Chapter One

Your Head


If you are one of the millions of Americans prone to being sidelined by crippling headaches, it's time for a change. Although most people think that headaches are a normal and inevitable result of stress, headaches need not be the norm for you. I have a number of quick treatment options that have made most of my patients' stress-related headaches disappear fast—and they can do the same for you.

Using the simple techniques in this book, you will be able to take control and relieve headaches once you feel their symptoms coming on. There's no need to wait thirty minutes for an over-the-counter medication to kick in when you can get Instant Relief without any medication at all.

My techniques work because they are based on an understanding of the way stress affects the muscles that support the head, causing mechanical headaches. When you're under stress, you tend to tighten the muscles in the neck, skull, and face. These tight muscles can cause both vascular compression and nerve compression. Vascular compression means that blood vessels are being squeezed and can't deliver adequate oxygen to cells. Nerve compression results in less-than-optimum electrical-impulse delivery to muscles and inhibits muscular function.

Emotional stress, however, is not the only reason for mechanical headaches. The tight muscles that lead to so-called "mechanical headaches" also occur when you spend too long a time in a posture that forces your head out of what we call its neutral position. In the neutral position the head sits directly atop the neck in an alignment of relaxed verticality, which follows the gentle S shape of the entire spine with its curves at the neck, upper back, and lower back. If it remains in this position, the head will be well supported by all the vertebrae immediately below it—the vertebrae of the neck (the cervical spine) and the upper back (the thoracic spine), as well as the lumbar and sacral vertebrae—and also by the muscles and ligaments that connect to these vertebrae. The head needs all the support it can get, because it weighs between ten and twelve pounds—the weight of a bowling ball.

Unfortunately, your head is likely to spend much of its time without adequate support, because you put it into postures that take it out of neutral. If you spend a lot of time on the phone, for example, with your head tilted to hold the phone between your ear and your shoulder ("phone hugging"), you're forcing your head out of neutral position. If you spend a lot of time with your head in a protruded position, with the ears far forward of the shoulders—a position assumed by millions of people every day as they stare at their computer screens or bend over their paperwork—the head doesn't get the support it needs. Any posture that takes your head out of neutral position for an extended period of time has the potential to cause a headache because of the muscle tightening that results, and the vascular and nerve compression that result from muscle tightening.

There's another kind of nerve compression that can also result in a headache. Several of the twelve cranial nerves, which originate in the brain and are responsible for many functions, including the special senses of sight, hearing, smelling, and taste, pass through small openings at the base of the skull. If those nerves get compressed because of deviations in the head's normal position, they too can cause headaches.

Relieving your headache, however, may not be as simple as returning your head to its neutral position. If the head has remained in a protruded position for an extended period of time, bringing it back to neutral can stretch tight tissues, which leads to that common achiness in the back of the head, or above the ear or the eye on one side of the head. Even the scalp can become tense and cause discomfort. That's why I've provided a Brill exercise called a Scalp Glide (Exercise 7), which releases scalp tension.

Headaches are not the only problem to result from poor alignment. It can potentially cause long-term damage, too, because when the head spends much of its time in a protruded position, you are creating a situation that is like adding a hundred pounds of force on the vertebrae that support the head. This force compresses the disks between the vertebrae of the lower neck, causing particular wear and tear on the topmost vertebra (the atlas). If you don't balance these distortions of the head's natural alignment with movements in the opposite direction, you may experience early degeneration of the spine. Doing the Brill exercises will help prevent long-term damage.

The major focus of the Brill exercises, however, is on immediate pain relief. Most of the exercises I suggest for headaches emphasize sustaining a position that stretches the muscles of the upper neck and balances the out-of-neutral postures in which we spend so much of our time. By relieving compression in the upper neck, they help restore maximum blood flow and nerve function, which I've found to be the most effective way to relieve headaches quickly. But sometimes that kind of stretching doesn't work, and you're more likely to get relief if you tighten the already-tight muscles even more, holding your head in the extreme protruded position until the muscles finally relax. (See Exercise 12, Prone Neck Protrusion/Retraction, which does both.) It seems illogical, but it can be quite effective.

So try the Brill exercises, and see which ones work best for you. Don't let a headache overtake you—knock it out fast, and get on with your life.

Instant Relief for a Tension Headache

If, like so many millions of people, you clench your teeth or scowl when you're under stress, you probably get tension headaches, and you may feel pain or tightness in your jaw as well.

Here are several fast exercises that can relax the clenching and scowling motion and can be done whether you are sitting, standing, or lying down. Other exercises in this chapter work directly on the muscles of the eyes, the scalp, and the sinuses, another source of headache.

3. Tongue Press

The jaw, which works like a hinge, is able to open and close thanks to the muscles of the jaw. These muscles attach to the sides of the upper vertebrae in the neck, which are located just behind the ears. When those muscles become imbalanced—from sleeping on one side or from an altered bite, which could be caused by a broken crown, an unevenly filled tooth, teeth grinding, or even nail biting—you'll feel the impact in your jaw.

This nifty movement helps the jaw muscles by employing the tongue as a spring to align the hinges of the jaw so that they open and close normally, thus retraining the muscles to work symmetrically.

* Sit or stand up straight with your head facing forward, or lie on your back with your face toward the ceiling.

* Relax your jaw and mouth.

* Push the tip of your tongue against the roof of your mouth behind your upper teeth.

* Open and close your mouth, with your tongue against the roof of your mouth, ten times.

4. Ear Tug

You might find it hard to believe, but this movement eases a tense jaw by elongating tissues that tend to get tight and tense where the ear meets the neck. From the back of the neck to the front, this "tug" relaxes muscles. It also relieves pressure in the inner ear caused by grinding teeth or clenching a jaw. If your ears feel "full" when you fly, doing this tug will decompress the pressure in your ears.

* Sit or stand up straight with your head facing forward, or lie on your back with your face toward the ceiling.

* Grasp your earlobes with your index fingers just inside the ears and your thumbs just behind.

* Gently pull your ears down and out, and hold them for a count of ten.

5. Cheek Release

If you grind your teeth or are prone to sinus headaches or jaw tension, doing this movement will relax the buccinator muscles, the sucking muscles in your cheeks, which keep the food between your teeth as you chew. As you do it, you may be reminded of that "face" you made behind someone's back when you were in school. But now you can put it to more practical use.

* Sit or stand up straight with your head facing forward, or lie on your back with your face toward the ceiling.

* Place your index fingers inside your cheeks.

* Gently pull your cheeks outward without straining your lips, and take a deep breath. Slowly exhale as you silently count to ten.

6. Tongue Loop

If your voice cracks and lowers when you get nervous, try this exercise, which rebalances the muscles attached to the tongue, as well as the muscles in the front of the neck that support the tongue and therefore affect how you speak.

When you do this Brill exercise the first time, you might find that it's easier to do in one direction. That is a sure sign that the length and strength of the muscles on either side of the neck and the tongue are out of balance.

* Sit or stand up straight with your head facing forward, or lie on your back with your face toward the ceiling.

* Stick out your tongue.

* Rotate your tongue slowly around your lips five times in one direction and then five times in the other direction.

7. Scalp Glide

Here's a way to release tension in the connective tissue between muscles in the front and back of your scalp. When you frown, muscles in the back of your scalp tense. Doing this gliding motion stretches the muscles that extend from the forehead up into the scalp as well as those that extend from the back of the head up into the scalp.

* Sit or stand up straight with your head facing forward, or lie on your back with your face toward the ceiling.

* Place your palms at the top of your forehead with fingers touching the scalp on either side.

* Glide the flesh of your scalp back and forth over your skull with your hands. Repeat ten times.

I have been into physical fitness and doing rugged workout programs all my life. Even at my advanced age I still workout hard (doing the Tabata Program) six days a week. With age many more aches and pains seem to part of growing old and I am always seeking ideas to relieve some of these nagging issues. I recently purchased this wonderful and unique 221 page paperback (Instant Relief: Tell me where it hurts and I’ll tell you what to do by Peggy W. Brill) book and found numerous practical and effective exercises to relieve pain in various parts of the body.

The advice sections combined with illustrations are easy to follow and practice. The program is simple and does not take long. In each of these exercises you either do them ten times or hold for 10 seconds. This wonderful book is organized into 11 chapters covering a wide range of specific exercise movements for your head, your neck, your shoulders, your elbows, your hands, your lower back, your hips, your knees, your calves, and your feet. It shows the exercises standing, sitting and lying down.

Even though I was familiar with many of the exercises because I personally do more than 100 stretching/yoga movements in my workout program; nevertheless, I found this book a fantastic reference source for relieving pain.

Brilliant ! Must read for fans of quality murder mysteries.

Nava has done it again. Beginning with his first work, The Little Death, Michael Nava has given us complex, compelling stories. Henry Rios finds himeself being lied to on all sides as he is pulled into this dark tale about the way LaLa Land really works. My only regret is that Mr. Nava is not too likely to get a movie option on this great work; it paints an all too accurate picture of the sins of Hollywood and the media.

Probably the best of the Henry Rios series

Gay Mexican-American lawyer Henry Rios is still dealing with his longtime partner dying of AIDS. One night he hooks up with a prostitute who is discovered murdered the next day. Rios didn't do it but he's under suspicion. Then two more gay men are brutally murdered and the police will do ANYTHING to convict Rios of the murders.

Arguably the best of the Henry Rios series. It's also one of the longest--305 pages. Like all the others it's beautifully written. Writer Michael Nava moves the story along quickly with many twists and turns you won't see coming. You think you have it all figured out towards the end but then Nava excpertly pulls out the rug from under you. The book IS brutal. The bodies of the murdered victims are described in graphic detail and it spares no one. The fate of one of the minor characters is especially harrowing. However there are some touches of funny (if black) humor that lighten the books. Still it's a strong book. Recommended but only if you can handle explicit details.

The proverbial "page-turner"

First of all, I have never particularly been a mystery fan (well... okay, I admit I watched "Murder She Wrote" while I ironed. It was great because I didn't really have to pay very much attention to it -- the program that is, not the ironing... I haven't ironed since it was cancelled, by the way). So why did I pick up this particular book? Although I wasn't specifically looking for a mystery, I DID want something with gay men and women... and this looked interesting...
Interesting. Hmph. I could barely put it down. This was one of those books for me that I a) wanted to take my time reading because I couldn't imagine not having anymore to read and b) wanted to read as quickly as possible to see what happens next. Hard to do both at the same time...
Although I enjoyed the mystery itself, the far more enjoyable mystery is what is going to happen next to the people you've been introduced to. People and personalities change before our eyes, sometimes a sincere change reacting to what's going on around them; sometimes as a result of our finding out the truth about them.
What I appreciate most, I think, is the absolute correct amount of description. Many authors go one way or the other -- they either take you into a room and give you five tedious pages of description, or throw you in without any sense of where and when you are. Mr. Nava gave me just enough to put together a picture of people and places, without forcing me to skip 5 paragraphs just describing someone's eyes.
As a matter of fact, I have only ONE beef with this book... I live in Los Angeles, and I (and my partner) were shocked at the slap at the French Market. Sorry, Michael, but we LIKE the food there!

Christopher Golden is the award-winning, L.A. Times bestselling author of such novels as The Ferryman, Strangewood, The Gathering Dark, Of Saints and Shadows, Prowlers, and The Body of Evidence series of teen thrillers. Creative and Hard to Put Down

I discovered this great new author and series quite by accident--picked up a copy of The Lost Ones and then realized it was the third book in a series. Reading the blurb on the back got me intrigued, so I ordered the first two books from Amazon. BorderKind is the second in the series, and continues the story of a man and woman trapped on the other side of the Veil--the magical barrier between our mundane world and the world of Legends and Magical Beings. There they encounter such notables as Jack Frost (who does quite a bit more than nip at their toes), Jenny Greenteeth, a Japanese foxwoman, and just about every legend or fairy-tale creature you have ever heard of in your bedtime stories. Christopher Golden weaves a great tale that is far less predictable than it might seem. Well worth the read!

Good 2nd book...could be more focused

My big concern with book 3 is that Mr. Golden is spending too much time focusing on characters I simply don't care about - without giving away spoilers, I skip over all the sections involving the detective's daughter, and just don't care all that much about our Oliver's fiancee. What I want to read more of is Oliver, Kit and "the winter man", who is a great character. I hope more emphasis is placed on them, and would love Oliver and Kit to end up together :)
Overall, I love the ideas Mr. Golden has put in place, the creativity with bringing these mythological characters to the forefront, and the politics and battles that ensuet...similar to his other book, Strangewood, but with a bigger scope. Eagerly awaiting Book 3 and hope it's an epic battle that is more tightly focused on the more interesting characters.

superb dark fantasy

He was suffering from cold feet the night before his marriage when Jack Frost busted into his Maine home pleading with him to save his life. Stunned lawyer Oliver Bascomb crosses the veil into the Two-Kingdoms where he finds a magical sword (see THE MYTH HUNTERS).

When he returns to the earthly realm he learns of the murder of his father and more important the abduction of his sister Collette held prisoner by the lethal Sandman. He vows to rescue his sibling and avenge his dad, but is unaware that he is the prime suspect. Meanwhile his jilted fiancée Julianna Whitney, still believes in his goodness and that he did not kill his father or the other corpses haunting Oliver's every step though the evidence speaks otherwise. She teams up with homicide detective Ted Halliwell to track down Oliver.

Christopher Golden is going to strike gold with this superior dark fantasy sequel that can stand on its own but is enhanced by reading the equally superb first tale. The story line is action-packed and stars a real American hero and a strong support cast from both sides of the veil. However, the key to this delightful saga is the belief that the Two Kingdoms and its fantasy creatures are not just plausible they are real.

Sabini passes his polygraph test but later is also found dead in an alley, with Ken's phone number on him. Under suspicion for both killings, Ken is now suspicious of Myth. Enter Hound Dog, a 21-year-old woman whose obsession is getting information from a police scanner to find crime scenes to photograph; she delivers some bad news to Ken about Myth's past. Trying to clear his name, Ken stumbles across another murder, an attack on Hound Dog's boyfriend and a suspect who turns out to be Ken's still-beloved ex-wife. The offbeat narrative of Johansen's debut races cleanly through a maze of techno clues and multiple suspects, pulling readers along for a quirky ride with likable companions. Most notable of these is Ken, a classic amateur thriller hero who suffers endless humiliations while solving just enough of the puzzle to put everyone in grave danger when he guesses wrong. He deserves a sequel, and this novel's bittersweet finale gives strong hope of that.

Screenwriter Johansen (Edgar Awardwinner for Murder 101 on cable TV) tries his hand at the thriller and comes up with aces. Ken Parker, 34, administers polygraph tests in Atlantabut hates his job. Not everything else is so great, either. He has just paid off $140,000 in medical debt for his late father; his brother Bobby is laid up with a Gulf War disease; and he sees a girlfriend every week or two. So busy is he, says his running buddy and ex-wife Margot, taking care of everyone else, that he forgets to take care of himself. Then one day Myth Daniels, a woman attorney, induces him into her parlor to meet the accused man Burton Sabini, whos about to take a polygraph test that will either get him off scot- free or put him in prison. Insisting that he's innocent, he offers Ken $50,000 to train him to beat the polygraph. At first Ken says no, but then the VA invalidates payment for brother Bobbys diagnostic tests, the repo man gets his Mustang, and an eviction notice hits his office door. Ken takes the job. Meanwhile, Carlos, who lost his own job because of Ken's report on him, gives him a vicious working overand then afterward is murdered. Sabini's ex-boss, Herbert Decker, threatens him and wants the $12 million back that he thinks Sabini embezzled from his company. Amidst all this, Ken has 12 days to train Sabiniand succeeds: Sabini passes the test, and Myth throws Ken a lovebolt as reward. The trouble is, Sabini, who's supposed to pay Ken the money for his work, is stabbed to death first. Kens only way out of the hole is to find the missing money that Sabini clearly stole. Where's the $12 mill? One violent act follows another, including the torching of Ken's office. Fiction newcomer Johansen plots like a string of firecrackers. The question is why...

Contrary to one reviewer's comment that techniques to beat a lie detector were revealed in this book, they weren't. Which is a shame because then it might have been worth reading. I managed to drag myself to page 185 where my interest finally died. It wasn't an unexpected death, however; it had been bed-ridden for some time.
It's rare to come across such two-dimensional characters in a multiple-star book. I had to keep reminding myself what good old Ken's name was and "Ken" is just not that hard.
I tend to read in cycles and I've been in my mystery period for a few months now. If you must read "The Answer Man" (which provides no answer to the question of why so many reviewers found it interesting), I would suggest you do so after you've exhausted Robert Crais (all of the Elvis Cole books in order), Dennis Lehane (all five Patrick Kenzie books in order), Michael Connelly's "Void Moon" (and perhaps his others, which I haven't read yet), Robert Ferrigno's "Heartbreaker" and perhaps all of the Janet Evanovich and Lee Child books.
"The Answer Man" was written by a screenwriter and this is a straight-to-video effort.

More Run-a-tha-milla than Thriller

This is a thriller based on a protagonist who works as a polygraph technician. I listened to this on audio - the narrator, George Wilson (good ol' Mr. Wilson?) got me through it, but I have to say the book itself is unremarkable in the extreme. I see some characters that have been fleshed to about the one paragraph level; a plot-line of unlikely events, and a very unsatisfying finale bundled together with the thinnest of prose string. The characters never came to life for me, and thus I never really cared about them. The most inventive and likeable character was a side-line, and most of the others were cookie-cut from your standard, run-of-the-mill thriller. (Does that make this "Run-of-the-Thrill" read? (heh))The jaded, slightly overweight PI, the greedy out-of-control businessman, ex wife, attractive power-hungry lawyer - and you know what? None of them stayed in character well enough to build any sort of rapport with the reader. They don't react like real people, the actions of police, characters, FBI, and even the criminals seem to build one way, then lunge in all sorts of others haphazardly. No resolution for the protagonist...not really. Other reviewers tout this as cinematic, but I dont' see that at all. Many of the action scenes are implausible and don't even work when thought out carefully - this would make a lousy movie as written. I doubt I'll pick up another Johansen novel unless there is absolutely nothing else available.

Exhilerating look at white collar crime

THE ANSWER MAN is a lie detector operator who administers the test and interprets the results. Ken Parker hates his job because he knows his findings can ruin lives. Being broke with high medical bills caused by his brother's illness leaves Ken with no choice, but to continue with his present job. When a defense attorney offers Ken $50,000 to teach her client how to cheat on the test, he accepts.
Vickers Industry accuses their former employee Ms. Saboni of embezzling $12 million from the firm. He swears he never took any money and Ken insures she "passes" the test. However, he only collects $10,000 and decides to collect the rest plus interest from the missing money. Ken soon finds himself in an avaricious world where one misstep could lead to death.
THE ANSWER MAN carefully scrutinizes corporate espionage and its impact on a wide range of individuals, which provides readers a lucid look into white-collar crime. The engaging Ken is a decent person, struggling between personal ethics and pending bankruptcy. The audience will want more appearances from this likable antihero.

In the third book of the trilogy Ms Fallon finally harvests what she seeded in the previous books: her world and characters outlined to the detail, she is now able to build a good exciting plot, with lot of action and many interesting twists. This last book is quite hard to put down.

Dirk, the main character, is now interesting, lovable; Marqel and Tia, who previously seemed rather lunatic and unbelievable, finally act consistently. On the other hand Ms Fallon loses grasp of the two main villains: one dies and the other becomes pale and vague.

The writing is neat, always to the point, with lot of humour and a bit of slang as if the author finally had relaxed a little. No masterpiece is to be expected but a bit of solid reading.

The series finale is solid if a little abrupt. Fallon left few if any unanswered questions. The series was not as complex as terry goodkind or robert jordan--but all in all a good read with enough twists and turns to keep it interesting.

One of the best trilogies I've read. A great story with great ending. It's hard to find someone who can end a trilogy just right. Jennifer Falllon does it perfectly. Really enjoyed the read.

WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU COMPLETELY LOST YOUR HEART TO A BOOK? Well, look no further. Diana Gabaldon has created the ultimate escape in Outlander. Don't let the 850 pages dissuade you. It's the fastest read you'll ever have.

The epic tale begins when Claire Randall, a young combat nurse in World War II, moves to Scotland with her beloved husband to reignite their marriage interrupted by the war. Hiking one day, Claire accidentally passes through the stones of an ancient stone circle and wakes up to find herself in 18th century Scotland. Lost, alone, and confused (yet determined), Claire's path crosses, and is inextricably linked to, a young Highland warrior... James Fraser. (The kind of man women want, and men want to BE.) The story that ensues would make Shakespeare proud-- danger, suspense, passion, betrayal, true love and tragedy. Gabaldon is a master storyteller. She shrouds her fantasy in just enough reality as to completely seduce her readers.

The time travel element as well as the romance, while unconventional for a "serious" historical novel, are handled brilliantly by Gabaldon. That said, this book is not for the faint of heart as the author tackles themes of a violent and sexual nature. However, the story is so realistic and beautifully told that it doesn't come off as a ploy to shock readers. Well-crafted and meticulously researched, Outlander is historical fiction at its finest... and so much fun! The hero and heroine come alive. You'll find yourself living and breathing in their world, anxiously devouring each chapter.

WARNING: have the next three books in the series handy. Once you turn the last page of Outlander, you won't want to return to the 21st century. I couldn't get to the bookstore fast enough. And, Gabaldon does not disappoint...

It's all in the details

I finished The Fiery Cross a couple of days ago, and while it's not my favorite of the series (nothing beats the first one), I enjoyed it thoroughly. Diana Gabaldon has taken us back once again to the eighteenth century and revealed it to us in glorious detail. I can't think of a better way to spend an afternoon than with Jamie and Claire Fraser. I also appreciated this book greatly as a further deepening of Roger and Brianna's story. In the previous books, Bree wasn't really an interesting character to me - but here her character is fleshed out considerably. Likewise Roger - although his character was well-developed before this book, he endures hardships here that test his self-image and strength of character. And of course, Claire and Jamie are the same wonderful characters as ever - you really see here how their love has developed over the years.
I understand the complaints of some that this book doesn't have a plot, that it moves too slowly, etc. Those are valid points to make - there's nothing really earth-shattering that happens in this installment, although you know that something (the Revolution) is looming just beyond the horizon. For me, though, the beauty of the book was in the details - the very fact that this is for the most part a book about everyday life. More than in any of the rest of the books, Diana revels in these details. While some may find all this detail "boring," it allows us to really understand what life was like in the past, and it fleshes out all of the characters immeasurably. I closed the book feeling satisfied and yet craving more - I can't wait to find out how the entire saga ends! The Fiery Cross is a book for true fans who love these characters.

Beautifully written

Before anyone is discouraged by the negative reviews here, I hope they will read this one.
I don't understand when someone says nothing happens in this book. Granted, the action is subtle in the form of politics and intrigue, however it is still there. We finally get to see the everyday life of these wonderful people as they try to find a place to call their own. They have spent so much of their lives running from one thing to another, not really having a home that this is refreshing. People adore these books because of Diana's amazing ability of bringing characters to life, yet bash this book for the same reasons. When you nurse and have small children, bodily functions are something you have to deal with. One of the most humourous sections is Roger and Bree dealing with potty training Jemmy.
There is plenty of action, political intrigue and drama. We travel with Jamie and the militia, find some new characters, deal with almost losing not just one but two of the major characters and see the return of another. Some loose ends are tied up (wondering about the Tory gold and just who was Otter Tooth?), some are still hanging and new ones pop up (who was that with Laoghaire in the arbor and what about Claire's nighttime visitor?). The action is there if you care to read it.
It's true this book was split in two, Ms. Gabaldon didn't get as far as she would have liked with it, but it is a wonderful book all the same. I finished it in 2 days and had to reread it almost immediately. It is a slower starting novel than previously, something like Dragonfly in Amber, but still filled with the characters I have grown to love. Read it, you won't be disappointed.

The way I saw it--and probably would 'til the day I died--was that both times the rug was pulled out from underneath my boots, it was somehow because of that whelp. Not even the whoreson who usually gave me all my trouble. It was the brother of the whoreson who usually gave me all my trouble.

I'd never asked to be anybody's pen pal, since I'd never been much for writing letters in the first place and all the people I'd ever cared to know lived in the same city as I did. The end of the war had fractured some things though, sent little pieces skittering all over, and one of those pieces just happened to have a brother with a real sick sense of humor, at least by my understanding.

Dear Adamo, the letter began--no Chief Sergeant or nothing, which was technically correct, but seemed oddly personal to me.



It is my sincerest wish that this letter finds you well, that its contents are not despoiled before you've had a chance to read them, and most of all that this information doesn't bring you trouble.

I will jump straight to the sticking point and hope that you can forgive me: While in the desert, Rook and I very nearly saw the resurrection of a dragon. Havemercy, specifically. A pair of magicians from Xi'an had pieced her together from old, found parts and somehow managed to get a hold on her soul as well. Please don't mistake me for a philosopher; the soul is a device both magical and mechanical, with the essence of a powerful magician inside to give the creation life. These men had planned on using a woman to house the dragon's soul--a decidedly unmechanical vessel, but one that perhaps seemed easier to control. I tell you all this because Rook and I were not alone when we made this discovery. There was an agent of the Esar present, and what she learned she has no doubt already passed on to her master.

I know that the Esar is a secretive man, one who guards his possessions jealously. In light of that, I considered the possibility that he might never share this story with you and thus felt dutybound to impart it myself. The dragons belonged to more than just one man, however powerful that man might be.

I have no counsel for what you might do with this information, my own strengths lying largely in the theoretical and analytical fields. I merely felt that it was the right thing to pass it along and hope that you do not find yourself too at odds with my assumption.



That was it--the vital parts anyway. I'd squeezed out a lot of the hand-wringing that came afterward and there were three more long paragraphs all about how Rook had taken to the desert like a camel and nearly became prince of the nomads, but that wasn't the shit that was going to get me arrested.

He'd wrapped up the whole thing with Best wishes. After crafting a letter that read like Thom was putting every ounce of that enormous brain into getting me arrested, he ended it with "best wishes."

I'd met some cracked little teacups in my time, but he had to be the absolute worst.

"So the thrust of the matter," I concluded, myself, "is he says you need a living, breathing human being to bind their soul to, and he thinks the ethical implications of something like that would be devastating. Not just for Volstov, but for everywhere else." I reached for the letter to get the proper phrase, the one he'd used that'd made me laugh out my breakfast, although it wasn't for pure humor. "Oh, yeah. 'Just devastating.' He feels compelled, because of our time together, y'see, and because of his brother being 'one of us,' to make sure I'm aware of a situation that, as far as I'm concerned, could probably take my head off my body a damned sight easier than flying."

And that, as anybody knew, was dangerous enough. Commanding the members of the Dragon Corps from Proudmouth's back wasn't exactly the job a sane soldier volunteered for, was it? Even if the truth was I'd never really volunteered for it in the first place--I was just a whole lot better than most people at holding back all the shit I wanted to say when somebody more important was doling out the steaming heaps.

Bitter, my good friend Royston might've called it, but it wasn't really that. It was just practical thinking. My theory was, the less you got involved, the less chance there was of someone important taking exception to your head and the way it sat on your shoulders.

Which was why I didn't appreciate getting this crazy letter from a man I already knew thought more of the ethical implications of something than he did of the personal ones. In other words, me holding this letter, getting it over breakfast and breaking the seal and reading it with my buttered rolls, would've had more implications in th'Esar's eyes than just ethical ones.

Sometimes, a man just didn't want to know.

And that was kind of the tactic I was taking right now. Because in that letter, the words that loudmouthed, proudarsed, crazyeyed ex-airman Rook's damn strange little brother had used--such as "resurrection" and "soul" and "breathing new life"--sounded a lot to me like playing at things I wasn't meant to play at. More often than not, I gave my hand away at cards.

"So, I burn it," I said, with only a hint of uncertainty. I didn't want to be the man who went to his friends asking for advice with his mind already made up. No man was ever more of a burr in the arse than that one, and I wasn't going to be him. Not even in my old age.

Across from me, Royston took a neat little sip of his coffee. Then he reached up to smooth the two, maybe three, gray hairs growing at his left temple--the ones no one would notice if he wasn't so damn self-conscious about them. After all, he was considerably less advanced into his forties than myself. In fact, I thought it was downright rude of him to remind me.

"Well, it is a conundrum," he said finally.

He was doing it to needle me, I told myself, but years of getting used to the behavior never quite meant you became master at dealing with it. I snorted, just giving him the rise he wanted, not to mention buying him extra time to think up a more clever response, then handed it over.

"Well," I said, filling up the air. I hated to watch people read things, and Roy knew it.

"Reading," Roy replied quietly, with that distant air he only got when he was putting his mind to something complicated, or talking about his boy.

Now that was a mess of worms, I told myself--a can of them that'd already been opened--and to avoid hurting certain feelings I had to throw myself into the task of teasing Roy every chance I got, just so he'd know how I felt about the matter. But it'd probably take a few years before I'd be comfortable sitting in the same room with the two of them. Pointing out that a man was still a baby was no fun when that man was in the room, if only because teasing babies just wasn't right no matter who you were doing it for.

Those thoughts seemed to occupy enough time that Roy finally cleared his throat, tossing the letter down between our coffee cups. I eyed it unhappily, this simpleenoughlooking thing that I knew wasn't going to prove simple for me--at least not now that I knew about it.

I wasn't the sort of man who could just sit on information. I'd been bred to act, and all this sitting around and hemming and hawing was starting to chafe at my very last nerve. Wouldn't've expected it to be the quiet that got me in the end either, but the world was a strange place.

"I'll look into it," Roy said.

"Somehow, I knew that'd be your answer." I sighed. "But with a nose that large, I suppose you can't help poking it into things."

"Darkmooded as you are, it isn't anything yet," Roy continued, too distracted by his thoughts to let the teasing get to him. This wasn't a normal coffee we were having, and for whatever reasons that made me even more clenchjawed. There was no way I wasn't going to tear into some poor, hopeful tactician in my afternoon lecture that day, and be hearing about it from the wealthy parents a few days afterward. Couldn't I please be easier on their precious offspring? The lecture room wasn't part of the Airman, as far as they could tell.

And, the worst one: This isn't wartime anymore, you know.

Not that I was against the war being over--not even when it was all I'd ever known, which meant I knew a whole lot more about it than the sapeyed creatures who shuffled into the room and daydreamed about their ponies back in the country while I tried to impress upon them the importance of strategy, or coax some milk of inspiration out of them in return for all the milk they'd sucked from the world, probably right up until the moment they were sent away to 'Versity. Maybe they missed it now. Maybe if I bottled some and gave them all nap times and dollies, they'd be more inclined to think about what the differences would be between an airstrike and a land strike.

And Brothers and Sisters of Regina help them if one of them ever questioned the real importance of discussing airstrikes again, since wasn't that a moot point these days anyway?

Nothing in war or the possibility of war--and definitely not during the preparation for war--was a moot point. I'd drum it into their skulls yet, and if not me, then some future generation of real war drums. Not exactly comforting, but it was a salary and I hadn't been fired yet--no matter how much some parents objected to the shouting.

"Oh, it's something," I muttered. "You mind hanging on to it?"

"You're acting uncharacteristically suspicious," Roy told me, which was true.

"Boy who wrote that's the opposite of any goodluck charm I've ever had," I explained, backward country as it sounded. "Some men carry around a rabbit's foot or a lock of their true love's hair or what have yous. Well, the way I figure it is, I'm not carrying around anything he touched."

"You know what this means?" Roy said.

I shrugged.

"It means if I'm caught with this information on me before I-before we--decide what to do with it, the Esar will be very, very displeased." This was just one more reason that sending all these words in a letter was more than just bad luck: it was suicidal stupidity. "He already doesn't like me, though I'm sure his feelings about you are much more complicated. I might even be exiled again. Once is painful enough; twice just seems excessive, don't you agree?"

"Well, look on the bright side, anyway," I replied. "Maybe you'll find yourself another . . ."

"One of these days, Owen," Roy told me, in a tone I really didn't like, "you're going to find yourself falling in love. And I can only hope it will be the most outlandish--the most wildly inappropriate--coupling that Thremedon has ever seen."

"Considering that rumor with Margrave Holt and his greyhounds--" I began.

"I think you need a good walk to clear your head," Royston suggested. "And, for that matter, so do I."

I wasn't inclined to take Roy's advice any more often than I had to. Listening to a man like him when he told you what was best for you would only give him the hot air he required to fill his own head. And as much as I teased him about his nose--great honking detail that it was--the size of his head as it was remained quite tolerable. For the time being, in any case.

But he was right about the walk, as he was right about so many other things that he had no business knowing, let alone sharing.

That was the problem with old friends--and magicians, to boot. Putting both attributes in the same man was like committing yourself to a life sentence, though I'd never actually give him the satisfaction of acknowledging that.

The point was, I did need a good walk to clear my head. And I intended to take it, but I needed some time on my own--if Roy would allow it. Which he usually didn't.

"Along the 'Versity Stretch perhaps?" Royston suggested, already out of his chair and straightening his waistcoat--some gold and black brocade fashion that looked like it cost about as much as the entire coffee shop. I'd seen everyone wearing the sort recently, leave it to Royston to lead the trend. "You might become inspired for your next lecture."

"Head's not gonna get much clearer if you come along," I pointed out, dropping a few coins on the table for politeness's sake. "When you talk, I can't hear myself think."

"Who said I expected you to be able to?" Royston asked.

"Oh, I don't know," I said, putting on my coat. "Little someone by the name of Mistress Common Courtesy?"

"I can assure you that were I ever to take a mistress, it would not be her," Royston said, tying his scarf in a fussy kind of knot before heading for the door.

Wind hit us both square in the face, cold as frozen steel and just about as sharp when we stepped out into the street. Just like always, my muscles tensed all over--though not from the cold, because who would I be if I couldn't handle a little of that? No, it was more like the memory of what wind on my face had meant once and how hard it was to teach your brain something once the rest of you'd gone and figured it out already. All I had was my two boots firmly on the ground, and they weren't going anywhere but down the road. Maybe toward the Rue around where they'd erected those fool statues of me and the boys.

Small miracle no one'd knocked a piece off or written anything vulgar on 'em yet, but that'd come with time. Hell, if some of the boys had been boys still and not just statues, they'd probably have done it themselves--or at least the ones that could write, with messages to each other about the night before, what kinds of women they'd been with and fancied themselves to have pleasured, sharing it so all Thremedon could know just the sort of men they were looking up to.

But I had to steer clear of those would'vebeens, else it'd be another lane I was walking down.

Another winner from the authors

INTRODUCTION: After taking a bit of a gamble in following "Havemercy" with "Shadow Magic" that kept the four narrator structure but changed all narrators, the location from Volstov to Ke Han, the theme from metal dragons and war to diplomacy and treachery and alternated the perspective of the "good guys" from the series debut with the one of their long time enemies, in the third series book Dragon Soul the authors returned to the magical dragons and the odd duo of Thom and Rook while expanding the universe to a desert scape and its people, as well as continuing to diversify the cast to include a Volkov magician and a Ke-Han treasure hunter who also were the first female narrators of the series.

Steelhands picks up where Dragon Soul ends but it returns to Volstov's capital, its main college - the Versity - and the Esar's palace while featuring all new narrators to bring the total to 14 in four books, though in this case two are old friends from earlier installments.

OVERVIEW/ANALYSIS: After visiting the desert and finding some startling facts, Rook decided he loves the clan life there and stayed with his new chieftain friend from Dragon Soul, while Thom obediently though not particularly excitedly, followed his brother's lead. However they needed to inform someone of the unexpected and potentially very dangerous things they had discovered, so who better than their former comrades in the Dragon Corps, most notably their chief, the steady Sergeant Adamo.

So we have the natural narrator choices of Adamo, now professor of strategy at the Versity and the biggest statue in the heroic monument commissioned by the Esar to mark Volstov's triumph in the war, and Balfour who has the steelhands of the title - a fusion of magic and technology that replaced the hands he lost in the climax of the war with Ke Han in the first volume.

As main non-pov characters we also see margrave aka magician Royston and his live-in boyfriend Hal who were the other two original pov's in Havemercy in addition to Thom and Rook, with Royston bobbing in and out of the Esar's favor, though now he is "settled" and stays away from the unconventional behavior that led to his exile in that book, while Hal has been appointed assistant professor of magic at the Versity.

But there is the new too, namely the country youngsters pov's: Laure(nce), a tomboyish girl with a boy's name and her "fiance", Toverre, a girlish boy with a crush on Hal, both just arriving from the sticks on the Esar's new scholarships that have been instituted to bring "new country blood" to the capital, a sensible choice on its face considering how Hal, another boy from the middle of nowhere, saved everyone's bacon in Havemercy.

Steelhands starts with Adamo receiving Thom's letter informing him about the events in Dragon Soul; since that is something that has huge possible implications, he starts getting in touch with the survivors of the Dragon Corps, Roy and Hal to discuss how to deal with the possible issues, while being clearly aware of the danger this entails.

In the meantime, Laure and Toverre get used to the capital and college life, make friends with their classmates, while quite unexpectedly Laure finds Adamo's unconventional teaching style very appealing, so she brings herself quite forcefully to his attention - as "an immortalized in stone" hero of the war, Adamo is untouchable by the Versity staid faculty who can only saddle him with a bumbling "graduate assistant", so these scenes offer both comic relief and a wry commentary on academia.

Of course soon things start happening with disappearances and discoveries and the two threads connect, though I have to say that happens in quite predictable ways and I was not really surprised by most of the later occurrences. However the POV's more than made for that since they were fresh and very well realized, while the writing style remained the same flowing and engaging one of the earlier three novels.

The strength of this series is in first and foremost in the "human interest" part, since the authors keep creating convincing and *very different* character voices each book and make us the readers really care for them; sure there is magic and a good world building and a fair amount of action, but getting to see the world from fresh perspectives and caring for the fates of Laure, Adamo and the rest is what makes this book stand out.

The ending is very good too, wrapping up the two converging threads though of course new vistas open and I am really curious where the two authors go from here since I definitely want more! I would also add that while the four books follow each other chronologically and their stories connect, each has its own resolution of its main thread or threads so they can be read as standalones with just a little brush-up on what's what.

As the other series novels, Steelhands (A+) was a book that once opened, it just took me in and I could not stop reading it until the end. There is something "magical" about these books, so despite their switching theme, location, narrators I need only to browse them to be entranced again and again...

Original, and wonderfully imagined and thought through

I hate starting in the middle of a series. I'm usually pretty compulsive about it - if I haven't read book one, I won't read any of it. But sometimes I will put my name in for something on the LibraryThing Early Reviewers page, wherever the book falls in its series - kind of on the assumption that I'm not going to get it. From the May batch of early reviewers I received Steelhands, by Jaida Jones and Danielle Bennett - "Havemercy #4". Feeling my duty to get the read and review done before the anticipated release date in August, I squared my shoulders and plunged in.

The two ladies who wrote this should give lessons to all writers, fantasy and otherwise, who write more than one book in the same world. All of them. I don't remember ever reading another book which handled the problem of InfoDump in such a skilful manner: I always knew exactly what I needed to know, when I needed to know it - no less, but also no more, or not much more, so I'm left with the deep need to read the other books. Soon.

The story is told in a revolving first person point of view, moving fluidly from ex-Chief Sergeant of the Dragon Corps to his old comrade Balfour to (from Goodreads via randomhouse.com) "Laurence, a feisty young woman whose father raised her to be the son he never had, and Toverre, her fiancé, a brilliant if neurotic dandy who would sooner share his wife-to-be's clothes than her bed". That's pretty good. They're terrific characters, and each has his own voice which is identifiable and unique from the others, in small ways and large. I've read reviews of other books which don't like alternating first-person narrations; this is not for them (though I wish they'd give it a try). I do (I've actually started a book using the technique), and I loved this.

Steelhands was beautifully written - original, and wonderfully imagined and thought through. I've read very little steampunk so far, but this is exactly what I hoped for and wanted from the genre. The characters were not necessarily all people I'd want to go out to dinner with (most of them not, I think), but I loved spending page-time with them, and I look forward to meeting many of them again. They were all of them excellent companions on the page.

I've discovered a reason to plunge in in the middle of a series: it's lovely that there are more books in a current series already in existence - I don't have to wait for their publication. My birthday's coming up ...

Superb story...after reading this i purchased the other three also. Innovative world building blended with fantasy context...cant wait for the next part of the series!
