Just Okay!
By felmitch
This was a pretty good but sometimes confusing novel. I just finished reading and all I can think of is how confusing it was at times. I just wasn't as satisfied as I was with this author's previous effort (The Last Family..totally awesome read). That being said, I did like the Massey character and look forward to reading what comes next with him. I just hope it doesn't leave me scratching my head.

Must Read
By Agnes
John Ramsey Miller's first novel, THE LAST FAMILY was an amazing suspense thriller and I waited patiently for another offering. I'd heard rumors of a new Miller novel for the past several years, and I was delighted to find out that he had three novels being released in six months. The main character is a US Marshal, Winter Massey, a single father raising a blind 13 year-old son.

I bought and devoured INSIDE OUT in one sitting (here comes the sun time), and over the course of the next weeks read it over again slowly to savor it. All of Miller's plot twists were intelligent and unexpected and just when I knew I had things figured out, Mr. Miller jerked the rug from under me. His books move at the speed of fright, but he develops his characters so they feel like real people. Miller's style is crisp and there is not a wasted word or a word too many. My only disappointment was that the story ended. Don't get me wrong; the ending was dead-on and wholly satisfying, but I was left wishing I could follow the characters beyond the last chapter. Well, I was able to do just that. The second book in the series, UPSIDE DOWN, was even better and took up with the Masseys a few months later. I was able to rejoin the characters I had grown to care about in the first book and follow the perils of the most amazing young girl in modern fiction. On Aguust 28th I intend to be reading my copy of the final book in the series, SIDE BY SIDE, and I know it will be wonderful.

...And then the wait begins for the next dose of Miller

The Black Queen (Black Throne, Book 1), by Kristine Kathryn Rusch

From one of the most acclaimed creators of fantasy fiction comes the epic tale of the Black Throne, a stirring saga of tumultuous conflict set in a magical world, in a powerful family, and in the tortured and divided mind of its monarch.

The Fey Empire has been at peace for fifteen years. But Queen Arianna, who holds the Black Throne, has become increasingly troubled by a mysterious presence that is waking in her mind. It is a force of ruthless power, determined to seize the throne even if it means destroying Arianna's very essence in the process. And when the queen's body is not her own, it spells trouble for a warlike empire already beginning to chafe under the strictures of peace.

Worse, it seems that the only person who can help Arianna is her brother, Gift, the legitimate heir to the Black Throne--and the one the Throne itself has chosen as ruler. To refuse its summoning could bring disaster, but to accept it could be more dire still. So while his sister is locked in a battle to save her very soul, Gift must use his incomplete knowledge of magic in a desperate fight to discover a solution. At stake is the fate of the entire world--which stands poised on the brink of unimaginable chaos.

An easy read, but very gripping
By A Customer
I borrowed this book from a co-worker with no expectations as I'd never heard of Rusch. I found myself glued to the book and only put it down by falling asleep because it was so late. Rusch does a fine job explicitly describing fantasy lands, people and magic. This is especially true towards the end when we are inside Arianna's mind. I am now interested in reading the Fey series. I also recommend that if people like these books, they should read Stephen King's Dark Tower series.

Good, but A little disappointing
By A Customer
It was a good book, and it was cool to catch up on what's been going on since "Victory". It seemed that she spent almost the whole book on buildup though. It didn't say QUITE as much as I wanted to know, and there wasn't much action until the end. It was still excellant, and every Fey fan should read it. But it wasn't quite up to the last one's standard.

Read it now. I was right
By A Customer
This book is just as enjoyable as the original Fey series. It is just as captivating, unpredictible, sad, etc. If your looking for something good to read, read The Fey series then this book, then of course The Black King when it is released.

A GAME OF THRONES
A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE: BOOK ONE

Long ago, in a time forgotten, a preternatural event threw the seasons out of balance. In a land where summers can last decades and winters a lifetime, trouble is brewing. The cold is returning, and in the frozen wastes to the north of Winterfell, sinister forces are massing beyond the kingdom’s protective Wall. To the south, the king’s powers are failing—his most trusted adviser dead under mysterious circumstances and his enemies emerging from the shadows of the throne. At the center of the conflict lie the Starks of Winterfell, a family as harsh and unyielding as the frozen land they were born to. Now Lord Eddard Stark is reluctantly summoned to serve as the king’s new Hand, an appointment that threatens to sunder not only his family but the kingdom itself.

Sweeping from a harsh land of cold to a summertime kingdom of epicurean plenty, A Game of Thrones tells a tale of lords and ladies, soldiers and sorcerers, assassins and bastards, who come together in a time of grim omens. Here an enigmatic band of warriors bear swords of no human metal; a tribe of fierce wildlings carry men off into madness; a cruel young dragon prince barters his sister to win back his throne; a child is lost in the twilight between life and death; and a determined woman undertakes a treacherous journey to protect all she holds dear. Amid plots and counter-plots, tragedy and betrayal, victory and terror, allies and enemies, the fate of the Starks hangs perilously in the balance, as each side endeavors to win that deadliest of conflicts: the game of thrones.

Unparalleled in scope and execution, A Game of Thrones is one of those rare reading experiences that catch you up from the opening pages, won’t let you go until the end, and leave you yearning for more.

Amazon.com Review
Readers of epic fantasy series are: (1) patient--they are left in suspense between each volume, (2) persistent--they reread or at least review the previous book(s) when a new installment comes out, (3) strong--these 700-page doorstoppers are heavy, and (4) mentally agile--they follow a host of characters through a myriad of subplots. In A Game of Thrones, the first book of a projected six, George R.R. Martin rewards readers with a vividly real world, well-drawn characters, complex but coherent plotting, and beautifully constructed prose, which Locus called "well above the norms of the genre."

Martin's Seven Kingdoms resemble England during the Wars of the Roses, with the Stark and Lannister families standing in for the Yorks and Lancasters. The story of these two families and their struggle to control the Iron Throne dominates the foreground; in the background is a huge, ancient wall marking the northern border, beyond which barbarians, ice vampires, and direwolves menace the south as years-long winter advances. Abroad, a dragon princess lives among horse nomads and dreams of fiery reconquest.

There is much bloodshed, cruelty, and death, but A Game of Thrones is nevertheless compelling; it garnered a Nebula nomination and won the 1996 Locus Award for Best Fantasy Novel. So, on to A Clash of Kings! --Nona Vero

From Publishers Weekly
In a world where the approaching winter will last four decades, kings and queens, knights and renegades struggle for control of a throne. Some fight with sword and mace, others with magic and poison. Beyond the Wall to the north, meanwhile, the Others are preparing their army of the dead to march south as the warmth of summer drains from the land. After more than a decade devoted primarily to TV and screen work, Martin (The Armageddon Rag, 1983) makes a triumphant return to high fantasy with this extraordinarily rich new novel, the first of a trilogy. Although conventional in form, the book stands out from similar work by Eddings, Brooks and others by virtue of its superbly developed characters, accomplished prose and sheer bloody-mindedness. Although the romance of chivalry is central to the culture of the Seven Kingdoms, and tournaments, derring-do and handsome knights abound, these trappings merely give cover to dangerous men and women who will stop at nothing to achieve their goals. When Lord Stark of Winterfell, an honest man, comes south to act as the King's chief councilor, no amount of heroism or good intentions can keep the realm under control. It is fascinating to watch Martin's characters mature and grow, particularly Stark's children, who stand at the center of the book. Martin's trophy case is already stuffed with major prizes, including Hugos, Nebulas, Locus Awards and a Bram Stoker. He's probably going to have to add another shelf, at least. Major ad/promo.

Well plotted and paced; excellent, fresh fantasy tale
By MISTER SJEM
First off, I'm a heavy duty fan of GRRM. I've read over a 100 different fantasy authors in my time (started at 12; I'm now 32). Took about 5 years off from the genre b/c I felt it was all getting too formulaic and cliched.
So, when I came back to fantasy at the end of 1999, I read the usual: Goodkind, Jordan, etc. and then someone told me about GRRM and man, that was the kicker!
Here are the reasons to choose GRRM. I've also listed the reasons not to choose him to make it fair b/c I know their are certain personalities who won't like this series:
WHY TO READ GRRM
(1) YOU ARE TIRED OF FORMULAIC FANTASY: good lad beats the dark lord against impossible odds; boy is the epitome of good; he and all his friends never die even though they go through great dangers . . . the good and noble king; the beautiful princess who falls in love with the commoner boy even though their stations are drastically different . . . you get the idea. After reading this over and over, it gets old.
(2) YOU ARE TIRED OF ALL THE HEROES STAYING ALIVE EVEN THOUGH THEY ARE UNDER CONSTANT DANGER: this gets even worse where the author kills a main hero off but that person comes back later in the story. Or, a hero does die but magic brings him back.
This sometimes carries to minor characters where even they may not die, but most fantasy authors like to kill them off to show that some risked the adventure and perished.
(3) YOU ARE A MEDIEVAL HISTORY BUFF: this story was influenced by the WARS OF THE ROSES and THE HUNDRED YEARS WAR.
(4) YOU LOVE SERIOUS INTRIGUE WITHOUT STUPID OPPONENTS: lots of layering; lots of intrigue; lots of clever players in the game of thrones. Unlike other fantasy novels, one side, usually the villain, is stupid or not too bright.
(5) YOU ARE INTERESTED IN BIASED OPINIONS AND DIFFERENT TRUTHS: GRRM has set this up where each chapter has the title of one character and the whole chapter is through their viewpoint. Interesting tidbit is that you get their perception of events or truths. But, if you pay attention, someone else will mention a different angle of truth in the story that we rarely see in other novels. Lastly and most importantly, GRRM doesn't try to tell us which person is right in their perception. He purposelly leaves it vague so that we are kept guessing.
(6) LEGENDS: some of the most interesting characters are those who are long gone or dead. We never get the entire story but only bits and pieces; something that other fantasy authors could learn from to heighten suspense. Additionally, b/c the points of views are not congruent, we sometimes get different opinions.
(7) WORDPLAY: if you're big on metaphors and description, GRRM is your guy. Almost flawless flow.
(8) LOTS OF CONFLICT: all types, too; not just fighting but between characters through threats and intrigue.
(9) MULTILAYERED PLOTTING; SUB PLOTS GALORE: each character has their own separate storyline; especially as the story continues and everyone gets scattered. This is one of the reasons why each novel is between 700-900 pages.
(10) SUPERLATIVE VARIED CHARACTERS: not the typical archetypes that we are used to in most fantasy; some are gritty; few are totally evil or good; GRRM does a great job of changing our opinions of characters as the series progress. This is especially true of Jaime in book three.
(11) REALISTIC MEDIEVAL DIALOGUE: not to the point that we can't understand it but well done.
(12) HEAPS OF SYMOBLISM AND PROPHECY: if you're big on that.
(13) EXCELLENT MYSTERIES: very hard to figure out the culprits; GRRM must have read a lot of mystery novels.
(14) RICHLY TEXTURED FEMALE CHARACTERS: best male author on female characters I have read; realistic on how women think, too.
(15) LOW MAGIC WORLD: magic is low key; not over the top so heroes can't get out of jams with it.
REASON TO NOT READ GRRM
(1) YOU LIKE YOUR MAIN CHARACTERS: GRRM does a good job of creating more likeable characters after a few die. But, if that isn't your style, you shouldn't be reading it. He kills off several, not just one, so be warned.
(2) DO NOT CARE FOR GRITTY GRAY CHARACTERS: if you like more white and gray characters, this may unsettle you. I suggest Feist or Goodkind or Dragonlance if you want a more straight forward story with strong archetypes.
(3) MULTIPLE POINTS OF VIEWS TURN YOU OFF: if you prefer that the POVS only go to a few characters, this might be confusing for you.
(4) SWEARING, SEX: there's a lot of it in this book just as there is in real life.
(5) YOU DEMAND CLOSURE AT THE END OF EVERY BOOK: this isn't the case for all stories in the series. Some are still going on; some have been resolved; others have been created and are moving on.
(6) IF YOU WANT A TARGET OR SOMEONE TO BLAME: this can be done to some extent but not as much. This is b/c he doesn't try to make anyone necessarily good or evil.
(7) ARCHETYPES: some readers like archetypal characters because it's comfortable; we like the good young hero (sort of like Pug in Feist's THE RIFTWAR SAGA); it's familiar and we sometimes like to pretend we're this upcoming, great hero. You wont' get much of this in GRRM with the exception of one or two characters.
(8) LENGTH: you don't want to get into a long fantasy epic series. In that case, look for shorters works as this is biiig.
(9) PATRIARCHY: men are most of the main characters with lots of power (one female exception). ....

Kindle editing - AARRRGGGHHHH!
By triquestral
NB: THIS REVIEW REFERS TO THE KINDLE EDITION ALONE! This is a great book, and I've eaten up the series and have been on tenterhooks for George RR to get his finger out and publish A Dance with Dragons for YEARS now. (And the tv series!! Be still my beating heart!!!) But I have to comment on the extremely bad editing of the Kindle edition of A Game of Thrones. It is sloppy and unprofessional. When I first got my kindle, I never experienced this, but now it seems like every book gets worse and worse. I thought Sacajawea was bad, but A Game of Thrones starts out with poor editing and gets progressively more appalling as you get further into the book. People who only read the kindle edition will think that Princess Elia comes from Dome, since that is how it is (almost) consistently spelled throughout the book. (It's Dorne). But on the other hand, the `tom cat' is a `torn cat'- go figure. Little things like that at first, but now, in the last third of the book, the mistakes are coming on nearly every page. Random parentheses, inappropriately capitalized words, italics that make no sense, sentences that end abruptly - that kind of thing. It would be irritating, but something I would just accept in a free edition of a book (maybe). But for a Kindle book that costs more than the paperback, I expect more. I also own a hard copy of this book, and none of these typos are in that edition. I'm not sure how the Kindle editions are made, but I expect the same kind of professional editing that you get in print books. You don't get that here, disappointingly.

Exceeded my wildest expectations...and I expect a *lot*.
By Jacob G Corbin
I see where a reviewer below faulted A GAME OF THRONES for being so chock-full of "tragedy, bloodshed, cruelty, death, rape, incest, drunkeness, murder, (and) infanticide."
Heh. Where I come from, that's a five-star recommendation.
Glibness aside, the person has a point. A GAME OF THRONES is indeed a graphic, viciously unsentimental novel. It features all the offenses listed above and more besides. It revels in them.
Can't you people see? That's the *point.*
The writers of heroic fantasy like to write about huge and epic struggles between capital-letter Good and Evil. Yet over and over again they demonstrate only the most puerile understanding of what good and evil actually are. In their blinkered, constrained little worlds, "evil" consists of sitting in a dank tower all day sending orcs or demons or what-have-you after the Crampon of Justice or some similarly-named hogwash artifact. Not even the darkest of their generic Dark Lords would be caught boffing his own sister or murdering a child (much less get away with it), and in that fundamentally nonsensical bit of characterization lies the crux of their problem: by sticking horns and a lightning staff onto a one-dimensional pulp villain and calling it Ultimate Evil, they cheapen and debase *real* good and evil.
I'm sure most of these writers realize this perfectly well; the problem is that they're writing to one of the most idiotically attenuated audiences on the face of the planet, people who really want to read the same book over and over ad infinitum with just enough variation from the template to create the illusion of difference. It's a sad state of affairs when we consider that fantasy, which should rightly be the domain of myth, wonder, and what Warren Ellis calls "mad, beautiful ideas," is the second most rigidly unimaginative genre out there (right behind romance, with whom it shares more than a few readers and tropes).
The "Song of Ice and Fire" series is a show-stopping six volume call to arms against this nonsense. Readers who come to the novels expecting another eminently predictable generic quest might be lulled to quiescence in the first few innocuous chapters, but will awake - sooner or later - to the unsettling realization that they're playing George R.R. Martin's game now. In A GAME OF THRONES, he systematically slaughters every sacred cow of "heroic fantasy" and, in so doing, injects a vigor and a zest for life and the written word into the genre that hasn't been seen since the beautiful insanity of Tolkien. Heroes die and villains turn out to be not so bad after all. Magic appears only very rarely, making it infinitely more interesting. The plot steadfastly refuses to go where you'd expect. And lest you purists think that Martin holds fantasy in contempt, consider this: unlike practically every other fantasy writer out there, he's gone to the trouble of writing this novel as if it were the most serious literature: his characters and their motivations are fully fleshed out (Eddard Stark and Tyrion Lannister are especially well-done), his prose is exciting and full of witty and lovely turns of phrase, and his themes are complex and multilayered. In other words, he's actually assumed that his readership is *intelligent.*
After reading this and China Meiville's PERDIDO STREET STATION, I have renewed hope for the future of fantasy. Works like these deserve to be read, reread, and passed to friends; they yank the genre - and its readers - out of bed and lead it blinking and cursing into the light of genuine literary merit.

From AudioFile
Here's yet another Nero Wolfe mystery brought to life by the dramatic skills of Michael Prichard. Yes, the dialogue is dated, the plot clichéd, and the hero not altogether likable, but dropping into the milieu of a posh resort in the late thirties is glamorous and fun. Michael Prichard does a masterful job of presenting the oversized detective genius who prides himself on his discerning taste buds as well as his sleuthing. In this story Nero is invited to speak at a meeting of the world's top chefs. Naturally, a chef is found murdered. Michael Prichard gives individuality and vitality to all the suspects and makes listening to this old chestnut an indulgence. Great Wolfe--So Why Just 4 Stars?
By Timothy P. Young
"Too Many Cooks" is one of my favorite Nero Wolfe novels. It finds our detective away from the brownstone, being honored by a group of celebrity chefs who meet once every five years. Of course one of them gets murdered, and of course Wolfe and Archie find themselves embroiled in the case.

So far, so good. The reparteee is excellent and pointed, the red herrings are plentiful, and, for once, most key clues are available to the reader so he/she can solve the mystery. (I, of course, missed it completely. As Wolfe once said, "I'm a genius, not a god.")

So, the four-star question: Why do I give this just four? Well, the spa where Wolfe and Archie are guests is staffed largely by African Americans, and, you see, when Stout wrote the book back in 1938, certain attitudes towards African Americans prevailed among many citizens. Wolfe, of course, displays none of this, and is noble throughout, but not so for Archie. While I realize that Stout was merely commenting on societal views at the time (and not in a nice way...the racist local authorities are NOT shown in a good light), it's a bit disconcerting to hear our hero Archie Goodwin refer to the African Americans in the story as "shines" and "boys." Of course, Archie learns his lesson, which I suppose is part of the point, but still...

From a modern viewpoint, it makes it a little hard to read at times. Therefore, I award it four stars, making it clear that this is by no means the fault of the author, who shows great respect throughout. I just don't like to hear my favorite gumshoe narrator sound like such an idiot.

If you're new to Wolfe, I suggest starting with "The Doorbell Rang," or "Murder by the Book," and save this for a time when you can read Archie's indiscretions and still like him afterwards.

No Spoiled Plot Here
By Mark Baker - Carstairs Considers
Nero Wolfe is the guest of honor when the greatest chefs in the world meet in West Virginia. He's honored and looking forward to all the great food but dreading the train trip itself.

They've hardly all gathered before the sparks fly. One of the chefs is universally despised, and it's really no surprise to the reader when he turns up dead. Not wanting to get involved in anything that might delay his return to his beloved brownstone, Wolfe vows to not get involved. In spite of his efforts, he finds himself getting sucked in. Can he stay alive, find the real killer, and still make his train?

My best friend has recently started reading these books and keeps recommending them to me, so I picked this one up. I can see why he likes them. This story is a great puzzle. I thought I had the plot figured out before the end, but I was only half right. Nero Wolfe and Archie Goodwin make for two interesting leads. I listened to the audio version, which made it a little hard to keep all the chefs straight. The further I went the easier it was, however. Michael Prichard does a great job of reading the story.

If this is an example of why Nero Wolfe a classic character in the mystery genre, I can see why. I will be looking for more books in this series.

Old friendships--and love--make all things new again.

The acclaimed author of Safe Harbor and other New York Times bestsellers returns to the seaside, delving into the heart of a once happy family facing troubled waters.

Bay McCabe relishes life’s simple pleasures, her children, her home by the sea. She has never forgotten the values of her Irish granny--the everyday happiness of family, good friends, and hard work. Bay and her husband, Sean, have weathered rough spells and moved on. Now a perfect summer, filled with the scent of beach roses, lies before them.

Charming and ambitious, Sean splits his energy between the town bank, his old fishing boat, and the family he seems to adore--until he leaves his young daughter stranded after school. As troubling memories resurface, a phone call confirms that Sean is missing. So begins a season that will change everything. As the door to all Bay cherishes seems to close forever, another opens, and an old love steps through. Embraced by enduring friendships, Bay will discover the truth of who she is--what love is--and how life’s deepest mysteries are often those closest to home.

From Publishers Weekly
Heartwarming and assured, Rice's latest novel (after The Secret Hour) addresses timeless themes and will linger with readers long after the reading is done. For years, Bay McCabe has kept her family together despite her husband's unfaithfulness. When Sean disappears one afternoon, she discovers that he has embezzled money from many in their small seaside town. Suddenly, Bay and her three children are besieged by the press, isolated from their community and broke. The eventual discovery of Sean's dead body raises larger questions like why he stole, who helped him and whether he might have been murdered. One clue reconnects Bay with widower Daniel Connolly, a boat builder with whom she shared a teenage attraction. As solid as Sean was slick, Daniel rekindles Bay's affections even as his troubled daughter Eliza helps Bay's daughter Annie cope with the summer's horrors. But when it turns out that Danny's late wife may have been entangled with Sean, their tenuous tie threatens to break. Rich with scenic settings and colorful characters, this is a beautifully crafted novel despite some 11th-hour plot contrivances. Rice's ability to evoke the lyricism of the seaside lifestyle without over-sentimentalizing contemporary issues like adultery, anorexia or white-collar crime is just one of the many gifts that make this a perfect summer read.

From Booklist
Rice revisits the small Connecticut town of Hubbard's Point, adding another family to the long list of residents from her previous books. Bay McCabe seems to have the ideal American life with a successful banker husband and three wonderful, normal, healthy children, but on one idyllic summer day life as she knows it falls apart. Sure, she and her husband Sean have had marital problems, but he promised things would change and they do, for the worse. When Sean doesn't come home, Bay starts thinking about all the pitfalls of her marriage, and then the FBI shows up and informs her that Sean is under investigation for embezzlement. Her life is in chaos and the children are terrified, especially her eldest, Annie, who believes that if she could only be what her father wanted her to be, i.e., thin and athletic, he wouldn't have disappeared. A loving look at family and the issues that must be faced when a crisis threatens its cohesion. Patty Engelmann

fine police procedural romance
By A Customer
For twenty-five years Bay and Sean McCabe have been married and lived in Hubbards Point, Connecticut. They have three preadolescent children. The couple has had their ups and downs especially caused by Seans womanizing. However, ever since last year when their oldest child Annie overheard her father speaking romantically to another woman shaking up Sean, the relationship seems honest and solid.
The youngest child calls from the little league field to inform her mom that her dad failed to pick her up as previously arranged. Falling into routine, Bay rationalizes that Sean must be running late at the bank where he is a vice president and drives over to bring Peg home. When an employee of Sean calls asking for him and why he missed a key meeting, Bay begins to worry. Annie rides her bike to the family boat with Bay and a close friend Tara following. They find blood and call the police. Bay learns the FBI is involved because of embezzlement shenanigans at the bank. With her only lead being Dan Connolly, someone she had a puppy crush on before she married, Bay makes inquiries into what happened to her spouse.
Luanne Rices latest thriller is THE PERFECT SUMMER novel for fans of police procedural romances. The action is loaded and the tension shrewdly elevated especially as Bay begins to realize that her spouse is not coming home and as she, Tara, and Annie begin to unravel the truth. Though the interrelationships are explained, they still seem stretched until the dichotomously plausible final note to Annie is found and explains all to readers who will find this an entertaining romantic suspense tale.

Heartwarming
By Judith E. Pavluvcik
Perfect Summer by Luanne Rice is another heart warmer by one of my favorite authors! Rice manages to immediately draw the reader into the very depths of all of her characters, so that one can feel all of their emotions, all of their struggles and all of their dreams. Rice weaves magic into all of her stories, filling them with the reality of life, but also with hope and love. Her characters in this story were complete and the relationships portrayed were intense, believable, and amazing. Her characters come alive and fill your imagination so that you really don't want to put the book down!
This book not only had a romantic twist to it, but it also had a great mysterious and intriguing element to the story. Rice skillfully led the reader through twists and turns and one did not know until the very end, which character was the perpetrator.
Rice's books are not icky sweet romantics, where all the characters live in a fantasy world. Instead, her books are so filled with life; the realities of life and the messages of love are indeed heartwarming. Elements of romance and intrigue are woven throughout, interlacing all the incredible relationships.
After reading one of Rice's books, one comes away feeling uplifted! I absolutely love all of her books!

ABSOLUTELY Life Changing: Use a Scientific Method to see!
By A Customer
I would give the book 3.5 MILLION Stars if I could. The knowledge presented in this book have transformed and completely changed my life. Before you read this please note:
this book is NOT about religion.
1) Pick an area of your life that you want to change.
2) Use the scientific, specific methods described in this book
3) SEE THE RESULTS WITH YOUR OWN EYES.
IMPORTANT POINT: You MUST suspend all doubt and have FAITH for it to work (JM show you how).
Another point: although spirituality and religion are closely related, you do NOT have to be a churchgoing Christian to enjoy the divine benefits of the truths presented here. Even if you are an atheist, I think this book especially will work for you. Why? Because you are less tied to traditional dogma. Once you see the changes in your life that occur through these teachings you doubtless will change your views on a "Higher Power", but that is between you and the One who made you.
NOTE TO OPEN-MINDED PEOPLE: I think that in today's world, people don't want to be told "just take what I tell you as fact". In other words, if you are an intelligent, open-minded person, you want SCIENTIFIC proof (i.e. a method, a hypothesis, observed cause, effect, results). Well in our modern times, we seem to believe that our rational side is more important than our spiritual, intuitive side. What I'm saying here is this book shows you the bower of both!
Now, you might be saying to yourself "I've been told all my life just have faith or just believe...". Well this books shows you a scientific method for developing faith and belief.
Whenever you have doubts, fear, worry, anxiety, etc. pop up use JM's techniques, "God/Infinite Intelligence/The Principle of Good in the World (whatever you want to call it, it really doesn't matter one damned bit!) loves me, therefore wants the best for me".
Or
"The Power in me that gave me this desire is the power that is fulfilling it".
This book shows you that as long as your desires 1)follow the golden rule, 2)the law of love and above all that 3)you BELIEVE, there is nothing absolutely nothing in this life you cannot attain. The teachings presented in this book show the utter tragedy of life: we limit ourselves, God, the universe, etc. doesn't. He has demonstrated this and God bless him forever and a 10 days for being the instrument through which these internal truths were brought to light to me and to the world.
Don't let the filthy, disgusting, vile thieves into your temple of: doubt, worry, feelings of unworthiness, anxiety, fear. Kicks them out of your life forever!!
What do you have to loose? Now if you are like me, you feel that "seeing is believing", so let me share my experiences using the methods, truths, knowledge, etc. as outlined in this book.
Some time ago, I found myself living in a crappy apartment in New York city, with a crappy job. You could see the trash on the streets, the loud neighbors, the totally hopeless co-workers I worked with. However, I had better visions for myself.
I envisioned myself living splendidly on another continent, enjoying wonderful social engagements, meeting the worlds best and brightest. I'm talking great dinner parties, art museums, cruises, clean air and water, a closer relationship with God/Higher self, etc.
Using JM's techniques, I envisioned myself meeting a Nobel Prize winner, and seeing the sun set while on the decks of a cruise ship to wonderful parts of Europe. I also saw myself in the lecture halls of a very prestigious university.
Keep in mind that at the time that vision was as far away from my present material reality as humanly possible (anyone who knows what a cramped New York city apartment looks like can identify).
I envisioned myself there, I BELIEVED in this vision, I held on it it. Time went one. One day, about 2pm on a Thursday, I looked around my desk at work and I said, "THIS IS IT!!" I had broken up with my partner, I hated my job, I had had enough. I turned to the infinite power within me and everything happened so effortlessly, it seems almost unfair the changes that that rolled into my life happened so easily. I quite my job. I booked a flight. I moved to another country. The day I arrived I had no apartment. About 23 hours later, the power of my subconscious (i.e. my Higher Self), found me an apartment. I was admitted to a prestigious university, for which I am pay NOT ONE RED SENT IN TUTION!!
IT WORKS, IT WORKS, IT WORKS, IT WORKS, IT WORKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Now the last bit. It was my dream to meet a Nobel Prize winner; I accomplished that. Further, I am about to spend the rest of my life with an amazing partner I attracted, am leaner and healthier than I have been in years, have traveled to so many wonderful locales, am about to close some amazing lucrative business deals.
Folks, from the bottom of my heart, I'll say this: I'm not special. Neither is anyone else who has written a review and testified to how their life has been changed. Though I would love to, neither am I receiving any monetary compensation for recommending this book ( :) ).
The investment of a couple of dollars for this book is so cheap compared to the payoff. You can change your life. Even if you have $10,000,000 in the bank, a beautiful wife/husband, are in perfect health, etc., if there is ONE area in your life that just won't budge, you just can't seem to get it right, this book will provide the solution.
I am making a life commitment to giving all of the special people I know this book. Unfortunately, most people will probably never see their lives changed through the truths presented here. YOU CAN BE DIFFERENT. Break through mass hypnosis, negative thinking, and those thieves of lack, limitation, worry, doubt, loss, fear and anxiety that rob people of their highest potential and of living the life of their wildest dreams. The Universe wants you happy! You deserve to be happy.
God knows, I pray that everyone reading this post gets this book, applies the principles and sees their lives changed. The only thing that I ask (and I'm sure Dr. Murphy would to) is that you pass on the good word. You don't have to buy the book to do this--eternal truths are eternal truths. Once you have applied the teachings in this book, just share the good news and let's all make this world a better place.
I wish a life of happiness, abundance, joy, peace of mind and right action to anyone who reads this. Have a wonderful life--YOU DESERVE IT!!!
A spiritually and materially content reader....

It Works If you Use It Correctly
By Laura De Giorgio
Having received bunch of emails from people who have read this book, but still had difficulty applying the principles in this, I felt compelled to share few ideas.

First, the principles in this book are correct and they work if you apply them. The book is about using the power of your subconscious mind. As I read over some previous reviews here, I noticed that some people stumbled upon the language and pointed out that one should read "As A Man Thinketh" (yes, it is a good book to read), and made a reference to "as you think in your HEART" - not mind. Another name for the SUBCONSCIOUS is HEART of the MIND, because SUBCONSCIOUS MIND is the REALM OF EMOTIONS.

Some people also erroneously think that the subconscius mind is in one's head, it isn't. It is not even confined to your physical body, but permeates it. Your physical body is IN your MIND. Another way to describe the subconscious may be to refer to it as your "energy field" (that may be somewhat more modern "language"). Do not get stuck to words and labels, though. They are merely useful to help describe things - they are not the experience itself.

To use self-hypnosis successfully, to use the power of your mind successfully, it is not enough to just repeat the words mechanically (although, with a lot of repetition, they too will be impressed upon your subconscious mind), but you must also use your feelings - EXPERIENCING the outcome you desire AS IF it were REAL for you now - subjectively.

The term subconscious mind is used to refer to your own individual storehouse of knowledge and memories. The term "superconscious", or "universal mind", "God", and sometimes in hypnosis the term "unconscious" are used to refer to the infinite storehouse of knowledge, which you access through your subconscious mind.

There is ONLY ONE Mind, but for the convenience we have divided it linguistically into three minds, according to its functions - conscious, subconscious and superconscious. You can imagine that there is one door standing between your conscious and subconscious mind and another between your subconscious and superconscious. You access both your subconscious and superconscious by getting the critical faculty of your conscious mind out of the way and the easiest way to do this is by fully engaging your imagination and your emotions.

Because you access your subconscious and superconscious mind in the same way, people sometimes just use the term "subconscious" to refer to both functions. Instead of using the world superconscious, Murphy sometimes uses he word "God" - which I like, but some people feel very uncomfortable with due to their religious upbringing or lack of understanding and direct experience (A Course in Miracles is one books that may help in that respect).

Your conscious mind is that part of your mind that judges things and contemplates whether you can or cannot do something. It compares things and when you attempt to use your conscius mind and work on some goal, it may pop up with all the reasons why something may not be possible for you to do. Your subconscious mind goes for DIRECT EXPERIENCE. It doesn't judge whether something is possible or impossible, good or bad - it merely ACCEPTS as true and real whatever you EXPERIENCE as REAL subjectively.

When you pick a goal to work on with your subconscious, make sure that it is something that is BELIEVABLE to you. Whatever ideas you desire to impress upon your subconscious mind will work in conjunction with that which is already in your subconcious mind - so if the ideas and beliefs which are currently in your subconscious are in conflict with your desired goal, it will take you a long time to experience the desired results. If you begin with things you are willing to accept as possible for you, you'll get much faster results and you'll also condition your mind for success and to the world of many new wonderful possibilities.

Also, keep in mind, that you are in one way or another programming your subconscious mind with every thought you think. So, if you are using self-hypnosis to help you create greater abundance and you are working on your goal for half an hour a day, then you spend the other 23 hours contemplating how you don't have money to pay the bills, you're just undoing all that work you invested in self-hypnosis. Once you are done with your mind-programming, whenever you think of your goal, you'll make it happen much faster if you spend time expecting the positive outcome and giving thanks that what you desire is already yours, or at least that it is on its merry way to you.

This lovely book teaches you how to use the power of your mind in many different areas in your life. It also provides examples from the lives of others who have successfully used the power of their mind to overcome numerous obstacles and create what their hearts desired. This little stories may serve you as an inspiration until you have an assortment of your own success stories to tell - and if you genuinely apply the principles in this book, you'll have many great stories of your own.

Maintain a Mental Picture of Success ...!
By Carmen Matthews
This author seems to anticipate whatever excuse, exception, or what have you, as he explains the power of your subconscious mind.
I needed a book that was different from the hundreds that I have read over the years. And I felt as though I was not growing as much as I had grown, in previous years, after college, when I discovered how wonderful it is to read books, for growth.
Throughout this book, as the author presents concrete examples of how to solve problems that others present to him, he guides readers to affirm slowly, quietly and feelingly, as you visualize the end result, and the state of freedom that you will have, because you have faith in your mind.
He also advises you to create these affirmations, which you will verbalize at least 3 times a day.
Well, for me, I had to say, "But wait a minute! How can I affirm all of these, 3 times a day? I have so many things that I want to solve, so many goals that I want to surpass, and some defeating statements to replace with empowering statements."
The answer came to me in less than 2 days, as I chose to type my affirmations. Initially, my plan was to retype them everyday. But, through the power of what I have learned from this book, the 7 pages of typed affirmations all led me within one week to relax and realize my dreams.
Things happened before I realized that they really did happen.
My affirmations were so strong, so much a part of myself, that consciously, I instructed my subconscious mind to take care of things, just as a leader delegates - and things certainly happened.
Read this book, because you deserve to master the laws of your mind.

Odd Hours, by Dean Koontz

Only a handful of fictional characters are recognized by first name alone. Dean Koontz’s Odd Thomas is one of those rare literary heroes who have come alive in readers’ imaginations as he explores the greatest mysteries of this world and the next with his inimitable wit, heart, and quiet gallantry. Now Koontz follows Odd as he is irresistibly drawn onward to a destiny he cannot imagine and to undreamed of places where the perils he will face and the stakes for which he fights will eclipse all that he has known.

The legend began in the obscure little town of Pico Mundo. A fry cook named Odd was rumored to have the extraordinary ability to communicate with the dead. Through tragedy and triumph, exhilaration and heartbreak, word of Odd Thomas’s gifts filtered far beyond Pico Mundo, attracting unforgettable new friends—and enemies of implacable evil. With great gifts comes the responsibility to meet great challenges. But no mere human being was ever meant to face the darkness that now stalks the world—not even one as oddly special as Odd Thomas.

After grappling with the very essence of reality itself, after finding the veil that separates him from his soul mate, Stormy Llewellyn, tantalizingly thin yet impenetrable, Odd longed only to return to a life of quiet anonymity with his two otherworldly sidekicks—his dog Boo and a new companion, one of the few who might rival his old pal Elvis. But a true hero, however humble, must persevere. Haunted by dreams of an all-encompassing red tide, Odd is pulled inexorably to the sea, to a small California coastal town where nothing is as it seems. Now the forces arrayed against him have both official sanction and an infinitely more sinister authority…and in this dark night of the soul dawn will come only after the most shattering revelations of all.

Burnishing Dean Koontz’s stature as a master of suspense and one of our most innovative and gifted storytellers, Odd Hours illuminates a legacy of mystery and hope that will shine on long after the final page.

Amazon.com Review
Amazon Exclusive Essay: Destiny and Odd Hours

Odd Thomas came to me as a gift, the entire first chapter of his first book having poured out of me as I was in the middle of writing The Face. I wrote it by hand, though I never work that way, and I never hesitated to think what should come next. He was fully-realized in my mind from the moment I began to write in that lined legal tablet. With other stories and characters, I can identify the source of the inspiration, but not with Oddie and his books. He just suddenly was. When I write about him, his narrative voice is so clear to me that I almost hear him in my head.

For those among you who long have thought that I should be institutionalized, just relax: I said I almost hear him.

Many times over the years, I said I would never write an open-ended series. Then along came Oddie, and he proved me wrong. Or so I thought. As I wrote the first chapter of Odd Hours, the fourth featuring my fry-cook hero, I realized that this was not an open-ended series, after all, but that it would conclude with six or seven novels. I now think seven.

I suddenly saw the end point of his journey, the arc of it to the final book, and I was stunned. Beginning with this fourth story, the stakes were being raised dramatically; Oddie was going to face far more physical and moral danger than previously; and he was going to mature toward the fulfillment of a destiny that I had not seen coming until that moment.

Initially, I tried to argue myself out of the direction that Odd Hours was taking. I didn't believe that the first three books had put down a sufficient foundation to support the formidable architecture that I saw rising from it in the next three or four novels.

When I began to reread the first three books, however, I quickly discovered that I had unconsciously paved the road that the series was now taking. I had thought I was writing a series with an overall theme about the power and beauty of humility. Indeed I was, but it was also something more than that; and Oddie's ultimate destiny will not be merely purification to a state of absolute humility, but will be that and something else I find quite wonderful.

What lies ahead will be a challenge to write--or perhaps not. The character of Odd Thomas was a gift to me, and now I see that the entire architecture of a seven-book series was another gift that came to me complete on the same day Oddie arrived, although I needed time to recognize it.

This world is a place of wonder, and life is a mysterious enterprise; but nothing in all my years has been more mysterious than Odd Thomas's origins and my compulsion to write about him.

-- Dean Koontz

From Booklist
The fourth adventure of Odd Thomas, the young man haunted by the deceased who can also foresee potential murderous disaster, may not be the best—his eponymous initial outing is—but darned if it isn’t the most purely entertaining. Observing Koontz’s SOP, it starts with a bang and goes like a house afire straight through to the penultimate chapter (the last chapter cleans up). Odd goes out for a walk on the boardwalk to find the Lady of the Bell, a pregnant girl roughly his own age (21), who has appeared to him in a troubling dream. He succeeds, but then a blond gorilla and two skinny redheaded guys packing heat show up. When Odd touches the gorilla, he gets a flash of the dream. So does the gorilla, who is immediately, murderously suspicious, so Odd, after sending the girl packing, takes a header off the boardwalk. For most of the rest of the book, Odd flees the three baddies, discovering that the local police chief and a liberal minister are in cahoots with them, until he reverses the procedure to prevent very serious destruction, indeed, aimed at regime change in America. Choosing so grandiose an objective for Odd, Koontz forges the kind of sweeping melodrama, complete with screwball laughs, nail-biting moments, and surprises, that is the bedrock of American narrative entertainment. --Ray Olson

Probably the Best of the Odd Thomas Sequels
By Thriller Lover
Dean Koontz is one of my favorite genre writers, and the original ODD THOMAS novel is my second favorite of his books, right after his 1987 novel WATCHERS. Given the enormously favorable response to ODD THOMAS, Koontz decided to turn the book into a series, and now plans to write six or seven novels featuring the character. ODD HOURS is the fourth book in the sequence, and is probably the best of the sequels so far.

If you've read ODD THOMAS (and you MUST read the four novels in order to properly enjoy them) you know that these books are a unique combination of suspense, dark comedy, and spiritual uplift. Odd is a character with a very unique voice, one that I very much enjoy listening to. The pleasure of the Odd Thomas novels is not really the plots, which are often thin and unrealistic. Instead, the pleasure is in watching how Odd wryly reacts to all the insanity taking place around him. The results are often hilariously funny, yet at the same time emotionally moving. There are no other books quite like them.

In ODD HOURS, the story involves a terrorist plot to smuggle nuclear weapons into a small California coastal town. This plot is in no way believable. But again, Koontz simply uses this rather silly storyline as an excuse to allow Odd to have another wild adventure, encounter another cast of eccentric characters, and pontificate about the absurd yet wonderful nature of life. After a slightly slow start, this novel works wonderfully well at this level. The end result is the best Koontz book I've read for quite some time.

Admittedly, ODD HOURS isn't for everyone. Some readers I know have lamented Koontz's new style of writing, often proclaiming that his books aren't as well written as his horror novels of the 1980s and early 1990s. I respectfully disagree. Koontz, like any other good writer, has evolved with age, and has become more philosophical and spiritual in his storytelling. Still, if you dislike Koontz's newer books, there is an excellent chance you won't like this one either.

But if you're new to Koontz, I hope you give his ODD THOMAS novels a try. Koontz is the exact opposite of a nihilistic writer: he believes there is a moral purpose to life, and that people must understand that purpose and act consistently with it. In our cynical age, I find that perspective refreshing, and I enjoy the Odd Thomas novels for that reason. I look forward to the fifth installment in this great series.

2 1/2 STARS
By Gr8ful
I really enjoyed the previous Odd Thomas books, especially the first one. I do not think this book stands alone. If you have not read the others I think you will be completely lost. Having read the others I have such mixed feelings!

I love the dialog and humor of Odd Thomas with Hutch, Utgard, and Chief Hoss Sackett. The downright profound observations made with Birdie on pages 218 and 219 were amazing! Yet the dialog with Annamaria drove me nuts.

The first scene at the pier seemed endless... had I not read his other books I would not have read beyond this point. What was with the coyotes??? The bell??? The sea glass??? The grate with the lightning bolt ring???

I love the character of Odd and thought Birdie could make a very interesting main character someday. Blossom was another very interesting character. I wanted so much to like this book. I think generally speaking Dean Koontz is a wonderful, thoughtful, and witty writer and yet this book disappointed me.

I hope he can make Annamaria a more interesting person in the next book... yes I will read the next one.

I really like Dean Koontz. Not every book can be the best one. When you've written as many books as he has there are bound to be some that are better than others. I hope he doesn't get discouraged by negative comments because we will all lose if he doesn't continue to share his observations, humor, and creative ideas - they are a gift.

Another hit for Koontz....not at all odd.
By Robert Busko
It should go without saying that at this point in his career Dean Koontz is an absolute master at devising and then executing a story. Throughout his career, Koontz has continued to develop as an author with each new story better than the previous one. In his Odd Thomas series this is certainly true.

It began with Odd Thomas, a strange young fellow living in a small California town of Pico Mundo and working as a fry cook. Then came Forever Odd, Brother Odd and now Odd Hours. Odd Thomas, the fry cook, has remained a steadfast character from the first book to the fourth even though life has not been kind to him. But while Odd has remained the same humble, innocent, and generally good guy he has always been, he has continued to develop as a character with new facets added in each story. Odd has had two companions, a ghost dog name Boo and his long time friend Elvis Presley. In Odd Hours, Elvis is seemingly replaced with Frank Sinatra.

In Odd Hours, Odd is faced with perhaps his most profound challenge yet. A dream and all encompassing red tide haunts Odd. At the close of Brother Odd, Odd wants nothing more than to return to Pico Mundo and resume his quiet life as a fry cook. However, fate steps in and he lands in a small coastal town of Magic Beach working for a former movie actor and author of childrens books. With terrific characters such as Annamarie and Brush Cut, Koontz has written another terrific page turner. Packed with suspense, a dark eerieness, fast action, and tight plot, Odd Hours will not disappoint. You'll have to suspend plausibility, but you'll enjoy this fourth Odd Thomas installment.

I highly recommend.

Peace always
