Chronicles the further adventures of the characters from the Star Wars movies; a five-week PW bestseller.
Copyright 1994 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal
Hard on the heels of the emperor's death, the Alliance receives word of an outpost planet beseiged by a new alien invader, a lizardlike race of creatures bent on conquest of the galaxy. Flushed with their recent victory and stunned by the revelation of their parentage, Luke and Leia travel to the edge of the Empire to join forces with their erstwhile enemies to combat an even deadlier foe. Set prior to the events of Timothy Zahn's "Star Wars" cycle, Tyers's first foray into the Star Wars universe captures the feel of space opera while attempting a three-dimensional portrayal of the forces of a decaying empire. A worthwhile addition to a popular sf subgenre.

This involved tale follows the Rebel victory over the Empire in George Lucas' 1983 Return of the Jedi. Bakura is an almost terrestrial planet at a far reach of the galaxy; as the novel begins, it's being invaded by the unpronounceable Ssi-ruuk, a race of--well, of lizards. The Ssi-ruuk enjoy "enteching" people. That's a process where the enslaved human's energies are electronically transferred into androids. It's an awful thing to happen to anybody, so Luke Skywalker--after Ben Kenobi counsels him from the shadow-world--heads up his battle-weary force for a showdown. Meanwhile, on the surface of Bakura, there's a political wrangle going on, and in all of that Luke sort of falls for the aura of Senator Gaeriel Captison, but not, quite, for the senator herself. When's that boy going to settle down? Han Solo, Princess Leia, and various lovable robots are here, too, in small doses; mostly, this is Luke's book. The Force is with him, of course. Sort of a mix of Edgar Rice Burroughs (without Burroughs' humor), Robert Heinlein (as in Starship Troopers, say, but Tyers, a point in her favor, isn't as gung ho), and a lot of New Age notions, hiding inside the Force. Tyers' novel doesn't rival anything in the Star Trek series, but prequels and sequels to Lucas' films are in the works, so fans will make off with this like bandits. John Mort

Shaky Truce

I liked this story. I liked the way the author described Luke's internal struggles. I also enjoyed the verbal battles between the empire's governor and Leia. I recommend all Star Wars fans to read this book.

Good...but a little too neatly wrapped up for my taste.
By Ken Claassen
First of all, let me start by saying that, although I have seen every Star Wars movie (in the theaters, no less) and consider myself a moderate fan, I am new to the Star Wars novels. I began reading because I've always been curious about "movies 7-9" (a.k.a. the movies Lucas isn't going to make -- please reconsider, George.) and "Truce at Bakura" seemed like a good place to start, being that it takes place a scant few hours after "Return of the Jedi" closes.
That being said, "Bakura" ended a bit too neatly for my taste. The summary of the plot is basically that the victorious Rebels intercept an antiquated probe from the edge of the galaxy. The probe contains an urgent plea for help from the Emperor against a relentless enemy hopelessly outnumbering the fighting forces of the planet Bakura. Leia makes a quick decision to help the beleagured populace, hoping to win the world for the New Republic. Upon arrival, while Leia conducts truce negotiations with the stranded Imperial Forces there, Luke is discovered by a young Force-sensitive boy enslaved to the attacking enemy, who immediately crave possession of Luke's Jedi abilities for their own evil ends...
Those are the good points, the bad point is that nothing further is left open for some very interesting and well-drawn new characters to do in further books. The ending is too neatly accomplished. Because of this, I only give an otherwise superbly written novel a moderate 3 stars. The upshot: Unless you, like me, absolutely must know what happens to Our Intrepid Band of Rebels right after RotJ, skip this one and go on to other books.

Given Up for Dead: America's Heroic Stand at Wake Island, by Bill Sloan

A gripping narrative of unprecedented valor and personal courage, here is the story of the first American battle of World War II: the battle for Wake Island. Based on firsthand accounts from long-lost survivors who have emerged to tell about it, this stirring tale of the “Alamo of the Pacific” will reverberate for generations to come.

On December 8, 1941, just five hours after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Japanese planes attacked a remote U.S. outpost in the westernmost reaches of the Pacific. It was the beginning of an incredible sixteen-day fight for Wake Island, a tiny but strategically valuable dot in the ocean. Unprepared for the stunning assault, the small battalion was dangerously outnumbered and outgunned. But they compensated with a surplus of bravery and perseverance, waging an extraordinary battle against all odds.

When it was over, a few hundred American Marines, sailors, and soldiers, along with a small army of heroic civilian laborers, had repulsed enemy forces several thousand strong––but it was still not enough. Among the Marines was twenty-year-old PFC Wiley Sloman. By Christmas Day, he lay semiconscious in the sand, struck by enemy fire. Another day would pass before he was found—stripped of his rifle and his uniform. Shocked to realize he hadn’t awakened to victory, Sloman wondered: Had he been given up for dead—and had the Marines simply given up?

In this riveting account, veteran journalist Bill Sloan re-creates this history-making battle, the crushing surrender, and the stories of the uncommonly gutsy men who fought it. From the civilians who served as gunmen, medics, and even preachers, to the daily grind of life on an isolated island—literally at the ends of the earth—to the agony of POW camps, here we meet our heroes and confront the enemy face-to-face, bayonet to bayonet.

From Publishers Weekly
"Uncommon courage was a common virtue": this was said of Marines on another island, Iwo Jima. Texas journalist Sloan's excellent research, interviewing and journalistic prose will have readers of this moving book saying it of Wake Island, too: this popular military history is the best account yet of the Battle for Wake Island in December 1941. An almost barren coral atoll in the Central Pacific, Wake was a link in American communications with the Far East and squarely in the middle of Japanese-held islands. So both sides targeted it in the coming war, and soon after Pearl Harbor the Japanese began steady air attacks on the atoll's garrison. That garrison included a minuscule Marine air arm, flying half-wrecked F4F Wildcats, a thin battalion of Marine infantry and artillery, and a large number of civilian construction workers overtaken by the war while building a base. Battered from the air, this motley group actually drove off the first Japanese attempt at a landing, and inflicted heavy casualties on a second and much stronger effort before surrendering. The Wake Islanders can truly be called "heroic," even if Marine Major Devereaux and Navy Commander Cunningham did not coordinate as well as they could have. The Japanese emerge with little credit for either their witless tactics or their harsh treatment of the prisoners, although a Dr. Ozeki saved the lives of several wounded Americans. Wake Island has nearly faded from memory; the survivors interviewed are fading from life; this book is direly needed on any WW II shelf.

From Booklist
This is the third recently published account about the capture of Wake Island in December 1941 (after Pacific Alamo by John Wukovits [2003] and Hell Wouldn't Stop by Chet Cunningham [2002]), and like its predecessors, the book avails itself of the handful of witnesses to the combat there. Sloan distinguishes himself with a seasoned journalistic approach, emphasizing the personal experience of young marines and civilian construction workers who defeated an initial Japanese attempt to land but succumbed to a second one. The possibility that Wake could have held out has generated conflicting memoirs and naval accounts, which Sloan draws on in his narrative as he recounts the fighting from the perspective of the foxhole. Collectively lauded as heroes at a grim time, when the war was going Japan's way, the marines are ably individualized by Sloan in ground-pounding dramatization of the gory action at every gun position. The last-stand courage of Wake's warriors continues to draw readers of military history. Gilbert Taylor

Review
“A thoroughly researched, cleanly written blend of history, narrative, and professional insight that cannot help but move you.”—James Webb, author of Fields of Fire and The Emperor’s General

“Given Up for Dead is the riveting account of a small garrison of Marines, sailors, and civilian workers who handed the Japanese their first defear of World War II in the Pacific. It is poignant, solidly researched, and told with brilliance and sensitivity. My hope is that this book will serve as a lasting tribute to a remarkable and heroic group of men.”—General P. X. Kelley, USMC (Ret.), 28th Commandant of the Marine Corps

"Drawing on the memories of a rapidly dwindling number of American (and a couple of Japanese) veterans ... [Given Up For Dead is] a blood and guts tale from the early days of WWII."—Kirkus Reviews

“Highly readable...exhaustively reported and researched, moves at a pace that screams.”—Marine Corps Times

"Given Up for Dead is a welcome find…. It is the 15 days of siege forming the core of the book that most readers are quite likely to remember most vividly…. By producing a nuanced account instead of a jingoistic, gung-ho glorification of a distant battle in a long-ago war, Sloan has added a valuable book to World War II literature."—Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

"Given Up for Dead is especially effective in telling the story of the individuals caught up in the battle…. A dramatic recounting of those desperate days of December 1941 when a small island and the courage of its few defenders momentarily held the attention of a proud and grateful country. "—Dallas Morning News

Wake Islands Heroic Stand
By WHAM
First, I was only nine years old when the attack on Pear Harbor and subsequent battle for Wake Island took place. I remember our father coming to the bed room and telling my older brother and myself that we were at war with Japan. At that time I hadn't even heard the name Pearl Harbor. Thought it was in San Francisco Bay. When naming the battleships which are named for states it kinda of added to the confusion. My folks, like everyone else in North America at the time were glued to the radio and the battle for Wake Island was very much in the news. Several months later a movie came out on the battle of Wake Island which I saw and left everyone with the impression their were no survivors. As an adult I read many articles on the Battle of Wake.Bill Sloan's book is probably the most detailed and informative which also cleared up a lot of misinformation documented by other writers.

Why don't we know more about this heroic struggle?
By A Customer
Bill Sloan accomplishes for me everything he set out to do--which is to give the reader a close-up, on-the-ground view of what it must have been like to endure the siege and the aftermath of this little-known struggle that represented the first face-to-face combat between the Japanese soldier and the American Marine. The endurance of these men is an everlasting tribute to both the Marine Corps and to the American spirit. And similar to what one finds when reading "Ghost Soldiers" or "Flag of our Fathers", one sees here the corruption of the bushido code by the Japanese military and the horrific consequences of this corruption--to both the Japanese foot soldier and later to US POW's. Credit to author Sloan for presenting a moving and enduring tribute to the brave men on both sides. And some welcome contrast to the conventional wisdom by restoring the reputation of that benighted scapegoat, Admiral Kimmel. How about a few more belated medals to these men who were every bit as courageous and effective in the performance of their duty as Alvin York and Audie Murphy.

Informative
By J. Teipen
Mr Sloan gives a good account of a sadly unknown battle to many generations. The defenders of Wake set the tone for the rest of the Pacific campaign. The Imperial Empire found out that maybe they did not have the divine right to expansion and that the Americans were not the spoiled, lazy children of priveledge that they expected. While a great triumph for the men who fought there, Wake is, in my opinion a blemish on the US forces for essentially hanging them out to dry. Despite Kimmel's errors at Pearl Harbor, I do have to give him credit for at least trying to help out these abandoned men before his successor, in his infinite lack of "determinism", managed to FUBAR the whole mission and leave these US Soldiers and civilians out to dry. Disgraceful!

From Publishers Weekly
Bob Lee Swagger, jungle-smart hillbilly and premier shootist, explodes as a thinking man's Rambo when Hunter's ( The Day Before Midnight ) canny plot overcomes the barrage of high-tech ballistics data in this otherwise satisfying thriller. Swagger's sniper kills were legendary in Vietnam until an enemy bullet sent him into seclusion at his home in the Arkansas mountains. Retired Col. Schreck lures him back into "the World" on the pretense that he will be testing new bullets, but instead presses him into his special "Agency" unit. Swagger's job is to predict which site on the president's upcoming speaking tour a professional sniper would choose for an assassination attempt--so Schreck's unit can prevent it. Swagger calls the hit just right but is shot and framed in the assassination by Schreck's men. Only FBI agent and sniper ace Nick Memphis believes that Swagger is innocent. Memphis and Swagger trace the real assassin through the shootist network, making clever use of gun-lore magazines. They take on FBI bureaucrats, Schreck's nasties, Salvadoran death squads and local law agencies to get to the final showdown. While the novel's firearms details may be daunting to non-NRA members, the characters, plot and courtroom finale will leave readers wrung out.

From Library Journal
Two men, one determined to maintain his reclusive life in the Arkansas mountains, the other fiercely dedicated to remaining part of the FBI, are drawn together in an effort to clear their names and stay alive during an intricate cover-up of an unauthorized mercenary maneuver in a Latin American country. Bob Lee Swagger, or Bob the Nailer as he was known in Vietnam, is a sniper par excellence. Because of a war injury, he devotes his time to maintaining his marksmanship and avoiding the outside world. These skills and his loner status make him an ideal target for a pseudogovernmental group planning an assassination as part of the cover-up. Nick Memphis, pursuing an investigation from which he has been warned by his FBI superiors, stumbles onto facts about Swagger that force him to go undercover with him. Tautly written by the author of The Day Before Midnight (Bantam, 1989), the plot makes a number of turns before swooping to a conclusion where patriotism and personal integrity triumph. Recommended for popular fiction collections.

The Best In a While
By Russell Diederich
"Point of Impact" is the best book that I've read in quite a while. I purchased Stephen Hunter's book on a whim, and hope that it would be entertaining. It was more than just entertaining, it was good. The book is about an ex-Marine sniper, named Bob Lee Swagger, who spent three tours in Viet Nam. For the last twenty years, he's been holed up in the Ouachitians mountains living with his dog Mike and his rifles. The soft-spoken marksman is approached to help out a government branch in tracking down an assassin. Nick Memphis, a down on his luck FBI agent, is investigating a gruesome murder of an informant that was trying to reach him. As the informant dies, he writes the words, ROM DO on the floor with his own blood. The two stories quickly become entwined in a turbulent plot full of double cross, ballistic charts, and 1,400 yard shots.
Hunter does a great job of telling just enough of the story to let you think you know where he is going. Then he turns the story on you leaving you surprised. He does this throughout the book. Only once was I able to guess where he was going. All the times that I thought I had him, Hunter was laughing at me from in front of his typewriter. He does it from the very beginning as we open up on Swagger in a deer blind waiting for Ole Tim, the largest buck in the forest. Swagger's character grows on you, even though he appears tough and rough around the edges.
Hunter is a master of the false-direction. He sets everything up so perfectly that once he changes the tables on you, you can see how he set you up. It all makes sense. It's the literary version of magic. Some authors are good at it, for others you can see the wires. Hunter is very good at it. If you like action/adventure, good writing, and an author that's good a deception, check this one out. I'll definitely read more of Hunter.

Incredible!
By Robert A. Hans
Wow, this book is amazing! Well written and technically pretty good. Bob "the Nailer" is not one of those annoyingly perfect good guys that don't really exist. He has his share of problems, which are explained in the book but not dwelled on for long.
There are some pretty good reviews here that sum up the story pretty well, so I'm going to skip that. I will say that I normally read only sci-fi/fantasy and had long ago grown weary of these type of books. But the way Hunter combines the convoluted plot twists that Ludlum loves so much with the attention to detail that Clancy is so known for and then adds his own ability to tell a story in an interesting way really hooked me.
You just may find yourself shopping for a Winchester mdl 70 or a Remington 700 (in .308, of course) before the end of this one!

The lone gunman--except now, you're rooting for him!
By DanD
Bob Lee Swagger is not a man to mess around with. He was a military sniper, with the second highest number of kills in Vietnam. Then he came home to a country that shunned sniping, and he went into seclusion in the Arkansas mountains.
Now he's been called out. A shady government conspiracy wants to use him in an assassination--as the fallguy. And when Swagger does indeed fall for it, lured into a trap, he promises his tormentors will pay...with their blood...
Helping him is FBI agent Nick Memphis, who's just recieved his third strike. An odd pair, but together, they must unravel a far-reaching conspiracy...and bring vengence upon those who deserve it.
"Point of Impact" was the first Stephen Hunter novel I read. It got me hooked on his writing, though few other novels lived up to it ("Dirty White Boys" was pretty good, if I recall correctly). This novel is a thriller of the highest caliber (no pun intended). It's about a proud Southern gunman pushed to the limits...the one spot where you DON'T want him to be! This is a terrific, suspenseful book, and if you are a fan of thrillers and haven't read it yet, then you absolutely must.

From Publishers Weekly
Rice's Crazy in Love and other novels were about women with privileged lives who had problems resolving family relationships or facilitating marital communication, who needed more independence or artistic fulfillment. Here she sacrifices subtlety and wit for a more conventional romantic tale whose protagonist is a young mother cast in emotional limbo after the death of her four-year-old daughter and the loss of her husband to another woman. The narrative opens with a blaze in the childhood home of heroine Anne Davis. Anne, who has returned to this New England sanctuary to try to deal with her grief, escapes from the flames?but then runs back in to retrieve her child's possessions. She's rescued by firefighter Thomas Devlin, a man horribly scarred in a fire that claimed his wife's life more than a decade earlier. As might be expected, Anne rekindles a long-dormant spark in Thomas's heart ("Something about the woman... made him know he'd found a kindred soul. Just looking into her eyes was like living a lifetime"); in turn, she disregards his scarred features, as if to prove she's not superficial. Yet their romance seems ill-starred. Anne is snubbed by her hometown's down-at-the-heel residents, including her own sister, for being being both beautiful and wealthy?especially when her husband desperately wants her back. Indeed, it is hard to warm up to Anne, who's as precious as the tiny collages that she constructs from postage stamps. She gains sympathy because of her lost daughter, but she doesn't redeem herself to the reader until the conclusion, when she performs an act of selflessness. This formulaic romantic novel about a second chance at love lacks the spirited voice Rice's fans have grown to expect.

From Booklist
After witnessing the death of her four-year-old daughter, Karen, in a tragic accident, Anne Davis returns to the New England island where she grew up. When a fire threatens to consume the family home, Anne reenters the house in search of her dead daughter's most treasured possessions. Overcome by smoke, she is rescued by Thomas Devlin, a grotesquely scarred firefighter who recognizes in Anne a fellow survivor. The two kindred souls start a tenuous relationship, but Thomas' jealous son and Anne's cold ex-husband attempt to derail their romance. This 1990s version of the Beauty and the Beast story has many fine touches--the way Karen's winsome crayon drawing becomes her mother's talisman; Anne's sister's barely suppressed envy of Anne's glamorous life; troubled teen Maggie's start-and-stop efforts to straighten out her life. But Rice blows a good deal of credibility by loading down her plot with one tragic event after another. This fairy tale would have you believe that you can find love in a dangerous world, but you'd better have plenty of fire and auto insurance Joanne Wilkinson

Heartwarming story of love and hope
By Judith E. Pavluvcik
Home Fires is the first Luanne Rice book I have read and I know that after finishing this wonderful book, I will now be seeking to devour all of her other books!!
Ms. Rice writes from the heart concerning what matters most in a family - love, tenderness and caring. She writes of tragedy and loss that will have you weeping but by the end of this book, you are smiling with joy at the realization of love and hope in this family in the midst of all of the tragedy.
I absolutely loved the tenderness, understanding, and compassion in the character of Thomas Devlin - (yes, Thomas, where are you? :-)). I admired the strength and courage in Anne Davis after the recent loss of her four-year-old daughter. She draws the reader completely into the depth of each character, from young to old, and you feel like you know them intimately and can relate to them all. You experience their pain, grief, and uncertainty and mourn their losses. Rice's ability to magically draw on the emotions and real life scenarios of family life is really amazing.
This book's message is indeed one of hope, trust and love. Luanne Rice lets you know that amidst the chaos of tragedy, love can find roots, grow sprouts, and blossom gloriously again - one just has to trust and let love in.
I love to see this book made into a movie! I highly recommend this wonderful book and eagerly look forward to reading more of her books!

WHAT AN EMOTIONAL READ!!
By Maudeen Wachsmith
This must have been the beginning of the realization of the talent of Luanne Rice. Written 10 years ago, this book is a tiny bit dated already in that there are no use of cell phones, but overall the book is an emotional read that is hard to put down.

Anne Davis is still reeling from the death of her four-year-old daughter and the abandonment by her husband when she returns to the island home where she was raised. She hasn't been there very long when a fire breaks out. Anne escapes to safety but rushes back into the house to retrieve something. What is it that she would risk her life to save? Fireman Thomas Devlin risks his own life to save Anne who is uninjured. Somewhat of a recluse, Thomas has been living on the island after having been unable to safe his own wife in a fire in which he was terribly scarred.

Despite accusing looks from those who think she was responsible for her daughter's death, Anne settles into island life where she is close to her sister Gabrielle and her niece, Maggie, a teenager who is on her own downward spiral.

Soon both the woman who is scarred on the inside and the man who is scarred on the outside find themselves attracted to one another.

This is a short (312-page) book so it is hard to write more without including spoilers. But suffice to say, things do not always go smoothly for Thomas and Anne. In addition, Anne is mentoring her niece Maggie, who is constantly being tempted to continue a life that will take her right into the hands of danger.

Thomas is one of the most gentle, sweetest men ever. His love and consideration and respect for Anne is almost palpable. Anne's pain over losing her daughter is equally as palpable. One begins to wonder though if they will ever be able to find a future together, especially with Anne's contrite husband back in the picture.

Luanne Rice has written an unforgettable novel set on the New England coast which is sure to make my top 10 of the year; I can't believe I didn't read it earlier.

A Good Read
By K. Weber
I have read "Blue Moon" and "Stone Heart" by Luanne Rice and found "Home Fires" just as interesting. I loved following the relationship between Tom & Anne. I love how Luanne Rice writes about romance but also about family. Her books are interesting and hard to put down. I am currently reading "Cloud Nine" and look forward to finding some of her out-of-print titles. If you are looking for a good read on a cool night, on the beach or a rainy day I suggest "Home Fires" or any other Luanne Rice book.

Prior Bad Acts (Sam Kovac and Nikki Liska), by Tami Hoag

New York Times bestselling author Tami Hoag returns with a thriller that begins with a shocking crime scene you’ll never forget and follows two relentless detectives on a manhunt that ends in a chilling confrontation with the essence of human evil.

It was a crime so brutal, it changed the lives of even the most hardened homicide cops. The Haas family murders left a scar on the community nothing can erase, but everyone agrees that convicting the killer, Karl Dahl, is a start. Only Judge Carey Moore seems to be standing in the way. Her ruling that Dahl’s prior criminal record is inadmissible raises a public outcry—and puts the judge in grave danger.

When an unknown assailant attacks Judge Moore in a parking garage, two of Minneapolis’s top cops are called upon to solve the crime and keep the judge from further harm. Detective Sam Kovac is as hard-boiled as they come, and his wisecracking partner, Nikki Liska, isn’t far behind. Neither one wants to be on this case, but when Karl Dahl escapes from custody, everything changes, and a seemingly straightforward case cartwheels out of control.

The stakes go even higher when the judge is kidnapped—snatched out of her own bed even as the police sit outside, watching her house. Now Kovac and Liska must navigate through a maze of suspects that includes the stepson of a murder victim, a husband with a secret life, and a rogue cop looking for revenge where the justice system failed.

With no time to spare, the detectives are pulled down a strange dark trail of smoke and mirrors, where no one is who they seem and everyone is guilty of Prior Bad Acts.

A Fearsome Doubt (Inspector Ian Rutledge Mysteries), by Charles Todd

Bestselling author Charles Todd has earned a special place among mystery’s elite writers with his acclaimed series featuring Scotland Yard Inspector Ian Rutledge, a former soldier seeking to lay to rest the demons of his past in the aftermath of World War I. But that past bleeds into the present in a complex murder case that calls into question his own honor...and the crimes committed in the name of God, country, and righteous vengeance.

A Fearsome Doubt

In 1912 Ian Rutledge watched as a man was condemned to hang for the murders of elderly women. Rutledge helped gather the evidence that sent Ben Shaw to the gallows. And when justice was done, Rutledge closed the door on the case. But Shaw was not easily forgotten.

Now, seven years later, that grim trial returns in the form of Ben Shaw’s widow Nell, bringing Rutledge evidence she is convinced will prove her husband’s innocence. It’s a belief fraught with peril, threatening both Rutledge’s professional stature and his faith in his judgment. But there is a darker reason for Rutledge’s reluctance. Murder brings him back to Kent where, days earlier, he’d glimpsed an all-too-familiar face beyond the leaping flames of a bonfire. Soon an unexpected encounter revives the end of his own war, as the country prepares for a somber commemoration on the anniversary of the Armistice. To battle the unsettled past and the haunted present at the same time is an appalling mandate.

And the people around him? among them the attractive widow of a friend, a remarkable woman who survived the Great Indian Mutiny; a bitter, dying barrister; and a man whose name he never knew—unwittingly compete with the grieving Nell Shaw. They’ll demand more than Rutledge can give, unaware that he is already carrying the burden of shell shock? and the voice of Hamish MacLeod, the soldier he was forced to execute in the war. The killer in Marling is surprisingly adept at escaping detection. And Ben Shaw’s past is a tangle of unsettling secrets that may or may not be true. Rutledge must walk a tortuous line between two murderers...one reaching out to ruin him, the other driven to destroy him.

From Publishers Weekly
This brilliant and gripping whodunit may well be the best of Todd's six Rutledge novels (Watchers of Time, etc.). Featuring as its protagonist a Scotland Yard inspector who is among the walking wounded after his WWI traumas, the series has always been compelling. This time, Todd ratchets up the psychological pressures by raising doubts about the one aspect of Rutledge's life that he has felt secure about: his prewar accomplishments as a policeman. The widow of a convicted killer, who went to the gallows for preying on the infirm elderly, confronts him with a missing jewelry piece found in a neighbor's possession, suggesting that Rutledge helped execute an innocent man. Reopening the inquiry requires caution not only because of the soul-searching it provokes, which threatens to shatter the inspector's tenuous grasp on sanity, but also because the case contributed to his superior's promotion. This old mystery becomes only one of the puzzles Rutledge must resolve when he's ordered to investigate the poisoning deaths of three disabled soldiers. The solutions to both sets of crimes are logical, satisfying and unexpected, but it is the character of Rutledge himself-intuitive, exquisitely sensitive to mood, the emotions of others and the significance of what is left unsaid-that makes this both an outstanding historical mystery and literate period fiction.
Copyright 2002 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal
Todd's sixth work featuring Inspector Ian Rutledge is a well-crafted addition to his popular historical series (e.g., Watchers of Time). Rutledge is taken aback when a persistent Nell Shaw brings him new evidence that could clear her late husband's name. Had Rutledge and his fellow policemen inadvertently sent an innocent man to his death six years earlier? Reconsidering the pre-World War I case serves to distract the inspector from his current assignment: determining who is killing maimed ex-soldiers in the peaceful countryside in Kent. Rutledge is sidetracked as well by his friendship with Elizabeth Mayhew, the widow of an old school chum. Elizabeth's feelings for a mysterious stranger further complicate Rutledge's investigation. Todd expertly demonstrates how shadows from the past intersect with unsolved murders in the present, revealing tantalizing details about Rutledge's wartime experience in France along the way. Here, Todd downplays the role of Hamish (the dead soldier who lives on in Rutledge's mind), but he remains a key player in the series. A pleasure to read; highly recommended for all public libraries and collections of historical mysteries.

From Booklist
Scotland Yard Inspector Ian Rutledge may be the only sleuth in detective-fiction history to have a ghost as his sidekick. Hamish MacLeod, late of the Scottish brigade, whom Rutledge ordered executed for insubordination during the Great War, provides acerbic commentary on Rutledge's actions and thoughts, effectively underscoring Rutledge's psychological torment. Rutledge's habitual angst is stretched to the breaking point in the latest in this series, when the inspector has reason to fear that he sent the wrong man to the gallows seven years before, in 1912. The hanged man's widow presents Rutledge with new evidence that seems to place the blame on another serial killer. Fearing for his sanity, Rutledge must examine the new evidence and investigate the murder of two ex-soldiers in Kent. Both sets of serial killings become eerily intermeshed. Todd skillfully interweaves an acute psychological portrait with a compelling puzzle. Intelligent and intense history-mystery, at the level of Anne Perry and Bruce Alexander. Connie Fletcher

Excellent Entry in the Best Period Detective Series
By Michael Salcman
One of the better entries in this excellent period detective series; the best since the early three novels of the first four that were all named on the New York Times annual list of the most significant books of the year. The careful investigation of the impact of World War I on daily life in England and on the surviving soldiers continues to be a remarkable feature of the series. Inspector Rutledge suffers from a unique form of post-traumatic stress disorder that results in one of the most enthralling "pairings" of a detective with a "sidekick" since the invention of Holmes and Watson. The Rutledge books are written with true literary panache and are much more than simple genre offerings. I will say nothing about the plot. This book can be enjoyed on many levels without having experienced the earlier novels but I do recommend that they be read in order for maximal enjoyment.

Exciting mystery, but I had questions at the end.
By rerire33
I have five Charles Todd Kindle books and have loved all of them, but this one had me wanting to know more at the end. A Fearsome Doubt left me with questions regarding what happened to some of the characters. Two men the inspector thought might be murderers disappeared and were never mentioned again even though they were main characters and the police were still looking for them. Also, a main character woman was never mentioned again even though she was in love with one of the men suspected of being the murder. The story had a lot of twists and turns to keep you guessing especially with the identity of the murderer this person never factored into the story for having a reason for the killings and seemed extremely unlikely to be the murderer, it took me totally by surprised.

Surprised
By Daryl Kim Hamblin, PhD
Todd never disappoints. I never had a clue and apparently neither did Rutledge. It's an entertaining series and hard to understand how he and his mother write as they do about another country in another time. Maybe a 5 star if I wasn't listening to John Hart's newest novel.

One of my favorite thrillers of the year
By Overworked writer
I'm in publishing, so I get the chance to read quite a few thrillers before they're released, and NO TIME FOR GOODBYE made my top-10 list of the year. The premise is stunning: a teenage girl wakes up to find her family gone. Her father, mother, and brother have simply vanished, leaving her to deal with the painful aftermath of abandonment. Or are they dead? She never finds out... until years later, when she's happily married, with a child of her own. Suddenly new clues arise that make her wonder if her parents and brother may still be alive. But then, why did they leave her?

It's her husband who narrates the tale, and as the story twists and turns, even he wonders about the sanity of his own wife. The ending is a stunning surprise. Deeply satisfying, emotionally wrenching, this is one terrific book.

Not just a thriller
By Robert Deutsch
No Time for Goodbye is marketed as a can't-put-it-down suspense thriller, and while the description is appropriate, the book is much more than that. Like Linwood Barclay's novels featuring Zack Walker, No Time for Goodbye is more character- than plot-driven. Yes, there is a clever, intricately-woven plot, but what distinguises this novel from the typical thriller is that the characters seem like real people, not just convenient plot devices. Barclay has the ability to draw us into the lives of his characters, so we come to genuinely care for them, and don't want anything bad to happen to them. And, most unusual for a novel in the suspense genre, there are some truly touching passages, at least two of which brought tears to my eyes. This is definitely not your run-of-the-mill suspense thriller.

I found Cynthia's character to be annoying and overbearing
By ShootingStarz
This book started off well. A girl (Cynthia) wakes up to find that her whole family is missing. In fact, they have disappeared. As she had gotten drunk (underage) with her boyfriend the previous night, she thinks that maybe her family is just angry at her. She continues with her daily routine until it is confirmed that her family is missing, at which point she goes and lives with an aunt.

Flash forward, she is married with a daughter of her own. She appears on one of those 'Unsolved Mystery" shows. After the show airs, she becomes paranoid - thinking that she is being watched and that someone may have broken into her house. One of the downfalls of her paranoia is the way she hovers over her younger daughter, who craves some independence.

Eventually, the family hires a PI. This is when things begin to go wrong. The PI goes missing, presumably dead. The aunt that raised her is killed. After receiving some questionable clues, she decides to investigate on her own.

I personally found the ending to be predictable. Without revealing too much, I quickly figured out what had most likely happened to Cynthia's family very early on in the book. Additionally, I found Cynthia's character to be annoying and overbearing. I can cut her some slack because of her traumatic childhood, but she seemed to be unable to appreciate the family she had now because she was so busy dwelling on the family she lost in the past. Considering we met Cynthia as a child and saw her grow into an adult with a pre-teen child, I felt as if she never truly grew up past her own childhood. I felt that the ending - where she finds out what happened to her family - was predictable. Maybe not the exact details, but the premise of what happened to her family.

Thunder in the Deep: A Novel of Undersea Military Action and Adventure, by Joe Buff

In his electrifying first novel Joe Buff instantly established himself as the ultimate chronicler of 21st-century warfare by taking military fiction and submarine combat to a new level of authenticity, vision, and power.

Thunder in the Deep picks up where Deep Sound Channel left off, bringing to life a frightening seascape where technology pushes warriors to new extremes, and warriors push technology to the max. This time the difference between victory and defeat hinges on the two most advanced nuclear attack submarines in the world.

The Challenger is the weapon of the future, a ceramic-hulled nuclear attack submarine whose electronic eyes and ears are the most advanced ever created. It is commanded by acting captain Jeffrey Fuller, a former SEAL turned submariner whose aggressiveness has made him a rising star — and sometimes scares the hell out of his crew. Fuller’s mission is to rescue the Virginia-class fast attack sub Texas, now lying on the bottom of the Atlantic just off the Azores.

But the enemy — a newly resurrected and fanatically militaristic Germany — knows where the Texas is, too, and knows the Challenger is coming. It is Challenger the Germans want, dispatching their own high-tech supersub, the Deutschland, to destroy her.

In this war your enemy is a blip on a console hardwired into an integrated nuclear weapons system. Ships are vaporized off the surface of the sea, nuclear shock waves unleash deadly tsunami waves, and smart submarines do battle with smart aircraft sent to hunt them down.

For Jeffrey Fuller and the Challenger, for the men on board the Deutschland, the race beneath the ocean’s surface across a horrific underwater war zone will demand every bit of courage and skill they can muster just to survive.

Before it’s over, the Challenger’s mission is radically redefined: Fuller, his SEALs, and freedom fighter Ilse Reebeck are sent into Germany itself — to plant a nuke right in the gut of the enemy’s power structure.

Thunder in the Deep plunges the reader into the middle of some of the fiercest and most thrilling depictions of underwater warfare ever written. It is an electrifying novel of military strategy and action, a powerful tale of technology and humanity that will have you breathlessly turning pages until the explosive climax.

From Publishers Weekly
Deep under the sea, U.S. submarine captain Jeffrey Fuller is still at it, dodging depth charges, launching torpedoes and otherwise foiling a reinvigorated Nazi Germany from taking over the world. Buff's latest breathlessly paced thriller, set in the year 2011, starts out where last year's Deep Sound Channel left off. The world has been overtaken by a Germany-South Africa alliance. France has fallen. Great Britain is starving. It's up to the United States to prevent nuclear destruction and restore order. Fuller, fresh off victorious duty in the South Atlantic, has now taken over command of the Challenger, the most advanced American sub. His mission is to rescue a disabled sub on the ocean floor near the Azores, then proceed to the Baltic, where he is to lead a secret strike force and destroy a German missile laboratory. Never one to fail, Fuller has only one worry. He knows Germany's high-tech supersub, the Deutschland, is lurking out there. And his arch rival, the ruthless Kurt Eberhard, is at the controls, eager to send Fuller and the Challenger to the bottom of the sea. Long-winded at points and weakened by a silly love affair, the second in the Fuller line nonetheless provides satisfying action for battle lovers. Buff's admiration for submarines and their crews comes across from the start. His meticulous attention to the details of life aboard the Challenger and the obstacles it faces help heighten the drama, particularly during the final fight scene in the Norwegian Sea. The jargon flies fast and heavy, but even readers unfamiliar with the terminology will be able to catch its drift after awhile.

From Library Journal
This is the second in Buff's series of technothrillers devoted to a near-future war in which the United States and England are allied against Germany. As in Buff's first novel, Deep Sound Channel (LJ 5/1/00), two highly sophisticated submarinesAmerica's Challenger, again commanded by former Navy SEAL Jeffrey Fuller, and Germany's Deutschlandare the focus of the story. Despite almost nonstop action, however, this novel fails at several levels. The characters are not well developed, and their dialog is stilted. Worse, Thunder and its predecessor include premises that stretch plausibility. The first is that the fossilized Hohenzollerns could somehow regain control of Germany and reinstate both the monarchy and the militaristic Prussian aristocracy. The second is that both sides could explode tactical nukes like popcorn without any real concern about escalation toward mutually assured destruction. The book just doesn't work. Buff raises the bar for the intense sub thriller yet again.
By A. Neilll
I just finished reading this last night, and all I can say is I am floored. I could not sleep until I finished this, it was just the best thriller I have read in a long time.
This is Joe's second novel following the exploits of the Jeffrey Fuller and the crew of the USS Challenger, and the action is even more gripping than in the first. The conflict is ratcheted up to a whole new level, and the tac nukes fly even more freely.
What a grim conflict, what bold heroes, what great characters.
Joe is the master of near future sub novel, I now measure all others against his work. Tom Clancy eat your heart out. The only downer about this book is waiting until he finishes his next book. I might recommend you read his first book before reading this one, but it should hold up on it's own just fine.

Thunder in the Deep is very well written and very well researched. Since the September 11 Attack, which has changed the world forever, the story is frighteningly plausible. I really enjoyed reading Thunder in the Deep, and will definitely read Joe Buff's next book too!
