To make the decision, Matt and Olivia are locked for a week into a tiny apartment, broadcasting their shows and emitting a live web feed to help fans signal their favorite. Naturally, tensions in the cramped space run high-complicated by sexual attraction, competitive fire and unresolved issues from the intense affair Matt and Olivia shared eight years earlier. It's never clear why Matt loves the defensive and inflexible Olivia. Then again, she's blonde and sexy, so maybe it's what he would call "a guy thing." The romance is appealing despite this flaw, but the novel's real strength is the witty clash of the two gender-battling shows and the glimpse it offers of the wacky world of radio.

Wonderful book!

Dr. Olivia Moore is a therapist who hosts a radio talk show, "Liv Live", in Atlanta. Olivia offers advice to her listeners dealing with actual, grown-up problems. Matt Ransom hosts the show "Guy Talk" where he prefers to discuss issues such as sports and cars. Unfortunately, the station can no longer afford to continue carrying both shows, so one will have to be cut. How to decide which show gets the boot? Let the listeners decide. Lock the two hosts up in an apartment for a week. They will do their shows from the apartment, web cams will be installed, and their every moment will be broadcast on the internet 24/7. During this week, listeners will make food donations to a local charity in the name of the host that they support. The person who receives the most donations will get to keep their show.

Spending a week together will be difficult for Olivia and Matt. Their personalities are like night and day--Olivia is responsible and serious, while Matt prefers to relax and go with the flow. And making things even more difficult is the fact that years ago, while working for a radio station in Chicago, they were lovers (information that is unknown to anyone else). That affair didn't end on the friendliest terms.

There is a sub-plot involving two listeners, JoBeth and Dawg. JoBeth is 41 and ready to settle down and start a family. Dawg has already been married and divorced and is in no hurry to repeat the experience. JoBeth seeks Olivia's advice and Dawg seeks Matt's. This sub-plot was enjoyable and blended beautifully with the rest of the story.

I had two very small complaints about the book. (1) About 3/4 of the way through the story I started to get a little irritated with Matt. It took him entirely too long to wake up and face facts. Of course, he did eventually come around, but as a reader, I was ready for it to happen just a tad bit sooner, because his constant denial of his feelings did start to get a bit old. (2) I didn't like the fact that the love scenes were completely skipped. I was so involved in the story that I wanted to follow these characters right into the bedroom, so when that bedroom door was slammed in my face :) I didn't care for it. Note: what I wanted most was not necessarily descriptions of the physical act itself, but the emotions that went along with it. However, the story was so good I was more than willing to overlook these two very small things.

The book is well written. The writing is fresh and humorous. Wonderful, likeable characters. Just a very entertaining book. It's definitely going on my keeper shelf.

Good debut - sign of things to come

Dr. Olivia Moore is a recent divorcee and radio psychologist (think a younger and less conservative Doctor Laura). She shares the airwaves with Matt Ransom, the station's night talk jock who appeals to the more masculine crowd. Unbeknownst to the station personnel, she and Matt share a torrid past that neither of them wants to discuss, and Olivia wants nothing to do with a guy similar to the one she just rid of.

When the station management decides that they can only afford one of the talk jocks, a competition is devised - the two will share cramped quarters a la "Big Brother" and report from the apartment, while the room is wired for video for the web crowd. Neither realizes how difficult the next week will be, with all the pent up tension between the two.

When the week is up, the aftermath of their captivity changes each of their lives. For Matt, being stuck is for a week with a psychologist meant discussing things he never wanted to think about; for Olivia it meant coming to terms with her feelings about her divorce, Matt, and what she wants for her own future.

The two are counseling a couple (JoBeth wants to marry; Dawg was burned by his ex-wife), giving their own form of advice that at times is poignant, and other times is hysterical (particularly when they exchange audiences for one day). As Matt and Olivia change, the advice they give this couple changes.

This is Wax's debut contemporary romance. It has a good storyline, with a great premise. It is choppy at times, but thankfully it has pretty snappy dialogue, and the bantering between the two leads is great. Wax's follow up novel, "Leave it to Cleavage" cements her position as a great contemporary storyteller in the vein of Jennifer Crusie.

A Real Treat

Matt Ransom and Olivia (Dr. O) Moore are Atlanta's radio advisors, and about as much alike as oil and water. Olivia give women sage and caring advice in all matters of the heart, advice often contrary to Matt's humorous and guy themed wisdom. In fact, in one case, they wind up counseling the two opposite halves of a relationship.
Then, their radio station faces budget cuts, and it looks like one of them will have to go. To settle the issue and raise food for a shelter, the officials decide to capitalize on the ever popular Survivor theme. Olivia and Matt will share a hotel room for one week with a web cam recording their every move. While they do their shows, the callers will have the chance to donate food, thus casting votes to see who stays and who goes.
Neither one is too happy about this turn of events. Not only are they obvious adversaries, but once upon a time, Matt and Olivia had been in love, and broke apart. Sharing a room will make the two face the past, and the future. During their entrapment, Matt and Olivia both feel stirrings of a long ago passion, but fight it. Their credibiltiy and their jobs are at stake, but so are their hearts.
**** This book is a real treat. Matt and Olivia's romance is peppered with snappy dialog and a reality that will make you chuckle at points. Yet amidst the laughter, there are points of wisdom that could actually come from real advisors. No less heartwarming is the romance between their two "patients", Dawg and JoBeth. This is one author to watch. ****

A Book for All People

Warren Buffett has interested me for a while now. Of course, everyone knows he is a rich man, but what is interesting is his ability to lead. During my time away, I finished reading this thought provoking book. It is about his life, and his pursuit of wealth and impact in the world. His philosophies are what interests me. He seems to have simple tastes, he has a ethical mindset, though of course, we would probably disagree on some of his stances, but overall, I like his approach to life. I read this book because he has been successful for a long time. What made him not crash and burn like other successful and rich people. The book is interesting because you see his singular focus on understanding businesses and investing. And I believe some of his principles translate to congregational leadership well. One is, trust good people. You have to surround yourself with people who you can trust and are good people. Second, you need to have a bottom to your downside. This is where a lot of churches go wrong. There are changes, but it is too risky, and ultimately fails. Third, be patience, you are not going to get a return quickly, and you need to be patience with people and churches. Fourth, know you will be wrong, but focus on still being right. As leaders, we all make mistakes, but focus not only on the down side, but go for the upside too. There are other lessons that this book dealt with in my context that were helpful too. It is a long read, and it is not a church book, but if you have a interest in this man, and some of his thoughts and background, I truly recommend the book. It was a great read.

Great for his life, not for investing insight.

If you want to know about his life with some history behind some of his investments then this is the book. His childhood, emotional state, friends, wife, mistress, children, etc are all covered in depth. There is also depth in the backgrounds behind some of his famous investments as in the lives of the people who came with those investments like Kay Graham of the Washington post. If you want depth on why he went after those investments like the cash flows, how he valued them, etc this is not the book for you.

Best Baby book ever!

I recently read this book during my pregnancy, having read other books like, "What to expect when you're expecting", and the Mayo Clinic Guide, and this was the best book out of all of the books I have read. I found it well-organized, concise, easy to understand, and extremely informative. I highly recommend it to any expectant mother or father!

As background material for this book, the reader is referred to "The Scientist in the Crib" (Dr. Gopnik, et al; Perrenial, 2001). It offers a fresh and detailed evaluation of the language acquisition process by infants. At about 6 months of age, a critical change seems to occur. The specific pronunciation patterns of the language(s) heard begin to be retained in a very focused manner. Also see "The Monday Tape" (The Snow Water Corporation) at Akilo.com for more insight into this process. This audio tape, one of a series, provides multilingual speech patterns for infants. These tapes are available exclusively through Amazon.com (not available in stores). It appears that they should help an infant (birth to age 2) gain good pronunciation skills for many widely used languages.

Besides having an unusual moniker, 21-year-old Odd Thomas (whom readers first met in Koontz's 2003 novel of the same name) has some very unusual powers, chief among them his ability to see the dead. He can see, feel and talk to them, too (though they don't talk back: "Perhaps they know things about death that the living are not permitted to learn from them"). These days Odd is still hosting the ghost of a morose Elvis Presley, still grieving for his dead girlfriend, Stormy, and still worrying about his very fat friend P. Oswald Boone, whose cat, Terrible Chester, likes to pee on his shoes. Late one night, Odd is summoned by the ghost of Dr. Wilbur Jessup to the Jessup home, the site of a gruesome murder. Dr. Jessup is the father of Odd's best friend, Danny, who is afflicted with osteogenesis imperfecta, also known as brittle bones. Odd finds Dr. Jessup's body, but Danny is missing. Since Odd has what he describes as "psychic magnetism," he can follow an invisible mental trail, which in this case leads him to his endangered friend. Grieving the loss of his fiancee, killed during the climax of his eponymous debut despite anything he and his supernatural intuition could do, Odd Thomas returns in a more suspenseful but less piquant adventure. Only a year older (21), he feels almost ancient and more rueful than ever about his gift for seeing ghosts, Dr. Wilbur Jessup's in particular. The loving stepfather of Odd's brittle-boned friend Danny was alive yesterday, so Odd investigates, as the "psychic magnetism" that attends his ghost-seeing compels him to, and finds the physician brutally murdered and Danny missing. Odd tracks Danny and his abductors to an abandoned casino-hotel, closed by an earthquake that killed dozens five years ago. It's a trap. Danny is bait to draw Odd to Datura, a spookily self-absorbed, wealthy porn entrepreneur and New Age nut, who, obsessed with violent death, wants Odd to make ghosts visible to her. He can't, but there are eight ghosts in the casino, one of whom comes in handy when Odd escapes Datura and her two gorillas, rescues and hides Danny, and engages in the protracted, lethal game of cat-and-mouse that makes the novel good-to-the-last-page enthralling. Quite apart from Odd's moroseness (understandable given his circumstances and endearing youthfulness), the tale's stranglehold suspense allows for less of the offbeat humor that lightened Odd Thomas (2003). Datura is a creation that allows Koontz some sledgehammer polemicizing against alternative religion and spirituality, which additionally darkens things. Not to complain, though. This is only slightly less than top-drawer Koontz. Ray Olson

Flat Villain Leads to Flat Plot

** spoiler alert ** The first half of the book is Odd’s discovery of the disappearance of his childhood friend and the brutal murder of the friend’s stepfather. He searches for his friend Danny, thinking the murderer and kidnapper is Danny’s biological father, a convict. He discovers halfway through the book that the blame, in fact, lies with a different culprit, and spends the rest of the book trying to figure out how to defeat her.

It is out of this structure that my main complaint arises. The villain, Detura, is evil, sadistic, and bloodthirsty to the core. She seeks out ghosts and even the ability to see them herself. She revels in causing pain. In short, she is a flat character. She has no intriguing backstory, redeeming motives, or even moments of uncertainty; she’s just horrible. This flatness, or simpleness, is a great exception to the many other utterly unique and delightful, oxymoronic and relatable, complex characters that inhabit Koontz’s books.

Forever not so odd

I really like Dean Koontz as a writer, and I've enjoyed the Odd Thomas series. With Forever Odd, I found my self about half way through it and struggling to finish it. The energy and the mystery simply was not there. The novel bogs down at several points, and at other points, the narrative turns nearly childlike when Thomas interacts with other characters. The tension in most of the scenes is weak and nearly nonexistent in some others where tension is clearly called for to entice the reader to move through the conflict. In all fairness to Oddie, I read the series out of order with the exception of the first one, so I was able to experience the character's development in a fuller sense. However, if Forever Odd was the first book I picked up in the series, I wouldn't choose another from the series to read.

After the first novel, I wanted more of the rollercoaster that is Odd Thomas and less of a review of the last novel. There were no plot twists as in the first novel and it is my sincere hope this was more of bridge to the third novel which I plan to read.

"Mama!" Haydon called from near the window. "There's horses on the road! Fancy ones!"

"That's nice." Arien sat at her kitchen table, trying to make sense of the drawing in the old book before she had to leave to work at the sanatorium. She'd never learned to read, but she didn't think that mattered, at least not with this book. It was full of pictures, detailed illustrations in colored ink. Even if she couldn't understand the words, she recognized the things they represented.

"Mama!" Haydon pulled on her skirt and she looked down to see him on the floor, balanced on one hand while his legs dragged uselessly behind him. "Horses, Mama! You have to come see!"

She sighed as she stood and scooped him up. "Horses come by every day, Haydon."

Haydon wrapped his hot arms around her neck. "Not quarry horses! Nobles' horses! Three pretty ones, all brushed and shiny! With fancy saddles!"

Balancing him on her hip, she pulled the curtains. Sure enough, there were three fine horses prancing away down the road. "Well, I'll be."

The three noblemen pulled their mounts to a stop and dismounted near Constable Marsden, who stood not far down the road. One was old and limped a little as he walked, but following him was a tall, slender young man with a purposeful stride. The third man dwarfed the other two combined and Arien sucked in her breath as he lumbered around the horses.

"Dien?" she whispered, leaning close to the open window.

"Who are they, Mama?" Haydon asked.

"Men from the castle," she said, watching the old man follow Calder Marsden into the ravine. The young man and Dien–she was certain it was him, even after almost six summers–stopped to talk to a nearby group of villagers and quarry workers.

"Can we go outside and see the horses? Please?"

Arien hesitated for a moment, then felt Haydon's forehead. Still too warm, but she hated to disappoint him. "Of course we can, sweetie."

Dubric knew the scent of death. He had known it for most of his life, the low stench that permeated his clothes, sometimes his very skin, settling into his pores like a thick oil clotted with grit and dust. Death's gassy breath was a stain he could never wash away, could never escape even if he wanted to, just as he could never escape his ghosts.

Below, on a flattened bit of ground, Calder Marsden, constable of Quarry Run, stood beside the burlap-wrapped remains, frowning. Marsden flicked away a swarm of flies then grimaced and spat. His pleasant face, stubbled from a long and trying day, looked slightly off color. To the best of Dubric's knowledge, Marsden had never seen a mutilated corpse before, even if it was merely a sheep.

"It's here, Lord Byerly," Marsden said, glancing at the carcass as Dubric caught his breath. "At least the part I've found. Second one this phase."

Half hidden by an elderberry bush, a sheep's rump and haunches lay mostly intact, partially wrapped in burlap and tied with twine. Some of its flesh had been chewed away and parts of its intestines strung into the brush. Maggots roiled over the exposed meat and other insects crawled over the burlap and bloody wool.

Dubric ignored his arthritic knees as he knelt beside the remains. Up close, the reek from days of rotting in late spring heat made his eyes water. Flies landed on his face and he shooed them away. "Have any more sheep been reported missing since you sent word to the castle?"

"Yes, milord Castellan. Four of them."

"And you have found several like this?" Dubric pulled a pair of thin sheep-gut gloves onto his burn-scarred hands, positioning the stitched seams over his knuckles. He prepared to dictate his findings then paused. Otlee, the boy who had taken his notes during two previous investigations, had stayed home at the castle.

"Yes, milord. Cut to the seven hells and tossed away, guts and all, but wrapped up tidy as a pin. Why, milord? If you're going to steal and butcher the lord's sheep and package it for storage, wouldn't a sane man keep the meat? I hated to bother you, milord, but I just couldn't make any sense of it."

Dubric looked up. "How well do you write?"

"Not very well, milord. I can make my mark and cipher a little, maybe read a word or two, but there's not much reason for a carpenter to learn to write. Since I became constable, I've been paying Philbe to do my official papers."

"Then fetch one of my men from the road," Dubric said.

Marsden nodded eagerly.

Dubric set to work, surveying the immediate area. He examined fallen leaves and looked under bushes and plants, but found no unexplained footprints, no knife, no apparent clues. Only the rotting back half of a sheep, partially wrapped in burlap. He wiped sweat from his brow and looked up to the arching branches of elm, sycamore, and maple. By the King. I am too old for this.

Someone broke through the brush above. "I am down here," Dubric said.

His elder page, Lars, skip-jumped down the steep slope. "I've taken a statement from the fellow who found it, sir. He was out hunting mushrooms when he stumbled over it. Dien's finishing up the spectator listings."

"That is fine," Dubric said, handing Lars his notebook. "How is he managing?"

Lars flipped through to an empty page. "He'll be all right, sir. It's just a sheep."

"I fear it is too soon to return to this gruesome type of work," Dubric said. Murders just a moon before had ravaged his team. His squire, Dien, had lost a child and young Otlee had lost his innocence. Lars had nearly died and even Dubric had . . .

Had what? he thought, pulling back the edges of the burlap and frowning at the torn flesh. Had decided that I am not yet dead and had best resume living? Dubric took a breath and let it free. The past was past. Only the now and the future mattered.

He began dictating his findings, describing the arrangement of the remains, then cursed. "It is not merely a sheep," he said, pushing wool aside to show Lars a shaved area near the spine. Two triangles were marked on the skin, one red and one black, and overlapping point to point .

"That's not Lord Brushgar's brand," Lars said.

Dubric let the wool fall. "No. It is a mage mark."

Dubric reached the road to find scores of villagers and quarry workers standing in loose groups. Most took a step back as Lars carried the sack of remains to his horse.

Dien left a woman with a little boy and walked over, raking his thick fingers through his shorn hair. Once a steady and solid brown, Dien's hair had become flecked with gray and his massive bulk seemed diminished. Dubric wondered if he ate much anymore, or slept.

Dien barely looked up as he spoke. "What are we looking at, sir?"

"Now is not the place to discuss it. We need to find the other pieces. Soon."

"Maybe I should have contacted you sooner, milord," Marsden said. "I almost did a couple of phases back when it became more than one or two at a time."

"How long has this been happening?"

"Off and on for a few moons. It started late last autumn, after the harvest. Kieran the blacksmith fattens a lamb every summer and someone stole it out of its pen. We looked high and low for it, then parts turned up, scattered around. I thought at first it was some kids causing trouble–Kieran isn't the most loved man in town and some of the lads taunt him–but it didn't stop. Couple of phases later we found a ewe without its back end, then a ram the same way. It was quiet all winter, but started up again a moon or so ago, after the thaw. Seems like every few days another one turns up, half a sheep or a whole one all cut up but still with their wool . . . So many have disappeared that folks are worried about paying their taxes and feeding their families."

"Were all of the sheep found in this area?" Dubric glanced up as Lars came close.

"No, milord," Marsden said. "They've turned up all over town."

"When was the last reported theft?"

"This morning. Woodley, a farmer up north of the pines, reported sheep missing."

Dubric added to his notes. "What did you do with the carcasses you found?"

"Burned or buried them," Marsden said. "No one wants to eat them, not after they've lain around spoiling. There's no telling if the meat's poisoned or tainted. I just can't figure out who around here would do such a thing to folks' livestock."

Dubric looked at the crowd gathered around them. "We need to speak privately," he said, "away from spectators and eavesdroppers."

"Of course," Marsden said. "We can talk in my office."

As the men turned toward the horses, Dubric touched Lars's arm. "Choose two men from the crowd to aid you. I want this ravine scoured for other parts. Tell no one we suspect a mage."

Marsden leaned forward, his arms on his desk. "You think I have a what on the loose?"

"A mage," Dubric said, shifting in his chair. "I saw a mark, two overlapping triangles, on the sheep's skin."

Dien paced behind him, muttering, "Not again. Goddess damned son of a whore, I've seen enough of this shit."

Marsden glanced up at Dien then returned his attention to Dubric. "Milord, mages are just monsters in tales parents tell their children to frighten them. Everyone knows they all died in the war."

"A few remain." Dubric flipped back through his notebook to his most recent case and handed the note...

A Must-Have Book

I was lucky enough to get my hands on an advanced reader copy of the book a month before it was scheduled to come out. Let me start off by saying that I used to read a lot. All the time, everywhere, and very quickly. And usually fantasy. Key words here are "used to." I don't anymore. Whether it's that my patience for books has lost out to other interests, or that they just don't make 'em like they used to, I don't read that much anymore. Fantasy books sound good on the back cover, but ultimately bore me into giving up by page ten. In a world of disappointment, Valley of the Soul does not fit in. It, like the other books in the Dubric series, towers over the majority of fantasy books being produced right now. I read this 450 book in two sittings in two days, so glued to the story that I could hardly force myself to stop in order to eat or sleep. I read until my eyes were so blurry I had trouble making out the words, NEEDING to find out what would happen next.

While not as gruesome as the second book in the series, Threads of Malice (which I LOVED), it still had plenty of gruesome, creepy bits that made me shiver. The characters' stories were wonderful and in-depth (and you don't have to have read the other books to appreciate what was going on). The author doesn't pull any punches, whether it's with horrifying plot twists, or not being afraid to address the real issues bothering the characters. She delves right in--no beating around the bush or avoiding messy subjects.

Between each character's story and the mystery unfolding, the book has a lot of threads running through it, but none of them are ever left hanging, and each one grips you and doesn't let go. If you're looking for a good fantasy novel, or a good mystery, with elements of horror blended with engaging characters and a story that won't let you put it down until the end, READ THIS BOOK.

Refreshing!

I have read a lot of fantasy so it gets a little old with the same old plot twists. TSJ is a wonderfully refreshing author although her work is quite dark. This latest book Valley of the Soul, is in my opinion the best of the three so far. It has just the right balance of darkness, evil villains, plot twists and it answers some questions that were raised in the first two books of the series and also raises new and more intriging questions at the same time.

I would recommend this series to anyone who enjoys mystery, fantasy and intrigue.

More Dubric & Co. investigations

Dubric and his band of investigators are back in the third book of the series and it seems they have a full-fledged mage on the rampage. Now, for those who didn't read the previous books, mages are not gentle Gandalf-types around here. Think homicidal maniacs who torture for fun and combine psychopathic tendencies with extreme magical power. They sometimes ate small armies for breakfast, but they have mostly been wiped out decades ago. I can't think of a fantasy series that gives such a bleak, paranoid, and consistently negative assessment of all things magic. Maybe, but that doesn't mean they are similar, the Lovecraftian mythos.

Dubric, who is now in his 60's was once one of the best mage killers around. Lots of Valley's pages are devoted to building up the world of Faldorrah's background, what the mages were like during the wars and why Dubric hates them. I sense that the author wants to expand on it in future books. Good, because the series is much more innovative than most current fantasy.

Books 1 and 2 focused more on criminal investigations proper, with gruesome and gory details throughout. Thankfully, the bloodiness has been toned down, a bit. Gone too are the scenes from the killer's viewpoint, which didn't serve much purpose beyond being a gory tease. However, due to all the background info and character development, Valley sometimes strays too far from its murder mystery roots, which is why I give it 4 instead of 5 stars. Then again, the final battle with the mage is quite an impressive bit of action.

Like its predecessors, Valley provides opportunity for the savvy reader to figure who did it, IF they are smart enough. At the end, you can kick yourself for not getting it (I am 0 for 3 so far), but you can also see the logic and the hints that you should have picked up.

All in all, a good series for fans of murder mysteries and fantasy.

Hiss boo, what a sad book.

I have loved most of RMB's earlier books. I have all of them except for this one. When she wrote "Sour Puss" something about her changed I think as a person and it caused her delightful, fun, engaging fiction to plunge into a dismal state of getting on soap boxes, complaining about the government and basically all around using her book as a political platform with an occasional cuteness thrown in with a comment from Mrs. Murphy, Pewter or Tucker. Except now she has even gone and corrupted the animals. They are truly still the most likeable of the bunch, including Aunt Tally's Gordon Setter, Doddles, and Enzo, Inez's dog whose breed escapes me.

I truly thought after "Puss" I would give up reading Mrs. Murphy's series because I figured out whodunit after 60 pages and didn't bother finishing the book. However, I had high hopes when she released "Santa Clawed", her last book, because it remaind truer to her previous wonderful stories rather than political jib jab and high horses. I had hoped sincerely with all the positive PR "Clawed" received that RMB would go back to what works. I was sadly mistaken.

In summary, I agree with most of the reviewers here who said they miss the old books with their playful banter and amature detection, rather than forums and pomposity. I am sick of the political forums, I would watch the news if I wanted that. Her dialogue has even changed where the characters now speak at each other rather than to each other. She adds qualifiers to everything! There is a part where Aunt Tally uses the word "Ain't" in a fairly well known colloquialism most anyone can recognize, but Brown points out she is just using the expression as Tally always has an excellent grasp of the English language and grammar. So unnecessary! The writing here is just plain awful and once again, I figured out whodunit halfway through the book.

I would normally say die hard fans should check it out and see for themselves, but this book was so bad I wouldn't even buy it in paperback when it comes out to complete my collection. Skip skip skip it unless you get it from the library and positively have nothing else to do. It is more fun to scrub your toilet than read this. I am sad to say good bye to Mrs. Murphy, but I too agree this will be my last one. There are so many other books out there to read than to hope Brown will go back to the old days.

Too much politicizing, not enough story

I used to really enjoy these Mrs. Murphy books, and own most of them. However, this one will be my last. Every single conversation between characters turns into a dig on the government. That is not why I read these cozy mysteries. Most of the politicizing has absolutely nothing to do with the storyline, and leaves me scratching my head as to why the author included it. Surely there is a better venue to express one's political views than a cat mystery book?

I have really tried to like her last three books but alas, I think this is it for me.
I am tired of the soap box and whatever tirade she is on at the time of her writing. The cats and dogs are the best part of the book.

If I want politics, and preaching I will turn on the all day news. they all do enough of it.
I read to escape and relax but Her latest books do neither. I know of two people that quit before the last two.

While I applaud the remarriage- Oh for the days when Harry and Miranda pushed the pets around the post office in a cart.

Rice continues to explore mother-daughter dynamics and themes of religion and destiny in her serviceable latest (after What Matters Most). Anthropologist Susannah Connolly, encouraged by her mentor Professor Helen Oakes, travels to the Camargue region in southern France for research and to fulfill a promise to Susannah's recently deceased mother to visit a statue of Sarah, a religious figure of the Romany people whose power supposedly helped Susannah's parents conceive their only daughter. Filled with guilt that she was far away at work when her mother died, Susannah is taunted and branded as indifferent by her former flame Ian Stewart, an ambitious colleague who creepily follows her to France and tries to persuade her to marry him. But after Grey, a French horse rancher, saves Susannah from big trouble in a marsh, their chemistry sizzles in tired prose (Susannah was different from anyone he'd ever known) as Grey, whose wife left him five years earlier, agonizes about bringing a new woman into his family. While the story provides some intrigue (a group of Romany women connected to Grey's wife take Susannah into their confidence), the narrative is maddeningly repetitive and the lovey-dovey passages dull. All of Rice's hallmarks are present, though this time out they don't pop. (Feb.)

Need to vist Camargue!

Could this book be any more beautiful and descriptive of such an intriguing setting/location for a story? I found myself researching Camargue and the white horses that inhabit the salt marshes of this Southern France locale. I viisted Provance, France in May, 2007 and now feel the need to return to observe first-hand this special and historic area of the country. Luanne Rice has written a fulfilling story with troubled, but endearing, characters and leaves the reader wanting more. 5 stars for this wonderful book!

Exciting and Memorizing

Light of the Moon is the first Luanne Rice book I have ever read. I could not put the book down. It was exciting, and thrilling for me to step into the shoes of the characters in this novel. I felt alot of emotions... love, hurt,want, desire and need for one's mother in a girls life not matter the age. you will be not diapointed!!

not up to par

I am a huge fan of Luanne Rice, but this book disappointed me. I found it boring and difficult to get into. This surprises me as I love horses and the theme really appeals to me. But I found the child to be just too over the top and difficult to relate to. (I feel I can make that statement since I share a similar background.) I did enjoy the history of the area, but I had to force myself to finish the book. It also seemed that the ending was just too unreal. If the child was that much of a basket case, it seemed unlikely all would be solved in an instant.
