Amazon.com Review
The core of Richard North Patterson's legal thrillers is characterization, and Degree of Guilt, the novel that relaunched his career in 1993, features two captivating individuals: Christopher Paget and Mary Carelli. Paget, the upstart hero of Patterson's 1979 Edgar-winning The Lasko Tangent, is now a sophisticated trial lawyer doing his best to raise a teenage son in San Francisco. He's a man to be admired: famous for bringing down the president in a financial scandal, he has settled into the comfortable life of a successful attorney. His life is transformed, however, when his former lover (and mother of his son), Mary Carelli, pays a visit.

The novel begins in a San Francisco hotel room as Mary, now an NBC journalist, surveys the torn landscape of author Mark Ransom's apartment. Ransom is, or was, America's most eminent writer. As she tells the police, Ransom had uncovered new recorded evidence of an affair between a long-dead starlet and a now-sainted senator (shades of Marilyn Monroe and JFK). While Ransom and Mary were listening to the tapes, she claims, he tried to rape her and she killed him in self-defense. Mary turns to Paget to defend her in what becomes a complex case of missing and conflicting evidence. Old emotions are stirred between the two just as Paget begins to doubt Mary's innocence.

The suspense of Degree of Guilt is grounded in the twists and turns of the trial at the novel's center, but just as compelling is the emerging history of Mary and Paget, and Paget's struggles to keep his son out of the media frenzy surrounding his mother's case. As well, Patterson addresses the deeper ethical questions that face many lawyers as they decide which cases to take and which evidence to use. Capturing archetypal characters and situations, Degree of Guilt becomes a parable of American law. --Patrick O'Kelley

From Publishers Weekly
This big courtroom thriller, which comes garlanded with hefty foreign sales and a huge first printing, is being touted as the best of its kind since Scott Turow's fiction debut. It does not survive such a comparison well, having none of the density, psychological acuity or sense of place and character of Turow's two bestsellers. It is an agreeable, overstuffed and creakily plotted but absorbing piece of work that passes the time well enough and leaves no aftertaste whatsoever. The hero is Christopher Paget, who had an affair with TV newswoman Mary Carelli many years ago when both were involved in a Washington scandal; he is now an ace defense attorney in San Francisco. Carelli has killed obnoxious, world-famous novelist Mark Ransom in a hotel room, claiming that he tried to rape her. Can Paget defend her, in view of their shared past, and the fact that she seems to be the mother of his only son? And why is so much of what she says about the would-be rape so plainly untrue? Patterson takes more than 500 pages--including often skillfully handled court scenes before a nicely characterized woman judge, and the discoveries of a lot of highly emotional old tapes, all involving the same Beverly Hills psychiatrist with several principal characters--before the issue is resolved. Along the way there are subplots galore, involving an evil Kennedy-type senator with a Monroe look-alike ; a tragic lesbian movie queen ; Paget's pretty assistant's unhappy home life ; a shamelessly hokey climactic basketball game ; and ultimate political skulduggery by the DA. Patterson does his best to keep it all moving, and some court scenes tingle. But the characters, and many situations, are pure California cardboard. 250,000 first printing; BOMC main selection.

From Library Journal
Former Edgar-winner Patterson (for The Lasko Tangent , Norton, 1979) offers what will surely be one of the year's best thrillers. TV journalist Mary Carelli shoots and kills famous writer Mark Ransom in his hotel room, claiming that Ransom tried to rape her. The man she asks to defend her is Christopher Paget, with whom she has had a complicated relationship: Paget is the father of Mary's son, who lives with Paget and whom Mary has not seen for eight years. Paget agrees to defend Mary to protect his son. The puzzle that lies at the heart of this courtroom thriller is the character of Mary Carelli. Is she telling the truth about Mark Ransom? What is she hiding, and who will be hurt most? Superb characterizations and intense dialog make this utterly compelling reading. Patterson also manages to offer a stinging criticism of the way female rape victims are treated by the law and the legal system. Highly recommended. Previewed in Prepub Alert, LJ 9/15/92.

Outstanding legal thriller!
By Amazon Customer
The plot is intricate, the characterization superb, and the dialog believable. It's best to read The Lasko Tangent first, since that's where Christopher Paget is introduced. I'm so glad I discovered this author, and would appreciate recommendations from other readers who particularly enjoy his style of writing.

Patterson Delivers the Goods with this Legal Thriller
By Thriller Lover
DEGREE OF GUILT was Richard North Patterson's "breakout" novel, written all the way back to 1992. I can see why -- this is a very impressive courtroom thriller.

I'm not a huge fan of Patterson's more recent novels, which seem more interested in politics than good characterization. However, in DEGREE OF GUILT, Patterson does an excellent job fleshing out his characters, and also crafts a highly entertaining, suspenseful plot. While the storyline is rather lurid, somewhat convoluted, and highly unrealistic in spots, it is always riveting to read.

DEGREE OF GUILT centers around the crimes of rape and sexual assault, and it can be a difficult read for those who are uncomfortable with such subjects. A lot of this book deals with sexual politics, but Patterson treats the subject in a largely tasteful manner. Still, be aware that this novel is highly graphic in its descriptions, and is therefore not for everyone.

Overall, DEGREE OF GUILT is a fine effort by Patterson, and is much better than your typical John Grisham or Steve Martini legal thriller. Of the four Patterson novels I have read, this is easily the best one.

Meet the smart, sexy — supernatural — women of the otherworld. This is not your mother’s coven...

Kelley Armstrong returns with the eagerly awaited follow-up to Dime Store Magic. Paige Winterbourne, a headstrong young woman haunted by a dark legacy, is now put to the ultimate test as she fights to save innocents from the most insidious evil of all.. . .

In the aftermath of her mother’s murder, Paige broke with the elite, ultraconservative American Coven of Witches. Now her goal is to start a new Coven for a new generation. But while Paige pitches her vision to uptight thirty-something witches in business suits, a more urgent matter commands her attention.

Someone is murdering the teenage offspring of the underworld’s most influential Cabals — a circle of families that makes the mob look like amateurs. And none is more powerful than the Cortez Cabal, a faction Paige is intimately acquainted with. Lucas Cortez, the rebel son and unwilling heir, is none other than her boyfriend. But love isn’t blind, and Paige has her eyes wide open as she is drawn into a hunt for an unnatural-born killer. Pitted against shamans, demons, and goons, it’s a battle chilling enough to make a wild young woman grow up in a hurry. If she gets the chance.

From Publishers Weekly
Set in a supernatural but credible underworld of industrial baron sorcerers and psychologically crippled witches, the fourth novel in Armstrong's Women of the Otherworld series (after Dime Store Magic) follows young renegade witch Paige Winterbourne as she pitches a group of uptight business-suited witches to join her alternative coven, which she claims will re-empower the new generation. It's a task made nearly impossible by Paige's romantic association with sorcerer/lawyer Lucas Cortez; in Armstrong's world, witches and sorcerers are bitter enemies. Lucas aims to bring down the mafia-like cabal to which he's heir apparent, but this goal and Paige's are put on the back burner when someone starts murdering the children of rival cabal leaders. In their hunt for the killer, Paige and Lucas must rely on a number of unpromising allies: a vicious aging vampire, a TV celebrity necromancer and the ghost mom of an adolescent witch who may be the murderer's next victim. As in the author's first book, Bitten (which introduced the world's only female werewolf, Elena, who also figures in this plot), breakneck action is tempered by deep psychological insights, intense sensuality and considerable humor.

Even better than Dime Store magic!
By L. A. Kane
While Dime Store Magic focused on small town coven politics, this book gives us great insight into the world of the cabals, where savvy business, organized crime, and supernatural politics blend together in an interesting and believable way. The main plot revolves around Paige and Lucas's hunt for whoever is killing off the cabal's supernatural children, yet the real strength of this book is the outstanding interplay between the characters. Armstrong's characterization is simply outstanding! The dialog is exquisite and the pacing is phenomenal. It makes her alternate America really come to life in a believable way.

Here's the main cast of characters: Benicio is a sorcerer, manipulative dad, and charismatic underworld boss. Lucas is his rebellious, good-hearted son, who wants nothing to do with the cabal yet has become the heir apparent anyway. He is also Paige's boyfriend. As a witch and our heroine, she caught in the middle. Lucas and Paige must simultaneously face off against the killer and the cabals. And, of course, witches and sorcerers get along somewhat less well than cats and dogs. Even the bit characters like Troy the half-demon bodyguard are interesting and convincingly written. Cassandra the self-absorbed, 300-year-old vampire is quirky and interesting too.

Once again Armstrong has produced an outstanding book. It's great fun and well worth the read!

Wonderful book in the series.
By Carmilla
Industrial Magic continues the story of the witches Paige and Savannah which started back in Stolen and Dime Store Magic.

Paige and her new boyfriend Lucas relationship really 'blossoms' in this book and i can see them being together for quite some time. They grow quite a unique relationship together hunting the unnatural born killer of this novel. Each lead they get on the killer leads them down a dangerous path and not everything ends up as it seems. Besides themselves, just about everyone they know is in danger just by being associated with them.

That leads to a suspenseful sense of not knowing who is the next 'target.'

While the hunt for the killer was the main part of the book i was disappointed that my favorite funny and bratty fireplug, Savannah, didnt have a larger part. She was scarcely in the book.

Also, the other side characters who were introduced, like Jaime and Cassandra, who was were more fleshed out than past novels grew quite interesting. Plus, i really doubt we've seen the last of Hector. He's definitely going to be the main 'baddie' of a future book...

All in all this was a great continuation of the Otherworld series and Armstrong remains my favorite 'supernatural' author, leaps above Hamilton.

I'm only giving it a 3 because I can't finish reading it as my book stops at Chpt 47 and the reviews and prologue start again. Unfortunately, I found this out yesterday, 3 days past when I could exchange it. I'd love to know it ends. Amazon, if you read these, maybe you can send me a new one?

From Publishers Weekly
The amazingly prolific Rice reintroduces characters from 2009's Geometry of Sisters for this heart-tugger about a reunion of a mother and her two daughters who've been separated for 10 years due to a disturbing secret. Set on the picturesque isle of Capri, Rice's touching tale reflects on how families can survive and thrive despite tragedies. Lyra Nicholson is a lonely heiress living in Italy while her equally lonely daughters, 16-year-old Pell and Lucy, a 14-year-old math whiz, live in Newport, R.Iwith their grandmother. Lucy's already tried to contact (via equations) the ghost of her dead father with Beck, her BFF and the sister of Pell's boyfriend, Travis. Pell travels to Italy, wanting Lyra, who abandoned her and Lucy, to finally take responsibility for them. Max Gardiner, her mother's smitten playwright neighbor, encourages Pell, even as she is distracted by Rafe, Max's 19-year-old recovering addict grandson. Rice gives Pell an old-beyond-her-years stability that Lyra lacks in this beguiling beach read that would suit YA readers as well as their mothers. (Aug.)

I DIsagree With Most Reviews.
By Audrey
I almost let some of the reviews scare me off from this one as much of a Lou Ann Rice fan as I am. I went ahead and ordered this along with Geometry of Sisters, as someone said this book should be read after the other as it continued with some of the characters. I totally agree. Both books were excellent. I couldn't put them down and wish there would be another. I am not quite ready to leave these characters yet.

The Deep Blue Sea for Beginners
By Heather Nicolaou
This was a great book - I would recomment reading the Geometry of Sisters first as I didn't and the books are connected somewhat. The description of Capri really got to me. I have visited Greece a number of times, but this part of Italy really seemed familiar. I loved LuAnne Rice's writing and have read every book that I know of that she has written at least in the past five years.

Teenagers cure all! What a decline for Ms Rice
By Miss Marple..Not
As someone who has read all of Luanne Rice's books, I was so disappointed with the decline in her talent over the last several books. This one prompted me to write a review because it contains disturbing conflicts. On one hand, she should be reclassified from Women's Fiction to the Young Adult category. She writes that her main character, a sixteen-year-old named Pell, can 'take in people's stories through her skin'. What nonsense. A young adult reader would be more tolerant of such hubris, but her adult audience may soon tire of these all-knowing teens she keeps writing about. Most adults I know are not going about their lives in suspension, waiting for their teenager to right all wrongs. While I certainly agree that some teens are more mature that others, Ms Rice's recent body of work would have us believe that kids can cure all ills, if adults were only smart enough to listen.
The second major and more disturbing problem I see with this book is the appalling way Rice dealt with mental illness. She broaches very serious subjects and then dismisses the actual work that is done to effect management of a mental illness, much less a cure. Without benefit of medication, in- and out-patient treatment and perhaps years of on-going therapy, her adult characters make life-altering decisions without professional, medical help. It's insulting that she glosses over such deep issues, and perhaps even dangerous if her books ARE read by a young adult audience, who are ill-informed to realize that minimizing and trivializing mental illness can be life-threatening.
Ms Rice needs to return to adult main characters, acting as adults while dealing with the complex issues her books have previously featured, and been successful in portraying. I will carefully scrutinize her next works to see if they include omnipotent teenagers, or if she has returned to the strong women that made her books so good in the first place.

What would you do with a second chance at life?

Sarah Talbot thought she’d never see another birthday. But against all odds, she beat the illness that could have killed her, reopened her bedding shop, Cloud Nine, and vowed to make the most of a fresh start that few are given. With Thanksgiving approaching, Sarah charters a small plane to take her to Elk Island, a remote spot off the rugged Maine coast where she spent some of her happiest days and where she hopes to reunite with the two most important people in her life. She arrives on the island with pilot Will Burke, a kindred spirit with whom Sarah forges a bond that will give them the courage to confront the past and have faith in the future…no matter how uncertain.

Once Sarah thought happy endings occurred only in books; now she believes they can happen for anyone. And as she and Will grow closer, and something unexpectedly real blossoms between them, she has him believing it, too. But is believing it enough? Is even love enough? Can real life be lived on cloud nine? In this stunning novel, New York Times bestselling author Luanne Rice tells a story you will cherish, peopled with indelible characters whose challenges are your own.

Amazon.com Review
Thirty-seven-year-old Sarah Talbot's lengthy battle with cancer forced her to put life on hold. But a clean bill of health has given her a second chance and she's not about to take anything for granted. Intent on living life to the fullest, Sarah reopens her bedding shop, aptly named Cloud 9, and plans a trip to Elk Island, a tiny island off the coast of Maine, where her unfeeling father and runaway son wait. Family reconciliation has long been her heart's desire, and Sarah knows that now is the time to mend familial fences. On the short plane ride to the island, she finds an unexpected confidant in pilot Will Burke, whose own personal demons make him the perfect conversation partner--and so much more. As Sarah struggles to communicate with the father she left behind and a son troubled by his own father's death--and his mother's illness--she takes refuge in the arms of Will and discovers a love she never thought possible, a love that will sustain the two in this life and beyond. Both beautifully written and well plotted, Cloud Nine is a moving testament to the eternal power of love.

From Publishers Weekly
Readers sympathetic to Rice's (Blue Moon) highly sentimental take on the eternal power of love and family will enjoy this skillfully wrought tale of courage on the part of a single mother recovering from a brain tumor. Sarah Talbot, who has built a down-bedding mail-order business ("Cloud Nine") based on the products of her father's farm in Maine, finds new joy in life's simple pleasures, such as celebrating the 37th birthday she thought she'd never see. Her delight proves infectious to others in her small upstate New York community. They include Susan Burke, also known as Secret or Snow, a troubled teenager from a broken home who is still grieving over the accidental death of her brother; and Susan's father, pilot Will Burke, who is trying to cope with his failed marriage and his inability to save his son. In quiet, unassuming prose, Rice fashions a tightly paced story that is hard to put down, delicately constructing the blossoming relationship between Sarah and Will. At the same time, she effectively depicts the impact a loving person can have on an adolescent simply longing for a real connection with a caring adult. The Talbot family's island home, where Sarah's recalcitrant father and her estranged teenage son live together in a complex relationship, is idealized as a healing environment for the Burkes. The plot veers into melodrama at the end, when love and death meet in a heartbreaking scene, but Rice's message remains a powerful one: the strength of precious family ties can ultimately set things right. From Library Journal
Sarah Talbot is the survivor of a very difficult form of cancer. She has once again taken charge of her destiny and reopened her bedding shop, Cloud Nine, when an emotionally wounded young pilot and his daughter come into her life. The trio together search for the meaning of life, family, and everlasting love in this breathtaking celebration of the human spirit. Rice (Home Fires, LJ 5/15/95) has created one of those rare reading experiences that we always hope for when cracking the cover of a book but rarely find. The characterizations are marvelously executed, the relationships between players are reasonable and real, and the Maine and upstate New York settings are excellent backdrops. What a joy! Buy plenty, and stock up on Kleenex.

Definitely not a keeper!
By A Customer
When Rice's "Angels All Over Town" first came out, I rejoiced. Here was a smart, funny, quirky writer who could skillfully blend elements of romantic comedy, melodrama and, yes, even a ghost story.
Where did that Luanne Rice go? "Crazy in Love" retained that sense of quirkiness, but it's been downhill ever since. Her books are growing less sophisticated and more obviously designed for the mass-market romance crowd. She's capable of more. I've bought every one of her books in hardover, praying for that sense of oddball magic, but with this mess, my loyalty has finally reached an end.
Oh... the two stars are for the portrayal of the teen girl, who manages to struggle out from beneath the syrup to engage the reader's attention just long enough to finish the book. As for the rest of it... bleah.

This is literally a book that you can not put down. The characters are so alive that there were times I felt I was experiencing the actual events. It is a real tearjerker, but a book that has become a part of my life. I actually feel very enriched after reading this wonderful novel and it has made me make some changes in my life.

Stalemate (An Eve Duncan Forensics Thriller), by Iris Johansen

Eve Duncan has turned down the job twice already. Her skill and devotion in identifying murder victims and helping bring their killers to justice may be world-renowned. But Eve works exclusively for law enforcement and the families of the innocent, and the man on the other end of the phone is many things—none of them law-abiding or innocent.

One of the world’s most wanted men, little is really known about Luis Montalvo except that he is extraordinarily dangerous and that he never takes no for an answer. Now he wants Eve’s help in the worst way. For he believes they have something in common—and he’s about to prove it with a grisly warning.

Eve will leave everything and everyone behind, even the man she trusts and loves the most, Atlanta detective Joe Quinn, to travel to Montalvo’s luxurious armed compound in the Colombian jungle to identify the skull he has recovered. She has agreed to this devil’s bargain to save an innocent family, but also for a reason she can’t admit to Joe, to the CIA, to anyone. For the man in the jungle has promised to be able to give Eve what she wants most of all—the key to unlocking the darkest and most painful mystery of her past.

But Eve is in more danger than she can imagine. As she gets closer to identifying the skull, she finds herself caught between two ruthless killers with no way out. Now, with everything on the line, Eve Duncan must make the most chilling choice of all. And if she’s wrong…she’s dead.

From Publishers Weekly
In the latest Eve Duncan forensics thriller from bestseller Johansen (Killer Dreams), the Atlanta-based forensic sculptor with an international reputation finds herself attracted, not always convincingly, to a sleazy manipulator. Duncan, who specializes in reconstructing facial features from skulls, has buried herself in her work since the disappearance and presumed death of her seven-year-old daughter, Bonnie, years earlier. That still-open wound is probed with sadistic skill by Luis Montalvo, a shady Colombian arms dealer, who offers to solve the mystery of what happened to Bonnie if Duncan agrees to attempt a reconstruction from a skull Montalvo believes was his late wife's. Despite the misgivings of her former husband, an FBI agent, Duncan accepts, and soon finds herself dodging bullets in a war between Montalvo and a drug lord rival in the Colombian jungle. Despite a shortage of the sort of meaty science that, say, a Kathy Reichs thriller typically provides, Johansen's faithful audience should be satisfied. (Jan.)

From Booklist
Forensic sculptor Eve Duncan is a complicated woman. She has survived her years in the school of hard knocks, although not without scars. And she has suffered the worst event a parent can, losing a child to abduction. Now she helps other stricken parents by reconstructing skulls so that victims can be identified. In this, she is one of the best. In addition to her work, she has Joe, a wonderfully understanding man with many military and government connections. But all this abruptly changes when Eve gets a phone call from Montalvo, a drug lord in South America in need of her services. Eve initially refuses to make the journey, but after he promises to use all his resources to find her daughter's killer and her body, this scarily single-minded and stubborn woman agrees to go, despite knowing that she will most likely be killed. Eve is then simultaneously repelled by and attracted to Montalvo. Johansen strikes again, creating both a nonstop thriller and a character study about an individual who has long seen the world in black and white, and now perceives only shades of gray. Maria Hatton

Lots of action and surprises
By ellen
I have been a fan of Iris Johansen for a long time - Her series featuring Eve Duncan have always had a reality to them. Eve lost her daughter, Bonnie, and has failed to find her body and 'bring her home'. To do something productive with her life, she becomes a forsenic sculptor, bringing back loved ones to families by identifying the lost faces.
Since the beginning of the series, Bonnie has appeared to Eve and speaks with her. Some folks think she comes in dreams and is not real. She is real, and I take exception that Eve calls her daughter a ghost - Bonnie is a spirit and there is a difference. Eve is awake when Bonnie comes and Bonnie tells Eve things she wouldn't know - So Bonnie is a great character in this series too.
In Stalemate, Eve has been contacted by a Colombian boss to come and do a reconstruction for him. She refuses. He says he can help find her current reconstruction's murderer. He does. And he offers her one thing no one else can do - bring Bonnie home and find her killer. With that strong pull, she decides to fly to Colombia. Montalvo is a mystery man - strong, handsome, powerful, with his own kind of justice. Eve is drawn to him, however her loyalty is to Bonnie and Joe, her live-in lover. Joe gets his feelings hurt that Eve goes to Montalvo, and it starts a stalemate - she wants Bonnie, Joe can never fulfil that. Montalvo says he can.
So therein lies the story - Eve doing her job for Montalvo, and Joe, following her to Colombia, is upset with Eve that he wasn't consulted in her decision. Eve on a personal mission to get Bonnie back if she completes Montalvo's job. Montalvo is a great character, and Bonnie tells Eve that she will see Montalvo again...that should be interesting.

Zach's Law (Hagen), by Kay Hooper

From New York Times bestselling author Kay Hooper comes a classic love story about a man who lives by his own strict code—and the headstrong woman who’s determined to crack it.

When car trouble leaves her stranded in a deserted corner of the Rockies, love is the last thing on Teddy Tyler’s mind. But there’s no denying the attraction that grips her the minute she lays eyes on Zach Steele, a rugged security expert staking out a gang of gunrunners in a remote mountain cabin. Zach has survived this long by adhering to a few simple principles: Travel light, travel fast, and travel alone. Now, to keep from blowing his cover, he must hold Teddy hostage for a week—if, that is, he can keep at bay his own simmering feelings for her.

Teddy’s not that easily confined, especially when her man’s in danger. So when a simple surveillance job turns into a deadly game of cat-and-mouse, she must convince the original lone wolf to let her help—or see their chance at love fall prey to one of Zach’s deadliest enemies.

Hooper: ZACH'S LAW

One

Theodora Suzanne Jessica Tyler realized she’d made a mistake. Not a big one, really, except that it now looked as though she’d landed herself in a first-class mess. She was miles away from civilization, it was after midnight, and her beloved old Impala had just given up the ghost.

Swearing, Teddy got out of the car and slammed the door, annoyed at herself rather than the Impala. She’d been warned, after all, that the car probably wouldn’t be able to stand the trip across the Rockies. And the poor thing had groaned and wheezed when she’d started the engine hours ago in that little town.

“So what if their only hotel was a crummy one?” she told the car in disgust. “At least it had a roof. And there was a telephone. I could have put you in for repairs in that garage for a couple of days. I should have. Then we wouldn’t be stuck halfway down a mountain and miles from everything.” She glanced around at total darkness, adding a bit louder, “And on a deserted road, dammit. Except for us, there’s been no traffic for fifty miles.”

Dispiritedly, she kicked a tire gently and began to swear in a steady voice. It made her feel better. Her voice was a rational sound in the utter quiet of a deserted night, and comforting for that reason.

Teddy was accustomed to being alone, but she didn’t like being this alone. And since panic was alien to her nature, she began to get angrier.

“There must be somebody in this godforsaken wilderness. Maybe if I blew the horn—”

There was somebody in the wilderness.

When he reached out, the last thing Zach expected to gather to his massive chest was a small, soft, decidedly feminine armful with a fine talent for creative cursing and great survival instincts. He’d heard a woman speak, but she’d sounded taller somehow, and it was too dark to see clearly.

He clamped one big hand over her mouth, cutting off the loud and colorful swearing, and tried not to hurt her while also trying to protect vulnerable parts of his anatomy from her rage.

“Hold it!” he growled hastily. “I’m not going to hurt you!”

She chose not to believe him. She also chose to bring her small, booted heel down squarely on his left foot, and since he wasn’t wear- ing boots himself, the contact was definitely painful. She also bit him.

“Dammit!” He grunted with pain, shifting his feet and momentarily releasing her mouth.

“Let go of me, you big oaf!” she said, then drew a deep breath.

Since he couldn’t afford to let her scream, Zach covered her mouth again. Her response was a series of indignant kicks and a few violent and improbable wiggles. A bit indignant himself, he lifted her completely off her feet and tightened his grasp with the care of a large and powerful man who knew his own vast strength to the last ounce; he was still hoping he wouldn’t hurt her.

Speaking in a soft voice near her ear, he said, “I’ll uncover your mouth if you won’t scream—and if you do scream, I swear I’ll deck a woman for the first time in my life!”

She bit him again.

Hampered by having to hold her and desperately determined that she make no sound, Zach briefly considered his options. They weren’t promising. The last thing he wanted to do was knock her out. She was reacting fairly reasonably to her situation as she saw it, and had done nothing to deserve a forced nap. Besides, if Zach had any soft spot at all, it was for little women with more courage and temper than sense. Like her.

“I won’t hurt you,” he repeated, switching to a soothing tone and managing to set her on her feet just long enough to pull a handkerchief from his pocket. Before she could start kicking again, he distracted her by removing his hand from her mouth and quickly replacing it with the handkerchief. He had her gagged in just a few seconds and had her back off her feet before she could give vent to her renewed rage.

The sounds she made now were muffled and unintelligible, which was all he could hope for; he was silently praying the noises reached no more than a few yards in any direction. He had to work quickly and quietly, and his mind was racing over those few options.

He couldn’t let her go even if he could get the car running again. In her mood, she was sure to drive straight to the nearest town—a scant ten miles away—and report her encounter with a murderous fiend on the roadside. Even if he could explain his behavior, which he couldn’t, he didn’t dare attract attention. He couldn’t tie her up and leave her in the car; if anyone found her, it would likely be the wrong people. And if he kept her with him, she was sure as hell going to prove a royal pain in the rear—whether or not he could convince her he was on the side of the angels.

Lousy options.

Swearing softly and being unconsciously fierce about it, Zach finally managed to wrestle her over to a slender tree and used his belt to bind her wrists together behind it. Then, ignoring the blue-tinted noises coming from behind the gag, he approached the car and used his pencil flashlight to check it out. The rusting Impala was over twenty years old; it didn’t take Zach five minutes to realize the car had died and that its resurrection depended on nothing less than a new engine.

He stood beside it for a moment, gazing thoughtfully in the dark down the straight stretch of road. Finally, with a philosophical shrug, he reached inside and got the keys. The unlocked trunk revealed a couple of swollen suitcases, which he retrieved and put by the side of the road. Then he got in and methodically went through the car, gathering every shred of paper he could find and stuffing them into the pocket of his flannel jacket.

There was a large leather handbag inside, as well as a thermos and a tote bag filled with various snacks, and he put those by the side of the road. Just to be sure, he also searched beneath the seats and under the floor mats. He found a roll of electrician’s tape in the glove compartment and used that to lock the steering wheel in place, then knocked the car out of gear and released the emergency brake.

He got out and went around to the rear of the car, standing still for a long moment as he listened. Sound carried in the mountains, and he knew he’d hear if another car was within miles. There was no sound. Bending, he pushed hard, his considerable muscles bunching with the effort. The car began rolling, and thirty seconds later Zach watched the last faint glint of it disappear silently into the darkness.

This stretch of road ended, he knew, in a gentle curve overlooking a small lake. The car wouldn’t make the turn. Several minutes passed before Zach heard the distant splash of something heavy finishing off a high dive into the lake in grand style.

A muffled wail came from behind him, and Zach sighed as he loaded up the woman’s stuff and carried it into the woods. It didn’t take long to get the bags to his place. Minutes later, he was back at the tree, gazing at her. Despite highly developed night vision, he couldn’t see much, but judging by her movements, the lady was still furious.

He couldn’t really blame her.

He was more worried at the moment, however, by their proximity to the house. He glanced in that direction, relieved to find no light shining through the trees. With any luck at all, he decided, they hadn’t made enough commotion to attract attention.

Wondering what in heaven’s name he was going to do with her, Zach unfastened the lady’s wrists, avoiding her kicking and managing to get her away from the tree. He bound her wrists behind her back again, then hoisted her easily over one shoulder. It was simple to hold both her tiny ankles and prevent her from kicking him, but her struggles slightly upset his balance. He slapped her smartly on the rear with his free hand, muttering softly, “Be still!” Not that she did; an indignant note was now added to the furious sounds still emanating from behind the gag.

He carried her through the woods and away from the house and road. Within moments they were deep into the forest. Zach could move quickly and quietly, especially for a man of his size and weight. He slowed at last, pushing his way through a tangle of undergrowth, ivy, and brambles that hid a small rickety cabin. He opened the surprisingly well-fitted door and carried her inside, closing the door behind them.

It was pitch dark inside, but he moved unerringly across the small room and dropped her gently onto a wide, sturdy cot. Then he double-checked to make certain the heavy shades still guarded the two small windows before he turned on a large, battery-powered lamp. The light was strong, and Zach turned with a great many misgivings to contemplate his unexpected—and unwelcome—guest.

The first thing he noticed was her hair. There seemed to be a great deal of it for so tiny a woman, and it was such a bright red as to seem unreal. Above the strip of white linen guarding her mouth was a delicate nose sprinkled with freckles and large, spaniel-brown eyes. Her eyes dominated her face, giving her a waiflike appearance. Her skin was the creamy white of a true redhead, and though she was certainly a small woman, Zach knew there were quite a few eye-catching curves beneath her heavy sweater and jeans. He’d felt them.

She wasn’t beautiful, but there was something endearingly sweet and fresh about her face. Cute. She was cute, he decided judiciously. She was also, he realized, staring at him in alarm. Fear.

He didn’t have to ask what had altered the rage to fear even as he’d turned to face her. The scar. He never quite forgot he bore that scar, even though he wasn’t self-conscious about it. The thin silver mark ran from the corner of his left eye to his jaw, and though it wasn’t disfiguring, he knew it lent his face a look of menace, perhaps even cruelty.

Especially in a situation like this.

Not an action/romance
By SJ
This was one of those awful stories where the immature heroine falls madly (and creepily) in love with the brooding stranger after spending only a few hours with him. The "damaged" hero, of coarse, wants her too but has sworn off virgins. Hour after miserable hour of this boring story described detailed his-and-her self-pondering. There were a few abstract notations of criminal activity going on but were only a vague part of this book. Sadly, the narrator left a lot to be desired too.

dissappointing

I generally love Ms. Hooper's work, but I can tell that this is from when she hadn't honed her kills as a writer. The characters were what the literary world calls "flat" characters.

This time Michael Murphy sets off in search of the Lost Temple of Dagon and the dark secrets of the strange god once worshipped by the ancient Philistines. His quest will lead to a final confrontation with an old enemy and uncover one of the Bible’s most feared warnings–a prophecy of false miracles, false messiahs, and ultimate evil that will be fulfilled in our time...and that not even Murphy can stop once it’s begun.

Once again Tim LaHaye combines his unmatched insight into Biblical prophecy with his unique skills as a master storyteller to deliver a suspense thriller of nonstop action with a thought-provoking message for our troubled times.

Chapter One

Call it instinct, intuition, or just plain street smarts–whatever it was sent a tingle down Murphy's spine. The clicking noise caused him to leap off the seat of the roller-coaster car as fast as his six-foot-three-inch frame would allow. He sailed over the back, clutching the seat with both hands. As his feet landed on the bumper that ran around the car, he hunkered down and held his breath.

It was not a moment too soon. A rush of wind tousled his hair as two eighty-pound blocks of cement smashed into the seat where he had just been sitting.

Another millisecond and I would have been dead, he thought. How do I keep getting into things like this?

***

It was one of those days when everything inside of Murphy said Don't go to work. It was too beautiful a day to be inside a classroom teaching biblical archaeology. As he reluctantly gathered his papers and stuffed them into his briefcase, the words of Mark Twain echoed in his mind: Do something every day that you don't want to do; this is the golden rule for acquiring the habit of doing your duty without pain.

Murphy never tired of the scenic drive to school and the campus of Preston University. There was something deeply attractive about the lush greenery of the South and the beauty of the magnolia blossoms. Parking his car in the teachers' lot, he meandered up the tree-lined walkway toward his office near the Memorial Lecture Hall. The smell of jasmine in the air filled his senses.

Students were sitting under the trees. Some were studying, but most were just talking with their friends. One group tossed a Frisbee back and forth. Murphy recalled his days as a student. Life was so much simpler then. They don't even realize how great these years are.

The unbidden image of Laura swept across his mind, the moments of joy and laughter they had shared during their marriage. Those happy years before she had been murdered by Talon. The pain tore at his insides, and a sigh escaped his lips. He shook the memories away, unwilling to let the grief overwhelm him.

He reached his office, opened the door, and groaned. His desk was stacked high with student test papers and book reports that needed to be reviewed. I think I'll delegate those to Shari. She'll hate me, but isn't that what assistants are for? Doing all the jobs you don't like?

***

Shari had been in the laboratory for almost an hour. She was peering through a microscope at an envelope when Murphy entered.

"I know, I know. You're wondering what I'm doing here so early."

Murphy smiled a Cheshire cat grin as he looked at Shari. Her very light complexion and sparkling green eyes contrasted her black hair. The ponytails coming out from each side of her head were hanging down, almost covering the microscope. She had on her favorite white lab coat.

"I know you love it here," he said. "Maybe I should move in a bed and then you won't have to go home at night."

She looked up at him and wrinkled her nose. "Like you don't get involved in your work!"

"Who, me?" Murphy set his briefcase down. "What are you looking at?"

Shari sat up with a guilty look on her face. "Oh, just something that came in the mail for you."

"For me? Why are you looking at my mail through a microscope?"

She smiled, with a twinkle in her eye. "I'm just trying to protect you."

"Protect me from what?"

"From what I think might be inside."

"This all sounds very mysterious. What are you talking about?"

"I think it's a letter from your admirer," she said with a smirk.

"Let me guess. Does my admirer's name start with an M?"

"Not bad, Doc, for so early in the morning."

Shari handed the letter to Murphy. "I was comparing this handwriting with some of the other letters you've received from your deranged admirer. They're the same."

Murphy held the envelope up to the light and saw what looked like a three-by-five card inside.

"So why don't you open it?"

Murphy smiled. Shari was forever curious about anything that might be mysterious. He opened the envelope, took out the card, and began to read.

Row, row, row your boat gently around the lake
Walk and talk and have a piece of cake

Ride, ride, ride the trolley
Be sure to stop and visit Molly

Dance, dance, dance the choo-choo
Visit the zoo and casino too

Round, round, round you go
Don't be depressed by the big tornado

Search, search, search and find
Be sure not to lose your mind

Seek, seek, seek, like a mouse
You may even find a fun house

"So much for poetry!" said Shari. "What in the world do you think he means? Maybe he's finally lost it."

"Well, Methuselah is strange, eccentric, even sadistic . . . but he's not crazy. His clues and riddles have led us to many archaeological finds in the past." Murphy stroked his chin, lost in thought. "He must have some new trophy for us to search for."

"Can you make heads or tails of this one?"

Murphy ran his fingers through his brown hair and paced around the room. Shari just smiled and watched her boss. She knew it was best not to disturb him once the mental wheels were in motion.

Murphy went to his computer and got on the Internet. Shari stepped behind him and watched dubiously as he typed in the words "Amusement Parks." After another fifteen minutes of searching, he turned to her.

"I think I may have the answer to the riddle."

"Well, pray tell, Mr. Sherlock Holmes. Don't keep me in suspense."

"The first clue for me was the word 'trolley.' At the turn of the century, one of the main modes of transportation in larger cities was the electrical trolley line."

"So? What does that have to do with the rest of the riddle?"

"Hang on to your ponytails. It says here: Electrical companies in the early 1900s charged the trolley companies a straight fee for the use of electricity. Regardless of the number of people that rode the trolley, the electrical fee was the same. Owners of the trolleys tried to devise a way to get more customers to ride. The plan they settled on was to build amusement parks at the end of the trolley lines. This would encourage more travel and generate more revenue. Not a bad idea, huh?"

"I think maybe you're off your trolley this time."

"Cute, Shari. Just hear me out. The phrase 'visit Molly' is the key to the riddle. In 1910, Lakewood Amusement Park was built at the end of the trolley line in Charlotte, North Carolina. At that time it was three miles west of the city. Its design was similar to that of Coney Island and it became one of the most attractive parks in the South."

"How do you know all of this?"

"Genevieve Murphy."

"Who is Genevieve Murphy?"

"My grandmother. She used to live in Charlotte and I would visit her in the summers. She would tell me stories about growing up in the South. One of her stories was about a trolley park with a lake. I remember her talking about riding on a roller coaster. She loved it. She would ride it two or three times each time she visited the park."

"Go on, I'm still listening."

"Lakewood Park had a lake with rowboats–Row, row, row your boat gently around the lake. Walk and talk and have a piece of cake. The lake had a walkway around it with concession stands. They also had a half-mile-long roller coaster formerly called the Scenic Railway. Its nickname was Molly's Madness. My grandmother sometimes referred to it as 'riding old Molly.' The park also had a merry-go-round that could seat a hundred people. They had a shooting range. They had a petting zoo. They had a dance hall that was over part of the lake, and they had a casino. All of those attractions tie in with Methuselah's riddle."

"What about being depressed by the big tornado?"

"I think that's the clincher, Shari. In 1933, the Great Depression bankrupted Lakewood Park. People didn't have money to spend on rides and games. In 1936, a large tornado hit the area and trashed the park. The heavy rains that followed washed out the dam and caused the lake to overflow. Repairs were never made, and the park closed for good."

"Bummer. Is there anything remaining from the original park today?"

"No. I believe they built over that area years ago. There is one thing, however. There were rumors that the owners of the park were in the process of constructing an underground amusement area in the form of a fun house. It was supposed to have rolling barrels, slides, roller bridges, a human roulette wheel, a maze of mirrors, and a ride called the Tunnel of Fear."

"And all of that was going to be built underground?"

"That was the rumor. Maybe they did build it but didn't open it to the public. Maybe that's what the phrase Seek, seek, seek like a mouse–you may even find a fun house means. Methuselah is telling me to look for something. Probably old building records that date back to the 1930s. The fun house may still be there somewhere underground in Charlotte."

Shari recognized the glint in Murphy's eye. "You're not really going to try and find out, are you? Need I remind you that Methuselah has tried to kill you on a number of occasions?!"

"I know, I know. But his clues have helped us find the golden head of Nebuchadnezzar, Noah's Ark, and the famous Handwriting on the Wall. I'm curious as to what new archaeological find he might lead us to."

"That's just the problem. You're too curious.&...

From AudioFile
Paul Michael narrates Book Four of this prophetic fiction series in a mellow voice. This episode reveals the meaning behind biblical prophecies that predict a worldwide conspiracy. Archaeologist Michael Murphy's first meeting with the mysterious Methuselah ends the life-threatening riddles he used to draw Murphy into each adventure. A softly accented Irish brogue characterizes Michael's depiction of Isis, Murphy's friend and research partner. Many characters are portrayed with soft Italian accents in this Indiana Jones-style adventure. Michael skillfully captures the tension and personalities of the mysterious Seven and their goals of world dominion. Fast paced, well-plotted, and filled with rich characterizations, this thriller won't disappoint. G.D.W. © AudioFile 2006, Portland, Maine-- Copyright © AudioFile, Portland, Maine

Great Book, Just don't start here
By Amazon Customer
I have been introduced to the writing of Mr. Lahaye in this Babylon Rising series, and have found that I do enjoy his writing. this is a series about an archeologist named Micheal Murphy and his race against evil forces to find biblical treasures and keep them out of the hands of a mysterious group called the seven who want to launch a plan that will begin the end times.

This book is what I would call a transitional piece in that series and therefore I would highly recommend that the reader read the begiining of the series first, altough books 2 and 3 could read as a stand alone this book requires one to know the characters and the story line. I love this series and after reading this title can't wait for the next book in the series.

riveting thriller
By A Customer
At Preston College, biblical archeologist Michael Murphy receives another letter from Methuselah that contains a riddle. After figuring out what it means, Michael travels to the underground funhouse in Charlotte where he battles and defeats Ninja killers. He finds another riddle that he deciphers that focuses on Aaron's Rod and the Golden Jar of Manna that was in the Ark of the Covenant before it was lost to the Philistines.

Michael's friend Isis, also an archeologist, researches where those items might be found and determines the most likely spot is the Temple of Dagon in Israel Murphy, who loves finding artifacts that prove the genuineness of the bible sets off to make his latest discovery, but is unaware that an old adversary is following him with the intent of killing him before he interferes with the powerful plans of the Seven, a group who manipulates, from behind the scenes, world events; they want the False prophet brought to the attention of the globe in preparation for the Antichrist to rise tom power. Michael knows of the Seven from Methuselah, but refuses to let them scare him off his quest to prove that everything written in the bible is fact.

Book four of the Babylon Rising series provides deep explanations about the enigmatic Seven and their goals, who Methuselah is, and why he assists Murphy, and how the false prophets are fooling people. Murphy is an Indiana Jones type adventurer with strong beliefs in God that sustain him; he is flawed and prone to doubts when he makes difficult decisions as a modern day Diogenes hunting for the truth. Readers will enjoy his exploits as THE EDGE OF DARKNESS is a riveting thriller.
