Starting out as a federal attorney who recruited witnesses to take down the New York crime syndicate, Shur immediately saw the need to protect those who might testify against organized crime. After years of ardent advocacy, Shur created what would become the Witness Protection Program (WITSEC). As this book shows, WITSEC's 30-year history has been anything but tranquil. Some witnesses started up new crime syndicates or haplessly revealed their true identities. Others, wanting to remain in the spotlight, presented false testimony at congressional hearings. Still others took their indispensability as witnesses to mean they were to live forever on government subsistence checks. WITSEC, or the Witness Protection Program, has alternately been praised as the key to the destruction of organized crime and damned for "buying" testimony and setting vicious criminals loose on unsuspecting communities. Here Shur, the driving force behind WITSEC for over 30 years, and journalist Earley present the history of the program, warts and all. Conceived as a way to help mob informants, WITSEC was underfunded, understaffed, and foisted on the unwilling U.S. marshals. But over the years it became much more organized and professional, even as it began to draw controversy. Some relocated criminals continued their criminal careers, families were broken up, and some noncriminal witnesses felt like criminals themselves. Included is a first-person account of the relocated wife of a mobster, who describes the terror and devastation of leaving her old life behind. Into Obscurity -- Not So Easily Accomplished!

I found WITSEC to be fascinating from cover to cover. Gerald Shur was one of the original founders of the federal Witness Protection Program. For many years, he was the lynchpin in bringing increasing levels of organization and professionalism to a once informal "make it up as you go along" experimental program.

Now retired and finally free to give an insider's view of the program and its successes and failures, Gerald Shur offers a sometimes captivatingly honest and direct chronicle of the challenges and growing pains the program went through over the years. He is able to give an honest appraisal of the good decisions and successes the program has had, and even more admirable, he is able to state and own the program's shortcomings and outright failures. I admire the fact that Shur has been able to step aside from this work that he lived and breathed for so many years and offer a fairly objective story of the program.

At one point in the book, a relocated witnesses' wife tells her own personal story. It is a touching and sad story of a woman who had to abandon herself without notice and chronicles the 25 years after she was first relocated. I cannot imagine, even after having read this book, how difficult it must be to leave one's entire identity behind in order to "become someone completely new" -- birth history, family, origins, family support systems, and familiar surroundings -- all in order to help save a partner's life or one's own! While some have been extremely critical of the purpose of the witness protection program over the years, this is no glamorous escape for criminals who would be otherwise incarcerated for their entire lives. During my reading, it sometimes struck me that the cost of giving up one's entire "life" in order to be protected is as stiff a price to pay as going to prison.

The Witness Protection program has been responsible for assisting in effectively paralyzing "organized crime" as we once knew in the United States. For over the last thirty years, this program, along with enforcement of the RICO statute and aggressive prosecution have very clearly limited the extent to which organized groups can impose their criminal behavior on others.

Peter Earley and Gerald Shur do an excellent job of providing an engaging and thoroughly entertaining chronicle of the first three decades of the Witness Protection Program from its start through its later development. In addition to its history, and a number of tales of harsh human drama, this is by no means a ponderous read. At points, as a reader I was simply howling in laughter at some of the characters that the program was expected to "protect". Even some of the agents had some extremely funny "three stooges" moments, as unintentional blunders became narrow escapes from harm's way.

Long and short of it—Barclay delivers on the hype. Fear the Worst starts with one of the better opening lines I’ve read in a while: “The morning of the day I lost her, my daughter asked me to scramble her some eggs.” It’s such a simple sentence, speaking of everyday domesticity. You can picture a father. You can picture a daughter. Yet you’re already filled with dread. A bad thing has happened. And yeah, for the next four hundred pages, the bad thing gets a lot worse.

This tension-filled dichotomy of an ordinary man caught in extraordinary circumstances isn’t new territory. Harlan Coben would be drawn to this plot, not to mention a few others. But Barclay writes with a voice that’s all his own. His ordinary man, Timothy Blake, is at that middle-aged point in life where he’s racking up more losses than wins. First marriage has collapsed. Car dealership went down the drain. Parenting a teenage daughter remains a mystery. Blake is a man who’s down but not out, which makes his efforts to find his missing daughter realistic, compelling and completely nerve-wracking.

The supporting cast is equally well-done: the prickly ex-wife; the daughter’s troubled BFF; the female detective who seems to spend most of her time on the phone dealing with her own kid. Barclay excels at creating people you immediately recognize, and even if you don’t like them all, you understand them. He also stays true to his characters; Blake doesn’t magically turn into Rambo just because bad guys are now trying to gun him down. The prickly ex-wife doesn’t suddenly crave reconciliation, just because they’re now working together to find their child. By not taking the easy road, Barclay sets the stage for several shocking plot twists, not to mention one helluva dramatic climax.

Previous Barclay fans should enjoy this fast-paced outing. And if you’ve been hiding under a rock like me, time to crawl out and discover a great new author. —Lisa Gardner

In Barclay's new thriller, Tim Blake, a car salesman in a Honda dealership in Milford, Conn., has more troubles than a Yugo up for its inspection sticker: his wife has left him to shack up with a car dealer rival; he has a devil-wears-Prada–style boss; and, worst, his teenage daughter, Sydney, has disappeared from her summer job at the Just Inn Time hotel. Barclay does a decent job of depicting the fright, fantasies and rage of a parent whose child faces prolonged and uncertain danger, but the narrator exists chiefly as a sketch or plot device rather than a complex, compelling individual. The author explores a timely social issue, human trafficking, but the villains behind it are even less defined than the narrator. Still, Barclay (Bad Move) earns a solid A for his page-turning plot. In short, this is a functional stripped-down Civic of a book that gets you there. (Aug.)

good beach read

Tim Blake is just an ordinary divorced dad. He's good at his job (selling cars), average at his parenting, mediocre at dating... His biggest problem is putting up with his ex-wife's new boyfriend. When Tim's 17 year old daughter, Sidney, comes to stay with him for the summer he faces the usual parenting worries. Until the day when Sydney doesn't come home from work and Tim's average life is turned upside down. Suddenly, Tim is racing against time to reveal the truth about his daughter's disappearance.

This book was easy to read, and hard to put down. Of course there were the predictable plot twists: incompetent police, deceptive sub-plots, etc. But it was still an enjoyable read. The main character, Tim Blake, was well written; his angst over losing his daughter, and his approach to finding the truth were believable. I hate when the main character keeps bumbling over dumb moves and mistakes, (or conversely, when an ordinary character all of a sudden has super spy skills and training). So I was happy with the way the father was portrayed.

Overall, I was really happy with this story. Not super heavy or deep, but it will keep your interest from start to finish.

Fast Paced Compulsive Story

I have just finished this book, which actually caused me to lose some sleep, since it was hard to put down, especially in the beginning. The premise of the story is that a 17 year old girl, who is staying with her father for the summer, disappears. Everything he thought he knew about her seems to be an illusion. This is the story of his quest to find her, with many high action adventures along the way. You have to keep reading to find out where she is.
The writing style is quick, the characters are easy enough to relate to; ordinary folks, the father is a car salesman, but the story is far fetched and not believable, getting (at least for me) more unrealistic as it goes, and the ending was not satisfactory, it kind of leaves you hanging. For me, this was a quick read, which was hard to put down, but also rather predictable in spots and I probably will not remember much of it for long. This is the type of book that you can take on an airplane, not too deep, you don't have to pay close attention to follow what is going on, but it does hold your interest.

Barclay can WRITE

I actually feel guilty because I absolutely LOVE every book I've read by Linwood Barclay but for some reason I seem to forget about him (he's not on my "watch list") until I stumble across one. I'm so glad I found this one. He never disappoints. If you are looking for a good thriller, look no further than Linwood Barclay.

In this outing, Tim Blake is a divorced dad, not really over his ex, probably not living up to his full potential in life, but comfortably. His 17-year-old daughter Sydney is spending the summer with him instead of living with his ex and her boyfriend, a rich car dealer. (It just so happens that Blake is also a car salesman, but not such a sleaze as the new boyfriend, Bob).

Sydney goes missing one morning after a fight with her dad. When he tries to find her, he discovers that the place she said she worked never heard of her. Her best friend, who you know is somewhat hinky and is obviously wild, tries to help (perhaps too much?). Blake does everything he can to find Sydney. Think of the movie "Taken" but with and ordinary father who doesn't know what happened to his daughter and with cops who are not really helpful.

This book had me on the edge throughout. I really, really enjoy Barclay's novels. I honestly couldn't figure out what was going on completely until the end. My only complaint would be that the ending was a bit abrupt -- I would have liked to see an epilogue to tie up a few loose strings, but otherwise it was top notch. I'd also recommend his other thrillers. And keep him on your watch list. Great writing and great thrillers, suspenseful reading!

Luanne Rice does it again

Every year, widower Christopher Byrne leaves Nova Scotia and comes to Chelsea, New York City to sell his Christmas trees through out the month of December. Last year, Christy brought his two children along with him but only went back home with his daughter Bridget. Christy got into a huge fight with his 17 year old son, Danny about him staying on in NYC and in the end, Danny ran away.

Catherine Tierney, a resident of Chelsea, used to love everything about Christmas until her husband died 3 years ago right before Christmas. Now all she wants is the holiday season to pass her by as fast as possible.

When Christy returns the following year to Chelsea to sell his trees, Catherine tries to avoid him. You see, she has a secret. The night after the fight between Christy and Danny, Catherine sees Danny searching for food in the trash cans outside her home and she offers to help him whenever he is willing to accept it.

Christy and Catherine are drawn together over the love and affection they share for Danny and they learn to believe in the miracles can happen when we are most ready to give up.

Silver Bells is a book that I will treasure for years to come because it is a touching story that teaches us to look up every once in a while and see the beauty that right before our eyes.

Luanne Rice is the author of many books including True Blue and Beach Girls but this is her first holiday book and I hope it is not her last.

Disappointing - But Luanne Rice is still one of my favorites

Let me start by saying that I am a fan and faithful reader of Luanne Rice. I've been buying & reading her books since the release of CLOUD NINE several years ago, and she is still one of the best (and most beloved) authors of women's fiction today! Most of her books follow the same theme - Boy meets girl, girl falls in love w/boy, an obstacle threatens to keep them apart, true love perseveres and the lovers find their way to each other, and all live "happily ever after!" While the theme of each novel may be the same in each book, what makes each one an interesting read & keeps readers coming back are the character development and story settings, which are so well done, the reader finds themselves emotionally attached. Although I've loved some of her books more than others, they've all been the kinds of books that I can't wait to see what the next chapter brings, and leave me wanting more at the end. Sadly, I can't say the same was true of SILVER BELLS.

With the success of the holiday novels from Best Selling authors like Debbie Macomber, John Grisham, and Nora Roberts, perhaps Ms. Rice felt it was time to "jump on the band wagon" and write her own tale of love at the holidays. Unfortunately, it fell flat, and my advice would be to stick to the traditional stories like BEACH GIRLS, CLOUD NINE and FOLLOW THE STARS HOME.

There was no character development, and no one to truly root for. As a reader, I didn't find myself emotionally drawn to any of the characters in this story, and didn't really care one way or another if the characters ended up together or went their separate ways. From the small amount of background on each character that was provided, it was hard to believe some of the choices that they made and the ending just seemed to be a little unbelievable. The whole story just seemed to be a little bit forced, and there was way too much drama for such a short holiday story. This particular story may have been better told as a full length HC novel, instead of an abbreviated holiday tale.

While I usually find myself anxiously turning the pages of a Luanne Rice novel, the reason for this is because the story holds so much of my interest that I can't wait to see what happens next. More often than not, I'm disappointed when I'm done - not because the story was a disappointment, but because the author's left me wanting more! This time around I found myself anxiously turning the pages for an entirely different reason - I actually couldn't wait to finish the book and see it end already. And this time my disappointment when I was done had nothing to do with my wanting more - I was just glad to be done with it already, and to finally have it end.

I usually start my New Year off each year by reading the newest novel from Ms. Rice. This year, however, I have to wait until June for her newest book, which I guess was caused by the time it spent her to write SILVER BELLS so that it was ready for release in time for the holidays. I'm looking forward to returning to a more "traditional" Luanne Rice novel. I can only hope that this was the first and last holiday read from Ms. Rice, and that next year I can return to starting my new year off with the latest HC novel from one of my favorite authors!

If SILVER BELLS was the first Luanne Rice book that any of you have read, I encourage you to go back and read any of one of her previous novels to get the full scope of this author's talent (BEACH GIRLS, CLOUD NINE or SUMMER FIRES would be a few good choices!) Or wait until June and pick up a copy of the HC SUMMER ROSES or the PB SUMMER'S CHILD, both of which I am anxiously looking forward to!

delightful holiday romance

One year ago, Nova Scotia's Christmas farmer widower Christopher Byrne took his two children with him to sell trees in the Chelsea section of Manhattan. Chris and his sixteen years old son got into a fight over the teen's future and soon the police arrive to take the older Byrne away. Danny vanished and has not been seen since and Chris regrets his actions ever since.

Widow Catherine Tierney works at the private library of the Reinbeck Corporation. She has seen Chris sell his trees for years and saw last year's fight. She and her pal Lizzie have tried to help Danny who they call Harry for Houdini. A vanished teen and his distraught younger sister play matchmaker as the big city woman and the rural farmer fall in love, but it will take a miracle for this foursome to find peace on earth.

SILVER BELLS is a delightful holiday romance starring an ensemble of characters who will make readers believe in the miracle of Chelsea. The story line contains the serious elements of a runaway teen and the homeless yet manages to uplift the audience with its caring cast. Readers will quote Al Michaels "do you believe in miracles?" with an astounding yes when it comes to Luanne Rice.

The setting here is a sprawling Tennessee resort hotel called the Lodge, rather than King's abandoned Colorado hotel, but scary, all-knowing children figure in both plots. Agent Quentin Hayes, part of a special FBI unit featuring psychics and mediums, has been returning to the Lodge for years, attempting to solve the murder of a girl he befriended while staying there as a young boy. Diana Brisco, a troubled young woman with inexplicable mental problems, is also staying at the Lodge while undergoing experimental art therapy. After meeting Quentin, Diana begins to share his belief that she is a medium and not crazy at all. Can they solve the old murder case before new deaths occur? The end is a little disappointing, but the novel is well worth reading for the scary ride it provides. Jenny McLarin

I'm a huge Kay Hooper fan, but..... (spoilers!)

I've been anxiously awaiting this latest book in the SCU series but I must admit to being a little disappointed. I love the psychic element of these books and could even deal with the ghosts wandering around (the surprise about the little girl and her dog was quite good), but when the murderer turns out to be someone who has been dead for a hundred years, that was too much for me. Please keep writing these SCU books, but I'd prefer them to be a bit more believable. And I'd love to see some of the characters we've already gotten to know....like some more cases solved by Bishop, Miranda or Galen. It appears once you're married off in this series, you can't play an active role anymore.

I really do love Kay Hooper's books, love her characters and love the concept, and I did enjoy this book which is why I gave it three stars, but it wasn't my favorite.

Bear's exploration of gender stereotypes and the characters' reactions to the rigid expectations of a world of strict gender roles proves fascinating, as does her exploration of political systems gone too far in more than one direction. About the Author
Elizabeth Bear was born on the same say as Frodo and Bilbo Baggins, but in a different year. This, coupled with her childhood tendency to read the dictionary for fun, has led inevitably to penury, intransigence, and the writing of speculative fiction. Her hobbies include incompetent archery, practicing guitar, and reading biographies of Elizabethan playmenders.

She is the recipient of the John W. Campbell Award for best New Writer and the author of over a dozen published or forthcoming novels, including the Locus Award-winning Jenny Casey trilogy and the Phillip K. Dick Award-nominated Carnival. A native New Englander, she spent seven years near Las Vegas, but now lives in Connecticut with a presumptuous cat.

Exciting and twisty planetary SF adventure on gender themes

Elizabeth Bear's new novel is an exciting and twisty science fiction adventure story. Bear wields several fairly traditional (and not always quite so traditional) SF tropes with expertise: a female-dominated human culture, radical environmentalists killing off most of the Earth's human population, a dueling culture, transcended intelligences, AIs in control of society. This all works very well together, in a story that makes the reader think, makes the reader mad (with perhaps some disquiet), and keeps the reader turning the pages.

In a future after AI "Governors" programmed by radical environmentalists caused the depopulation of Earth, leading to colonization of a variety of other worlds, the Governors and the Earth-dominated "Colonial Coalition" are trying to re-integrated these worlds. Many years after a botched mission to one such world, New Amazonia, they have sent two diplomats to try again - and in particular to negotiate access to this planet's mysterious free energy technology.

The Coalition diplomats are Vincent Katherinessen and Michelangelo Kusanagi-Jones, secretly lovers who have been apart for years after their careers crashed. But New Amazonia's leaders will not negotiate with any but women or what they call "gentle" men. Homosexuality is generally taboo in the Coalition, and women are usually not allowed positions of power, so Vincent and Angelo are the best available choices. New Amazonia, we learn, is ruled by women. Men are kept as slaves, though in better conditions (for the most part) than say blacks in the American Antebellum South. Heterosexual males are matched in Trials: battles, often to the death, with the best chosen to be members of household, where they live in a sort of purdah. "Gentle" males are allowed slightly greater privileges.

The central New Amazonian character is Lesa Pretoria (one small conceit I enjoyed was the use of Old Earth world capitols as family names), an important figure in the Security Directorate. Her family is ranged on the political side urging continued separation from the Coalition. They are also involved in the more local issue of increased rights for males. (Motivated in part by Lesa's concern for her very intelligent young son.) Arrayed against them are the current government leaders, nominally in favor of the status quo, and of some attempt at rapprochement with the Coalition, and possibly secretly aligned with radical groups urging extermination of the male population.

So this is quite a political stew that Vincent and Michelangelo step into. And of course they each have their own secrets - even from each other. The motivations of all of the characters interact complexly, especially as there are not just two but several possible outcomes. And into all this is injected a surprising additional player: a representative of the disappeared original natives of New Amazonia.

It all plays out very entertainingly. There are twists upon twists. There is lots of neat SFnal detail. There is plenty of slam-bang action. Most of all this makes pretty good sense as well ... perhaps there are a couple of holes, but in general things were well explained. The resolution is mostly emotionally satisfying but perhaps a slight letdown - I felt Bear pulled her punches just a bit at the end. Plus, there is something of a deus ex machina aspect to the involvement of New Amazonia's natives - though that's not quite a fair statement as that was all foreshadowed from the beginning, and described in bits and pieces throughout. Carnival is a very fine SF novel, a contemporary SF novel with contemporary concerns that reads like a traditional SF book (in the best sense).

seeing the world through new eyes

The best science fiction allows you to look at the world today with new eyes (I could never look at water the same way after reading Dune: years later seeing a hose pipe flowing into the street still makes me wince.) This book too, makes you look at familiar things in a new way. And what better recommendation can a book have! This is a really good find!

Slow to start, dense and thickly plotted, but then the characters and worlds click into place and it becomes wonderful! The plot moves a long but it is the world building that works best for me - looking at gender roles and alternate ideas of taboos and cultures. I loved it. Happy find!

Fresh take on political science fiction

Elizabeth Bear ("Hammered," "Scardown," "Worldwired") now has written a standalone that intrigues on many levels. The setup's a stunner--on what's now "Old Earth," environmental cuckoos have created AIs called "The Guardians," which have "culled" most of the planet's population in the name of Greenness. Under the Guardians an apparently fascist governing body known as "The Coalition" rules. Humans, however, have managed to settle a number of worlds under the Coalition, and in the process have pretty much put women back in the kitchen.

Except, that is, on the planet called New Amazonia, where women rule and duel (heterosexual males are called "stud males" and are no better than slaves; homosexual males are called "gentle" and have more rights). The Coalition wants the planet's mysterious source of cheap energy so--not having women (which the New Amazonians would of course prefer) to throw into the fray--they send two gay men (former lovers at that) as ambassadors (make that spies) ostensibly charged with returning art taken from the New Amazonians, but actually to obtain, by hook or by crook they will, the source of the planet's cheap energy.

The two spies, Michelangelo Kusanagi-Jones and Vincent Katherinessen, each have their own agendas, as do the women who are members of New Amazonia's government, most notably Lesa Pretoria--a security chief for the government--who has her own view of things.

The story takes place during the planet's carnival, a word that, as a headnote tells us (and this proves important), is derived from the Old Italian carnelevare, which means "farewell to the flesh."

The book's all about the clashes--of culture (the men shun meat; the women wear guns), of agendas (everybody you'll encounter is out for themselves), of sexual relations. And it's subtle. Ms. Bear sets everything out logically, but her explanations for how things got this way are shadowy and indirect. She tosses out pieces of information about the worlds she's built in a sentence or two here and there, in a "by the way" fashion.

Then, too, there's the intricate plotting, which works like an old-fashioned clock. It takes plenty of winding to set it in motion, but once it gets going it flows along smoothly and logically.

It's a great read.

Meh. Disappointing.

As an avid Kim Harrison fan, I read this book when she recommended it on her website. Her other recommendation, Moon Called by Patricia Briggs, was an excellent read, so I dug into Full Moon Rising with high hopes, but was disappointed.

Unlike other reviewers, Riley's promiscuity didn't bother me (although the idea that werewolves lose an entire week each month because they are driven to do nothing but have constant sex makes me wonder how they stayed employed, and also seemed like a contrived plot device). What bothered me were predictable, one-dimensional characters (when the secondary characters like Rhoan's boyfriend become more sympathetic than the main ones, there is a problem), a plot that lacks cohesion and focus, and silly twists that make you roll your eyes at both the story line and the character's actions. The premise was interesting, and this could have been a much better book than it is. Instead it's yet another mediocre offering in a genre that's becoming flooded with poor quality works. There are much better books out there to spend your money on. Check out Kelley Armstrong, Robin McKinley (Sunshine), and Kim Harrison, to name a few.

Give A Dog A Bone

Keri Arthur is Australian author whose work I've been a fan of for some years. Unfortunately, she's had to publish under ImaJin Books, an indy publisher whose books are rather difficult to find and really expensive. I loved Dancing with the Devil and Circle of Fire, so it was with great joy that I ordered her mass market debut Full Moon Rising. I'm not sure I would have passed on it if I'd known even the slightest thing about the premise before hand, but it would have dampened my enthusiasm. I honestly love the urban fantasy genre, but when I read book blurbs like "...a sassy, sexy werewolf whose just gone into heat..." I know I'm heading for mediocrity-ville.

Full Moon Rising takes place in a future version of Australia (something I didn't figure out until the halfway point). Supernaturals of all kinds blend in with human society. Directorate acts as the police force for this community of Others. Riley Jenson is vampire/werewolf hybrid. Being more wolf than vamp, she is overcome for a week every month with Moon Fever, which makes her constantly amorous in the time period around the full moon. She is secretary for the Directorate, but her boss wants her become a Guardian, the muscle of the organization. Her twin brother Rhoan goes missing and she must find him. His disappearance is connected to something even more sinister, and Riley and Quinn, a vampire who is also seeking a missing friend, have to solve the mystery.

I really appreciate that Arthur tried to involve an engaging plot in what is essentially another book in that noxious publishing trend that has taken over the genre: Tough Girl shags anything and everything for Great Justice! The problem is the plot contrivance used to get Riley into hormonal overdrive is not compatible with sleuthing. The Moon Fever causes Riley to constantly need sex, often at the most inappropriate times and it makes her come off as a complete bonehead. It's a shame, because I suspect she would be a pleasant main character if she weren't forced into lust-fueled idiocy by the plot. So desperate for sex she is that she is completely blind-sided by two skeevy evil boyfriends and engages in a rather emotionally charged affair with another guy whom constantly calls her a ho even as indulged himself in her ho-charms. And not in the "Come give Big Daddy a kiss" way, but rather the "Here's fifty buck on the dresser" way. Why her boss wants her in a more important position in the Directorate when she acts like a complete dunce for 25% of the year is beyond me.

Unfortunately, the slightly interesting mystery disengages itself from the novel almost entirely at the midway point. This novel is written in first person, so anything Riley doesn't take part in, the reader only hears about in passing. Increasingly other people do all the investigating work while Riley goes skanking it up all around Melbourne. For example, her brother goes to break into a suspect's office to find out who is behind a nefarious cloning scheme. Riley on the other hand goes to a werewolf sex club to pump one of her evil, skeevy boyfriends for information (and other things) with great gusto even though she already knows he is evil, skeevy, and wants to do bad things to her.

The final confrontation with the story's villain is so utterly ridiculous, it almost makes the non-climax of recent Laurell K Hamilton books look good in comparison. Riley, after being kidnapped by the bad guy, must fight her way out of his high security laboratory. A duel in werewolf form between the two seems eminent. There is a brief scuffle and then Riley settles things by playing with the bad guy's wing-dang-doodle. My jaw hit the floor, and I had to reread that section three times to believe what I had just read.

To top it all off, to get the complete story behind the mystery, there are three more books to buy. Will I read them? I don't know. I know Keri Arthur is capable of much better, and maybe she can reach that point if the next couple books feature a Riley unencumbered by the Moon Fever.

While this proved to be a quick read, I really felt that I shouldn't have been able to skim chapters at a time and still understand what was going on. That's a tell-tale sign that there's very little plot and character development. The fact that Arthur ends her book with a semi-cliffhanger was yet another disappointment. I would much rather have had a more sensical plot in one book, than a contrive one over multiple books.

Her main character Riley is unrelatable. There's no nuiance to her. She's yet another hardboiled female character to join the ranks of the over-exposed and increasing derived Anita Blake character.

Even though this was placed in the genre of "paranormal romance," I found very little in the story to identify it as a romance. Sex does not a romance make. The promiscuity of the werewolves make them very ineffective characters.

Also, the concept of a lab for testing creatures of the underworld is such an unoriginal concept. It's been around since Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein" and has been revived in sometimes intelligent ways (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Kelley Armstrong's "Stolen"), but this rehash came across as staid.

Many authors have caught the wave of paranormal fiction, and those who have done is successfully have taken the time to bring a sense of originality and intelligence to their characters and stories. Ms. Arthur's novel falls way short of such aspirations.
