The girls' mother was once a proud school principal who raised her brilliant daughters alone after her husband deserted them and then, because of her pride and fear of abandonment, convinced young Jane to give her newborn child up for adoption when the father wanted nothing to do with them. Jane has always regretted that decision and now wants to see her daughter. The opportunity arises when she meets her daughter's uncle, Dylan, who has lost his wife and daughter. Dylan and Jane both have an aura of tragedy about them. He and Jane become involved, and through him she develops a relationship with her daughter, Chloe, without revealing the fact that she is Chloe's birth mother. Great Summer Read

I always encourage my students to read anything but textbooks during their quarter breaks. This is one of the books I chose for myself! It was a great "sit by the pool" read and I actually read it in one day. It wasn't 'rocket science' and it kept my interest throughout. Maybe a little predictable at times, but immediately after finishing it, I picked up another Rice book (Beach Girls) and enjoyed another relaxing read. If you're looking for intense drama, look elsewhere. If you're looking for a 'feel good" read, this is what you want!!

Beautiful story, reminded me of "Home Fires," also by Luanne Rice. The setting for the story was wonderful and the characters were easy to get to know and love. This book could become a great movie!

Engrossing second chance love story

Jane Porter returns to her Rhode Island hometown to help her sister care for their ailing mother. Jane rarely makes the trip due to the painful memories that have scarred her even into adulthood. When she was a sophomore in college, her mother forced her to give up her child for adoption, and it was handled privately, with the baby girl going to a local family.

Dylan Chadwick has also returned home. After his wife and daughter were killed in a crossfire while he was a US Marshall, he has returned to the family apple orchard, determined to bring it back to life. He has forged a loving and protective relationship with his niece, who it turns out, is the child that Jane gave birth to 15 years earlier.

Coming home affords Jane with the opportunity to meet the child she could never forget. Soon, she is spending time with Dylan, who has suddenly come out of his shell, and has fallen for her. She too is smitten with Dylan, but worries that her motivations for being with him will be misconstrued once he finds out about her relationship to Chloe.

Dance with Me is an absorbing story about two lost souls who manage to find each other, only to find themselves at odds. The icy relationship between the sisters and the mother is believable and engrossing.

The World of Pat Conroy

Pat Conroy, in my opinion, is probably one of the best authors of our time. He has an ability to use words and blend them together like a chef might use spices in a secret recipe. I would recommed his books to anyone who wants to read something like they have never read before. Pat Conroy takes you on a roller coster ride through stories so well explained that you can feel that you are really there in the middle of the action. His characters are so detailed and real that you can relate to and get to know like your best friend. The World of Pat Conroy, is a box set which includes some of his best works. Each one I have read at least once, some I have read many times over and over even better than the time before. You should read these books if you want a real taste of the south and a new love for fine liturature.

Taylor's initial assignment is to retrieve a stolen document that could cost the firm a case and an attractive young litigator his job. The theft proves to be merely a subtext as one ferocious partner pushes for a merger, two older partners firmly oppose it and the rest of the principal players scramble for position while sides are drawn up. Taylor finds coked-up associates with grievances, partners with financial problems, and granddaughters to raise, not to mention call girls. Offices (including her own lowly hole in the wall) are soon bugged, and after an interminable wait, murder makes its entrance. Edgar-nominated Deaver ( Manhattan Is My Beat ) whips up enough atmosphere for a whole series here: late-night music, copious jazz lore, performance-art interludes, man troubles aplenty--the plucky Taylor partakes of them all. When a promissory note for $25 million due to a client bank is stolen from hotshot lawyer Mitchell Reece's office in Hubbard, White & Willis, he turns to an unlikely source for detective help--aspiring jazz pianist/paralegal Taylor Lockwood. Taylor is supposed to recover the note in time to prevent the debtor firm from wriggling out of the debt by declaring bankruptcy--and that client bank from pulling its business from the firm. As Taylor gets down to her investigation-- which consists mainly of fighting off the partners' propositions by day and pawing through their offices by night--upstart partner Wendall Clayton plots a merger of Hubbard, White & Willis with a new-money firm--a merger that will throw patrician senior partner Donald Burdick and his supporters to the wolves. The detective plot (torpid theft and, eventually, homicide) and the (far more engrossing) merger plot finally do come together, though not in time for Deaver (Hard News, etc.) to do either one justice. -- Copyright ©1992, Kirkus Associates, LP. I enjoy Deavers' books

I enjoy Deavers' books, but this one I didn't care for as much as the others I've read. I like the ones better that tell you about the different forensic things that are happening in the story.

Not as surprising as I'd hoped...

I found this, on the whole, an enjoyable read. After a suspenseful opening, it took a while for the plot to grab me again--perhaps because the issues at stake didn't seem to be of life-or-death importance. The excitement level picked up, however, as the story progressed. The writing is excellent, the main protagonist a well-drawn character.
But none of the intended surprises caught me off guard, not even what was meant to be the biggest. Is this the fault of the book (a plot conceived some dozen years ago, however the author has sought to improve it), or of my having read too much Deaver lately? I honestly can't say.

Twists and turns to the very last word

The long awaited Lassiter arrived on my ipad at the stoke of midnight and I immediately began reading. Levine eased us into the drama, introducing us to the cast of characters who would soon be alive in our minds as he continued to crank up the tension. Jack Lassiter was hunky and honorable and "O so Jake" as he tried to right wrongs in his own heroic way. At the 60% mark, this story had me up and at 'em until the very end. There was no stopping for food or sleep -- plot twists and turns and surprises until the very end. And then the satisfied sadness of finishing this great jaunt. Only to await the next novel by Paul Levine. A great read.

The nuances in the book made it hard to put down. Well written and a good read. Define toy gave a snapshot of a dirty world of ruthless people. Towards end, was easy to figure out the guilty. This one doesn't take away from quality of wire.

Lisa Gardner's "Say Goodbye" is a dark and unnerving tale of sadistic torture, child abuse, and murder. Shortly after the book opens, a tough-talking teenager named Ginny Jones gets in a car with a stranger. She quickly realizes her mistake when it becomes apparent that "this man was never, ever letting her go home." The villain is a deranged yet calculating individual who needs to be in control; he kidnaps boys and women and revels in the power that he has over them. He calls himself Dinchara (an anagram for arachnid), since he is obsessed with spiders. He owns a large collection of the eight-legged creatures, and tends to their every need with meticulous care. Gardner begins each chapter with a quotation that imparts more information about arachnids than most of us need to know.

The book's heroine is Kimberly Quincy, an FBI agent in the Atlanta Field Office. Kimberley, who is five months pregnant, is gorgeous, bright, and obsessed with her career. "She worked too hard, compartmentalized too little, and probably would have a nervous breakdown before the age of forty." Although she is happily anticipating the birth of her baby, she is also conflicted. How can she, in good conscience, risk her life and the welfare of her unborn child chasing down dangerous felons for a living? Still, she is reluctant to leave the profession that means so much to her. She and Michael McCormack, an agent with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, have been married for a year. They disagree on the issue of motherhood vs. career, and the resulting quarrel puts a strain on their relationship. Kimberly does not want history to repeat itself. Her father was an FBI agent "whose workaholic ways imploded his marriage."

Kimberly teams up with GBI Special Agent Salvadore Martignetti to find the aforementioned spider fancier who has allegedly committed a whole host of crimes and is still at large. As is common in novels of this type, the author includes italicized first person passages in which the perpetrator describes how and why he became a cold-blooded monster. Abuse begets abuse; it is a vicious circle that never seems to end. Fortunately, there are some merciful people in the world, such as Rita, a woman who is approaching her ninetieth birthday. For nearly twenty years, this formidable and courageous woman fostered nearly thirty homeless children and tried to set them on the right path. She plays a small but crucial role in the narrative.

Although her writing is not particularly elegant, Gardner ratchets up the suspense nicely. She keeps the plot moving at a fast pace and provides engrossing and carefully researched details about the functioning of Georgia's various law enforcement agencies. Except for the requisite twists and turns, however, the plot offers few surprises. The dialogue is stilted, the characters are generally one-dimensional, and the plot adheres closely to the standard serial killer formula. Be warned that there are quite a few disturbing scenes of graphic violence and brutality. This nightmarish novel is by no means a light beach read.

I agree with another one of the reviews already posted...this book was a decent mystery/thriller but so disturbing with regards to child abuse that I could not enjoy it, nor would I ever recommend it. I was a fan of Gardner's but hated this book. I am still bothered by many of the scenes. If you have kids, skip this one, seriously.

*I am not giving this book a low rating because Gardner wrote such vivid abuse scenes (I agree that they were not gratuitous and she probably did want to raise the profile of child abuse for a greater good). I am giving "Say Goodbye" a low rating because those same vivid scenes made it impossible for me to enjoy or like this book.
