside, I think he'd prefer to live out his ghostly hours where he had been happy. But, if he had returned to the riverside house and practiced sword like he had when he was younger -- why couldn't have Alec been there by the fire, keeping him company? Is there no peace for the dead?

An exquisite work of alternate history,a perfect novel

This book is fabulous in all senses. From the description of the University's ambience to the unveiling of the mystery of the city's history, to the fascinating charachters of Basil St Cloud, Theron Campion and his mother, the devious anti-revisionist
Crabbe (by the way Crabbe is also the name of one of the minions of Malfoy,Harry Potter's enemy),Nicholas Galing and all the others.But oh, the sumptuous writings, the splendid descriptions of the parties of the nobility, whit a dialogue almost Wildean in its witticism, the obsessive power of artifacts...all is superb. The passages in which Basil St Cloud is first obsessed by luscious and archaic dreams, then awakens and peruses a strange old book who he believes is the origin of the dreams...well,you have to read it. You are reminded of Vandermeer's Book of Ambergris.But The Fall Of Kings is an absolute masterpiece, in a class of his own.

A Disappointment

I bought this book because it is a sequel to Swordspoint, which I enjoyed enormously. The characters all seem fairly realistic in this work, and there are touches of the diction that Kushner employed in Swordspoint-- unfortunately, I don't think I need to read anything more of Ms. Sherman's work, though. I'd be interested to read the original short story which this novel was based on, for I suspect that the parts I like best are from that short story.
My second objection comes in because there's a LOT more smut in this novel than there needed to be: the book could've been accomplished without getting quite so earthy (and at least one of the authors managed this feat in a book called Swordspoint). I'm not objecting on the ground of some conservative perspective: I share a sexual preference with the main characters in this world.
I have recommended this book to some friends- but made sure they understood that they'd be wandering into what's at-least-R-rated so they could, if they chose, not find themselves reading a passage describing a rather heated coupling while on public transit. The other problem with the smut to me is that the plotline of the story, which was rather clever, seemed to be used as a string on which episodes of the two male characters making love were threaded like pearls.
I honestly don't feel Ms. Sherman contributed very much to this book, and am not looking forward to her next Swordspoint-sequel book. The main reason I am giving this book two stars is because its publication has occasioned a reprinting of Swordspoint, which is a good that makes up for a great deal of banality.
