Traupman wins again
By J. Devine
Professor John Traupman produced a wonder book for Latinists, cross word puzzle workers, or just those who want to know a little about the Latin connection of English. It is the finest concise, small in size, {It fits in my field jacket pocket.} Latin/English, English/Latin dictionary in the world. His paradigms for Latin grammar, in the front of the dictionary is wonderful. There are no better. Essential for the Latin student, teacher, or Classicist. Valuable for those who just want to read Latin works in the original.

Best Latin dictionary of its size for the money
By L. Higley
Traupman's New College Latin and English Dictionary is the best small dictionary you can get for the money, bar none. Dr. Traupman really does know his words. I have several copies stashed in various places, and give them to my students as "praemia" (rewards.) There are cuter dictionaries, and bigger ones, but this one will definitely see you safely through your undergrad work (and part of your grad work too) and will be the dictionary you grab as you are looking for just the right definition of most of the Latin that life might chance to throw your way.

Perfect for students of all levels
By A. Palmer
Having studied Latin as a high school student, undergraduate, and graduate student, I can say that this is the one portable and concise dictionary that's accompanied me through the years. It is good to have a larger and more comprehensive dictionary for reference- but you can throw this one in your backpack and go. I especially like the fact that there are enough specialized words in this dictionary- from Catullus, Caesar, Horace, etc.- to last a student through advanced translation courses. Much better than the Oxford portable Latin dictionary, and others I've tried.

A passionate new historical romance in Madeline Hunter's nationally bestselling Seducer series. This one features a fifth member of the London Dueling Society, the reserved, enigmatic lawyer to the Laclere family: Julian Hampton. All his life, it seemed, Julian had been in love with Penelope, now Countess of Glasbury. And when he learned the horrors she had endured at the hands of her vicious husband, Julian was instrumental in arranging for her escape to Italy. But he has never forgotten the love of his childhood, the woman he had rescued first as a "damsel in distress" when she was a girl, and then for real once she had blossomed into woman. When Penelope returns secretly to London, Julian is the one she turns to, even though her trust in him puts both their reputations, and ultimately their lives, in peril.

From Publishers Weekly
The title belies the darkness at the core of Hunter's Regency romance cum legal thriller, the fifth in a series that started with The Seducer. Penelope, countess of Glasbury, has been separated for years from her abusive husband, who has yet to sire an heir and now demands the return of his wayward wife. Penelope seeks help from Julian Hampton, family friend and solicitor, who has long hidden his own passion for Penelope. Her appeal forces them into an irresistible proximity. As the earl's demands grow more insistent—and violent—Julian and Penelope must uncover her estranged husband's deepest secrets if she is ever to be free of him. The two principals both have charm, but in the book's second half, every character seems determined to sacrifice himself or herself for others without telling anyone, until the frustrated reader longs for someone to break a confidence or two. Also, because Julian is a "romantic" in the courtly sense, the love scenes aren't as frequent as some might like. Hunter's fans will be content with this offering, but the underdeveloped romance and suspense suggest that the series may be suffering from fatigue.

From Booklist
Stoic and enigmatic solicitor Julian Hampton is the soul of propriety. Men trust him as a confidant; women find him mysterious. Julian remains polite but inscrutable, deeply in love for years with someone he can never have and who has no idea he feels this way about her: Penelope, countess of Glasbury and sister to his good friend, viscount LaClere. Long ago, she confided her abuse by Glasbury to Julian, and he made sure she was safe and away from England. Glasbury has decided he needs an heir and is following her in order to force her back. Once again she turns to Julian. This time, Julian is determined to ensure her safety once and for all. To do it, he risks his professional and personal reputations, and even his life, to spare Penelope the horror of her marriage. Every woman dreams of being the object of some man's secret passion, and readers will be swept away by Hunter's hero and her latest captivating romance. Maria Hatton

Not quite enough
By P jolly
Both the H and the h deserved a better story. They were both interesting charachters from the previous volumes in the series, but they just came off as stiff and boring. The story started well, then never quite seemed to take off for me. None of the people were quite compelling enough. Even the villain was just without power or intrigue . So far the first and fourth books in the series are the best.

this is not their favorite in the series
By ITM
For some, this is not their favorite in the series, but I appreciate a historical hero without a title. Smart writing and complex plots, as always from a favorite author.

Simply exquisite
By Neilisa
Penelope is, once again, on the run for her life. For years, she has enjoyed living a life estranged from her evil husband, the Earl of Glasbury. He is a man with sadistic sexual tastes who keeps a house far from London, unknown to anyone, staffed with Jamaican slaves who are constant victims of his sexual abuse. Now the Earl is determined to have Penelope back to bear him an heir, but Penelope will not have him. As soon as she discovered she was being followed, she fled Naples for London, to the arms of the only person who can save her from Glasbury, Julian Hampton.

Julian successfully kept Penelope hidden while she pondered her options. She wanted to flee to America but Julian managed to talk her out of it. When the situation finally became desperate, she agreed with Julian that the only way to get herself out of her marriage would be to have a very public affair and force her husband's hand. But just when things were beginning to go their way, Glasbury is found murdered in his house and the primary suspect is Penelope.

Julian swears to Penelope that she will always be safe and he will see to it. She has no idea how far he'll go to keep his oath, until the police arrest him for the murder.

I think The Romantic is my favorite Madeline Hunter book...so far. I don't think there's anything more romantic or sexy than a hero who has secretly loved the heroine from the time they were children, and is consistently plays the knight in shining armor to her damsel in distress. Julian is by far my favorite character in this series. He has kept his love a secret, instead pouring it into his poems and letters. He has never failed in his devotion to Penelope, always there when she needs him; always there to save her from whatever trouble she's in. He is, by far, the consummate romantic hero.

The writing is exquisite as usual. Madeline Hunter is such a gifted writer. She weaves enchanting stories of larger than life heroes and heroines that it's hard not to fall in love with her books.

Hard to finish
By gluttonous reader
~Potential spoilers~

I think the most frustrating part of this book is the lack of finished story lines. Um, where did Kimber's parents go? Why? What's the deal with Lia and Zane? Why is Kimber so upset his parents left? What's Audrey's problem? Why do all of Mari's people hate/fear her? Why does she change into a dragon in her sleep? How does that get fixed? Why is she the only one who does this? Is she supposed to sleep in a dragon escape proof room the rest of her life? What happened to her parents? And what's the deal with her brother. OH! and why did Rhys poof into Kimber and Mari's room? Why do the British dragons seem to think it's OK to take over another group and unilaterally decide who that other group's leader will marry?
I've read the previous two books. I really enjoyed the first one. The second is hazy and I don't remember being very impressed. But this one is just plain confusing. From the beginning I had no real idea what was going on. And nothing ever really got explained. As a previous reviewer said, some things that were pretty important to the story were barely touched on. Some things weren't discussed at all.
I found this book to be frustrating and almost gave up a couple of times. I didn't like the hero or the heroine. Actually, it's more like I didn't care about them. There was him chasing her, her not wanting to be trapped again, they sleep together, she is kidnapped and poof they are in love....it's almost like this book was cut in half and all the important stuff was left out.

Third book in the Drákon series
By Helen Hancox
This story is the third in Shana Abé's engaging Drákon series, the follow up to "The Smoke Thief" and "The Dream Thief". The Drákon are a race of people who appear human but have the ability to turn into dragons or smoke, although these abilities are gradually becoming less common amongst the Drákon. The previous two books have identified two different communities of Drákon, the first living at Darkfrith in England and the second in Transylvania.

The heroine of this story is Princess Maricara of Transylvania, the child bride of the ruler of the lost drákon tribe. That ruler, Imre, was killed in "The Dream Thief" and the Princess was left to rule alone at the age of fifteen. As the main part of this story starts, Maricara is nineteen and is troubled by her own people and by various English Drákon attempting to find her castle in Transylvania and being killed on the way. She decides that she has to leave her brother in charge of the community and to travel to Darkfrith in England to warn the Drákon there of the existence of Dragon Hunters.

Once she arrives, however, she discovers she's meant to marry the Alpha of the Darkfrith group, Kimber Langford, Earl of Chasen. It's also clear that the Darkfrith Drákon have plans to annex the Transylvania Drákon and can't be trusted. Maricara doesn't understand or abide by their rules which have been created to avoid detection and she has a problem in that she seems to sleepwalk into her dragon form, causing carnage. Can she and Kimber protect the Drákon from those hunting them down, and who is behind their pursuers? And can Maricara learn to accept her apparent role as wife of the Alpha in England?

This story is written in the same atmospheric and enjoyable style as the previous two books. The world of the Drákon with their Smoke and Dragon forms is fascinating, with beautifully written descriptions of them flying. The conflict between what they want and what is necessary for their kind is also well written although the love story aspect of this story didn't work quite as well for me. I also found it a little disappointing that the book didn't reach a complete resolution and that there were several question marks over things that had happened in the story which weren't explained fully. The book seemed to be setting the reader up for another book with Kimber's brother Rhys and possibly more from Zane who featured briefly in this book. It was a good read, as the other two have been, but also less satisfying, but will no doubt still be enjoyable to fans Shana Abé's Drákon world.

Upsetting Third Drakon Book Severely Disappoints
By loonigrrl
***SPOILERS***

After very much enjoying both The Dream Thief and The Smoke Thief, I was greatly anticipating Queen of Dragons. From the very beginning, however, I found myself not as connected to the story. Part of that may be due to the fact that I honestly don't remember much about Princess Maricara from the last book, and this one starts off expecting us to. Part of it may be due to the fact that Maricara is not an easy person to sympathize with and relate to. She is immediately portrayed as different from the rest of the Drakon, and although I normally sympathize with the outsider, she comes across as cold and distant and unlikeable. Sure, she was forced to marry the evil and abusive leader of the Carpathian Drakon when she was only nine and I'm sure suffered greatly at his hands, but Shana Abe's writing is rather vague and distant and detached about all this. I wasn't sure how much her horrible marriage affected Maricara (although I'm sure it was supposed to) because the character herself never really talked or thought about it. And the fact that it wasn't dealt with more just made me confused and frustrated.

Another problem I had with this book, which is a problem that I've had with the other two but which seemed more glaringly obvious and outrageous, is the lack of choice given to the female characters. Despite being forced into a marriage and raped by her husband (she was only nine- of course it was rape, but again all this was just hinted at vaguely) Maricara was then betrothed without her knowledge or consent at the age of FIFTEEN. It was hard enough to read about what was hinted about regarding her marriage at nine, but for then the alleged good guys to turn around and do the same thing was just appalling and disgusting to me. And all that happens by page 11, at which time I was immediately pre-disposed to hating not just our hero, but all the men of the drakon council who agreed to this, and the entire drakon society for allowing this to happen to a child. Needless to say, the romance didn't work for me at all. It's a romance book, after all, so it's no surprise that they eventually fall in love, but Kimber spent most of the book chasing her and contemplating imprisoning her, and that just isn't a convincing story of love for me.

The other part of the story is the plot about the sanf inimicus- the group of drakon hunters. Although they've been inactive, but known about until recently at the Carpathian Mountains, their presence is a new and scary threat to the once invincible English drakon. A young drakon girl goes missing, and then Kimber's brother is taken as well, but NOTHING happens with this story line beyond a minor skirmish. The fact that nothing was resolved about the sanf inimicus may be the most frustrating aspect about this novel. Queen of Dragons is set up and written so that you believe the big confrontation with the sanf inimicus will happen, but that's not true. Nothing happens beyond a brief fight with a small number of their group. No questions are answered.

Kimber's parents have also gone missing in the very beginning and that mystery is left dangling for the next book or two. Other characters make mysterious appearances, but nothing is explained or resolved. I could hardly believe it when I got to the last page- it felt like a hundred or more pages were missing. It was beyond frustrating. I remembered the first two books being mostly stand alone with a little hinted about for the next, but nothing like what happened here. It was seriously upsetting, and has left me questioning whether I'm going to continue reading a series where only more questions are asked rather than answered.

After delivering two good, solid books in this series, Shana Abe's third Drakon book severely disappoints. Characters are not well developed, not understandable, not relatable and not even likable. The romance felt too coerced and unsettling for me to enjoy. The male dominated drakon society led by an entirely male council which essentially imprisons the drakon in Darkfrith -just made me increasingly angry. And lastly, the plot about drakon hunters which is what I believed this book was about, was never dealt with. I would advise against reading Queen of Dragons altogether, but at the very least until the next book is published.

So says Sebastien Valentin, a former privateer destined to spend eternity bringing soul mates together. Hexed by a voodoo priestess nearly two centuries ago, he is summoned by anyone who unsheathes the Sword of Hearts....

Former powerboat racing champion Jamie Sullivan has seen enough of the world that she doesn't believe in happy endings. And she certainly doesn't believe in the costumed pirate who appears after she draws the antique sword she discovers in her attic—or his claim that he will match three people with their soul mates. And the third will be Jamie herself...

.A notorious rake whose resistance to love sealed his fate, Sebastien has a surprising gift for pairing lovers for a lifetime. He introduces Jamie's two closest friends to the happiness only true love brings. A fun paranormal romance
By A Customer
Though only springtime, the air conditioner in her new home-store, a nineteenth century Creole townhouse, in the French Quarter of New Orleans failed her. Jamie Sullivan searches for an extension cord in the attic, an area she and her to partners had no time to clean up before as they concentrated on opening the bookstore-restaurant. In the attic, Jamie notices an old trunk that she cannot resist looking into with visions of treasure dancing in her mind. However, the cache turns out to be Mardi Gras junk with the exception of an antique sword. She almost kills the suddenly appearing man who looks like a pirate.

Sebastian Valentin insists that Jamie holds the "Sword of Hearts." Furthermore, he guarantees that and her two compatriots will soon find true love. Besides wondering how this lunatic got into her home, Jamie insists she only needs an extension cord, not true love. Soon Sebastian and Jamie begin to fall in love, a violation of the rules of the genie union.

YOUR WISH IS MY COMMAND is actually three magical romances in one entertaining novel. The story line is fun and often amusing as the characters leave the audience not only believing at least in this genie, but also dreaming of this hunk of a magical being. Donna Kauffman writes a genial enchanting tale that will enthrall sub-genre fans with the quest to find more of the author's whimsical novels.

Your Wish Is My Command

Well Ms Kauffman has done it again. I thoroughly enjoyed Wish. I thought Sebastien was wonderful. It was not only a great read but a fun one. Donnas humor is wonderful. She always amazes me not only with a good story, but including suspense along with humor and she can tell three stories at the same time. I don't know how she does it. Each of the characters in this book were interesting and kept you wanting to know what was going to happen next. Donna had you wondering what mischief Sebastien was going to get into next. And of course how she was going to bring them together. I don't know who was more surprised Jamie or Sebastien. Those two were meant to be together. One thing I enjoy about Donnas books is that you never know what then ending will bring. I can't wait for her next book. Keep them coming Donna. I have read every book Ms Kauffman has written.

I wish it was Ree Ann and Angelo's story, though....
By blaze
The reason I gave this 4 stars is because I find the story too long in some parts and too short in others!!
The story is great, actually. Sebastien is a wonderful, sexy hero. I love the touch of French he has, the French accent, and gallantry. The plots unfolds naturally, as if the reader is actually witnessing the scenes. However, I find the 'unfolding' of the scenes of Jamie and Sebastien rather tooooo long. In the beginning it was okay, but after a while, it gets stuffy. Now, what I found very lacking is the description of the scenes of Ree Ann and Angelo. When Sebastien tried matchmaking Ree Ann and Angelo, I found myself skipping pages, just to see how these two will turn out. I savor the few pages of Ree Ann and Angelo, coz THEIR part of the story seems more intriguing and flushed with sexual tension. It is wonderful how two enemies became lovers in the end.
I do not like how the story ends, with the voodoo priestess suddenly being summoned to free Sebastien from the 'curse'. It looks rather 'off'.

Not for those in the medical field
By Kate Erwin
I bought this dictionary as a companion reference for a class I am taking; medical billing and coding certification. I'm only 3 weeks into the 20 week class and so far approximately 40% of the terms I've tried to locate in this dictionary were nowhere to be found. I can't imagine any medical professional would find this a useful tool in practice. If it isn't enough for my needs in the class, then obviously it will be virtually unusable when I am working in a hospital, practice, or corporate medical setting. This is fine for someone who wants to keep this at home as a casual reference, or perhaps is considering pursuing a career in the medical field (just to get a basic idea). But I would never recommend this to any medical professional, especiallly a coder/biller. A comprehensive medical dictionary is CRUCIAL to these positions, and this one isn't up to par.

The Four Desires: Creating a Life of Purpose, Happiness, Prosperity, and Freedom, by Rod Stryker

“Desire is here to stay. The challenge we all face, and which I intend to guide you through, is to learn how to take into account the full measure of who you are and use the positive force of all four of your soul’s desires to lead you to your best life.”
—Rod Stryker

According to ancient Yogic tradition, your soul has four distinct desires:

• The desire for purpose, the drive to become who you are meant to be
• The desire for the means (money, security, health) to prosper in this world
• The desire for pleasures like intimacy, beauty, and love
• The desire for spiritual fulfillment and lasting freedom

Learning to honor these four desires is the key to happiness, and to a complete and balanced life. But how can you discern what will truly satisfy your desires? How can you increase your capacity to achieve them? What if your desires seem to conflict with one another? Is it really possible to live a spiritual life while also wanting material pleasures and success?

For more than three decades, master teacher Rod Stryker has taught yoga in the context of its deepest philosophy. His course, called The Yoga of Fulfillment™, has helped thousands recognize their soul’s call to greatness and to achieve their dreams. Now, in this wise and richly practical book, he has distilled those broad teachings into a roadmap for becoming the person you were meant to be. It is filled with revealing true stories, provocative exercises, and practices for unlocking your inner guidance. And even if you’ve never done a yoga pose, you can follow this step-by-step process to:

• discover your soul’s unique purpose—the one you came into this world to fulfill.
• recognize the goal(s) you need to focus on at any given time and enliven your capacity to reach them.
• overcome self-defeating ideas and behavior.
• recruit your deepest energies and strengthen your resolve to meet any challenge.
• learn to live with joy at every stage of your growth.

The Four Desires is nothing less than a complete path toward living your best life possible—a life that is rich in meaning and in means, a life that attracts and emanates happiness, a life that is your unique gift to yourself and the world.

The Power of Desire

Ten years before I met Dean, he was at the top of his career as a broadcast journalist. After more than a decade covering a variety of conflicts in the Middle East and Asia, he was now appearing nightly on network television. Just when it seemed that he had attained everything he had ever aspired to and spent his life working for, Dean's life as he knew it came to a devastating end. He had experienced various levels of excruciating pain for the past six years after suffering a fractured vertebra and declining surgery. But now he knew that something was terribly wrong. Rushed into emergency surgery, he woke from general anesthesia to a doctor standing over him, giving him the grave news that the operation had "failed" and that Dean would be "permanently disabled."

Unable to sit, barely able to walk, Dean returned to the States, literally and figuratively a broken man, his spirit as broken as his spine, his career over. Within months, he was little more than what he described as a man "pickled on painkillers."

Over the next couple of years, little changed-until his wife gave birth to their first child. His time celebrating Finn's birth was cut short, however. Dean's health, which had been deteriorating since the failed surgery, had taken a turn for the worse. Tests revealed a new, life-altering diagnosis: cancer. His prognosis was "a year or two to live." With his physical pain and mental torment more severe than ever, Dean's doses of prescription painkillers were increased and now included a morphine drip.

Months passed with Dean bedridden and in all but a hopeless state. Then, with less than a year to live, Dean had an epiphany. Lying in bed with his young son playing nearby, the nightmare of the past few years and the weight of dying suddenly came crushing down on him. He was overwhelmed by the realization that he was moving irreversibly toward fulfilling the doctors' prognosis; he and his son-the most precious thing in the world to him-would soon be separated forever.

Suddenly, as though breaking through the dark cloud that had been overshadowing his whole life the past few years, Dean saw himself through the eyes of his son. If nothing changed and he was to die, Finn's only memory of his father would be that of a man who had committed to nothing other than being a helpless victim. Dean realized that he had so succumbed to self-pity that his son had never seen his father do or be anything that Finn could look back on and be proud of. It was not Dean's fault that he broke his back or had cancer, but Finn had not seen him even try to make the best of the time he did have- that was Dean's responsibility. Someone somewhere in the world had it worse than he did, Dean realized, and someone somewhere was doing better than he was with far less.

Dean immediately made a resolution. He would change. There was no way to know if he would survive cancer or ever be an able-bodied father who could play baseball with his son, but he made a commitment nonetheless. For however many days he had left, he would be a living example to his son of how a man could, or in Dean's eyes should, live his life. He would face the circumstances in his life exactly as he would want Finn to face his own future challenges.

A few days later, Dean found himself doing yoga for the first time in a class that was being offered at his rehabilitation center. Within minutes, he knew he had, in his words, "found his path to healing." He had no way of knowing whether the healing would be spiritual and physical or just spiritual, but he sensed that it was the beginning of a new chapter in his life.

Driven by his resolve, Dean immersed himself in learning everything he could about well-being, spirituality, and cancer therapies and applying what he learned. He consumed books on diet and nutrition, yoga, spirituality, positive thinking, visualization, and meditation. He dramatically changed his lifestyle, inside and out. He willed himself to practice yoga and meditation for hours a day-in the beginning, crawling out of bed to get onto his yoga mat.

As the months passed, things began to change. Dean could sit up for ten, then twenty, then eventually sixty minutes at a time. Soon after that, he was able to walk to the kitchen. He cut back on his pain medication and eventually stopped it altogether. More victories came. Eventually he was able to drive. And then came the one change that meant more to him than any of the others: he was able to lift and hold his son. Miraculously, and to his doctors' amazement, Dean had healed his broken back. But his transformation didn't end there. A short time later, about the time he was supposed to be dead, Dean received a new diagnosis: he was "cancer-free."

Dean's story is extraordinary. A person can do all that he did (and more) and still not be cured of cancer or heal a broken back, but his is more than a story about beating the odds. It is an illustration of the power of desire coupled with the willingness to use every resource available to achieve a goal. It is a telling reminder of just how potent you can be in affecting your destiny. Viewed from a different perspective, Dean's story can also be seen as ordinary, in the sense that it portrays the very definition of what constitutes a human being, what in Sanskrit is called a kama yoni, which means "the species which has the privilege of performing actions and which thus can change the course of its destiny." By seizing his resolve and taking positive command of all the resources available to him, Dean was embodying the principle that defines us and sets us apart from all other species.

This idea was eloquently expressed by French essayist Charles Du Bos, who I believe conveyed the essence of all yogic teachings as well as the formula for achieving a truly fulfilled life when he wrote, "The important thing is this: to be able, at any moment, to sacrifice what we are for what we could become."

Take a moment to consider who you would be and how much better our world would be if more of us would "sacrifice what we are for what we could become."

Dean came to one of my Yoga of Fulfillment workshops after he had healed physically. Wanting a clearer understanding of what had transformed him, he was hoping to make use of the same power to overcome the current challenges in his life. Working with the processes of the Yoga of Fulfillment allowed Dean to see that having to face the prospect of imminent death, of being permanently separated from his son, had been the catalyst he needed to be willing to change his life. His intention to be "a living example" to his son for whatever time he had left altered the course of his destiny.

Dean's miracle-like accomplishments had everything to do with his willingness to sacrifice what he was in order to become what he could be. It began by him acknowledging his desire and finding a specific goal that he knew deep in his heart was absolutely worth achieving. Dean's overriding desire was to give his son a father he could love, respect, and perhaps even one day emulate. The Yoga of Fulfillment helped him realize that he had intuitively applied the principles that the ancient tradition teaches are key to achieving our goals. Once he learned the principles, he was able to apply them systematically to successfully meet the new challenges in his life.

Dean's intuitive unearthing of a singular and compelling purpose for his life combined with his all-consuming commitment to fulfilling it is a powerful illustration of a profound truth that was something of a credo for my first teacher, Mani. Drawing from an ancient scripture, he would constantly repeat, "A person can achieve almost anything, can surmount any difficulties, if they can harness their power."

The good news is that you don't need to be facing life-and-death circumstances, as Dean was, to harness this power. As Mani reminded me time and time again, you have extraordinary power to accomplish extraordinary things-enough to "achieve almost anything" and "surmount any difficulties"-if you are willing to formulate goals and learn how to direct your innate power toward achieving them. The foundation for achieving any and all that you aspire to is the power of desire.

Desire Is Everything and Everywhere

Desire touches everything in the natural world. It is easy to lose sight of just how powerful, pervasive, and integral desire is to the world in which you and I live. If not for a spark between your biological father's sperm and biological mother's egg, you wouldn't exist. Thanks to one particularly desirous sperm, you are in your present form, reading these words. Congratulations. You are, in fact, the winner of an intense competition between millions of other microscopic sperm desirous of impregnating an egg.

At your birth, more than your mother's desire was necessary to bring you into the world. If you were born naturally, you actively engaged in a most intense sequence of what are unmistakably willful and desirous contortions to pass through your mother's birth canal. And just in case the sum of your and your mother's desires had not been enough to bring you into the world safely, it would have been necessary to rely on the desire of doctors and other caregivers to intervene. "Man is verily formed of desire," the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad reminds us.

Desire's role didn't end when you came into the world. Desire compelled you to lift your head and then to roll over and later to stand; once you were able to stand, desire compelled you to walk, then to run. Thanks to desire, you sought to develop the skill of language, in large part so you could more clearly ask for-if not insist on-the things you wanted as well as to participate with those around you. Speaking, and later writing, provided you more freedom and capacity to pursue your desires in life. You are who and what you are because of desire.

God of the Old Testament had desires. His desires were the first sparks that created light and life, day and night, heaven and earth, and the stars. Before any of them existed, according to the Judeo- Christian tradition, each was a flicker of desire in the eye of the Almighty. The same concept is found in the spiritual traditions of India. The Yajur Veda, for example, one of the four original Vedic texts, tells us that divine desire, or kama, created the world. Without this desire, the world could not exist.

The Vedas teach that desire is ever-present. It is with you at every step and with every breath you take. Desire precedes your every action, since before you can do, you first have to want. I can't lift my arm, reach for a drink of water, or do anything else without first wanting to; thus every action you have done or will do-including those that are sparked by your subconscious-is preceded by a desire.

Desire is also the seed of every thought. The tradition teaches that before you can have a thought, you first have to have a desire. Imagine how many thoughts you have had in your lifetime and you'll begin to have an idea how many desires you have had.

"As long as one has a body, one cannot renounce action altogether," says the Bhagavad Gita. Thus, for all practical purposes, as long as you are acting, thinking, or speaking-as long as you are alive-there is no end to desire.

Desire, the same thing that possessed the part of you that at one time was the sperm to fertilize the other part of you that was the egg, is the same thing that compels your lungs to breathe, your heart to beat, your kidneys to function, your body, in all its complexity, to work as an integrated whole. This same spark also fuels your desire for spiritual and lasting fulfillment and motivates you to seek fulfillment in every facet of life.

To paraphrase T. K. V. Desikachar, a renowned author and widely considered a leading voice for the ancient tradition of yoga, the first step in yoga is the desire to be better. Alain Daniélou, a highly respected authority on Vedic wisdom, in his book Virtue, Success, Pleasure, and Liberation, cites Madhavacharya: "On the physical, as on the intellectual and spiritual plane, all creation, all invention, all imagination is the fruit of desire."

Even the Buddha, who, it is fair to say, transcended desire, preached what he called the Middle Way or Middle Path, which is the path, according to the Buddha, that led to the state of enlightenment. He described it as the balance between the extremes of sensual indulgence and total renunciation. It is also worth noting that a deep and profound aspiration was what moved the Buddha to pursue and eventually achieve enlightenment. In other words, without a highly evolved desire to overcome suffering and the pain of impermanence, he would not have achieved sublime exaltation; he would not have been moved to search for a way to end his own suffering and then, after he achieved it, to alleviate it in those he saw around him.

Desire is here to stay. The challenge we all face, and which I intend to guide you through, is to learn how to take into account the full measure of who you are and use the positive force of all four of your soul's desires-dharma, the desire to become who you were meant to be; artha, the desire for the means to help you fulfill your dharma; kama, the desire for pleasure of all kinds; and moksha, the desire for freedom and a connection to the Eternal-to lead you to your best life.

chapter 2

Two Kinds of Fulfillment

The Oxford American Dictionary defines fulfillment as "satisfaction or happiness as a result of fully developing one's abilities or character," and as "the achievement of something desired, promised, or predicted." It's worth noting that both aspects of this definition are attainment-oriented, something you feel whenever you satisfy a want or desire, or reach a goal.

You first experienced this kind of fulfillment early in life when, for example, you were provided with milk in response to your cries. This kind of fulfillment continued, evolving into the elation you probably felt on Christmas morning if the presents you hoped for were under the tree, the pride of receiving the merit badge you aspired to as a Boy or Girl Scout, the pleasure of buying something you really wanted, the excitement of your first kiss or your first sexual experience, the high of a promotion at work, the thrill of your stocks going up, the joy of discovering that someone you are attracted to feels the same way about you. The more you've desired something, the longer you've waited for it, the more of this kind of fulfillment you are likely to experience when it's finally yours. At least for a while.

Deep, Challenging, and Life-Changing
By David Bennett
Stryker bases his book on four "desires" derived from the Hindu religion. They are dharma (the desire to fulfill your life's purpose), artha (the desire for means, such as money and security), kama (the longing for pleasure), and moksha (the desire for freedom and spiritual fulfillment).

Because most of the concepts were new to me, I found the book challenging, but satisfying. Basically, Stryker uses the "four desires" to help the reader find his or her purpose in life by identifying inner desires and fulfilling them. Starting with finding your overall purpose in life (your "Dharma Code"), Stryker then provides meditative exercises which guide readers to explore inside their minds, to develop more specific goals and aspirations. Exercises include "Forty-Eight Hours of Fearless Action" and "Relaxing Into Greatness." Sometimes what the rational mind thinks is one's life purpose (such as "make a lot of money") might conflict with what the entire self really wants from life. Fortunately Stryker provides ways to bypass the conscious mind and overcome mental obstacles. I should note that this is not a book about satisfying every selfish whim. "Desire" in Eastern philosophy is much more complicated than this, and the highest forms of desire are selfless.

The book made me reflect on my purpose in life. I never really thought about an overarching purpose before, and when I did, I tended to think of it as relating to my career or completing educational hurdles. His ideas got me thinking more deeply about my purpose in life and what hinders my own self-development. He strikes a balance between spirituality and science, and even though the book is largely Eastern in character, he includes Western wisdom too, including Biblical quotes. You don't have to embrace Hinduism to use this book; skeptics and Christians can appreciate it, although there is a strong Eastern spiritual component to it. I am still exploring my purpose, but I have determined that it likely relates to making connections with God and people, and enriching the lives of those whom I meet (as a Christian, I would frame it as more perfectly loving God and neighbor).

Even though I really liked this book, to be complete, let me list a few things that some readers may not like about the book. First, many of the terms will be new for Westerners. I found them hard to pronounce and remember. Stryker explains them well, and it is worth the reader's time to learn them. Second, many of the meditation exercises can't be done very well unless you listen to them. Stryker sells a CD with them on it, or you can record them yourself. The former costs money, the latter takes up a good deal of time. Third, the book is long. With over 300 pages, reading it requires commitment. Fourth, the book might be too spiritual for some readers, even though Stryker tries to include scientific information to back up certain claims. Finally, to get a lot out of it, you will have to invest time to complete the exercises. Some of them are pretty involved and all of them require you to consider the possibility of personal change.

Overall, I enjoyed this book and learned a lot about the philosophical side of Yoga (it is more than just poses!). It is one of the best books I have read in a long time. Most importantly, I better understand my purpose in life and have tools to continue to discern my purpose and how I can achieve it. The book can be challenging, both in content and what it asks you to do, but it is worth the effort. I highly recommend it.

a whole course in yoga
By Tom T
I have read a number of self-help books and found that most of them were silly with the useless philosophy, "be happy and everything will be alright" or the author could have summed up anything worthwhile he had to say in a short pamphlet. Many of those books are also filled with incomprehensible Psyco Babble BS. This book is quite the opposite. Because I have studied eastern literature such as the Gita for many years and practiced meditation for about 40 years, I am very familiar with many of the ideas, terminology and techniques being taught in this book. The author's knowledge seems to be correct and his practices are both clear and useful. It is doubtful that there is a better book which really teaches life skills and ways to determine whether you are on the best path to be as sucessful and as happy as you can be. His lessons are based on the ancient teachings of the Vedas; his interpretations are easy to follow and in my opinion make sense.
The meditation (TM) that I practice is different from the ones presented in this book, but they do not conflict or take anything away from my practice... so if you already meditate this book will only enhance your knowledge. At age 63 and retired, some of the lessons in this book would have been much more helpful to me at a younger age but I still found many useful and some were life changing for me. The lesson to determine my life work (direction)was a bit late for me since I long ago found myself on "my" perfect path (work). But the exercises to help me determine why some of my desires were not being fulfilled were incredible. I have already noticed changes for the better in my life with a few very simple exercises. If you practice the ideas in the book "The Secret", you might find "The Four Desires" helpful as well. If you like the uplifting stories in "The Autobiography of a Yogi" sweet, you might find some of the stories in this book equally so. This book is a whole course in Yoga (exercise, meditation, knowledge gaining techniques), take what you want or need, leave what you don't. I could not recommend this book any more highly.

Dharma, Kama, Artha, and Moksha
By C. CRADDOCK
This book shows you how to find Dharma, Kama, Artha, and Moksha in your life, through meditation, yoga poses, and exercises that reveal what is in your heart, what your unique Dharma is, and how you can create the life you dream about.

Dharma is your purpose in life. It can be a career, or if you can't make a living from it yet are compelled to do it anyway, it could be a calling. Perhaps you will have to make a living another way to support yourself, but that will be all right because you are fulfilling your purpose in life.

Kama is pleasure, and that covers a lot of ground, like good food, love, happiness, and enjoyment of Art, Music, and Literature. Though you can overindulge or sometimes find that desire is infinite, and you can't really be satisfied, there is nothing wrong with pleasure if it is balanced with the other three desires. You don't have to completely ignore your desire to follow a spiritual path.

Artha is prosperity, but it is also the means to fulfill your other desires. It can be a job, income, shelter, food as fuel to keep going, air to breath, water to drink. It is also concerned with physical health. Whatever it takes to keep you going while you are fulfilling your higher purpose.

Moksha is called Freedom in the title to this book, but it is a kind of peace of mind, or Freedom from worry. It is a kind of detachment and acceptance of whatever happens, a contentment that you can feel in spite of your circumstances.

I enjoyed reading it, but now that I have finished reading it the real work begins. It seems very simple to meditate, but can I do it consistently every day? People read self-help manuals and make resolutions, but how many people follow through? I think that if you follow the simple steps outlined here, you will succeed. There are affirmations, self-hypnosis, and other techniques that will make your wishes come true, but this book doesn't sugar coat the fact that you might have to make changes and adjustments within yourself, and do some actual work, to make things happen.

First the book shows you how to discover your Dharma Code. This is kind of your Mission Statement, what you believe is your highest purpose in life. Then you make a sankalpa, which is like a resolution or goal. The sankalpa should be in line with your Dharma Code, your greater purpose, for it to succeed. Let's say that your sankalpas are goals along the way that lead to your main goal, your Dharma. As you pass each milestone, your confidence grows. You work with it for 6 to 18 months until you manifest the change you envisioned. Then you might make a new one. If you meet resistance you might have a vikalpa, something that on a subconscious level wants the opposite of your sankalpa, and you could be sabotaging your efforts. The book has exercises that will reveal any vikalpas preventing you from realizing your sankalpa. There are all kinds of great exercises that I skimmed over while reading it, but now I am going to put the ideas into practice. One of the meditation techniques is called Relax Into Greatness, and I am sure that I can be really great at relaxing, with the help of this book. Another thing discussed in The Four Desires is The Creation Equation. The Creation Equation is Shakti plus Vayu is greater than Karma, Equals Prapti. Shakti is the initial spark or desire to do something or for something to happen. Vayu is the force or energy you bring to bear on making it happen. Karma is the resistance. Prapti is the goal, what you are trying to manifest.

I think that mediation is a way to still the conscious mind long enough for the wisdom that resides in the subconscious mind to percolate up. The subconscious mind doesn't think in words arranged in linear patterns. Images, feelings, sensations, and maybe you can know things all at the same time, or two or more ideas that seemingly have no connection are discovered to have meaningful connections. The book talks about the unconscious mind, but I have always preferred to think of it as the subconscious mind. Unconscious seems like you are just in a coma or have suffered some kind of blackout. Subconscious seems like a better term, because you are conscious, but it is of a different quality.

Throughout the book there are lots of stories about clients Rod Stryker has had over the years, some who fulfilled their wildest dreams, and some who couldn't. I found this book very down to earth and I could relate to the stories very easily. There was one very good example of someone who had major setbacks in their life but who, looking back, sees that the setbacks were a part of the path that led them to even greater success. This is Steve Jobs, who was fired from Apple, yet formed a new company called Next that was eventually bought out by Apple who then used the new technology they had developed as their new operating system. Steve also developed the computer animation studio called Pixar. He had another setback when he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, yet though at first he was told he had only a few months to live, his cancer was curable, and he beat it. He points to those two events, where he really hit bottom, as being things that spurred him on to greater things. This is called a vairagya, or actually vairagya is a kind of detachment from feelings, and one way you can do it is to look at the bad parts of your life and see how they led you to the good.

This is kind of a self-help manual, and I have read a lot of them with varying results. I think this one is very practical. It quotes a lot of people, from George Bernard Shaw to Einstein, from the Bible to the Bhagavad Gita. It can get lofty and metaphysical, yet it is very grounded and down to earth. It draws on a Yoga tradition that is thousands of years old, yet it speaks in a voice that is relevant today. I am very glad to have this book, and now that I have read it, I will keep it, and follow through with the exercises and meditations. I am sure that this book is going to make a very significant change in my life, and I can't wait to see what happens next.
