Shadow Man (Smoky Barrett), by Cody McFadyen

Once, Special Agent Smoky Barrett hunted serial killers for the FBI. She was one of the best–until a madman terrorized her family, killed her husband and daughter, and left her face scarred and her soul brutalized. Turning the tables on the killer, Smoky shot him dead–but her life was shattered forever.

Now Smoky dreams about picking up her weapon again. She dreams about placing the cold steel between her lips and pulling the trigger one last time. Because for a woman who’s lost everything, what is there left to lose?

She’s about to find out.

In all her years at the Bureau, Smoky has never encountered anyone like him–a new and fascinating kind of monster, a twisted genius who defies profilers’ attempts to understand him. And he’s issued Smoky a direct challenge, coaxing her back from the brink with the only thing that could convince her to live.

The killer videotaped his latest crime–an act of horror that left a child motherless–then sent a message addressed to Agent Smoky Barrett. The message is enough to shock Smoky back to work, back to her FBI team. And that child awakens something in Smoky she thought was gone forever.

Suddenly the stakes are raised. The game has changed. For as this deranged monster embarks on an unspeakable spree of perversion and murder, Smoky is coming alive again–and she’s about to face her greatest fears as a cop, a woman, a mother…and a merciless killer’s next victim.

From Publishers Weekly
This disturbing serial killer drama set in California marks a promising debut for McFadyen, who combines many conventions of the genre but with far more exquisite, intricate results than the norm. FBI agent Smoky Barrett, a haunted, complicated woman, leads a team of investigators assigned to a serial killer task force. Barrett, who escaped the clutches of a different serial killer a year earlier but lost her husband and daughter in the attack, is now tracking a madman known as "Jack Jr.," who believes he's a descendant of Jack the Ripper. He mauls women, mostly prostitutes with Web sites, then sends the videotapes of the killings to Barrett and her crew. The plot follows a typical arc, complete with some nauseating details and predictable twists. There's also a romance between Barrett and a bodyguard that seems tacked on for future installments. Yet McFadyen's writing is crisp and smart, and his scenes pack a visceral punch without being cheap or exploitative. Barrett, for her part, is a memorable protagonist, a deeply troubled woman trying to move on from tragedy, yet possessing special insight into the criminal mind. (June)

From Booklist
A serial killer murdered FBI agent Smokey Barrett's husband and daughter. Smokey killed the fiend but was left deeply scarred. Now, after spending time contemplating suicide, Smokey finds herself drawn back into the game . . . by a new killer who has addressed his latest crime to her personally. First-time novelist McFadyen writes like an old pro, acknowledging the conventions of the serial-killer thriller without being slavishly devoted to them. Smokey, the not-quite-five-foot-tall, sharp-shooting FBI agent, is no standard-issue heroine, and her nemesis, the killer who calls himself Jack Jr., is both chilling and strangely compassionate. A series to watch. David Pitt

Review
"Few men who write serial-killer novels have created a woman of such depth [as heroine Smoky Barrett]…. a powerful mixture of strength and vulnerability, courage and fear. In a strange way, Barrett's mingled roles as woman, victim and avenger make the novel as humane as it is violent….. If you can handle the violence, it will be among the best crime fiction you will read this year."—Washington Post

Suspenseful, gruesome, and Scary...An EXCELLENT read!
By Nick G
Smoky Barret was one of the best serial killer hunters the FBI had, until the day an unspeakable act of violence brought her world crashing down...

With her husband and daughter dead by the hands of a killer that she hunted, Smoky believes she has nothing to live for. Relieved of her duties with the FBI, Smoky is on the verge of suicide, until another act of violence pulls her back into the FBI.

Smoky receives a phone call that one of her best friends has been murdered and the killer has left a message specifically for her. The last thing Smoky needs is to be back in the business that took away everything she loved, but when she hears that her friends daughter, who also happens to be her god-daughter, is in a catatonic state as a result of the horrific ordeal she knows she needs to stop this killer.

As time starts running out and the killer's sick game becomes more brutal, Smoky races to stop a madman before she loses her mind.

'Shadow Man' is the most gruesome, twisted, and scary thriller to come out in a long time. As fast-paced as a book can be, it echoes 'Silence of the Lambs' with a razor-sharp plot, and a killer as ruthless, and terrifying as any in a novel in recent years.

Cody McFadyen has crafted a masterpiece that will rocket up the best-seller lists and establish him as a major new author.

Be warned...this thriller might not be for everyone due to it's sick and graphic killings, but those brave enough to dive in will be rewarded with an amazing, and un-put-downable read.

Do NOT miss this excellent book.

Riveting and relentless--a real stunner!
By Cassie
Meet FBI Special Agent Smoky Barrett. She's 4'10" tall, with dark hair to her waist, and half her face is crosshatched with severely disfiguring scars. Six months ago, a serial killer Smoky was hunting broke into her home, killed her husband and daughter, and raped and tortured her for hours before she was finally able to kill him. Smoky's scars from the trauma are emotional even more than they are physical, so for the last six months she's been on leave, seeing a therapist, trying to decide if she'd rather return to the FBI or put her gun in her mouth.

The decision is made for her when Smoky gets a phone call from one of her coworkers, informing Smoky that her best friend, Annie, has been savagely raped and murdered. And it gets worse: Instead of killing Smoky's goddaughter, Bonnie, the killer tied the girl to her mother's corpse, face to face--and she's still there three days later when the police arrive at the scene, in a near catatonic state. To top it all off, the killer leaves a message at the scene, addressed specifically to Special Agent Smoky Barrett. Only a day ago Smoky was dreaming of suicide; now, she's been thrust back into two roles--mother and FBI agent--and she's not sure she's ready for either one.

But this killer doesn't care about Smoky's emotional state. It doesn't take long for her to realize that she's dealing with a serial killer who's brilliant, twisted, ruthless, charismatic, and beastly all at once, one who somehow knows more about her than she knows about herself, who knows all the secrets she--and the members of her team--have kept hidden for years. He calls himself "Jack Jr." because he believes he's a descendant of Jack the Ripper, and the knowledge that he's being hunted excites him to new levels of violence. To catch him, to survive him, Smoky will have to come face to face with her past--whether she's ready to or not.

If you think the police procedural thriller genre is getting tired, SHADOW MAN--the debut novel by Californian Cody McFadyen--will quickly change your mind. This novel singlehandedly rejuvenates the genre with a compelling cast of characters and an unflinching, riveting plot. It's relentless and suspenseful, an intense look into the mind of a serial killer and the people hunting him.

And it's the people hunting him who are the heart of McFadyen's debut. Smoky is an incredible creation, a haunted and complicated heroine, above and beyond the standard-issue characters usually found in this genre. I'm always a little bit apprehensive when I begin a novel written by a man with a woman as the main character, but McFadyen's portrayal of Smoky and her emotional turmoil is spot-on. He's deftly mastered the ability to write from the perspective of a woman, and he does so with grace and stirring attention to detail. I hope McFadyen revisits Smoky's world in his next novel; she'd be a perfect series heroine (she reminds me of Kathy Reichs' Temperance Brennan in some ways, though maybe she's a bit more tortured than Dr. Brennan).

And while Smoky's supporting team of agents may at first glance seem stereotypical--the computer geek, the unfeeling human robot, the hulking black man with a heart of gold, the untouchable beauty with a sad secret--they are equally well-fleshed-out. The dialogue is spot-on, and the characters interact in compelling and realistic ways.

Although I know this is going to sound strange, this novel was actually a joy to read (despite the brutality of McFadyen's descriptions of the crime scenes--they definitely aren't for the faint of heart). SHADOW MAN is a literary novel as well as a suspenseful one, with sharp, seasoned prose that makes McFadyen seem like someone who's been writing books for years. His first novel definitely doesn't read like most debuts; it's much, much better. In fact, this is one of those books I wish I could thank the author for writing, just because I enjoyed its amazing characters, precise prose, and meticulously orchestrated suspense so much.

In the crime fiction genre, SHADOW MAN is just as good as it gets. It's going to be a joy to watch McFadyen (and his characters) develop as his career continues. SHADOW MAN is sure to be a bestseller this summer, and it definitely gets my highest recommendation!

Gone: An FBI Profiler Novel, by Lisa Gardner

From the bestselling author of Alone and The Killing Hour comes a thriller that goes from heartbreaking to heartstopping in the blink of an eye.…

When someone you love vanishes without a trace, how far would you go to get them back?

For ex-FBI profiler Pierce Quincy, it’s the beginning of his worst nightmare: a car abandoned on a desolate stretch of Oregon highway, engine running, purse on the driver’s seat. And his estranged wife, Rainie Conner, gone, leaving no clue to her fate.

Did one of the ghosts from Rainie’s troubled past finally catch up with her? Or could her disappearance be the result of one of the cases they’d been working– a particularly vicious double homicide or the possible abuse of a deeply disturbed child Rainie took too close to heart?  Together with his daughter, FBI agent Kimberly Quincy, Pierce is battling the local authorities, racing against time, and frantically searching for answers to all the questions he’s been afraid to ask.

One man knows what happened that night. Adopting the alias of a killer caught eighty years before, he has already contacted the press. His terms are clear: he wants money, he wants power, he wants celebrity. And if he doesn’t get what he wants, Rainie will be gone for good.

Sometimes, no matter how much you love someone, it’s still not enough.

As the clock winds down on a terrifying deadline, Pierce plunges headlong into the most desperate hunt of his life, into the shattering search for a killer, a lethal truth, and for the love of his life, who may forever be…gone.

From Publishers Weekly
Former FBI profiler Pierce Quincy's marriage is on the rocks, but things go from bad to worse when his wife, Rainie, goes missing. A kidnapper soon contacts Quincy with a somewhat unusual ransom demand, leaving Quincy and the investigation team with no choice but to play the kidnapper's game to keep Rainie alive. The story is told from alternating points of view, showing Quincy's efforts to find his wife and Rainie's struggle against her cruel captor. The plot is formulaic and derivative, but the abridgment makes it simple to follow, so listeners should have no trouble keeping up. Kairos's voice is light and pleasant, and while her narration is not superb, it does get the job done. Kairos modulates her voice sufficiently to distinguish between male and female voices, but the accents she attempts are beyond her and come off sounding a bit silly. For the most part, the narration is engaging and effectively propels the story forward, but Kairos—and Gardner—occasionally lays it all on a bit too thick, taking the narrative (and the narration) into the realm of tepid melodrama.

At the center of this mix of police procedural and psychological thriller is Lorraine "Rainie" Conner, an ex-cop with a drinking problem whose car is found abandoned on a country road in Oregon on a particularly rainy November night. Leading the missing-person search is Carlton Kincaid, a no-nonsense state cop who'd rather be home with his wife and infant son. The search team calls in Pierce Quincy not because he's a former FBI profiler but because Rainie is his estranged wife, their marriage having come to a halt when her drinking resumed after 15 years of sobriety. Next on the scene is Quincy's daughter, Kimberly, who--you guessed it--is an FBI agent (or "feebie") working out of the Atlanta office. All these great minds converge to try to solve the mysterious disappearance of Rainie. Could she have been so depressed over her failed sobriety and marriage that she turned a standard-issue Glock on herself? As friendships build and mysteries unfold, Gardner keeps the suspense cranked high. Recommend this to fans of Lee Child. Mary Frances Wilkens

My first Gardner thriller, Gone is great!
By Bill Garrison
Gone is the newest thriller by Lisa Gardner and the first book I have read by this author. The book feels fresh and alive and there is no need to have read previous books to enjoy this book. Rainnie Connor has problems. She had an abusive childhood and currently is haunted by past cases and has a drinking problem.

She disappears while on a latenight drive, and team is formed to find her. Leading the team is Quincy, her estranged husband. The novel cuts back and forth between scenes of the police trying to find suspects, Quincy reaching out to his FBI agent daughter to help him find his wife, and of Rainnie in the hands of the kidnapper.

The are plenty of twists and turns in this fast paced novel. Rainnie is haunted by a past case of a murdered girl and her mother. I don't know if that was from a previous Gardner novel, but just the brief description it got in this book haunted me.

Gone is an exciting kidnapping mystery. The excitement comes from the characters and their situations, not the plot's ultimate outcome.

Another complexity of damaged people and terrible crimes.
By Kindle Customer
The main characters have made major changes in life style. Each for their own purposes. They deal with individual change and family relationships changes. They support each other.

The crimes this time are against children. The perpetrators inflict horrific damage. Each for their own personal reasons. The crimes haunt those who pursue the criminals and lead to unhealthy coping in some cases. New characters join the team. Former participants take on New roles. The reader has many options to consider and cannot be certain of the outcome until the very end.

A strong recommendation for reading this book is giving end.

Don't Look Back, by Amanda Quick

In this most entrancing tale of mystery and romance by the New York Times bestselling author AMANDA QUICK, lovers and partners-in-crime investigators Lavinia Lake and Tobias March continue their exciting newfound relationship, with its delicious mix of risky business, rising passion, and now--murder.

As if a head for business and a nose for trouble aren’t enough to distinguish fiercely independent Lavinia Lake from the other women of London’s fashionable Claremont Lane, there is one more feature to set her apart. Lavinia is also well versed in the practice of mesmerism, an extraordinary gift that far surpasses mere charm and physical appeal. Nobody knows this better than the usually coolheaded Tobias March, who seems to have fallen hopelessly under her spell. Fortunately for all, however, Lavinia uses her powers for good. And ever since a tragedy involving one of her subjects, she has even retired them in favor of her work with Lake and March, a joint venture providing “discreet private inquiries for individuals of quality.” Celeste Hudson, the stunningly beautiful young wife of a family friend and fellow mesmerist, would surely count herself among such individuals--were she still alive, that is. While mythology’s Medusa could turn men to stone, lovely Celeste was more accustomed to turning them to jelly. In fact, unbeknownst to her husband, Howard, the ambitious Celeste was planning to use her talents to forge a new future in Society--one that would not include him. Sadly, her plans were cut short when she was murdered. Only a gentleman’s cravat wound around her lovely neck remained for evidence--small compensation for the strange and priceless bracelet that may have been snatched from her wrist as she drew her last breath.

As a result, Lake and March are soon in Howard Hudson’s employ on the trail of the killer. But Tobias is convinced the dashing widower is more interested in tracking down the missing relic. If so, Howard is not alone. Any number of ruthless types are after the very same antiquity, whose centerpiece is an unusual blue cameo of inestimable value and supposed legendary powers--powers of immeasurable worth to anyone in Howard’s line of work.

Together, Lake and March undertake a tantalizing investigation that leads them from the glittering ballrooms of the ton to London’s seediest taverns to a mesmerist whose therapies include treating ladies suffering from “hysteria” is a a most unconventional method--and, not least of all, to the darkest reaches of men’s psyches. Along the way, Don’t Look Back becomes a completely mesmerizing read as the irrepressible Lavinia and Tobias mix business with pleasure....

Amazon.com Review
Setting: Regency England

Sensuality: 7

A London lady who's skilled in the practice of mesmerism, Lavinia Lake has launched a new career as a private investigator, a startling and slightly scandalous occupation for a woman in Regency England. Strong-willed and independent, Lavinia isn't a typical society widow, a fact which alternately attracts and frustrates her enigmatic partner, Tobias March. Lavinia and Tobias have a prickly and passionate relationship, and Tobias is determined to protect her, while Lavinia is just as determined to be an equal partner in their business.

When the wife of mesmerist Dr. Howard Hudson is murdered and a rare antique bracelet known as the Blue Medusa disappears, the doctor seeks Lavinia's help. Tobias is reluctant to become involved in the matter but Lavinia feels compelled to help her late father's associate. Their attempt to uncover the murderer leads them to obscure antiquities dealers, secret organizations, amoral heirs, and ladies of the evening. And when a madman threatens Lavinia's life, only Tobias can hope to save her.

Lavinia Lake and Tobias March began their adventures in the novel Slightly Shady, and in this second installment, author Jayne Ann Krentz, writing under her Amanda Quick pseudonym, further develops the couple's romantic relationship while entangling them in a murder mystery enhanced by an exploration of ancient British jewelry. The author also introduces a charming secondary couple in the mix of eccentric and interesting cast members. Fans of historical romance and mystery will welcome this latest offering from bestselling author Krentz. --Lois Faye Dyer

From Publishers Weekly
In this sequel to last year's Slightly Shady, bestseller Quick brings back the winning detective duo of Lake and March for another mysterious romp through Regency London. Settling in to a partnership both professional and personal, Lavinia Lake and Tobias March take on a case deeply intertwined with Lavinia's own past. An old family friend, the mesmerist Dr. Howard Hudson, introduces the couple to his beautiful young wife, Celeste, and not long after, Celeste is brutally murdered. Was she murdered for the sake of an ancient jewel, the Blue Medusa, reputed to confer upon the wearer mysterious powers? The Blue Medusa is missing, stolen from the household of the senile nobleman who last possessed it. As the investigation proceeds apace, both Lavinia's niece Emmeline and Tobias's brother-in-law, Anthony, insist that they wish to become investigators, too, apprenticing themselves to the older couple despite objections. A secondary romance between the younger couple offers a charming counterpoint to the growing relationship between Lavinia and Tobias. While Tobias endeavors to protect Lavinia from the danger looming from her own past, Lavinia goes about solving the case in her own way, resulting in a dramatic confrontation with the killer. Though the suspense is low-key throughout, Quick nevertheless pulls the reader along with her eminently readable blend of humor, sharp dialogue and well-paced plotting. Readers can only hope that they have not seen the last of Lake and March.

From School Library Journal
Adult/High School-In this second volume of a romance-mystery series, discreet inquirers Lavinia Lake and Tobias March (Regency-era private detectives) team up to search for a murderer and thief as they investigate the death of Celeste Hudson and the disappearance of the ancient Blue Medusa bracelet. Teens fascinated with the history of hypnosis will be interested in this story as Lavinia's past as a mesmerist is important, but it was the victim who used her mesmeric skills unscrupulously. They will also meet a "doctor" who treats wealthy female patients with a machine to induce orgasms. The novel is full of witty dialogue that will evoke smiles as the males compete with the females, and the ladies try to be independent in a society that frowns on such behavior. Quick describes the era with accurate details in a fast-moving mystery with surprising twists.

Enjoyable, fast-paced mystery
By LindaDM
Second book in the Lake/March series, this story gets more into Lavinia's history, when an old family friend appears on her doorstep the same day she glimpses an old enemy on the streets. The old friend is a mesmerist, a profession Lavinia's parents and Lavinia herself once engaged in. Lavinia's relationship with Tobias March is getting more intimate as well. They are falling in love but act like porcupines at times- all spines and prickly but very much drawn to each other. When the old friend's wife is murdered, he retains Lake and March (or March and Lake) to find the killer. But as usual, things are not as they seem, and rapid developments bind the two lovers in a complicated situation where one commission has become three outwardly unrelated jobs that involve persons willing to kill to keep their secrets or get what they want. Or to get Mrs. Lake and Mr. March to stand down, which, of course isn't going to happen.

This one is better than the first book in the series, I think. We learn more about Anthony, Emmeline, Joan Dove, and meet Lord Vale, admirer of Joan and collector of rare antiquities. Tobias places him on his suspect list early, but finds him to be a man he can respect and possibly, a kindred spirit. I read it in one sitting, can't wait to get into the next one.

I enjoyed this book even more than the first in the series !
By A Customer
While I always enjoy historical fiction in a series, the second installment rarely 'grabs' my attention as much as the the first one did. This book, however, is an exception. I was captivated right from the start, and enjoyed every moment of reading "Don't Look Back". I am thrilled to discover there is a 3rd book, and can't wait to begin that one.
That said, I am still confused as to what exactly "mesmerism" is. Because it is discussed so much in both novels, I had expected there to be a more thorough explanation, especially since the idea is so central to the story. Since it's not a commonly used term, and since there isn't much information on the topic, I believe that Ms. Quick should have included more than just passing references to this archaic science. I believe I would have enjoyed the novel even more if this point had been clearer.
Regardless, this is a delightful book, but I'd certainly recommend reading "Slightly Shady" before beginning this one.

Now Harry must solve what seems to everyone else an open-and-shut case. Her four-legged partners —sleuthing cats Mrs. Murphy and Pewter and corgi Tee Tucker—see it Harry’s way. From Publishers Weekly
At the start of bestseller Brown's uneven 15th Mrs. Murphy Mystery (after 2007's Puss 'n Cahoots), Mary Minor Harry Haristeen, the former postmistress of Crozet, Va., is saddened to hear that a local ob-gyn has been killed—either by a resentful friend, who thought the doc had once slept with his wife, or by prolife fanatics who were angered by his willingness to perform abortions. Next, a wealthy middle-aged woman is murdered at a fund-raiser. Harry's friend Tazio Chappars appears to be the most likely suspect, but Harry is sure of Tazio's innocence and begins to wonder if the two deaths are connected. Character development is frustratingly thin, and rather than exploiting the rich Virginia setting, Brown's local color extends only to superficial clichés (wealthy Virginia women wear understated jewelry, and the ladies with the flashiest gems are tacky new money). Harry's three pets, who pop up having testy, italicized conversations, are generally a distraction, not integral to the novel. Still, the well-paced plot builds to an unpredictable and complex conclusion. (Feb.)

From Booklist
The sixteenth entry in Rita Mae Brown’s Mrs. Murphy mystery series finds Harry Haristeen and her cotererie of feline friends (including the indomitable Mrs. Murphy) springing into action after a local socialite is murdered at a fund-raiser, and Harry’s friend, Tazio, is found standing over the body, knife in hand. Of course, Harry sets out to clear Tazio and gets herself into the usual pack of trouble before being helped out by the furry bunch. The well-limned local ambience, which has a genuine feel for Virginia sensibilities, as well as the expected humor, mystery, and crisp characterizations, human and animal, add up to another pleaser for the series fans. --Sally Estes

I still enjoyed this book
By Michael O. Byrd
I miss Miranda a lot. I miss the post office. These, to me helped provide so much of the charm in this series. The charm more than anything seems to be diminished since Miranda got a beau and Harry quit the p.o.

I'm always game for a little kitty/doggy rescue squad action, but I agree with other's in that I think now that Harry is getting careless in allowing herself to come to harm. For which we then get an obligatory rescue complete with ankle biting and the jumping on of backs.

I was a little disappointed that by the end it started rushing to conclusions. It felt a little more like a 5 minute ending on a t.v. show than the well crafted end of a good mystery book.

I'm a little mixed on the political infusion in recent books. As a flaming liberal I'm not opposed to Ms. Brown's politics so much as I feel awkward about them being in these books. I share these books with several friends who range from liberal to conservative, older to younger. I'm waiting for the more conservative or older friends to come screaming at me about lesianism and abortion being dealt with so directly. (Though oddly enough it hasn't actually happened.)

That said, perhaps these are things that should be in these books as they are ideas which should be discussed and debated more openly in our society. These books have always had a pastoral and virtuous charm and I think some people feel that liberals have no claim on pastoral virtue. It's refreshing to see good wholesome people who don't quite fit into that right-leaning ideal of country life.

In the end, this book is still witty and fun albeit a tad political, but unlike another cat series I won't mention, they are still a great deal of fun to read. I can't wait for the next one.

fast & fun, a bit sloppy
By desert_gal
I've been reading this series since it started, and it's been a fun ride most of the time. While I do agree that Brown has begun to use her books as a soapbox for her views on current events--oh, well, c'est la vie. That's her choice, and it also can make the characters come more alive. I do concede that she'd be better off sharing most of her opinions in essays or a blog, however. These books are not quite the correct vehicle.

In this latest installment, Harry is once again intrigued by mysterious events, especially since her good friend Tazio Chappers seems to be the cut-and-dried murderer of a wealthy newcomer--and Harry does not for a second believe Tazio did it! I always find Harry's interest in solving crimes and her love for her friends and community endearing. The sloppiness of the plot comes from its transparency and its too-fast ending. Brown spent a lot of time on her soapbox that could perhaps have been better spent properly developing the plot and the characters in question.

I also wanted to see a bit more of the old coziness of Crozet and its townfolk. For instance, while I love Harry's new life with Fair, growing her grapes and sunflowers, not struggling quite as much for money any longer, I do miss seeing the relationship she had with Miranda, her time at the post office, etc. Seems all the characters are getting new interests that go outside of Crozet and into the wider world. Not that that's a bad thing, at all--people need to grow. But could they grow while still retaining their closeness to their home and its people?

Overall, this was a typical fun Sneaky Pie mystery, with the same loving animals, uniquely Southern name-calling (Mrs. Murphy and Pewter get into a hissy fight in the back of a car around a discussion of their nether regions, which is hilarious--I think my cats have done the same thing), and small-town community connections I've become accustomed to. Perhaps just a bit more focus on tightening the plotting of the actual mysteries in the future would be in order? This ending was not quite as dramatic as some in the past. But I'm still going to keep reading the series!

Quite a few holes.
By Shirley Schwartz
I have been finding that the Mrs. Murphy mystery series is getting a bit sloppy. There appears to be a lot of holes in the plot in this one as well. The book starts out with two storylines, that appear to meld together, and then ends up with two storylines again. It makes it a bit difficult to follow the plot. But we do have the people of Crozet (although not so much of Miranda), and that helps, and we have the animal characters which help to carry this story along. I just feel a bit disappointed because the book seemed rushed, and so much didn't make sense. I do hope that Ms. Brown will pick up in the next book because I have enjoyed Harry and her animal companions.

A Lady Awakened (Blackshear Family), by Cecilia Grant

In Cecilia Grant’s emotionally rich and deeply passionate Regency romance debut, a deal with a rumored rogue turns a proper young woman into . . . A Lady Awakened.

Newly widowed and desperate to protect her estate and beloved servants from her malevolent brother-in-law, Martha Russell conceives a daring plan. Or rather, a daring plan to conceive. After all, if she has an heir on the way, her future will be secured. Forsaking all she knows of propriety, Martha approaches her neighbor, a London exile with a wicked reputation, and offers a strictly business proposition: a month of illicit interludes . . . for a fee.

Theophilus Mirkwood ought to be insulted. Should be appalled. But how can he resist this siren in widow’s weeds, whose offer is simply too outrageously tempting to decline? Determined she’ll get her money’s worth, Theo endeavors to awaken this shamefully neglected beauty to the pleasures of the flesh—only to find her dead set against taking any enjoyment in the scandalous bargain. Surely she can’t resist him forever. But could a lady’s sweet surrender open their hearts to the most unexpected arrival of all . . . love?

Featured Guest Review: Eloisa James on A Lady Awakened

Eloisa James holds an M.Phil. from Oxford University, a Ph.D. from Yale is currently an associate professor and head of the Creative Writing program at Fordham University in New York City. Her "double life" as an academic and a romance writer is a source of fascination to the media and her readers. In her professorial guise, she's written a New York Times op-ed defending romance, as well as articles published everywhere from women's magazines such as More to writers' journals such as the Romance Writers' Report.

Martha Russell is a proper, laced-up widow, who finds more pleasure in charitable acts than she ever did in her marriage bed. Theophilus Mirkwood is a known rake whose all-too-true reputation has basically gotten him thrown out of London.

There couldn't be a couple less likely to fall in love--which is exactly why it's so satisfying when they do. Cecilia Grant has given us an incredibly sexy and surprisingly sweet debut that hits the perfect note for a classic "opposites attract" storyline.

Like so many great romances (and maybe real-life love stories too), A Lady Awakened starts with an indecent proposal. Martha's husband just died and she needs to become pregnant immediately--yesterday!--in order to pass off her baby as the heir to the Russell estate. If she doesn't, not only will she be destitute, but the estate will be seized by her late husband's cruel, lascivious brother.

There's one problem: in order to become pregnant, she needs to go to bed with someone. Well, who better than her notorious new neighbor Theophilus? Martha doesn't expect to get any pleasure from their bargain … and at first she doesn't. But everything changes when their relationship becomes more than just physical.

There's so much I adore about this novel--from the hilariously awkward scene in which Martha propositions Theo to the immensely sensual one in which she first succumbs to pleasure. It's not just that Theo is great in bed: there are plenty of historical novels featuring heroes with remarkable skills in that area. What makes A Lady Awakened stand out is that Cecilia Grant pulls the heartstrings of a much deeper story, the tale of how both Theo and Martha change and grow together. I really loved how they transformed one another. Martha, in particular, gives Theo a sense of purpose that allows him to escape a fairly meaningless existence.

I kept thinking about these two long after finishing the last page, and I'm sure you will, too. It's the kind of romance that sticks with you. If you read only one debut this year, this is the one to read.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Desperate times call for desperate measures, and Martha Russell is a desperate woman. After her husband Richard’s unexpected death, ownership of Seton Park, her current home, will revert to the new heir, the reprehensible James Russell. Unless, that is, Martha is pregnant with Richard’s son. While Martha knows she is not pregnant, the rest of the countryside does not, which gives Martha one month to rectify the situation. Martha’s new neighbor, Theophilus Mirkwood, is rumored to have been banished to the countryside to repent his wicked life in London. All Martha has to do is convince Theo to agree to a month of discreet trysts with her, and she may wind up with the heir she desperately needs. The only problem is that Martha did not factor falling in love with Theo into her simple business proposition. Grant expertly imbues her elegantly written, emotionally powerful debut with a compelling combination of exquisitely nuanced characters and lusciously sensual romance. Sweet, poignant, and completely satisfying, A Lady Awakened is a romance to treasure. --John Charles

I'm stunned (but obviously not speechless)
By Ann Elliot
This book could not have surprised me more if it had fallen from the sky and smacked me on the head.

I chose an ARC of the book and felt some regret when it arrived. The characters are not immediately likeable and the plot is morally reprehensible.

Martha, the heroine, is prudish, judgemental and a hypocrite of great magnitude who mentally condemns a congregation member for falling asleep during Sunday service, even as she is plotting to cheat a stranger of his inheritance by doing her best to become pregnant by another stranger.

Theo, the hero, is the hapless new neightbor who agrees to help Martha in her pregnancy plot. He is 26, but his maturity level is that of a 15-year-old.

Theo's sense of worth derives from his only skill--pleasing women in bed. Martha's sense of worth derives from her image as a morally upright pillar of rectitude. Their daily "exercises" in bed are doomed. He is duty bound to give her pleasure; she cannot let herself feel pleasure or she will cease to be a "good" person.

The daily bedding contains some of the most awkward, frustrating, funny, miserable sex scenes ever written.

After a chapter or two, like the moment in "Wizard of Oz" when the screen goes from black and white to color, the author's marvelous writing style kicks in and the story is transformed. Every word is chosen with care to make the tale feel authentic and often to make the reader smile. Even Martha is careful about word choice as she constantly stumbles onto double entendres and corrects herself.

The characters, like real people, are much more than they seem on the surface. They have faults, strengths, childhood difficulties to overcome and opportunities for growth.

The two find tolerance, affection and then love as they face difficulties together, not the least of which are their attempts to improve the indigent Weaver family, including a taciturn mother, large brood of children, incessantly squalling baby and a huge pig determined to move into the family living quarters.

Readers looking for a standard romance novel will be disappointed by this book and would do well to read a few reviews to know what to anticipate.

Readers looking for a charming, well-written gem of a romantic book will find this one a stunner.

Grant's writing is exquisite.
By OLT
When you set down on paper the plot to this HR, it doesn't look all that appealing and might even seem offensive to some persons' sensibilities. Newly-widowed Martha Russell wants to retain control of her late husband's estate and can only do so by producing an heir within the appropriate number of months of her first year of mourning. Unfortunately, she was not pregnant when her husband died. What to do? Hire the stud services of newly-arrived neighbor Theo Mirkwood, whose father has exiled him to their nearby Pencarragh estate as punishment for his wayward ways. She has one month to conceive or it's off to live with her brother and his wife and her brother-in-law will come to take over the Russell property.

Well, she's not as mercenary as that sounds. Said brother-in-law is not a good person. He seduces helpless women, wastes money, neglects his wife, and would care not at all about the welfare and education of the tenants at the estate or even about the condition of the estate itself. Martha wants desperately to protect those people who have been relying on her during her time as mistress of the Russell property.

Since there's a deadline for getting pregnant, we have sex scenes early on in the book, but it's business-arrangement sex for a good part of the story. Martha is bound and determined not to have any pleasure in their encounters and encourages Theo to just do it and get it over with every time they have sex. No dawdling around with unnecessary kissing and foreplay. Enjoying the experience would only add to the guilt she's already feeling about what she is doing.

Well, the rest you just have to read. Theo isn't into necrophilia so he's working towards getting some response from her in bed, while she is blocking his attempts at all cost. And at the same time, out of bed they are becoming acquainted with each other as real people, not just sex partners. Martha begins to see the goodness and responsibility hiding in Theo's fun-loving persona. Theo sees the real caring and feeling woman that cool and aloof Martha works so hard to hide from others.

The best thing about the book is the beautiful writing. I venture to say I enjoyed the way the story is written much more than the story itself. This is polished, flowing, wonderful writing and was a joy to read. Very few authors of mass market paperback HRs write this well. IMO, Grant is in a class with Joanna Bourne and Meredith Duran, two exceptionally talented writers of HRs.

Other books and movies have tried variations on this theme of using or hiring someone, not a lover, to procreate but this one by Grant is by far the best HR with that theme that I have read. Other recent attempts have been Lorraine Heath's Waking Up With the Duke (London's Greatest Lovers) and Anna Campbell's My Reckless Surrender but Grant's is better than those. Perhaps comparable in romance and poignancy to the Grant book is the movie Firelight (Le lien secret)- Sophie Marceau (Import - All Regions), a beautiful movie set in the 1800s.

Took a bit too long for the lady to awaken
By TinaW
I would characterize this book as one where the parts are better than the whole.

This is the author's debut novel and I must give my biggest praise for the writing. There are moments of absolute brilliance in the writing here. Places where Theo's thoughts are almost poetic or where one of Martha's observations (usually about male sexuality) is so dry and dead-on that I was startled into laughter.

She also created a very strong sense of place. I felt very much the poverty of the tenant farmers on Theo's land and the class distinctions that existed between the titled class, local gentry and the laborers.

Theo was also a well developed character that didn't feel like a typical romance hero. He is a wastrel son and acts like it. But not in the dissipated, don't-give-a-damn alpha hero way. But rather in the way a spoiled heir would behave. He has no discernible skills but his father exiles him to their Sussex estate to make him grow up a little. Underneath it all he is a good person who through the book learns responsibility. He is also warm and approachable. And while you might sometimes wonder at the ease in which he enters into a bargain with a total stranger to make a baby, you are never in doubt of his sincerity in trying to connect with the heroine on both a physical and emotional level.

And therein lies what I think is one of the more problematic issues with the novel. The heroine Martha. In some ways she is a great character construct. She is somewhat of a reformer, believing in education of women and the bettering of the poor. She is high minded and somewhat of a rigid moralist (the whole conceive-a-baby-and-pass-it-off-as-your-dead-husband's-to-keep-an-estate scheme notwithstanding). I really didn't mind the more rigid aspects of her personality or even the prickliness of her nature, necessarily. But Somehow everything added up to her being a very distant person who I found to be hard to really like. I really tried to put my finger on why I found it so difficult to warm to her. In the end I think it is because her inner dialogue and thoughts didn't really let me in. Her private thoughts were just as distancing as her external actions. So as a reader I couldn't really get in sympathy with her.

There was also a layer of hypocrisy there as well. Truthfully Martha does acknowledge this, but still, I couldn't help but dislike the fact that she felt very moralistic and judgey regarding Theo's attempts to actually get her to enjoy sex. She couldn't like having sex because that would be wrong. But propositioning a stranger to get you pregnant to steal an inheritance was ok?

My other main issue with the book is the pacing. The lion's share of the book took too much time with Martha being distant & moral and judgey and with Theo trying his mighty best to thaw her out. It was sometimes uncomfortable to read about her unbending will to stay unaffected and his disappointment in his efforts. It had the effect of making the book feel like it was standing still. The bedroom scenes served to stall the forward momentum because it seems like Theo was making no progress whatsoever.

When Martha gets into the groove, begins to finally(!) enjoy herself, I noticed only about 77 pages left in the book. But it was as if that opened up a dam or something because those last 77 pages moved much better than the first 269 pages. The pace crackled, events got exciting, I couldn't wait to see how the whole plan turned out. While I struggled a bit to get into that first part of the book, that last bit became a real page turner.

I liked how things did turn out and I liked the ending. So while this book didn't work for me on some levels, I would definitely look for future books by this writer.

From Publishers Weekly
Canadian author Barclay's previous novel, No Time for Goodbye (2007), a Thriller Award–finalist, showed that he knows how to put ordinary people into extraordinarily dangerous circumstances. Barclay works some of that same magic in his second stand-alone thriller, which opens with the shooting deaths of Albert and Donna Langley and their teenage son, Adam, in their Promise Falls, N.Y., home one hot summer night. Bill Cutter, a neighbor who works as a gardener and was once the driver and glorified gofer without an ounce of self-respect for the town's nasty mayor, and Bill's wife, Ellen, soon find themselves wondering who would want to kill the Langleys and what part their sullen 17-year-old son and Adam's friend, Derek, may have played in the tragedy. While this one isn't quite up to the standard of No Time for Goodbye—its convoluted plot creaks occasionally—readers will zip through it with delight. (Oct.)

From Booklist
Derek Cutter, a high-school student, takes advantage of his neighbors’ vacation and hides in their house when they leave. He envisions his girlfriend coming over and having a quiet run of the house and a chance to get to know each other better. While calling her to come over, he is surprised by the neighbors’ return. Thinking they forgot something, he hides in the crawlspace in the basement and waits for them to leave. A few minutes later, however, he hears a doorbell and gunshots. When he finally gets the courage to go upstairs, he discovers their dead bodies. The ensuing chaos will disrupt a small town and devastate him and his family. Barclay tackles a scary scenario and with the proper twists and turns creates an engaging thriller. Excessive profanity sometimes distracts to the point of grinding the story line to a halt, but that quibble aside, this is a gripping read. --Jeff Ayers

Barclay is Fast Becoming One of My Favourite Authors!
By James N Simpson
I hadn't even heard of Linwood Barclay less than a month ago but after discovering his sensational novel No Time for Goodbye I eagerly looked for everything else he'd written. Too Close to Home is another sensational Harlan Coben style novel with a totally different plot but written in the same way that No Time for Goodbye was.

Like with No Time for Goodbye we the reader are initially inside the head of not who will become the main character of the book but one of their family members in their teens. This time around we've got Derek whose got a plan to climb into his next door neighbours, the Langley's wallspace, so when they lock their house and depart on a trip he can unlock the backdoor and let his girlfriend Penny in for a few days of alone time and the action he's been waiting all his life for. Problem is his plan starts falling apart when the Langley's unaware he is in their house open the front door and are gunned down. Derek is undiscovered and spared as obviously no one expected him to be there, only he can't tell his parents or anyone else he was there or they'll punish him.

The main character of narrator of the book is Derek's father Jim Cutter. Jim has no idea why the family next door was gunned down but theorises his family is safe due to even if being a totally random killing the killers wouldn't come back to the same area twice. Promise Falls is a small town after all. It is only when he discovers some of his son's activities with the neighbour boy before he was shot, and his son is in fact in possession of something the killers may have been after, and is also reminded of the fact that many people including the postman have mistaken the Langley's house for his address that the question dawns on him, what if the killers went to the wrong house?

This is a can't put down thriller with a mystery angle as we the reader ponder until the final pages why were the Langley's murdered? Jim Cutter is an extremely likeable character as well. The book also has its fair share of unlikeable villains too which makes it that much more enjoyable. Plus Barclay while telling this story, gives a few brief paragraphs of a novel called A Missing Part, which is quite interesting. Hopefully like Dean Koontz did with Santa's Twin which we saw glimpses of in his earlier novel Mr. Murder, we'll one day see A Missing Part written in full as well.

Too Close to Home is a great book, can't wait to see what else Linwood Barclay has written! If you haven't read Barclay yet but like Harlan Coben, Joseph Finder, James Siegel, Matthew Klein and the other masters of this genre, then you'll love Too Close to Home!
