Veteran anthologist Spignesi (Catastrophe! the 100 Greatest Disasters of All Time; The Essential Stephen King; etc.) makes his novel debut with this engrossing yet ultimately unsatisfying examination of a woman's transformation from sanctioned killer to murderer. Victoria "Tory" Troy is a euthanasia technician at a shelter in Connecticut whose primary job is to kill unclaimed animals every Friday in the facility's gas chamber. One Friday, instead of killing lost and unwanted pets, she contrives to inject her six co-workers with a paralyzing drug, then gases them to death. What follows is an often fascinating narrative carried out in dialogue form as Tory's case progresses through the judicial system. The first half of the book consists largely of interview sessions where a state-appointed psychiatrist assesses Tory's mental state at the time of the murders. Glimpses of Tory's writings and flashbacks to her troubled childhood heighten the tension. The prosecution's case, the trial and the jury's deliberations dominate the second half, also all in dialogue. Some of the exchanges that Spignesi includes do little to advance the plot, yet many are spellbindingly crafted. In the end, resolution—why did this woman do what she did?—is not forthcoming, and the finale falls back on one of the most shameless devices fiction writers can employ. Agent, John White.(May 3)

Spignesi's fiction debut is a mildly successful psychological thriller that owes more to its frightening central question (What makes a person kill?) than to the thrills themselves. The story unfolds slowly, written in a series of terse dialogues centering on Tory Troy, incarcerated in a psychiatric hospital, where her stability is being evaluated in preparation for her murder trial. She has admitted to killing six coworkers in the gas chamber of the animal shelter where she worked as a euthanasia technician. Tory speaks to the court-appointed psychiatrist, to her nurse, and to her mother. Lawyers argue; jurors deliberate. Throughout the process, readers come to see Tory as surprisingly normal, despite a history of child abuse. She emerges as a smart, intuitive, sometimes funny woman who loves animals (and has a credible rationale for her job, which is described in detail) and who seems to harbor no particular ax to grind against her fellow employees. I CAN'T BELIEVE ALL THE GREAT REVIEWS!

This book is a tease - it calls itself a novel of "suspense," but there is no real suspense, and any suspense that there actually is is left unrequited in the end. You go through the entire book waiting to find out why Tory killed her six co-workers. You never find out, and the ending is the biggest cop-out since "Son of Rosemary, The Sequel to Rosemary's Baby". How could the publisher have allowed the author to end this book in that cliched fashion? I felt truly cheated.

Spignesi breaks new ground in impressive fiction debut

After a lifetime of writing nonfiction on every possible conceivable--and some clearly inconceivable--subject under the sun, Stephen Spignesi switches gears and wrote his first novel. As most writers well tell you, switching gears like this isn't easy: Stephen King, in fact, is on record saying that he rarely writes book-length fiction because, as he discovered, after writing DANSE MACABRE, it's plain hard work, whereas storytelling (i.e., writing fiction) is for him like stretching out in a hammock on a warm summer afternoon.

With this book, Spignesi has gone into high gear. Rather than self-publish, publish an e-book, or publish this as a print-on-demand book -- all the things lesser writers do just in an attempt to get in print -- Spignesi set his sights high and went to the largest publisher in the world, Random House, where he found the kind of enthusiasm for the work he was looking for. The result is the right author at the right house, and the result for you, the reader, is a compelling, unputdownable read from page on to the final page.

More a novel of character than plot, Spignesi gets deep inside the head of Victoria ("Tory") Troy. Most of the book, as the title suggests, is written in dialogue, which is a neat trick to pull off: I can't think of a lot of veteran fiction writers who would have attempted it, since writing convincing dialogue is damned tough. One false note, one misplaced word, and the dialogue sounds, and reads, like pulp fiction.

Of the story itself, I would be doing you a disservice if I were to tell you the plot. Besides, it ain't the plot that's important -- it's the telling. Spignesi, who has dozens of nonfiction books under his belt, has an authoritative storytelling voice that serves him well in his fiction. The confidence he shows in the storytelling is more like that of a veteran storyteller who knows his craft. Spignesi knows what he's doing.

And of the ending, well, don't expect me to tell you the butler did it. Go read this fascinating, intriguing, compelling, and damned impressive first novel for yourself and make up your own mind.

This is an impressive first fiction debut and heralds the arrival of a new, important voice of a writer who goes on my list of Writers to Watch.

A Fascinating, Gripping Suspense Novel.

'Dialogues' is a "MUST READ" for all fans of suspense, drama, horror, mystery, legal thrillers! It's the gripping tale of a young woman named Victoria (Tory) Troy. Though young, she's exceptionally bright, has a very charming personality, and has formed many insightful concepts about how the world, and the people in it, treat each other... and animals. She's an animal lover at heart, but has decided to take a job as a Euthanasia Technician at a local Connecticut Animal Shelter. Every Friday, she's in charge of the detestable act of putting large numbers of animals "to sleep." She hates her job, obviously, but needs the money to survive. Unfortunately, her job finally gets to her, and she snaps under the pressure. Six people are now dead.

Enter Dr. Baraku Bexley. Bexley, the doctor assigned to her case, at the local Psychiatric Hospital, where Tory now resides under lock and key, interviews Tory extensively to determine if she's fit to stand trial. Through many conversations (dialogues) with Tory, her family, a former teacher, and others involved in the case, Bexley makes an informed decision. Now, it's in the hands of the Jury.

This is a captivating, "can't put down" book! From Prolugue to Epilogue, Stephen Spignesi takes the reader on an unforgettable journey. "Tory's story" is beautifully crafted, with an ending that packs a punch!

On a more personal level, I've read many of Spignesi's non-fiction books: all his Stephen King work, The Robin Williams Scrapbook, The Odd Index, The Cat Book of Lists, The Complete Titanic, What's Your Mad About You I.Q., What's Your Friends I.Q, just to name a few. So I was already aware that he's an exceptional writer!

Dialogues, his first novel, blew me away. It went so far beyond my expectations of what a "first novel" could be. It's well thought out, it's brilliantly written, the characters evolve from "words on a page," into real people. Their voices, through the many dialogues, are heard loud and clear. The crime is gruesome, yet - I believe - Tory will remain beloved to all who read the story that unfolds.

She was too angry to be afraid. The injection they’d given her had acted quickly, and she was hardly surprised to awaken in the small cabin of a boat. She held her aching head with one hand and sat up on the bunk, gazing out the porthole at the open sea. That also didn’t surprise her. It was sometime around midafternoon, she guessed. The day after the afternoon they’d shanghaied her. She’d slept a long time.

And she didn’t have to look at a map to know that she was somewhere off the northern coast of South America.

They hadn’t hurt her. In fact, her kidnappers had sustained considerable damage themselves from her struggles, because they’d been taking great pains not to hurt her. And she understood why, of course.

Andres would have them shot if they harmed her.

The cabin was small, but there was enough room to stretch the kinks from her legs. On a small table near the bunk she discovered a tray covered with a linen napkin, under which reposed an appetizing meal of cold chicken and salad. She ignored the food but poured a glass of wine from the carafe and sipped it.

Pacing the restricted floor space absently, she stretched aching muscles and automatically straightened her clothing--snug, faded blue jeans and a casual summer blouse the same color as her eyes.

As the last of the cobwebs cleared from her mind, she sighed and opened the door, unsurprised to find that it wasn’t locked. Where, after all, could she escape to? She went up the steps and onto the deck, squinting into the bright sunlight.

“Good afternoon, miss.”

She looked at the man who had spoken. He was a lean, hard man somewhere in his thirties, with soulful eyes and a rather chillingly gentle smile. She didn’t know him.

“Hello.” Somewhat mockingly she saluted him with her wineglass.

“The food--”

“I wasn’t hungry.”

He half bowed, oddly graceful. “I am the captain, miss.”

She nodded. “When will we arrive?”

“In a few hours.”

After a long silence she sighed. “I don’t suppose,” she said, “there’s a boat I could steal to make good my escape?”

He blinked. “No, miss.”

“And I also don’t suppose it would be at all wise of me to jump overboard and try swimming for it?”

“No, miss.”

“Then don’t bother to hover over me, Captain,” she said, and turned away to walk toward the bow.

Siran grimaced faintly, half in admiration and half in doubt. An interesting woman, his passenger. The men who had brought her to the ship off Trinidad had borne ample proof of her ability to defend herself, yet she seemed perfectly calm now. He watched her critically for a moment.

She was a tiny woman, barely five feet tall if that, dressed casually in jeans, a green blouse, and running shoes. And though another woman would have probably called her petite, no man worth his salt would have missed the surprisingly lush curves of breasts and hips, guaranteed to stop traffic and haunt dreams.

Her hair was that rare, striking color between red and gold, and it hung thick and shining to the middle of her back. It was styled simply in a layered cut from a center part, and that silky, burnished hair framed a face that was almost too delicately perfect to be real. She was like a painting; every feature was finely drawn with artistic excellence, from her straight nose to the sweet curve of her lips. And in that strikingly perfect face, her eyes were simply incredible: a clear, pale green; huge and shadowed by long, thick lashes.

Siran remembered another woman on a yacht under his command, a woman so like this one that they could have been twins. From what he had seen and heard, that woman had found love on her trips to Kadeira. What would this woman find?

She didn’t hear him leave over the noises of wind, ocean, and engine, yet she knew when the captain had finally left her alone. An unsettling man, she thought vaguely. She didn’t fear being alone with him on the small boat and felt a flicker of emotion that was a painful inner laugh when she came to this realization. There wasn’t much about Andres Sereno of which she could be certain--except the fact that anyone in his employ knew only too well that she had to be kept safe. So she was. A bird in a gilded cage. No, not that, not really. Kadeira was a beautiful island but war-torn. And Sereno, though a powerful man, had chosen to build his country rather than his own personal wealth. The “palace” was a large, comfortable house, but there was nothing gilded about it.

She stood there at the bow, face into the wind, trying not to think. Trying not to remember.

But when the island first came into view, she was surprised by the surge of emotion she felt, and unnerved by the flood of memories that came to mind. It was such a beautiful island, especially from a distance--before the underlying rot became visible.

She flung the empty wineglass overboard with a stifled cry, then gripped the brass railing hard as she stiffened her shoulders and began dragging all the emotions into the dark room where she’d placed them more than two years ago. By the time the harbor came into view, she was calm again.

Not much had changed in two years, she thought. Not, at least, at first glance. It was a good harbor with plenty of room for the score of vessels riding at anchor and tied up to the dock. Except for a few fishing boats, all were military vessels, and all were armed to the teeth.

A cluster of buildings, mostly warehouses, stood near the dock. Off to the left was the striking vista of towering mountains and rolling hills that helped to make the island so beautiful, and off to the right, whitewashed and shining in the bright sunlight, was the island’s only real city, and the home of most of its people.

No building rose more than five stories, and all the bright whitewash couldn’t hide the scars of a country in turmoil. There was some construction going on but not much, and shorn buildings showed like broken teeth in the rubble of the bombed remains of cars, trucks, and buildings.

She swallowed hard, still fighting for emotional control. Nothing had changed, not really. She had kept up with news reports almost against her will, and knew that the “rebels” still came down from the hills and raided periodically, making it impossible for Sereno to put his economic development plans into effect. Kadeira was a torn country, a wound bleeding its life away.

Soldiers on the docks slung their rifles over their shoulders long enough to tie up the boat, and she paused only a moment to once more give the captain a mocking salute before jumping onto the dock. Ignoring the soldiers, she walked steadily forward to greet the slender man with a military carriage who was waiting for her near a long black limo.

“Colonel,” she said briefly.

“Miss Marsh.” Expressionless, he held the door for her.

She got into the car and looked steadily out the window during the ride, saying nothing more to Colonel Durant. She had liked him once, but she was afraid to let herself feel anything right now. They drove by the old presidential palace, now a hospital. And if she winced at the evidence of recent fighting--buildings she remembered as relatively intact were now in rubble--at least it was inwardly.

The limo passed through the guarded gates and wound its way up the drive to the plain stucco two-storied house. As she got out of the car she saw that the flowers she’d planted in window boxes were still alive and obviously cared for. But the bars on the windows, ornate though they were, were still visible, still a grim testament to their purpose--like the soldiers who constantly patrolled the grounds.

She followed Colonel Durant into the house, steeling herself against her memories. When he silently indicated that she should wait in the book-lined room she had once loved, she went in with gritted teeth.

The memories . . . She went to the French doors and stared out into the garden, her cold hands in the pockets of her jeans, her back stiff. Oh, Lord, the memories!

“Sara?”

She didn’t move, didn’t say a word. Her eyes closed and she swallowed hard. For a long moment she stood with her back to him, wondering dimly how many times she had heard his voice say her name--in her dreams.

Sara Marsh moved slowly, bracing herself even more as she turned to face him. He hadn’t changed much in two years. He was unusual among his countrymen in that he was over six feet tall and powerfully built. He was dressed casually in dark slacks and a white shirt unbuttoned at the throat beneath an open jacket, but the informal attire did nothing to conceal the physical strength of broad shoulders and powerful limbs, or the honed grace of his movements when he stepped toward her. He was dark, black-haired, and black-eyed, his lean face handsome and bearing none of the outward marks or scars of his reportedly difficult and violent life.

Perhaps he was a shade leaner, the planes and angles of his face sharper, his eyes more deeply hooded. And there were, she saw with a curious pang, a few strands of silver among the ebony at his temples.

And she knew then that she had forgotten nothing. Nothing at all.

He was Andres Sereno, President of the island country of Kadeira, commander in chief of its army and navy, both titles earned by sweat and blood and viewed askance by an American government that had never been quite sure if he was enemy, friend, or merely neutral. He had been called a dictator--and worse.

“Hello, Andres.” Her voice emerged cool and calm, and she thanked the fates for control.

He took another step toward her, and the quiet, innately powerful voice that had moved the people of his country was a little rough, a little husky. “You’re as beautiful as I remembered.”

Sara inclined her head politely.

His face tightened a little. “Sara, I know you’re angry with me, but I--I had to bring you here.”

“I’m here. I had no choice in the matter. But then, I should have known my wishes didn’t mean a damned thing to you. I made it clear two years ago that I never wanted to see you again, yet I’ve been on the run ever since in order to stay one jump ahead of your hounds.”

He shoved his hands into his pockets suddenly, matching her stance as they confronted each other. “Am I allowed no defense? No opportunity to explain my actions? I needed to see you, Sara. I didn’t want to do this, but you gave me no choice.”

Sara didn’t have to fake scorn. “Oh, it’s all my fault that I was kidnapped? Was I supposed to just tamely submit to your paid goons and come along like a good little girl?”

“They didn’t hurt you?” he asked swiftly.

“No,” she said flatly.

Andres relaxed almost imperceptibly. “Sara, I tried to respect your wishes. And I would have, if only you hadn’t vanished so completely. The letters I sent to your sister’s home were returned unopened. When I called, she refused to tell me where you were. What else could I do?”

“You could have left me alone!” she said fiercely.

“No, Sara, I couldn’t.” Softly he added, “Because I love you.”

It shook her now as it had shaken her in the past, and Sara wondered wildly how a man so shut in and as remote as Andres could make that declaration so easily--and so convincingly. She drew a deep breath. “I don’t care.” She did, but that was something he could never know. “Whatever I might have felt for you died the day I found out those terrorists were on Kadeira.”

“They’re gone now,” he told her.

“And that makes everything all right?” She could feel all her muscles tensing, and her stomach churning sickly when she thought of the terrorists. “Let me go, Andres.”

“I can’t.”

Sara was aware of an inner tremor, and knew that her control was right on the edge, faltering. She didn’t know how much more of this she could take. “Do you know what my life’s been like for the past two years?” she asked steadily.

“Sara--”

“It’s been hell. I’ve developed the instincts of a hunted animal. I can’t walk down a street without searching every face, tensing at every sound. I can’t have a home, because it’s a lot easier and quicker to run from a hotel or a lousy apartment. I can’t have friends, because I don’t know who to trust. I haven’t been able to do a damned thing with my life, and if I didn’t happen to have income from my parents’ estate, I wouldn’t even have been able to live, except from hand to mouth, because I can’t hold down a job! Is that what you wanted, Andres? Is that how you meant to punish me for leaving you?”

His face was white, his eyes bottomless. After a moment he turned and moved a few feet away before turning back to face her. His smile was twisted. “You could always make me feel things I didn’t want to feel. That hasn’t changed.”

She wanted to cry. “Let me go.”

He shook his head a little and said, “I have a proposition for you.”

Sara waited, tense and afraid.

“A month. Remain on Kadeira for a month. If, after that, you wish to leave, then I’ll see that you’re taken back to the States.” His voice was even. “And I’ll give you my word of honor that I’ll never interfere in your life again.”

The silence was long as Sara tried to figure out what he was up to. “What do you expect to happen in a month?”

“I want . . .” He hesitated, then finished roughly, “I want the time with you, that’s all. Is it so difficult for you to understand?”

“You want me to stay here, in your home?”

He sighed. “It’s safer, you know that. Of course, you’ll have your own suite of rooms.”

Two years ago he hadn’t tried to take advantage of her confusion, hadn’t insisted on a physical relationship even though the attraction had been explosive; she wasn’t sure about his attitude now. “And if I--I refuse your proposition?”

Andres seemed to brace himself. “I can’t let you go.”

let down from Hooper

Kay Hooper has been one of my favorite authors for a very long time so when I saw this title I automatically ordered it. What a let down!!! This weak story seems to have been written by a poor beginning author - no suspense, tepid romance. Even though I've tried to finish the book three times, I doubt there will be a fourth try. Bummer.

Romantic and Complex Especially for a Category Romance

"I needed to see you, Sara. I didn't want to do this, but you gave me no choice."

FINAL DECISION: Lush and romantic and a sweet little gem of a category romance, SHADES OF GRAY has a hero that will do anything for the heroine and a woman who learns how strong she really is.

THE STORY: Two years ago Sara Marsh fell in love with the president/dictator of a small island nation and was blissfully in love until she found out that he had given sanctuary to a group of terrorists. She ran from him and has been running ever since. Andres Sereno has struggled to free his country from the ravages of war and establish a lasting peace. Nothing is black and white to him except for his love for Sara. Fearing she is in danger, Andres has her kidnapped and brought back to Kadeira.

OPINION: One of my favorite of the series. The book is one of the most complex because Andres is a complex character. He is a man who has to sometimes do hard and difficult things in order to bring about good. Unlike others books in the series, this book openly acknowledges the "shades of gray" in wielding power. There is something seductive about this strong determined man being completely helpless in the face of his love for Sara. He is truly willing to do anything for his lady love. This is a little gem of a book and amongst my keepers.

WORTH MENTIONING: This story completes the storyline that began in RAFFERTY'S WIFE.

CONNECTED BOOKS: SHADES OF GRAY is the seventh book in the Hagen series. It can be read as a standalone but is much better as part of the series.

STAR RATING: I give this book 5 stars.

Odd Thomas came to me as a gift, the entire first chapter of his first book having poured out of me as I was in the middle of writing The Face. I wrote it by hand, though I never work that way, and I never hesitated to think what should come next. He was fully-realized in my mind from the moment I began to write in that lined legal tablet. With other stories and characters, I can identify the source of the inspiration, but not with Oddie and his books. He just suddenly was. When I write about him, his narrative voice is so clear to me that I almost hear him in my head.

For those among you who long have thought that I should be institutionalized, just relax: I said I almost hear him.

Many times over the years, I said I would never write an open-ended series. Then along came Oddie, and he proved me wrong. Or so I thought. As I wrote the first chapter of Odd Hours, the fourth featuring my fry-cook hero, I realized that this was not an open-ended series, after all, but that it would conclude with six or seven novels. I now think seven.

I suddenly saw the end point of his journey, the arc of it to the final book, and I was stunned. Beginning with this fourth story, the stakes were being raised dramatically; Oddie was going to face far more physical and moral danger than previously; and he was going to mature toward the fulfillment of a destiny that I had not seen coming until that moment.

Initially, I tried to argue myself out of the direction that Odd Hours was taking. I didn't believe that the first three books had put down a sufficient foundation to support the formidable architecture that I saw rising from it in the next three or four novels.

When I began to reread the first three books, however, I quickly discovered that I had unconsciously paved the road that the series was now taking. I had thought I was writing a series with an overall theme about the power and beauty of humility. Indeed I was, but it was also something more than that; and Oddie's ultimate destiny will not be merely purification to a state of absolute humility, but will be that and something else I find quite wonderful.

What lies ahead will be a challenge to write--or perhaps not. The character of Odd Thomas was a gift to me, and now I see that the entire architecture of a seven-book series was another gift that came to me complete on the same day Oddie arrived, although I needed time to recognize it.

This world is a place of wonder, and life is a mysterious enterprise; but nothing in all my years has been more mysterious than Odd Thomas's origins and my compulsion to write about him.

The fourth adventure of Odd Thomas, the young man haunted by the deceased who can also foresee potential murderous disaster, may not be the best—his eponymous initial outing is—but darned if it isn’t the most purely entertaining. Observing Koontz’s SOP, it starts with a bang and goes like a house afire straight through to the penultimate chapter (the last chapter cleans up). Odd goes out for a walk on the boardwalk to find the Lady of the Bell, a pregnant girl roughly his own age (21), who has appeared to him in a troubling dream. He succeeds, but then a blond gorilla and two skinny redheaded guys packing heat show up. When Odd touches the gorilla, he gets a flash of the dream. So does the gorilla, who is immediately, murderously suspicious, so Odd, after sending the girl packing, takes a header off the boardwalk. For most of the rest of the book, Odd flees the three baddies, discovering that the local police chief and a liberal minister are in cahoots with them, until he reverses the procedure to prevent very serious destruction, indeed, aimed at regime change in America. Probably the Best of the Odd Thomas Sequels

Dean Koontz is one of my favorite genre writers, and the original ODD THOMAS novel is my second favorite of his books, right after his 1987 novel WATCHERS. Given the enormously favorable response to ODD THOMAS, Koontz decided to turn the book into a series, and now plans to write six or seven novels featuring the character. ODD HOURS is the fourth book in the sequence, and is probably the best of the sequels so far.

If you've read ODD THOMAS (and you MUST read the four novels in order to properly enjoy them) you know that these books are a unique combination of suspense, dark comedy, and spiritual uplift. Odd is a character with a very unique voice, one that I very much enjoy listening to. The pleasure of the Odd Thomas novels is not really the plots, which are often thin and unrealistic. Instead, the pleasure is in watching how Odd wryly reacts to all the insanity taking place around him. The results are often hilariously funny, yet at the same time emotionally moving. There are no other books quite like them.

In ODD HOURS, the story involves a terrorist plot to smuggle nuclear weapons into a small California coastal town. This plot is in no way believable. But again, Koontz simply uses this rather silly storyline as an excuse to allow Odd to have another wild adventure, encounter another cast of eccentric characters, and pontificate about the absurd yet wonderful nature of life. After a slightly slow start, this novel works wonderfully well at this level. The end result is the best Koontz book I've read for quite some time.

Admittedly, ODD HOURS isn't for everyone. Some readers I know have lamented Koontz's new style of writing, often proclaiming that his books aren't as well written as his horror novels of the 1980s and early 1990s. I respectfully disagree. Koontz, like any other good writer, has evolved with age, and has become more philosophical and spiritual in his storytelling. Still, if you dislike Koontz's newer books, there is an excellent chance you won't like this one either.

But if you're new to Koontz, I hope you give his ODD THOMAS novels a try. Koontz is the exact opposite of a nihilistic writer: he believes there is a moral purpose to life, and that people must understand that purpose and act consistently with it. In our cynical age, I find that perspective refreshing, and I enjoy the Odd Thomas novels for that reason. I look forward to the fifth installment in this great series.

I really enjoyed the previous Odd Thomas books, especially the first one. I do not think this book stands alone. If you have not read the others I think you will be completely lost. Having read the others I have such mixed feelings!

I love the dialog and humor of Odd Thomas with Hutch, Utgard, and Chief Hoss Sackett. The downright profound observations made with Birdie on pages 218 and 219 were amazing! Yet the dialog with Annamaria drove me nuts.

The first scene at the pier seemed endless... had I not read his other books I would not have read beyond this point. What was with the coyotes??? The bell??? The sea glass??? The grate with the lightning bolt ring???

I love the character of Odd and thought Birdie could make a very interesting main character someday. Blossom was another very interesting character. I wanted so much to like this book. I think generally speaking Dean Koontz is a wonderful, thoughtful, and witty writer and yet this book disappointed me.

I hope he can make Annamaria a more interesting person in the next book... yes I will read the next one.

I really like Dean Koontz. Not every book can be the best one. When you've written as many books as he has there are bound to be some that are better than others. I hope he doesn't get discouraged by negative comments because we will all lose if he doesn't continue to share his observations, humor, and creative ideas - they are a gift.

Another hit for Koontz....not at all odd.

It should go without saying that at this point in his career Dean Koontz is an absolute master at devising and then executing a story. Throughout his career, Koontz has continued to develop as an author with each new story better than the previous one. In his Odd Thomas series this is certainly true.

It began with Odd Thomas, a strange young fellow living in a small California town of Pico Mundo and working as a fry cook. Then came Forever Odd, Brother Odd and now Odd Hours. Odd Thomas, the fry cook, has remained a steadfast character from the first book to the fourth even though life has not been kind to him. But while Odd has remained the same humble, innocent, and generally good guy he has always been, he has continued to develop as a character with new facets added in each story. Odd has had two companions, a ghost dog name Boo and his long time friend Elvis Presley. In Odd Hours, Elvis is seemingly replaced with Frank Sinatra.

In Odd Hours, Odd is faced with perhaps his most profound challenge yet. A dream and all encompassing red tide haunts Odd. At the close of Brother Odd, Odd wants nothing more than to return to Pico Mundo and resume his quiet life as a fry cook. However, fate steps in and he lands in a small coastal town of Magic Beach working for a former movie actor and author of childrens books. With terrific characters such as Annamarie and Brush Cut, Koontz has written another terrific page turner. Packed with suspense, a dark eerieness, fast action, and tight plot, Odd Hours will not disappoint. You'll have to suspend plausibility, but you'll enjoy this fourth Odd Thomas installment.

I highly recommend.

WOW! What a story. You will race to the end of this one to find out who did it. Lots of plot twists. The story grabs you from the beginning and doesn't let go. Good love story complicated by murder and an inability to trust. Great characters that you truly care for and just plain great story telling. This is a must read....

Thrilling Passionate Regency Romance

The opening pages of this romantic intrigue has the heiress Sara Carstairs, appearing to the public as a demure, respectable beautiful young girl, on trial for the murder of her sister�s husband. Public opinion had her condemned as not only a cold-blooded murderess but as a scarlet woman whose sexual appetite was legendary. Max Worthe, Lord Maxwell, owner of The Courier was mesmerized by her cool, unattached demeanor so that when the verdict came down as not guilty and she was acquitted of the crime, he was bound and determined to uncover the truth. When Sara Carstairs is acquitted of the murder of her brother-in-law, Max Worthe knows instinctively that she is hiding something, especially when she disappears without a trace after the trial. For the next three years, he uses his newspaper to keep the story alive and find the truth of what really happened the night William Neville disappeared. After a chance meeting with Sara herself, Max is angry at himself for being very attracted to a woman he believes is a murdering slut. Despite his feelings, Sara is apparently in some serious trouble and he is determined to help her whether she wants it or not. Sara's feelings for Max are just as jumbled. She hates him for the condemnation he has subjected her to in his newspaper, but is also mutually attracted to him. However, someone wants her dead and Max isn't giving her a choice in his protection so she grudgingly accepts his help. Together, they come up with a plan to draw out her enemy but the closer they get to the truth, the more desperate he becomes and the more danger they are in.
Strangers At Dawn is a definite page-turner with great characters. The two leads are strong people who are very likable. I wasn't sure if I would like Max at first. He comes off in the beginning as very judgmental and harsh, but he develops into a great hero and he is able to own up to his mistakes and apologize. And don't we all secretly want someone like Max who is determined to protect and defend us? Sara is also a very lovable heroine. She's strong, caring and mature. She's had a very hard life, but she doesn't let it warp her. This is my first story by Elizabeth Thornton and I was very impressed. I'll have to read more of her work.

delightful psychic thriller

The small Louisiana town of Silence is anything but quiet these days. Four men in eight months have been killed and the townsfolk are afraid; they want the police to catch the killer quickly. The only problem is the police are totally stymied so the mayor has asked the FBI to come in since their profile suggests that the murderer is a local cop.

Nell Gallagher ran away from Silence when she was seventeen, but has returned twelve years later to settle the family estate. Since she is also a FBI agent, she is able to work undercover without anyone questioning her motives. She must deal with rancher Max Tanner, who needs to know why Nell closed the door on their relationship to run away after they made love for the first time.

Kay Hooper's, psychic thrillers are always a delightful reading experience and WHISPER OF EVIL is no exception. Characters from previous works lend a sense of continuity to the story line and readers will be glad to reunite with favorites who feel like friends. The plot is complex and has so many unexpected twists and turns that readers won't be able to predict what happens next. This is a one sitting read that will find its' way to the reader's keeper shelf.

In the current climate, the threat of drug cartels feels dated and Chavez is such an over-the-top nasty that he's downright silly. Add to that a melodramatic anti-heroine, who's also a cliched assassin-with-a-heart-of-gold seeking spiritual redemption, and a Southeastern climax that's as '80s as Miami Vice, and the sum total becomes a derivative stew. Johansen has delivered better in the past and hopefully will again in the future.

She wants Chavez dead, preferably by her own hand, but things get out of hand at the DEA safe house, and Elena has no one to turn to but Galen. He recognizes her as a kindred soul, but they don't know whom else they can trust because Chavez controls an extensive drug empire, and has enormous wealth at his disposal. What with its taut plot and complex characters, this is vintage, fan-pleasing Johansen. Patty Engelmann

Sean Galen Deserved So Much Better!

I am a big fan of the Eve Duncan series, and through that series was introduced to Sean Galen. I almost skipped this book (wish I had), but I thought the character of Sean Galen was so great that I didn't want to miss his book. I felt the character was done a complete disservice with this book. I felt none of the spunk or witty behavior that he exuded with Eve. I lost the sexy vibe which made his character so interesting. Pairing him with a hard woman like Elena seemed bitter to me, and I wanted his life to be sweet. Not sappy, but to feel good going down. This story was tough to swallow, especially the suspension of disbelief I would have needed to believe he could actually fall for this gal. Ah well - every Eve Duncan series male cannot make as good a match as Logan and his Sarah; but for Sean I wanted better.

"Well, hell." Rylan Quaid sighed, leaning his elbows on the picnic table. His gray-green eyes were narrowed against the brilliance of the sun slipping over the Blue Ridge Mountains in the distance. He stared at the woman sitting across from him and took a slow, deep breath. "I suppose we could just as well get married."

Maggie McSwain choked on the champagne she'd been drinking to toast her best friend's marriage. The sparkling gold liquid sloshed out of her glass and skittered down the satin bodice of her pink bridesmaid's dress, leaving a dark trail in its wake. She stared at the big man, a wild combination of emotions surging through her: panic, disbelief, soaring joy, and crushing disappointment. "P-pardon me?"

Ry's straight dark brows drew together in irritation. He wasn't a patient man; he didn't like having to ask twice. Now that he'd decided to marry Mary Margaret McSwain, he wanted her to just say yes and have it done with. He stubbornly ignored the ripple of nerves in his stomach. Of course he wasn't nervous, he assured himself. What did he have to be nervous about?

"I said," he drawled with a hint of his characteristic sarcasm. "I suppose we could just as well get married."

Maggie sat back and stared at him, quite beyond words. Here they were at the wedding reception of her best friend, Rylan's sister, Katie. It had been a glorious day, full of fun and love and romance, and now the man she had secretly loved for years had proposed to her. Oh, she had envisioned Rylan Quaid asking her to marry him. She'd fantasized about it a zillion times. Reality was proving to be a trifle less idyllic. She wondered wildly if he would have settled for any woman who had happened to sit down across from him. That certainly seemed to be his attitude.

She'd been going out with him for eight weeks. Of course, she had known him for ages. She and Katie Quaid had been friends since their freshman year at William and Mary, nine years ago. Maggie had fallen up to her ears in puppy love the instant she'd laid eyes on her roommate's older brother.

Rylan Quaid had been big and masculine and dangerous in a male animal sort of way. He hadn't had the time of day for her, but Maggie had dreamed about him endlessly. She had flunked out of calculus because the only figure she had been able to concentrate on had been Rylan's.

Well, he'd finally taken notice of her. After nine years of dreaming about him and flirting with him, he'd finally asked her out. After eight weeks of dating, he'd asked her to marry him. She should have been ecstatic. She should have been dancing on the table.

She wanted to brain him with the nearest heavy object.

"Let me get this straight, sugar," she said, deceptively calm, her voice all magnolias and honey. "You suppose we could just as well get married?"

Ry grunted, forking up a mouthful of potato salad. He had it all figured out. He wasn't getting any younger. He was thirty-four; it was high time he settled down and had some kids. Maggie was the ideal choice for his wife. She was fun, feisty, willing, and able to stand up to him. Willing to go out with him had been a major prerequisite—he wasn't exactly the most handsome guy in the commonwealth of Virginia.

Maggie wasn't hard to look at either. In fact, he imagined a man could get lost taking in the view of her generous hourglass figure and big brown eyes. He even liked her dark sorrel red hair, which bounced around her head in a perky bob.

They were perfectly suited. Getting married was the practical thing, Ry told himself, deliberately cutting his heart out of the thought process. He had learned long ago to be a practical man. Romance was for poets and idiots and a few lucky people like his sister and her new husband. His one attempt at it had been a miserable disaster, one he wasn't going to repeat.

Certainly he had some tender feelings for Maggie. He cared about her—the way any human being cared for another human being. He was attracted to her—the way any man with eyes in his head would be attracted to her. He would have cheerfully choked any stray male who wandered too close to her.

He wasn't in love with her. He would have sworn up and down he wasn't in love with her. The feelings he experienced around Maggie weren't love, couldn't be love, because he had taken a solemn vow never to fall in love again.

When his mother had walked out on the family, Ry had watched love destroy his father. With stars in his eyes, Tom Quaid had made promises he couldn't keep to a woman who had never wanted his way of life. Bitterness in Joanne had grown and soured and hardened over the years. When she finally walked out, she left her husband desolate. The man had gone on loving a woman who felt nothing for him but contempt.

Ry had had his own experience with love, or something like it, when he'd been nineteen and just young enough to hope, young enough to want to be proven wrong about love. He'd fallen hard for a girl who was in love with his image as a budding college football star. When he'd been forced to leave school to take over the farm, she had made it abundantly clear that she had been more interested in the football jersey than the man who'd worn it.

Ry had given up on the concept of romantic love then, at least as it pertained to him. He simply wasn't loveable. Women fell in love with men like his horse trainer, Christian Atherton, or Nick Leone, Katie's husband—handsome, charming men, not big rough farmers who didn't have the time or the inclination to be suave and charming.

Love was more trouble than it was worth anyway. As far as he was concerned, marriage was a partnership, and partners needed to be compatible, not in love with each other. Love was too tenuous a thing, too transient. It came and it went. Solid partnerships were enduring.

Maggie sat back and folded her hands on the lap of her champagne-stained dress. Ry hadn't said one word about love. He hadn't even said he wanted to marry her. He made it sound as if he had suddenly grown weary of being single and had decided to settle for her instead of looking further. She felt as if she were something being picked out at Kmart because he was too lazy to go across town to a fancier store.

The hurting started around her heart and spread out in ever-widening concentric circles until even her toenails ached. Her hair ached. Her eyelashes ached as she stared at the big, rugged man across the table from her.

He wasn't handsome by movie star standards. Handsome was too tame a word for Rylan Quaid, too pretty a word. The hard, angular planes of his face could have been chiseled from granite. His cheekbones were too high, his gray-green eyes too narrow. He was hardly a slave to fashion, and he combed his dark hair whichever way it happened to be leaning when he got out of bed in the morning. With his bold, high-bridged nose and fierce expression, he made her think of an eagle or some equally predatory creature.

No, he wasn't a handsome man, but he was all man. He was six feet four inches of raw, roped-with-muscle masculinity. Just looking at him made Maggie's blood heat—and she had done little more than look over the past eight weeks. Heaven only knew why. She had certainly wanted to do more than look. The hunger in Ry's kisses at the end of each of their dates had made her think he wanted more too. Yet he hadn't once suggested they go to bed. Nor had he explained why he apparently didn't want to. And now he was asking her to marry him.

Somehow the proposal seemed even more impersonal because they hadn't been intimate—no, it was because he seemed indifferent to the fact that they hadn't been intimate. If he had explained to her that he was old-fashioned and believed in waiting until marriage, she no doubt would have been touched by the secret romantic in him. However, romantic wasn't how he was coming across.

He was coming across as an insensitive, boorish lout. Hardly the man of her dreams. Still, she loved him. She loved him, and it hurt right to the ends of her bobbed red hair.

She didn't want to be the woman he settled for. She wanted to be the woman he'd waited for and loved. She wanted to be the one privileged person he let in behind the steely tough exterior he presented to the rest of the world. In her heart she knew there was something under there besides gristle and orneriness. She wanted to bring out his tender side. She would have laid her heart at his feet if only he had asked.

"You suppose we could just as well get married," she said again quietly. She glanced to her right to see if any of the other wedding guests at their table were witnessing this trampling of her most tender feelings. The other people at the table were engrossed in a spirited discussion about the best way to prepare clams. Maggie felt as if she had swallowed a clam whole. She turned back toward Rylan, who undoubtedly had a clam for a brain.

"Jeepers cripes, Mary Margaret," he said irritably, not willing to admit to himself that he was terrified she was going to say no. Why would he be terrified if he wasn't in love with her? He wouldn't be. He wasn't. "How many times are you going to repeat it? We could have settled on a date and written out half the invitations by now."

Maggie stood up, her temper seething so much that she was certain billowing clouds of steam were rising from her head. "Rylan Quaid, you are the most mannerless, arrogant, unfeeling...

Man of Her Dreams is the 2nd in the Quaid Horses series by Tami Hoag. When Maggie McSwain gets a long desired marriage proposal from Rylan Quaid, the man she's been secretly in love with for 9 years, she had hoped for something better than "I suppose we could just as well get married". In fact, she's so dismayed, she throws her champagne in his face. She wants to marry him, but when he lays out all the practical reasons, she feels the most important one is missing: he has never told her he loves her. But she's seen that he has the capacity to love and is determined that he will realise he loves her, and is prepared to use all her feminine charms to get him to do just that. This romance is funny and sexy. It has horses and dogs and feisty old ladies and gorgeous men and a few very hot sex scenes between Rylan and Maggie. Very enjoyable.

Enjoyed it. Tami Hoag knows the way between a man and woman. Rylan Quaid, the man she wants, seems hardened by life. And yet, he loves and has a way with animals. Like many men, he looks at life, including his relationship with a woman, as something that should be reasonable. So, he completely misses the point in Maggie's mind. She wants more than just something that might work out between a man and a woman. She holds out for love, and unless he can really love her, she will give up on him. I liked that Tami was able to show the ideas going on in the minds of both Maggie and Rylan Quaid. Definitely some tender as well as hot moments between them.
