Aging with Grace: What the Nun Study Teaches Us About Leading Longer, Healthier, and More Meaningful Lives, by David Snowdon

In 1986 epidemiologist Dr. David Snowdon embarked on a revolutionary scientific study that would forever change the way we view aging and old age. Dubbed the "Nun Study" because it involves a unique population of 678 Catholic sisters, this remarkable long-term research project remains today at the forefront of some of the world's most significant research on aging.

This remarkable book by one of the world's leading experts on Alzheimer's disease combines fascinating high-tech research on the brain with the heartfelt story of the aging nuns who are teaching scientists how we grow old — and how we can do so with grace. The Nun Study's findings are already helping scientists unlock the secrets to living a longer, healthier life.

Yet Aging With Grace is more than a groundbreaking health and hard-science book. It is the story of an altar boy who grew up to be a scientist studying the effects of aging on nuns. It is the poignant and inspiring stories of the nuns themselves. Ranging in age from 75 to 104, these remarkable women have allowed Dr. Snowdon access to their medical and personal records — and they have agreed to donate their brains upon death.

In Aging With Grace, we accompany Dr. Snowdon on his loving visits to nuns like Sister Clarissa, who at the age of 90 drives around the convent in a motorized cart she calls her "Chevy" and knows as much about baseball as any die-hard fan a third her age.

Then there is 104-year-old Sister Matthia, who until her death in 1998 knitted two pairs of mittens a day and prayed every evening for each of the four thousand students she taught over the years. These bright, articulate, and altruistic women have much to teach us about how faith, wisdom, and spirituality can influence the length and quality of our lives.

We also follow Dr. Snowdon into the lab as he and his colleagues race to decode one of the most devastating diseases known to humanity. We discover:

* Why high linguistic ability in early life seems to protect against Alzheimer's
* Which ordinary foods in the diet defend the brain against aging
* Why preventing strokes and depression is key to avoiding dementia
* Why it's never too late to start an exercise program
* What role heredity plays, and how lifestyle can increase our chances for a mentally vital old age
* How intangibles like community and faith help us age with grace

Both cutting-edge science and a personal prescription for hope, Aging With Grace shows how old age doesn't have to mean an inevitable slide into illness and disability; rather, it can be a time of promise and productivity, intellectual and spiritual vigor, and continuing freedom from disease.

From Publishers Weekly
Since 1986, the author, an epidemiologist, has directed a research project dubbed the Nun Study. According to Snowdon, who previously studied Seventh-Day Adventists, religious group members make ideal subjects because of their similar and somewhat insular lives. Specifically, he has been tracking the lives of 678 elderly nuns who are members of the School Sisters of Notre Dame, to assess the effects of aging. Snowdon describes in detail a pilot study he conducted with the sisters in Mankato, Wis., on the link between level of education and disabilities related to aging. This initial research convinced him to expand his base to other convents and to focus primarily on Alzheimer's disease. The participants, ranging in age from 75 to 104, agreed to provide access to their medical and personal histories and, after death, to donate their brain tissue to the project. What distinguishes this study is Snowdon's decision not to maintain the usual "objective" distance from his subjects but rather to become emotionally involved with them. His commitment to treat them with "care and respect" is readily apparent in the many warm and sympathetic anecdotes and his expression of deeply felt grief when any of the sisters becomes incapacitated by Alzheimer's or dies. Among the project's findings is a clear correlation between a low rate of Alzheimer's and high linguistic ability. Snowdon has also found a positive relationship between the consumption of certain antioxidants (e.g., lycopene, found in pink grapefruit, tomatoes and watermelon), an exercise program and an optimistic outlook and aging successfully. Although the study is still under way, readers will certainly appreciate the early insights to be gleaned from Snowdon's human- (rather than statistic-) centered and compassionate story.

From Library Journal
Since 1986, the School Sisters of Notre Dame in Mankato, MN, have opened their lives, personal histories, and medical records in an extraordinary way, thereby offering researchers a unique view of Alzheimer's and aging. Snowdon, a professor of neurology and director of the Nun Study at the Sanders-Brown Center on Aging at the University of Kentucky Medical Center, have studied this population of 678 Catholic sisters, some of whom have remained active and lucid all their lives while others have become demented. This is an ideal population to study, for it is carefully controlled: income is not a factor, all the subjects are nonsmokers, and all have similar access to diet, healthcare, and housing. Snowdon writes with empathy and affection of these sisters, who also generously agreed to donate their brains for postmortem pathological studies. From this research, Snowdon explains, it emerged that pathological changes did not always correlate with observable changes, that linguistic ability seems to protect against Alzheimer's, that prevention of stroke and heart diseases can help avoid dementia, and that heredity, diet, and exercise also play a part. Blending personal histories with scientific fact, this inspirational and fascinating look at growing older is highly recommended. "The Nun Study represents an absolutely unique American treasure and resource for all of us. The gems that Dr. Snowdon and his colleagues have unearthed will not only change the way you look at yourself and the aging people around you, they'll serve as catalysts for aging research for many years to come."
— Ronald Petersen, Ph.D., M.D., Director of the Alzheimer's Disease Research Center, Mayo Clinic

"There are lessons for all of us in this moving account of the School Sisters of Notre Dame and their commitment to help us find the causes of Alzheimer's disease. I came away with a new respect for the power of faith as well as the beauty and complexity of the human brain."
— Virginia M. Bell, M.S.W., co-author of The Best Friends Approach to Alzheimer's Care

"David Snowdon leads us through the enthralling scientific, but also very personal journey that he has been taking with the School Sisters of Notre Dame. The revelations along the way show us there is so much we can all do to alter for the better how we age, and ultimately how long we live. It is a journey not to be missed!"
— Thomas Perls M.D., M.P.H., Professor of Medicine, Harvard Medical School

"A beautiful story. Families will find hope and support through the commitment of the sisters who have dedicated their lives to helping others enjoy the gift of life as long as possible."

Inspiration, insight and hope into the aging process
By Dale C
As the daughter of an aging parent, I am interested in learning as much as I can about the aging process for the sake of my mother, myself and other family members/friends. This book is a gem. It is a moving and personal account by the scientist who led an amazing longitudinal study of a group of nuns. This study was unique in a way that no other Alzheimer's study has been.

As I read the book, I felt as though I was walking alongside the author, David Snowdon, and getting to know each and every nun. It was a privilege to share David's insight into this special community of women (many of whom live past the age of 100). When David finally decided to focus his research on Alzheimer's, he struggled with asking the nuns to sign a release form for their brains to be donated to Alzheimer research (after death). He was astonished when Sister Rita Schwalbe spoke up and said, "As sisters, we made the hard choice not to have children. Through brain donation, we can help unravel the mysteries of Alzheimer's disease and give the gift of life in a new way to future generations."

Although Alzheimers is still a mystery in many ways, this study helped illuminate several correlations. Depression and stroke puts a person at risk. High density ideas/complex sentences found in the nuns'handwritten autobiographies seemed to diminish risk. Faith and community, purposeful work and service, healthy eating, exercise all seemed to be positive factors in prevention.

Since 50% of persons over 90 years old will get Alzheimers, it is likely that many of our family/friends will be touched by this disease. Reading this book is not only a joy in getting insight into this wonderful community of nuns but also in highlighting the risk factors and research being done around the disease of Alzheimer's.

Optimistic ? Overflowing with Joy and Hope
By Phyllis Staff
Ever since my father's diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease, I've worried about the little things I forget. Never mind that I've always been a little absentminded, I fretted about whether I received the dreaded APOE-4 gene in the genetic package he bequeathed me.

This book gave me hope - lots of it!

It shows clearly that the symptoms of Alzheimer's are not merely an immutable result of your genetic heritage but also of how you've lived your life. Reading about the nun who, in spite of a brain riddled with tangles and plaques, like the Energizer Bunny, kept on going and going, gave me plenty to hope for.

Caring, kindness, love, service - all are integral to the community of nuns. Theirs is a joyful story and a fascinating read. Don't miss it.

Six Stars!

Not what I thought....
By C. Woodruff
I really thought this would be a dry scientific book about results, showing graphs, etc, but it was not at all! The nuns told him he could only study them if he promised to get to know them, and he followed their wishes completely. I'm trying to make my sentences as long as possible and if you read the book, you'll know why and think I'm hopeless! The author has a wonderful way of weaving their lives into what he has discovered, as he leaves each little pause in the chapters with a sentence to make you want to read the next to see what they discovered about it. I learned a lot about what we have a little influence over in our own physical lives and what we might not. It's a very easy read. Oops! Short sentence. My bad!

From Publishers Weekly
Having delivered two entertaining historical Wind Dancer novels, Johansen ( Storm Winds ) concludes her trilogy with a disappointing contemporary romance that collapses under the weight of its pretensions. A storm has destroyed half of the famous rosebushes on Caitlin Vasaro's estate in the South of France and endangered her plans to launch a new perfume when Alex Karazov rolls up in his Lamborghini with a proposition Caitlin can't refuse. He'll bankroll the perfume startup for a percentage of the profits and control of the campaign. Blinded by her growing affection for her savior, Caitlin is slow to realize that Alex (late of the KGB and CIA)stet ital has his own agenda: he wants her family heirloom, the Wind Dancer--a gold statue of Pegasus now in the possession of American politician Jonathan Andreas--as bait for his arch enemy, former CIA agent Brian Ledford. Besides having had Alex's best friend murdered, Ledford has been stealing artworks and staging terrorist acts to destabilize Europe and aid its newest aspiring Napoleon.

Good but not as good as the preceding two.
By A Customer
The Wind Dancer series was good. I think the first one, "The Wind Dancer" was the best story, and "Storm Winds" second best, with this one as third best. I just have to make one comment, something I found very strange in this author's writing. In the last two books of this series, the intimacy between the two main characters contained NO kissing. The author did not speak of kissing during the lust/passion/love scenes. the kissing referred to is a kiss on the forehead, a kiss on the cheek. Why was kissing not included in this author's love scenes in these two books??? It was included in the first book. Very Strange!

This tape was very good. The story was fast paced and kept the listener hooked. The heroine's french accent might have been better done but overall it was great. If you enjoy Ms. Johansen's stories, you will love this one.

The Art of Detection (Kate Martinelli), by Laurie R. King

In this thrilling new crime novel that ingeniously bridges Laurie R. King’s Edgar and Creasey Awards—winning Kate Martinelli series and her bestselling series starring Mary Russell, San Francisco homicide detective Kate Martinelli crosses paths with Sherlock Holmes–in a spellbinding dual mystery that could come only from the “intelligent, witty, and complex” mind of New York Times bestselling author Laurie R. King….

Kate Martinelli has seen her share of peculiar things as a San Francisco cop, but never anything quite like this: an ornate Victorian sitting room straight out of a Sherlock Holmes story–complete with violin, tobacco-filled Persian slipper, and gunshots in the wallpaper that spell out the initials of the late queen.

Philip Gilbert was a true Holmes fanatic, from his antiquated décor to his vintage wardrobe. And no mere fan of fiction’s great detective, but a leading expert with a collection of priceless memorabilia–a collection some would kill for.

And perhaps someone did: In his collection is a century-old manuscript purportedly written by Holmes himself–a manuscript that eerily echoes details of Gilbert’s own murder.

Now, with the help of her partner, Al Hawkin, Kate must follow the convoluted trail of a killer–one who may have trained at the feet of the greatest mind of all times.

From Publishers Weekly
Echoing King's narrative, Bresnahan's reading takes the leisurely route, bypassing the thrills and chills of the average mystery-thriller in favor of a more scenic tour. Her voice—soft, mellifluous, eminently reasonable—provides a pleasing carriage for a listener's journey. King's novel merges characters from her two best-known series: San Francisco detective Kate Martinelli and Sherlock Holmes's wife, Mary Russell. Martinelli is conducting an investigation of the mysterious death of an avid collector of Holmesian memorabilia. Bresnahan is assisted by Mackenzie, whose plummy Oxbridge tones in the Holmes story chillingly echo the twists and turns of Martinelli's investigation. The admixture of Bresnahan and Mackenzie makes for an occasionally surprising but mostly enjoyable combination, as if King's novel, two different books conjoined into one, was also supplied with two paired readings. It is Bresnahan, though, who is the more pleasurable to listen to, her unorthodox delivery outshining Mackenzie's Masterpiece Theatre diction.

At the victim's home, she discovers a typewritten manuscript that may be an undiscovered story by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, which becomes the centerpiece of a mystery that includes a Sherlock Holmes dinner group, a dead man found in an unlikely place, and a plethora of suspects. Newcomers to the series may have a difficult time keeping all the players and the complexities of their connections straight, but the uniqueness of Martinelli's family and friends is engaging. The setting of San Francisco and the Marin headlands, both present and past, adds another layer of depth to the realities of everyday life in a police inspector's work. King's prose is somewhat dry and rather pithy in places and the plot stretches a bit thin at times, but the sheer fascination of following Occam's razor will draw readers in. Teens who enjoy whodunits and Sherlock Holmes will enjoy The Art of Detection.–Charli Osborne, Oxford Public Library, MI

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Sometimes a mystery takes one's breath away with its impeccable, inexorable logic. King makes two such tales here, whose wheels interlock with a perfect, audible click. Kate Martinelli, homicide detective in San Francisco, catches a murder case in which the corpse has been found on the Marin headlands in Battery DuMaurier, an artillery site, now long out of use, constructed in the nineteenth century to guard San Francisco Bay. The victim is Philip Gilbert, a gentleman who had turned the first floor of his home into a perfect replica of Sherlock Holmes' Baker Street. Kate's involvement in the case is further tangled when a typescript turns up in Gilbert's possession telling the tale (recounted in a voice sounding very much like Holmes himself) of a 1924 transvestite and her military lover, whose corpse was also found in Battery DuMaurier. The pages of this tale are interspersed with Kate's investigation, allowing King not only to bring her Mary Russell and Martinelli series together with incredible elegance but also to allow us glimpses of Kate, her partner Leonora, their daughter Nora, and the rainbow families of the Bay Area juxtaposed against the tough daily grind of police work. There's also the opportunity to explore every facet of Holmes fandom, from the sublime and scholarly to the deliriously ridiculous. A tour de force and a great read. GraceAnne DeCandido

Multiple strands within a good tale
By Maryland Reader
If you have scanned the reviews for this book, you'll note a wide range of stars among the reviews. It seems to be a love-it or hate-it book, but I found it an engrossing and highly entertaining read.

For the uninitiated, Laurie R. King has several series of mysteries. The two best known are a Sherlock Holmes series, written from the first-person perspective of Holmes' wife (yeah, it takes an initial suspension of disbelief, but once there, you are a believer) and one featuring Kate Martinelli, a modern day San Francisco homicide detective. I love both series and read them avidly as they appear. This book entwines the two series, with Kate Martinelli taking on a murder investigation that involves local "Sherlockians".

A couple of things made this book not for everyone. The author has a descriptive narrative style and describes the physical environment in some detail. If someone is not familiar with San Francisco, the descriptions of the various neighborhoods and the directions of where the detectives where heading might get tedious. However, if you know San Francisco, even a little, they paint evocative pictures of the where and when and the people of the place.

On a similar note, if you have never been to the Marin Headlands on the "other side" of the Golden Gate Bridge, it might be be difficult to picture the juxtaposition of the raw physical beauty of the area and these old military relics/gun placements, etc.

Finally, the fact that the Kate Martinelli character is an unapologetic lesbian and that one of the subplots of the story revolved around a WWI soldier and his transvestite or transgendered partner may not have been to the taste of some readers. Pity them.

The pacing may have been slower than some of King's previous books, but I had trouble putting this down once I got into it.

One of my favorite authors - a beautifully structured confluence of her 2 longest story lines, starting with Detective Martinelli in modern-day San Francisco and leading back to the world of Russell-Holmes in the 1920's...I recommend reading all the Martinelli novels in order, then all of Russell-Holmes, in sequence, through "Locked Rooms", then read this one...

A Disappointing Read
By Virginia F. Simpson
I am a fan of this author, and had read the 4 previous books in this series. I enjoyed them. However, this one left a lot to be desired. I found the 8 year jump (leaving a HUGE gap in the story time line) disconcerting. And the page after page after page of "manuscript" was dull. I will watch for the next book and hope that it is as good as the first 4.

A story for the ages, literally and figuratively!
By Steve Bollander
For me, Ayla is the most compellingly "human" heroine I've ever known.

I'm currently re-reading the sixth and final book, "Land of the Painted Caves" for the second time.

I've read the previous 5 three times each. Great storytelling! It's sad to know that this saga has finally come to an end.

Four books, and I want more!!!!!!!

This is the ongoing fictional saga of a woman who bridged two cultures, the Cro-Magnon and the Neanderthal. Within its storyline, it provides hypothetical explainations for such earth shattering events as, flint/pyrite firestarting, clay kiln firing, soap lye, and the domestication of animals. It provides a well researched study of herbal lore and natural medicine. All of this, melding to encapsulate the reader and propel him 30,000 years into the human races past.

Most Knowledgeable Writer in all Aspects of Life
By Jeanette
Jean Auel is one in a million as writers go. She has done so much research on the time period that others would not have 'bothered' with. A very intelligent person who was able to create a wonderful story wrapped in the setting of 20 to 30 thousand years ago. She also brings in the lessons of now days, how even then people were very unkind to persons 'not like them'. Her knowledge of plants and herbs for both medicinal and foods as well as flavoring was wonderful. She is, in my opinion, the very best author I've ever read, and puts such human interactions with her 'players', as well as making them very human, having fear, love, hate as well as joy. I've read all 6 of her books for the fourth time, and although the 4th wasn't as good a story for my taste, I'd give her all the stars available. If she doesn't write another (although not a continuation of Earth's Children Series), I'll just have to read them all again !!!

Thank you, Jean Auel for your wonderful contribution. You are my favorite!

Sincerely,

Jeanette Snead

Southtown, by Rick Riordan

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series

For Tres Navarre, English professor turned private investigator, business has lately taken a drastic turn south. But if chasing down bail jumpers, adulterous spouses, and workmen’s comp cases seemed like the dregs of the PI game, it was at least a living. Not as much could be said for tracking down a man like Will “the Ghost” Stirman.

The stone-cold killer has just staged a bloody escape from the Floresville State Penitentiary with a gang of violent cons as spooked by Stirman as those on the outside who helped put him behind bars. And no one seems more worried than Navarre’s boss and mentor, Erainya Manos. It was her husband along with rival PI Sam Barrera who built the case that sent Stirman away. But Erainya’s husband is dead and she’s certain Stirman won’t let that stand in the way of his taking revenge against her and her adopted son.

All of Navarre’s instincts are screaming that there’s more to this case than meets the eye. But Erainya won’t tell him—and Sam Barrera seems to be escaping into a strange twilight from a truth too terrible to remember. That leaves Tres to dig into a twisted mystery of greed, vigilantism, and murder, where lives are bought and sold and the line between guilt and innocence is razor-thin. Meanwhile, Stirman and his gang are coming, leaving behind them a trail of brutal, unforgiving violence that will end in an area of San Antonio known as Southtown—but that may soon just as well be called hell on earth.

Amazon.com Review
Texas PI Tres Navarre, Riordan's series hero, is back in this gritty thriller about an escaped killer seeking revenge on everyone who put him away--including a detective's widow who just happens to be Navarre's partner. Will Stirman, the mastermind behind a human trafficking operation, was brought down by Fred Barrow and Sam Barrera, who killed his wife and stole his seven million dollars. Barrera is slipping into senility, and Barrow's death was a bad dream Erainya Barrow would just as soon forget. But now Stirman holds her life--and her young son's--in his hands, and he won't let go until he gets his revenge as well as his money. There's plenty of violence but not a lot of suspense in this solidly crafted but ultimately forgettable mystery. --Jane Adams

From Publishers Weekly
Riordan's superb fifth Tres Navarre novel (Big Red Tequila, etc.), about the former Berkeley professor now working as a PI in his native San Antonio, Tex., features a fairly standard-issue villain, Will Stirman, but it also has the courage and imagination to make Stirman if not sympathetic at least understandable in his rage against the people who stole his life. The author also makes us believe in the tortured, untrustworthy brain processes of Sam Barrera, a former FBI agent now trying desperately to keep working as a PI in spite of rapidly advancing Alzheimer's. Barrera and former cop Fred Barrow ended Stirman's career as a flesh peddler selling illegal Mexican immigrants into slavery, and the first thing on Stirman's mind after a bloody prison escape is revenge against these two. But Barrow is long dead, shot by his abused wife, Erainya Manos, the tough and touching woman for whom Navarre works. When Stirman turns his rage against Manos and her eight-year-old son, whose soccer team Navarre coaches, the Texas PI gets more involved in the search for the escaped convict than his local police friends would like. Coping with Barrera's heartbreaking mental lapses and trying to balance his anger at Stirman with a growing feeling that a lot of the man's anger might be justified, Navarre walks a thin, highly believable and surprisingly suspenseful line that should delight old Riordan fans and win new ones.

From Booklist
Tres Navarre has a cute name, a doctorate in English literature, and an unexplained taste for sitting around in cars watching deadbeats enter and exit buildings. Navarre works for a woman who specializes in finding bail jumpers, deadbeat dads, and insurance cheaters. The action in this critically acclaimed series set in Texas walks a thin line between realistic comedy and cartoon silliness; usually that tension energizes the drama, but this time the comic-book side dominates. A typical scene: Tres is dining with his girlfriend at a table overlooking a waterfall. She spots a waiter bearing a knife and sneaking up on Tres; without missing a beat, Tres upends the waiter into surging water below. This time out, five convicts have escaped from Floresville State Penitentiary. Their leader is intent on killing Tres' boss, the widow of his two-timing partner. Riordan delivers plenty of action and violence here, but he slips badly in handling his characters. He's a past winner of the Edgar, the Anthony, and the Shamus awards, however, so his latest will attract an audience. Connie Fletcher

This is a really great Tres Navarre story! Tight plot, great characters, excellent balance of humor and mystery. I've like this series a lot but this may be the best of them.

I missed Tres ... and kinda still do.
By Andrew S. Rogers
I'm a big fan of Rick Riordan and his San Antonio PI Tres Navarre. I've enjoyed Riordan's previous novels, including the non-Tres Cold Springs, and am ready to declare he's the one novelist whose next work I'm always anxiously awaiting. After reading Southtown, I think I have to say my single favorite sentence in the entire work is the one at the end of the About the Author section: Rick Riordan "lives in San Antonio ... where he is at work on the next novel in the Tres Navarre series."

I'm looking forward to that one because, unfortunately, Southtown didn't quite slake my thirst for another great Tres adventure. In The Devil Went Down to Austin, the last Tres novel, Riordan introduced the technique of departing from Tres' first-person narrative from time to time to give the reader information Tres himself never saw. Now, in Southtown, about half the story is told in omniscient third-person. Only Tres' own scenes are told in his own voice.

This technique allows Riordan to do the kind of psychological exploration he did in Cold Springs. But it makes for a lot less Tres than many of his fans might like -- especially since this book already struck me as fairly brief relative to the other books in the series (it can't just have been my eagerness to read the story that let me finish the book in just a few hours over two evenings), and perhaps a little hurried. At one point, I found myself wondering whether Riordan is getting bored with Tres Navarre. After all, Conan Doyle came to hate Sherlock Holmes and was eager to push him over Reichenbach Falls so he could move on to writing other things. Riordan seems to be exploring different ways to convey psychological tension and suspense, which is great. But as a fan, I'm hoping Tres isn't getting in his way.

That's not to say this is a bad book. Certainly Tres fans won't want to pass it up. I've mentioned in a review of another Tres Navarre title that it's nice to see him maturing as a person (in his world) and a character (in ours), and both those processes continue in Southtown. Many of the supporting characters from earlier books are back, but Tres' relationships with them have evolved in subtle -- or sometimes less subtle -- ways. And the resolution of this story suggests even bigger changes to come in the future.

Southtown is a fine story and a good entry in a high-quality series. But it fell just a little bit short in paying off the eagerness with which I awaited it. So while I again find myself looking forward to the next Tres Navarre novel, I'm hoping the author isn't feeling compelled to turn them out too quickly. There haven't been any bad (or even so-so) Riordan books yet, but in my opinion the best Navarre books have been *really* good, and that's what I'm hoping to see again.

Rollicking fun in San Antonio
By Ron Franscell, Author of 'Morgue: A Life in Death'
When last we saw Tres Navarre, he was busting up the heroin trade in San Antonio's West Side and considering a more challenging job as a medieval studies professor. Luckily for fans of contemporary crime thrillers, Navarre chose dark alleys over the Dark Ages, and he's back after a three-year sabbatical.

Rick Riordan's new "South Town" heralds Navarre's return after publishing his stand-alone thriller "Cold Springs" last year. And the action picks up at the same pace it left off.

The promise of confronting a killer that even killers fear is how Riordan coaxed his popular protagonist out of literary retirement. "Cold Springs," was his fourth book, but his first without Navarre. Having won crime-fiction's Triple Crown (the Edgar, Shamus and Anthony awards) on the strength of the Tres Navarre series, it was a wise move for Riordan, who in real life is a mild-mannered teacher at an upscale private junior high school in San Antonio.

Not that "Cold Springs" was a clunker -- it wasn't. But Navarre is truly one of hard-boiled crime fiction's most complex and sarcastic sleuths since Phillip Marlowe. But while Marlowe wasn't especially cuddly, Navarre holds both black belt in karate and a Ph.D. in English from Berkeley.

And "South Town" -- a localism for the down-side neighborhoods of San Antonio -- runs faster than a Texas road-runner on August asphalt as it hurtles through the diverse worlds of human trafficking, homicide cops and one-hundred-year floods. Riordan populates it with a delightfully motley cast, from widow-raping perverts to a shady pawnshop owner turned stay-at-home dad -- and a third-grade soccer team. As usual, Riordan careens through his Gordian plot only to add a final, thought-provoking twist that no sane reader sees coming.

Riordan's Navarre is tough to beat, mentally or physically: His wise-cracking is as abundant as his skull-cracking. A Tres Navarre thriller inspires as many laughs as gasps.

Any reader who waits impatiently for every new Dave Robichaux or Stephanie Plum mystery can add Riordan to his to-be-read list. He's one of the real artists in the world of neo-noir, where a private-eye can politely question an outlaw by splashing his face with fajitas -- then go out the next morning and coach a youth-league under-10 soccer team.

Fool's Errand (Tawny Man #1), by Robin Hobb

For fifteen years FitzChivalry Farseer has lived in self-imposed exile, assumed to be dead by almost all who once cared about him. But now, into his isolated life, visitors begin to arrive: Fitz’s mentor from his assassin days; a hedge-witch who foresees the return of a long-lost love; and the Fool, the former White Prophet, who beckons Fitz to fulfill his destiny.

Then comes the summons he cannot ignore. Prince Dutiful, the young heir to the Farseer throne, has vanished. Fitz, possessed of magical skills both royal and profane, is the only one who can retrieve him in time for his betrothal ceremony, thus sparing the Six Duchies profound political embarrassment . . . or worse. But even Fitz does not suspect the web of treachery that awaits him—or how his loyalties will be tested to the breaking point.

Amazon.com Review
This first volume of a new trilogy from one of fantasy's most popular and skilled authors will delight longtime Hobb fans as well as first-time readers of her work.

FitzChivalry, the hero of The Farseer trilogy, now lives an isolated and quiet life with his foster son Hap and his Wit partner wolf, Nighteyes, until he is sought out by his old mentor Chade and the enigmatic, charming Fool. Once again, duty calls: Fitz must find a missing prince and prevent political chaos in the Six Duchies. The mission will test his conflicting loyalty to country and family, his uneasy compromise with his own magic, and all the relationships he values most.

If you're a fantasy fan who hasn't yet explored the Farseer world, this is a fine place to start: Hobb deftly provides new readers with all the needed information. The finely detailed world building and intensive character development rarely slow down the action of the story. Fool's Errand is a complex, beautifully written and sometimes heart-rending examination of the consequences of duty and love. --Roz Genessee

From Publishers Weekly
In this hard-to-put-down follow-up to the Farseer Trilogy, Hobb maintains the high standards of her earlier fantasy series. The Fool and FitzChivalry Farseer band together once more to ride against the foes of the Farseer royal family in the kingdom of the Six Duchies. Last seen in Assassin's Quest, FitzChivalry (aka Tom Badgerlock due to the shock of white in his dark hair) has matured beyond the youth blindly following orders. For the past 15 years, Fitz has quietly led the life of a semi-recluse, trying his hardest to disappear. Believing that his glory days are over, he's surprised when fate (in the form of the Fool) pulls him back into the political intrigues that plague the Six Duchies. Endowed with both royal Skill magic and beast magic, Fitz assumes the task of returning the wayward heir to the throne, Prince Dutiful, to his home before his betrothal ceremony something that should be an easy task. In the event, the easy task proves extremely difficult, both physically and mentally for Fitz. The first half of the novel mostly focuses on Fitz's angst-ridden past. The heart-thumping, sword-clashing action that Hobb is known for emerges only during the second half, bringing Fitz fully to life. This is not to say that the first half is by any means dull. It's not. But the full range of Fitz's capabilities doesn't come to the forefront until later. When the action sequences finally kick in, they're non-stop. What starts as a very good read shifts into a stay-up-until-2:00 a.m.-to-finish type of book. (Jan. 9)Forecast: Stephen Youll's quiet jacket art gives no hint of the novel's intensity, but Hobb fans will know better and not be deterred.

From Booklist
Hobb continues the adventures of FitzChivalry the Wit, the protagonist of her Farseer trilogy, in the first volume of a new triptych, The Tawny Man. Now in his mid-thirties, Fitz enjoys life in a forest cottage with his bond-wolf and a boy he has raised as virtually his son, and he is most reluctant to go questing again. But his old companion the Fool, now the Tawny Man, makes a compelling case that Fitz's help is needed. Prince Dutiful, a local royal, has got into a parlous situation through a romantic entanglement that suggests he was very inaccurately named. The consequences of this misalliance bode far worse things than negative media coverage, so Fitz, who hasn't lost his sense of responsibility or, fortunately, any of his old skills, launches another quest. In the remainder of the book's many pages, he encounters a dazzling array of characters, many of them human, and all of them drawn in exquisite detail, particularly the women. Is Hobb fashioning as world-class a fantasy saga as The Liveship Traders? Seems so. Roland Green

Beyond fantasy
By Ilana Teitelbaum
Robin Hobb is a developing writer in the best sense of the word. In the original Farseer trilogy she gave us a story that was beautifully crafted and pushed the envelope on realism within fantasy. Liveship Traders was perhaps an experiment in the use of multiple viewpoints, with a dull and ponderous outcome to my mind. But in writing it, Hobb's skill has improved in bounds, to culminate finally in the utter perfection that is "Fool's Errand."
I say perfection even though the beginning might be slow for some readers. But once the story gets going, it takes off, plunging the reader into an ever-deepening plot and a world of characters who are among the most complex in the genre.

In particular, Fitz has only gotten better as a character ever since the original trilogy. Age has matured him and given him new dimensions; and yet at the same time, the scars from childhood still remain, surfacing in ways that are beyond his power and even beyond his awareness. It is possible to perceive how Burrich's upbringing and initial abuse have molded Fitz and how his upbringing, together with his subsequent experiences, shape his responses now. Yet through it all he is the same FitzChivalry we know, speaking with the voice of age and experience, but still familiar.
This uncanny gift for psychological depth is unparalleled in the genre, and comparatively rare outside the genre as well. Hobb's characters have a quality of mystery to them. There is more to them beyond the scope of the novel; somewhere they are having thoughts we cannot guess, saying things we shall never know about. Just as people in real life always have hidden depths that are beyond anyone's power to see, Fitz, the Fool, Chade, Nighteyes, Starling and the rest of the cast are not completely revealed to us. Some part of the soul remains backstage, hidden from view, because a depth is there that is so real, it must be infinite.
How the author conveys this I do not know, but it infuses the novel with movement and intoxicating power. Add this to a riveting and unpredictable plot, moral complexity and as skilled prose as you'll find anywhere, and one clearly has a masterpiece in the making.

Stellar
By Dr. Wigglesworth
Each Farseer book I read leaves me thinking it might be my favorite one. This is no exception. Hobb delves back into the Fitz first-person perspective, after Liveship Traders, and her writing is masterful as always. The book benefits from the simplicity of having far less work to do establishing the world, which was done previously.

Somehow I was captivated by 200 pages with very little moving of the plot. This is the usual slow build-up of books in this series. It was great catching up with Fitz. Certain events from the Liveship Traders are referred to, uniting the world and storylines. This will be lost on readers who have not read chronologically, and may seem unnecessary and confusing to them. I did not find it so at all. I certainly recommend reading in the order the books were written in order to appreciate them fully.

The storyline is tight, compelling, and beautifully rendered. Unlike some of the other Farseer books, this one seems to have a more clear beginning, middle and end. Thus, it was one of the more satisfying books in the series. My girlfriend caught the tears welling up in my eyes at one point. Such amazing writing.

I have no idea what happens next, and am looking forward to finding out.

Good to see an old friend again
By J. Allis
As mentioned repeatedly, Fool's Errand begins the 'Tawny Man,' a sequel trilogy to Robin Hobb's 'Farseer' series. I've just begun the new series, so I'm only going to talk about the first volume.

You don't need to read the first trilogy before you start the second, but it does add enormously to the emotional resonance. You also don't need to read the Live Ship Traders trilogy, set in the same world with different characters. I gather that there's some connection, but I haven't read it and so far I don't feel like I'm missing much.

The story is in first-person, with the main character (FitzChivalry Farseer) telling his own story. Robin Hobb's writing is evocative and picturesque. She seamlessly blends Fitz's perceptions of the world around him with his responses to it. Fitz is a complex character, with memories, emotions, and sensations constantly weaving through his thoughts. It's hard not to be pulled in by his tangled psyche as you sympathize and want to shake him by turns. Fitz is a really good, personable guy...but he's definitely got his issues. If you've read the first series, you know they're warranted. I find his most admirable quality is that he forges on and does what he needs to, no matter what his internal landscape looks like.

In fact, all the characters are very believable. Each of them possesses a unique, realistic personality with their own merits and flaws. They're people you could meet in your own life, put in desperate situations that bring out the best and worst in them. Even the animals are shaped with their little ways and idiosyncracies. The Fool, especially, is a vibrant, living character. Out of everyone in the book, he's the one that Fitz is closest to, and their interactions sparkle like jewels scattered through the text. I found myself practically skimming some through sections of the book, just to get to the next part where the two of them talk.

Which leads me to the next point. I gave the book four stars because while Robin Hobb is an excellent writer, she's not a great one. She can get repetetive about plot points. Sometimes you feel a bit like she's bashing you over the head with them lest you somehow miss one. And I think she occasionally tries *too* hard with Fitz--there are times when she pushes his emotional reactions so hard that I feel embarrassed for him, like he's making a public spectacle of himself.

But on the whole, this is a wonderful book. I stayed up till 4 am two nights running, and spent Sunday trying to do housework one-handed while I read.

I leave one final caution: the Farseer trilogy was spectacular up till the final book, and then everything sort of crammed together and got melodramatic. It wasn't bad, but it just wasn't as strong as the rest of the series (I would give Assassion's Fate 3 stars, while the rest of the trilogy was 4 bordering on 5). I'm not certain whether she's overcome that problem with this new effort. So if you're a reader who puts a lot of weight on endings, you may want to keep that in mind.

This would be a terrific book even without the mystery!
By M. C. Crammer
The book has so much literary merit, that it could be placed among the novels. However, the excellent mystery plot also wins it a place among the mysteries.
Haines creates characters who are memorable and vivid and places them in the Mississippi Delta town of Zinnia (I'm kind of reminded of the movie "In the Heat of the Night"). Sarah Booth is living in the ancestral home -- she is an orphan and an only child, the last of the Delaneys -- but is about to lose it, because she is destitute despite her social credentials. Her only company at Dahlia House - the antebellum house -- is the ghost of a slave, who appears in a variety of outfits and "encourages" Sarah to get to work reproducing.
In an attempt to earn some money, Sarah takes on the task of trying to get to the truth of a scandal from 20 years ago in which first a leading citizen and then the leading citizen's wife die in some very questionable accidents. THe two young offspring are whispered to have something to do with it, and Sarah's client wants to find out if Hamilton the Fifth is as bad as rumors have it. Hamilton the Fifth is a romantic interest worthy of Evanovich -- and did I mention the book is often funny?
Sarah is stirring up some dangerous memories and some deaths start to follow.
I really loved this book and can hardly wait to read the next in this series and discover what happens to Sarah.
