Not my favorite Hunter, but still a really good book

Madeline Hunter is a terrific writer of historical romance. IMHO, she has written some of the most exciting and different medieval romances to be released in the past few years. She has set herself a tough standard though, and for me Lord of a Thousand Nights doesn't quite match the quality of her others.
Don't get me wrong, this doesn't mean it's not a really good book...it is. It's just a little more conventional, and a little less intriguing than her last efforts. I didn't learn as much from this novel, which may sound like a strange comment if you haven't read a book by Ms. Hunter before. One of the more fascinating qualities about Hunter's By... series and The Protector is that they look at the medieval world from slightly different angles than the "typical" medieval romance. Whether the hero was a merchant or stonemason instead of a knight/lord, or the heroine was a potter or a serf instead of a lady, the characters in the previous novels were different, and the settings unique.
In comparison, Lord of a Thousand Nights doesn't give you enough of that. The heroine (Reyna) is a widowed lady and the hero (Ian) is the less-than-honorable head of a mercenary company hired by Morvan Fitzwaryn (hero of The Protector) to seige and hold the tower in which Reyna lives. That Ian succeeds in his task and Reyna is then dependent upon him for her safety is a given, and it's a plot device that works. It's tried and true. That's the problem with Lord of a Thousand Nights - it plays by the expected medieval rules and that's disappointing from an author who was so exciting because she was rewriting the standard.
The characters are good: Reyna and (Ian also recurring from The Protector) are engaging and well-drawn; and they're a good match for each other. Reyna is feisty without being too stupid to live (TSTL in romance reader shorthand), and Ian is an alpha warrior who isn't afraid to think outside the box. That quality includes his dealings with Reyna, and his invention of devices to make his work easier. That plot element was fun, and gave Ian more depth than your usual "me-alpha-knight" character. I liked the h/h byplay, and I liked seeing them both interact with characters from Ms. Hunter's previous books.
I really don't like the title of this book, which puts so much emphasis on Ian(it's his nickname, which just seems so silly), because to me this story is really more about Reyna and her history/land than it is about Ian. But hey, that's my opinion.
Overall, Lord of a Thousand Nights is a well-written, historically detailed medieval romance with characters you will enjoy getting to know and a plot that is interesting if not entirely unique. If it were written by anyone but Madeline Hunter, I would probably have given it 5 stars. Unfortunately it just doesn't live up to the standard she's set for herself, so it gets 4. But do yourself a favor, and check out anything by this talented author. You really can't go wrong.

Good book,though not the best of Ms. Hunter

I can't tell if I liked this story or not. I loved the preceding four books and think I liked this book only because I was waiting to read it. If I had picked this one up without reading the others, (By Design, By Arrangement, The Protector and By Possession) I do not think I would have enjoyed it quite as much. We see the characters from the other books and actually continue the story of the retaking of Harclow for Morvan. I really enjoyed seeing "the gang" and often complain about other authors where we never see characters from other stories. Unfortunately, I think it would be a bit confusing if you have not read their stories first.
That said, I thought the writing was well done and enjoyable to read. Our characters are deep, with complex histories. The building of the story and how the plots intertwined was exciting and kept my interest keen. I was glad that Morvan finally regains his birthright (as we knew he would), but I was a bit disappointed in how it effects the other people in the story.
I have always loved how Ms. Hunter brings the past to life. She uses history and makes it seem, as the reader, that you were right in the thick of the action. I guess that is where my reservations of this book come from. There was little history and descriptive passages of everyday life which was evident in her other stories. Much of this book takes place during war and sieges in 14th century England, yet instead of feeling like I was a participant in the battles, I felt like most every other book I have read, like an outside observer. Lord of a Thousand Nights is still an excellent book, just not what I have come to expect from Ms. Hunter.

This book is likely to keep YOU up for a thousand nights.

WOW! When I found this book on amazon I thought 'must buy' and so I bought it. Simply because it looked hot, and because I adored By Arrangement. When I read LoaTN, I discovered that the book was even hotter than I'd dared hope for. Ian was, to be blunt, all man. And I'm talking MAN! He was sexy, proud, sexy, strong, sexy, tender, sexy, filled with a gorgeous and admirable love for Reyna and, yep, sexy. He possessed all qualities a great hero should have, and then some. And he played his part from the second Reyna looked at him.

Reyna was also incredible. I hate it when the heroine is too stupid to take a breath and walk at the same time. Thank God, and Madeline Hunter, that Reyna was not like Barbie, even if she was blond, thin and very much like the first breath of dawn. Reyna was smart and she had guts! I absolutely loved reading about how she teased Ian, and then froze (or melted ;) )when he tried to seduce her. Yet she tried to stick to what she wanted, and while reading the book I almost cheered 'Go Reyna, go Reyna!'But, don't get me wrong. I cheered 'Go Ian' more than a few times. I loved every scene with him in it, but SPOILER when he rescues her from Reginald, I just felt this surge of devotion and sweet love for him.

Ian and Reyna were made for each other. That's something we all knew from the start. I mean: it was never likely that Reginald or perhaps Elizabeth would ever interfere with the action.

I loved reading how they got to really know each other (and not just physically :P )and how they both changed for the other.

There are so much I liked about this book. Reading about Christiana, David, Morvan and Anna again was GREAT, and all the characters were so convincing. And also, Madeline Hunter has done some great historical research. From warfare down to the thinnest shift. I think, or, all right, I know, that what I liked a lot was Ian's personality. I enjoyed that he was a bit arrogant and full of himself. That's what made him pursue Reyna with such vigor. He was so certain of his own sexuality (I mean, just look at the title), that he had no trouble helping Reyna with hers.

Okey,I'll stop talking about Ian now. I just want you, yes YOU, to buy this book. It's only a couple of dollars and that's like nothing when you think of the experience that awaits you when you read it.

I just know that I loved, oh LOVED, this book and I find myself opening it at a random page to read about l'amour when I want to read something good.

You know, this book actually kept me up for one night, which isn't so cool when you're a student, but- Why are you still reading? Buy it!

Chapter One


FIRST THERE WAS a snapping sound . . . then a combination of rushing wind and sheer terror. One thousand feet of empty space separated Murphy from the raging river and instant death.

For a split second he was suspended in midair like an eagle soaring in the sky. Then gravity took over. Adrenaline surged through his body and his grip tightened on the cable like a vice. Teeth clenched together, barely breathing, all he could do was to desperately hang on.

As Murphy first approached the one-hundred-and-fifty-foot-wide gorge, he could see two cables spanning the void attached to large trees on either side. The first cable was low to the ground; the second, about six feet above. Hanging from the center of the top cable was what looked like a manila envelope twisting in a gentle breeze.

He shook his head. That must be the prize.

As Murphy moved closer to the edge, he reached up, grabbed the top cable, and pulled hard. Very tight.

Then he carefully leaned out and looked over the edge. The sight of the wild Arkansas River one thousand feet below almost took his breath away.

Do you really want to do this, Murphy? As much as you love adventure, someday Methuselah is going to get you killed.

He carefully surveyed the surroundings looking for the slightest movement. Although he could see no one, his skin began to crawl with the eerie sensation that he was being observed.

He took several deep breaths then slowly inched his way onto the cables. Holding on to the top cable with both hands and standing on the bottom cable, he bounced up and down to test their strength.

As he ventured out on the cables, he realized that he had two problems: the up-and-down motion and the back-and-forth motion: the back-and-forth motion, in particular, put more weight on his hands when his feet were not directly under his body. If he had to use up his upper body strength to move the seventy-five feet to the center, it would be a very long way back.

It didn't take him long to realize that it was not a good idea to look down at the potential thousand-foot fall.

Keep your mind on the envelope and not swinging back and forth.

It took Murphy almost fifteen minutes to reach the envelope. The closer he got to the center of the gorge, the more his swinging motion of the cables increased and the more his body weight on the lower cable caused the distance between the two cables to stretch. Even though he was six foot three, his arms were now extended above his head to almost his full reach.

Only three more feet to go, he thought reassuringly.

Murphy smiled to himself as he drove into his reserved parking spot on the Preston University campus. Arriving early gave him some precious minutes alone to gather his thoughts before his classes began.

A good night's sleep . . . great cup of coffee . . . and a bright sunny morning with no clouds in the sky . . . it's great to be alive.

The manicured lawns and lush trees made a striking contrast against the blue sky. The smell of magnolias filled the air. Murphy had grown to love the southern lifestyle. He also had grown to love his classes in biblical archaeology. In three years, they had become some of the most popular courses at the university. He was grateful for the opportunity he had to combine his love for archaeology with his love for the Bible. Everyone seemed to enjoy his lectures. Everyone, that is, except Dean Archer Fallworth.

Murphy glanced up as Shari bounced into the office, her sparkling green eyes alive with energy.

"You seem pretty happy for an assistant who's late to work," Murphy teased.

"I would have been here early if I didn't have to stop to pick up your mail," she replied, smiling and dropping a stack of letters, magazines, and a small box on his desk.

The brown-paper-wrapped box caught his attention. It bore no return address, only the name Tyler Scott. There was no sound when he shook it.

Shari was pretending to be busy, but Murphy could see her eyeing the box. It could be some unusual new artifact from a distant land. She was a dedicated archaeologist, and she was extremely curious. Because Murphy loved to tease Shari, he set the box down, picked up his lecture notes, and started to review them.

"Aren't you going to open it?" Shari asked.

"Open what?"

"You know exactly what. Here're some scissors."

Murphy laughed and opened the box. Shari cocked her head, watching, as he drew out an unsigned card, which Murphy read aloud:

A gorgeous sight,
A Royal delight.
Travel not at night
But in the daylight. He's looking for you to come!

Beyond the gates
He there awaits.
He's looking for you to come!

For he to you, he cannot go.
For him his time is slow.
He's looking for you to come!

His name has been caught.
It is Tyler Scott.

"That's weird," Shari said, looking puzzled. "What do you think that means?"

"I think it means trouble."

"Trouble?"

"Who else would send a strange riddle and leave it unsigned?"

Shari's look of curiosity changed to a look of anxiousness. "Do you think it is from Methuselah?"

"Good guess, Shari. I wonder what he is planning now."

Murphy was now close enough to reach the manila envelope twisting in the wind. His left hand bore his entire weight on the top cable as he reached out and removed the envelope with his right.

He shoved the envelope down the neck of his shirt for safety, then grabbed the cable again with both hands. After a few deep breaths, he began to walk carefully back across the cables toward his starting point.

"Are you having fun, Dr. Murphy? I know I am," Methuselah's voice boomed out, almost causing Murphy to lose his balance.

Where was the sound coming from? Murphy glanced around, but over the roaring of the waters below and the blood pounding in his ears, he had no clue.

"I think that it has been too easy for you so far. Don't you think so too, Dr. Murphy?"

Murphy tried to speed up his efforts to reach the safety of the canyon wall.

Methuselah's laugh echoed from the nearby rocks. "Slow down, Murphy. There's no need to hurry."

With that, the cable under Murphy's feet gave way. Instantly all of his weight shifted to his hands and arms as he dangled above the gorge.

Working frantically, Murphy was able to swing his legs up and catch the heel of his right foot, then his left, on the upper cable. Now he was hanging above the gorge by his legs and arms.

"How long do you think you can hang on, Dr. Murphy?" Methuselah called out, cackling.

"Long enough do slide across the cable and wring your neck!" Murphy cried.

"Now, now, Doctor. You sound as if you might be upset. Let's see if we can make it a little more interesting for you."

Methuselah's cackling laugh increased, and then the upper cable snapped. Murphy could feel himself falling.

"Do you have any idea what the riddle means?" Shari asked with a puzzled frown as she twirled one of her jet-black pigtails in her fingers.

"No, but I'm sure that it's one of his coded messages. I think we'll have to take it apart piece by piece."

"Well, he does mention 'He's waiting for you to come' five different times. That must be significant."

"It must be a key thought. Let's start with the last stanza. 'Don't be a blunder-head the Spanish name it . . . for the color red.'"

"Could that Spanish word be the name for a state? The state of Colorado?"

"Good, Shari. This Tyler Scott he mentioned has been caught."

"Maybe he has been caught telling a lie or caught with his hand in the cookie jar. Or caught being late to work for picking up some dangerous mail." Shari grinned.

Murphy smiled. "Or maybe he's been caught by the police. Look at the phrase 'his time is slow.' He may be doing time in prison."

"That would tie in with the 'gates' and that 'he cannot go' but you must come to him. How about 'gorgeous sight, a Royal delight'? What's that all about?"

"Hmmm. Colorado--prison--gorgeous sight--a Royal delight."

Murphy paced the floor, repeating those words and brushing his fingers through his hair. Then he stopped suddenly and looked at her.

"I think I've got it."

"Well, don't keep me in suspense. What have you got?"

"When I was a young boy I visited Colorado with my parents. We flew into Denver and rented a car and spent almost a month exploring the state. On one of those trips we went to Colorado Springs and Pike's Peak. From there we went to a town called Pueblo. West of Pueblo is Ca–on City. What do you think it is famous for?"

"Cañons?"

"Quick, Shari. No, it's famous for the Ca–on City State Penitentiary. It has a bizarre history."

"Bizarre sounds like it's right up Methuselah's alley. It's his kind of place. He should live there permanently."

"It was the home of the Do-It-Yourself Hanging Machine. One of the prisoners designed a self-triggering platform that would eliminate the need for a formal execution. The person who was to die would pull the lever himself. The machine operated through a series of pulleys. The pulleys would put three hundred pounds of pressure on the rope. A Completely Engrossing Supernatural Adventure

After working on eleven books in the phenomenal Left Behind series, you might think that Tim LaHaye would relax a bit. Instead he has found another writing partner, Greg Dinallo, and has begun a new series of thrillers starting with BABYLON RISING. Dr. LaHaye says that he is more excited about this than any of the other books he has ever written. That's quite a comment from the author of more than forty books, including the Left Behind series that has sold over 60 million copies! But within the first few pages of BABYLON RISING, the reader will begin to share his enthusiasm and become totally engrossed in this supernatural adventure.
Michael Murphy teaches Biblical Archaeology and Prophecy at Preston College --- not exactly an "A" list course. To enhance his classroom lectures and satisfy his desire to authenticate the Bible, he seeks and uncovers ancient artifacts that are directly tied to Biblical events. This scholar/adventurer image makes him somewhat of a campus hero and students flock to hear him bring the Bible to life.
For the reader's enlightenment, chapters are interspersed with the story of King Nebuchadnezzer, the world's most powerful ruler, and Daniel, the young Israeli slave who fearlessly interprets the King's dreams. This writing technique serves to underscore the role that faith plays in the lives of people throughout history. Faith that allows a young slave to stand fearlessly before the most powerful man on earth and tell him the hard truth, knowing that his God will protect him regardless of the King's reaction. Faith that allows a small-town college professor to stand up to evil forces in order to unearth ancient Biblical artifacts that glorify God, the enemy of evil.
While Michael Murphy is busy with his latest find, there are those who want to discredit him, his faith and his God. The evil ones are powerful and have the ability to captivate, intimidate and seduce the weak and the greedy into service for the Enemy. With the help of a reporter and a ruthless mogul they begin a campaign to destroy the credibility of Christians everywhere. But even more exciting, we have a new series to look forward to that unapologetically offers moral and philosophical anchors --- a series that elevates both man and God and is not afraid to depict the chilling aspects of evil.

What a disappointment

I have been a fan of Tim LaHaye's for a long time now, and eagerly started reading this new Babylon Rising series. I loved the first book, the second was not nearly as meaty, and this one is even less so. It seemed it was quickly written, and very much on a surface level. And the worst part was when they did not even catch a huge error in the storyline...there was a character that almost died. They were all so happy he did not die, then all of a sudden, Micheal was talking about what a shame his death was...what is up with that?? For the price I paid, that was just unacceptable, and totally sloppy. I do not like to think money is behind the quick writing, but...hmmm... The only good parts were the stories from the Bible itself...those were great!

Babylon Stumbling (out of the gate)?

An OK read overall, but not up to par with Mr. LaHaye's other works. This series has potential, but it needs to fine tune some aspects of the writing. For example:
1) Michael Murphy, our hero, is a real Renaissance man. He's really, really, really smart; he relates well to the kids (in his Biblical archeology class); he's a wonderful husband; buff and tough enough to whup up on a big, nasty, slobbering lion; a dead-eye shot with a compound bow; and blessed with the talent of solving multiple inpenetrable mysteries buried in desert sands for 2,500 years in a single minute. Yes, this Action Hero does everything but sing like his musical namesake (we think).
Any weaknesses? Oh yeah, he's got a thing for risking his life, career and pride at the whim of the mysterious "Methuselah" to gather archeological treasures which could prove events in the Bible really happened. Fortunately, our hero's biggest challenge in the first half of the book is withstanding his Just As Smart And Independent wife's withering anti-machismo comments and first-aid treatment after besting Methuselah's challenges.
Oh yes, he doesn't shave for a few days after his wife's tragic death, and is a little ticked at God. But a quick confessional to his congregation, and he gets over it.
I like to engage my suspension of belief when I read fiction, but this was too much. Come on, the woman he intended to invest the next 50-60 years (and maybe planned a family with) is gone. It's not something you just get over -- you learn to live with it.
The elements are there -- just don't make him a superhero. Rayford Steele of the Left Behind books is a great example of a more balanced (and human) protagonist.
2) Methuselah. Mysterious dude (always in the shadows) gets his jollies by getting Murphy to fall into one of his elaborate traps. Soooo, what will he do for fun if Murphy bites the big one? Get a relative of Louis Leakey?
Well, Methuselah's Lion King bit (ha ha!) does establish Murphy as a Man Of Action, unlike that wimpy college dean. But please don't bring this character back.
3) Dean Fallworth, Unbelieving Head Weenie. I kept visualizing the college dean of the Nutty Professor movies when I read the book. Do college deans drop dimes on their professors like that on national TV?
4) Stacy, the Up And Coming News Reporter. Sells her soul (literally) to get her Big Break. Never read that cliche before...
5) Steve Barrington, the Soulless TV Mogul. Hey, just go ahead and name this guy Ted Turner already! OK, guess you can't since Jane Fonda isn't in the novel. Oh, wait, there is Stacy...
6) The lesson that teaches that Archeological Digs Really Don't Require Mountains Of Paperwork And Red Tape -- just call that pal from grad school, and you'll dig up that artifact and be on to the next pyramid in time for corn flakes! And don't forget the unlikely -- but stunning -- bookworm who speaks long-dead languages. Never know when you'll need her to rescue you from sinister zombie sacrificers.
OK, there are some very promising aspects to this book (and series).
Talon is a very scary adversary, unlike the straw man Global Community people in the Left Behind books. The falcons are an interesting touch (ouch!). A little more character development in the next book.
"Christian Terrorists" theme -- One reviewer didn't think it's plausible that the media would portray Christians in that manner. I don't believe all media would do that, but many would. I've lost count of people who claim religion -- and Christianity -- is the reason we have so much strife in the world. I could go on about how our media demonstrate how tolerant we should be of other religions but will interview anyone who tries to debunk Biblical "myths", such as the divinity of Jesus, the Flood, etc.
Archeological/historical aspects -- Very interesting and innovative premise. I remember reading about the Brazen Serpent and the Golden Head, but never thought of a possible connection between the two. Great lesson.
Other positive aspects included the pacing (a LaHaye and Dinallo trademark -- I also read Dinallo's "Final Answers"), unexpected twists and loose ends.
I look forward to the second book, but please give the central characters more dimension.

The Fall of Lucas Kendrick

I was very disappointed in this book. I resent buying a book that is a reprint without knowing that information upfront. If I wanted to pay $7.99 for a reprint that is one thing, but this was a waste of money. I thought I was getting a new Kay Hooper book. I think the fact that it is a reprint should be displayed prominently for the buyer. I will think twice before buying anymore books by this author though I have enjoyed her newer books very much. I tried to find out if it was a reprint but found nothing in the info but an October 2011 publication date and a published from the paperback comment. NOW I know that is code for it being a reprint. This is not a good business practice. It may get the quick sell, but I will be much less likely to spend my money again.

I really like Kay Hooper' series, she is a great writer. The story is not only interesting it is romantic and interpersonal the way the characters relate to each other. I do recommend her books to other people.

Short, Easy Read with Clear Characters

FINAL DECISION: I like this story mainly because the continuing characters are fun and make the story interesting. These are not the most complicated stories or characters but they are clearly defined and the good guys and the bad guys are easily distinguished.

THE STORY: Lucas Kendrick has finally been approached to take on his assignment for the secret government agency that his boss and friends have been systematically drafted into assisting. Lucas is to track down some stolen artwork by getting entrance into a house party of the suspect. The complication, however, is that his way into the party is the woman he once loved and left ten years ago. Lucas, now the chief investigator, was a police officer ten years ago and met Kyle Griffin, a college student. The two had a whirlwind romance before Lucas had to leave her. Now the two have been forced together and the heat of their old romance may burn them both.

OPINION: I am a big fan of this series of books. They are not particularly complicated or deep, but the characters are vibrant and the stories are fun and uncomplicated. This is an easy book to read and the strong characters make me want to read each of the books. This book is not my favorite of the series because I didn't find the mystery story as interesting and the conflict between Lucas and Kyle is too quickly resolved.

WORTH MENTIONING: There are appearances by other characters of the series and the next "victim" of Hagen's unintended matchmaking is set up.

CONNECTED BOOKS: THE FALL OF LUCAS KENDRICK is the fourth book in the Hagen series. It should be read as part of the series because the entirety of these books is much better than any one individual book.

STAR RATING: I give this book 4 stars.

Old school cooking with e-book convenience!

I used the paperback of this book until it totally fell apart! Having it on my whatever-reader-at-hand makes it totally convenient! (But I do miss all my spill stain memories and I have to use the Table of Contents since it doesn't just open to my most-used recipes!)

The Art of Jewish Cooking (Grossinger) has been and will always be a favorite of mine! VERY easy instructions and VERY VERY Jewish - lol. The only thing that you may want to substitute in the recipes -- the 'fat' type products (chicken fat (!) shortening) that can be easily replaced using any type of oil/healthy-type spread(s). I've used and loved the recipes and adore this book! 10 Stars ! ! ! The Art of Jewish Cooking

A great basic cookbook

This little cookbook has some great very basic recipes that I go back to again and again -- like gedempte fleisch -- it's the closest to my (fabulous cook) grandmother's old country recipe for brisket and a lot of other classics. It's got the real thing. The recipes for cucumber salads, chicken soup, tzimmeses, latkes - are excellent.

Some of the recipes are silly -- Americanizations from the 40s and 50s that must have been used in the Catskills -- but who uses all the recipes in any cookbook? They are like little glimpses of lod sepia toned photos.

I use this book often. It was the first cookbook I ever had (some boy gave the paperback to my sister when they were on a kibbutz ulpan and I inherited it).

Very weak - silly plot, paper characters, missed opportunity

I found this book very disappointing on many levels. Mr. Jeter's writing at times is very good, addictive and energetic, but at other times it seems like he's just going through the motions. This uneven writing makes this book seem like he was given a loose outline of what is supposed to happen with a checklist of character to include and that he is going through line by line stitching it together. Some of it is good, but in general, it just doesn't work.

I went into this expecting to see a continuation of the thought process Deckard was going through in DADES, this blurring of the human and replicant/android and how this reflects to the gift and beauty of life. I wanted to see what it was that made Deckard give it up and go with Rachel... and if it was worth it. I wanted to know it there was a chance Deckard was a replicant and how he would have worked through that. Was there a way to escape the 4 year life or could life be just as good within it?

Instead, we get a rambling story about convincing Deckard to hunt a "6th replicant" and go back through everything he already has, including the return of Holden and Bryant, Batty and Pris, Sebastion and his toys and that old 'chickenhead' Isidore (who has become very smart). There's a bunch of action stuck in there, much of it gratuitous and a lot of out of character with Deckard. By the end, nothing has really progressed and nothing much really changed.

Overall, this book isn't very good. The writing is uneven and the plot is silly. It just doesn't feel like the same characters or ideas that the book (DADES) and movie set up. That's a shame because there was some really good ground this could have covered - instead we get the equivalent of a straight to DVD sequel with different actors, different director, and no money for a writer. Stay away from this one.

Blade Runner 2: Outshined by the original

Being a huge fan of the movie (director's cut version) I was extremely eager to see what Jeter had done with it. Jeter's style is complicated and depressing; which is probably what he intended. The story line swerves all over the place like a snake being held by the neck and Jeter does an above average job for a sequel. Some cronic fans of the movie will be let down, however, since the original is much better due to a less complicated but deeper storyline. Blade runner is a ten out of ten classic, but Blade Runner 2 is only above average. It was a bit of a dissapointment for me. It amuses me that the sixth replicant was actually just a mixup during the making of the movie and if they had done it correctly then this book would have been a completely different story. One thing that bugged me was some of the climaxes. Most of them were over the top; for instance when Deckard escapes from the police station and the very last climax. But generally speaking, it was still a good book that was intruiging reading. I wouldn't reccomend it to anyone and definetely not to people who havent seen the movie or read the book 'Do androids dream of electric sheep?'

Seeing the Ocean for the First Time

In this series "The Voice of the Poet" America's most popular poet of the Twentieth Century, Robert Frost, reads 36 of his poems if you consider "Forgive, O Lord" a poem. Whatever it is, it is one of my favorite things that Frost ever wrote:

Forgive, O Lord, my little jokes on Thee

And I'll forgive Thy great big one on me.

J. D. McClatchy, the series editor, includes his brief bio of Frost in the booklet containing all the poems on the CD that the poet reads aloud. Much of what McClatchy recounts is known to devotees of Mr. Frost, his early success, his very difficult private life, the misunderstandings that many people have about him, his life in New England. McClatchy describes Frost as "a Puritan without a God." He says that some of the readings are as old as 1930, that Frost gave some of them in 1962 and that they are released here for the first time. If my memory serves me right, I liked the Caedmon recording of Frost's reading better LP better but I cannot offer specifics as to why.

But to the poems. If you are hearing this divine poet read for the first time, it's a little like the first time you saw the ocean. Certainly poems should be read aloud; and usually who is better qualified to read his poetry than the writer, himself? Frost's voice resonates, and you will hear it long after you have listened to the CD: "Provide, provide, one could do worst than be a swinger of birches," etc.

Frost reads many of his most beloved poems here: "Fire and Ice," "Nothing Gold Can Stay," "Birches," "The Road Not Taken," "Neither Out Far Nor In Deep" the darker poems, "Acquainted With The Night" and "Desert Places." Then there is "The Gift Outright" that Frost read from memory at the inauguration of President John Kennedy after he was unable to read the poem he had written for the occasion.

Finally Frost reads what to me is his best poem and one of the great poems of American literature, "The Death of the Hired Man." Silas, who has worked for Warren in the past, not wanted by his brother, with "nothing to look backward to with pride,/And nothing to look forward to with hope," has come back to the farm to die, "a miserable sight." The tension between the hard-nosed Warren and his kinder, gentler wife Mary is palpable. Every line of this dramatic poem is perfect. From it we get the conflicting definitions of home:

'Home is the place where, when you have to go there,

They have to take you in.'

'I should have called it

Something you haven't to deserve.'

Finally

'But, Warren, please remember how it is:

He's come to help you ditch the meadow.

He has a plan. You mustn't laugh at him.

He may not speak of it, and then he may.

I'll sit and see if that small sailing cloud

Will hit or miss the moon.'

It hit the moon.

Then there were three there, making a dim row,

The moon, the little silver cloud, and she.

Warren returned--too soon, it seemed to her,

Slipped to her side, caught her by the hand and waited.

'Warren?' she questioned.

'Dead,' was all he answered.

Poetry doesn't get a lot better than this. Frost once said that a poem should begin in delight and end in wisdom. Certainly that is true of "The Death of the Hired Man" and much of his other work as well. The reader/hearer who believes that Frost's very accessible poetry with its natural speech rhythms is simple does so at his peril. As McClatchy concludes in his notes, Frost is "ultimately a poet of loss and limitation and loneliness, of desolation and extinction." But he is indeed such a great one.

Excellent!

I love this cd - it's fabulous. In response to some of the other reviews - of course the sound quality isn't great - he died in the 1960's, and was quite old. I'm grateful someone put together this collection with the recordings they had available. I've had no trouble hearing each and every word, and was not aware that there weren't enough pauses in between the tracks.

Did he read too fast? I doubt it. The one who wrote the poetry reads it as it's supposed to be read, imho. It's fascinating to hear how it would've come out of his own head.

I highly recommend it.

An interview with Michael Koryta (The Prophet).

MICHAEL: In the new novel, Odd Apocalypse, you write that "between birth and burial, we find ourselves in a comedy of mysteries." That statement could be a guiding light for the Odd series, and perhaps even your work in general of late. Was allowing the laughs to join the darkness a conscious decision?

DEAN: Humor began to enter my work as far back as Watchers (1987), and by Lightning (1988), my agent and publisher at that time became alarmed and counseled me that suspense and humor never mix. They were not able to offer a cogent explanation of why the two never mix. One of my favorite films of all time is "North by Northwest," which is tense and funny; so I just kept doing what I was doing. By the time I moved to Bantam Books with Fear Nothing (1998), humor became the binding glue in all of my books except for The Taking, Velocity, The Husband, and Your Heart Belongs to Me.

Odd Thomas is speaking for me when he says, "Humanity is a parade of fools, and I'm right up front with a baton." Odd is a spiritual guy, and in my experience, genuinely spiritual people--as opposed to those for whom faith is either a crutch or a bludgeon--have a great sense of humor. They recognize that our fallen world is not just tragic but also absurd, often hilariously absurd, and that laughing at humanity's hubris and reckless transgressive behavior is a potent way to deny legitimacy to that hubris. Besides, if a character is able to make you laugh out loud, a bond is formed that ensures you will worry more for him when he finds himself in jeopardy. And I will always remember that it wasn't my looks or my sartorial splendor or macho toughness--ha!--that won Gerda; she says that she laughed so much on our first date, her stomach hurt the next day. That was better than being told, as I expected, that her stomach hurt because, after I took her home, she spent the night throwing up.

MICHAEL: A three-part short novel titled Odd Interlude was released in ebook-only form this summer. Tell us a little about the way this was conceived and written. Did you have that planned before the new novel or did it come to you later in Odd's journey?

DEAN: I had written a 32,000-word ebook novella, The Moonlit Mind, to intrigue readers about a forthcoming novel, 77 Shadow Street. The novella sold very well and drew strong reader response. In fact, I'm pretty sure a lot of people liked Moonlit better than 77 Shadow Street! So as I was finishing Odd Apocalypse, my publisher asked me to write a 60,000- to 70,000-word short novel in three parts to reintroduce readers to Odd. It was outside the seven-book arc of the series, and I had great fun with it. By the way, those readers who don't do ebooks tend to get exercised about a piece appearing only digitally. In order to avoid being whacked by an irate reader while waiting at the counter for my Big Mac, I am happy to tell you that Odd Interlude will be published in paperback within a few months.

MICHAEL: Rumor has it a movie of Odd Thomas is on the way, and that you're pleased with it, which is anything but the rule when it comes to adaptations. What can you tell us about the film version and why you are so pleased with Stephen Sommers' take?

DEAN: I have a glowing review of the film at deankoontz.com and on my official Facebook page. Anton Yelchin and Addison Timlim give wonderfully nuanced and affecting performances. Steve's sense of pace and his writing are even better than his previous best, and his scene transitions are amazing, something really new and highly effective. The picture drops much from the book, but at the same time it's absolutely true to the book, to its characters and its themes.

Steve is also a great guy and a family man. When he'd send me long emails about progress on the picture, he'd write also about his daughters and family things. After one such email, I wrote him back to say that he was so normal, compared to most of my Hollywood experiences, that I was getting suspicious. I said I was steeling myself to wake up one morning and discover that he'd been arrested with Charlie Sheen, crossing the border from Mexico in a school bus loaded with drugs and explosives.

I miss Pico Mundo and all of Odd's "family" there

I am an avid Dean Koontz fan and have been for many years. The Watchers, The Taking and Odd Thomas and Brother Odd have been my favorites. It must be hard for Mr Koontz to balance his own creative needs and the overwhelming cries from his fans (AND publisher, I'm sure!) for more, more, more. And his publishing of graphic novels, web episodes, etc. must take a lot of his time as well. That's the only reason I can see for Odd Apocalypse having taken so long to publish after the fourth in the series, Odd Hours. I read the Odd Interlude sessions and Odd Apocalypse on my Kindle. If you ask me details about the first book, Odd Thomas, I can wax eloquent...but I can not tell you much about Odd Apocalpyse, although I just finished it 30 minutes ago. I don't really care if Odd and Annamarie are heading toward some big "tada!" in the sky. I DO care about what's happening in Pico Mundo. To Ozzie and Sheriff Porter and the folks at the grill (and where are the bodachs???). I miss the ghosts (even the ghost dog Boo just hangs around the edges now). In the last couple of books Odd doesn't even let those people who love him back at home know that he's okay....Odd needs to FOCUS, connect back with his solid Pico Mundo roots, and quit floating around the fog of vagueness that is Annamaria.

It's a Darker Odd...

First of all, don't read this unless you've read the others in the series. Period. Have you read them? No? Go away and read them first. I might spoil something for you. This is an awesome series but you have to start at the beginning.

Everyone else read the others in the series? Good. Here goes...

This is a much darker Odd Thomas novel than the others, and the last one (Odd Hours) was pretty shadowy. This book takes place over a day at an estate in California. It's a couple days later than the events in Odd Hours, a point Odd makes a couple of times. Annamaria is back, you know the pregnant, enigmatic girl from Odd Hours. She is still enigmatic, and though she has a strong part, it's a small one. Boo, the ghost dog is also back, but he's with Annamaria most of the time.

Though this is dark, Odd still has a way with words. "...nor in the sense that a man is insane who wears a colander as a hat to keep the CIA from controlling his mind. I dislike hats of any kind, though I have nothing against colanders properly used." - page 9. Odd is sad and has had horrible things happen to him, but here's why I like him: "Yet everywhere I look, I find great beauty in this battlefield, and grace and the promise of joy." - page 15. Through the darkness and horror, Odd remains fundamentally decent and good. And that's what makes this series so good. There IS horror in Odd's life, but his attitude toward it makes it bearable, both for himself and for his readers. You want to take the journey along with Odd, no matter what turns it makes, because you care about him. There aren't a whole lot of characters I truly care about.

While the writing is good as always, this almost didn't seem like an Odd Thomas novel. It's almost like it's an aside to the longer journey that Odd is on. It almost takes place out of the timeline, which is kind of ironic once you read the novel. The people Odd cares about are either not there or barely there. Most of his interactions take place with the estate and the people who live there. There is A LOT of philosophical musing on Odd's part. More so than the other books.

I gave this 4 stars because of the writing and the character, but the story was very... well I can't think of another word to describe it than "dark", which is not normally my thing. This novel is seriously midnight without stars or moon kind of dark, but Odd is a shining beacon. I am looking forward to the conclusion (will it be 6 books or 7?) I've read all 3 graphic novels and am looking forward to the Odd Interlude Kindle shorts that are coming in June. I wish I had received an advance Kindle reading copy instead of paper because there are so many quotes I wanted to clip. And a couple of words to look up. For a fry cook, Odd has a marvelous vocabulary.

This series is highly recommended.

"Chaos half-loosed cannot be long controlled"

If half-loosed chaos is what you're looking for in an exciting summer read - this is it. Koontz latest installment of his popular Odd Thomas series, Odd Apocalypse, is one of the best. Odd has hooked up with Annamaria again, the Lady of the Bell, who talks in riddles. The couple run into Noah Wolflaw, the current owner of Roseland, an estate built in the early 20's by Constantine Cloyce as his retreat and man cave. Some say that Cloyce dabbled in the occult and from the start we see that this property holds more than meets the eye.

Odd Thomas (so named due to the dropping of the "T" from Todd on his birth certificate) and Annamaria are invited to Roseland and are housed in a stone tower located in a eucalyptus grove on the compound and told to keep the doors locked and never to venture outdoors at night. They share the dwelling with a living Golden Retriever and Boo, the white German-shepherd ghost dog who has befriended Odd in previous novels. Odd, you must understand, can see the dead. On one of his illicit forays into the night he meets a spectral woman in white astride a black stallion who points down at him with a message about a young son she left behind.

Odd further explores the grounds finding weird lazy eights, made of copper, embedded in the mausoleum, the stable and atop the fortress-like stone wall that surrounds the compound. He meets the cast of characters who dwell in one capacity or another at the estate. Aside from the current owner we meet Chef Shilshom the corpulent cook who aside from being a gifted kitchen pundit demonstrations his main talent is "not" answering questions in a very evasive manner. In the immaculate stables with their stained glass lazy eight décor and strange out of sync time continuum, Odd meets gigantic Jack Keister, who may or may not be a property guard. At first meeting Jack abruptly leaves the barn like the White Rabbit of Alice fame repeating the words "late, late, late".

There is Henry Lolam, the poetry reading Ufologist who mans the guard shack and Paulie Sempiterno, the chief of Roseland security who roams the property in his pimped up golf cart. All of Koontz's characters in the tale are well written, interesting and keep the story moving along at a jack rabbit pace. Odd's interactions with each personality gives Dean a chance to weave his words in that now famous and charming Koontz way. I often have to stop reading and just smile at the way he's comically turnes a phrase.

Roseland, as an estate, is described as "No place in my experience has ever been more beautiful....and no place has ever felt so evil". In Odd Apocalypse our hero is put in the difficult position of acting on the appeal of Annamaria, seeming more and more like an old soul, who tells him "there's someone here who's in great danger and desperately needs you..." or heeding the warnings from everyone else to leave. The others also bestow curious advice such as "look for death if you want to live". Odd suspects that he might have to "save the nameless someone with time pouring away like sand from a fractured hourglass".

This is the best Odd Thomas novel in a while and I think it can stand alone and be read out of the framework of the others in the series. But, hey, read them too. They're fun.
