Palmer's 11th medical thriller (Fatal; etc.) takes careful and bloody aim at the managed care industry, beginning with the murder of several loathsome CEOs of HMOs in Massachusetts. Dr. Will Grant is a talented and caring physician in the Boston area who works long hours and hates the unfair and obstructive practices of the big insurance companies. Patty Moriarity is a rookie state cop whose first big case is investigating the deaths of the health care vultures. After some early research, Patty suspects Will, but soon enough that's all straightened out and they're smooching on the couch. After Will is drugged and collapses during a delicate operation, things get rough: he's kicked out of his hospital for drug abuse and sued. Next he's being tortured, while Patty, shot after attempting to save the boorish chauvinist detective who has taken over her case, lies in a coma. The action is a bit preachy in the beginning, but once Palmer gets all his characters in place, the suspense builds. He wraps it all up with a slam-bang battle between our love-smitten duo and some extremely nasty health insurer executives and their loyal, gun-toting minions.

I'll finish it, but I don't have to like it!

I have been waiting for this book for ages. A while back, I just so happened to stumble upon a Micheal Palmer book, and after devouring it, I eagerly lept from book to book, finding each one a very enjoyable (though often predictable) read. This book, I waited a while for the hardback edition and, not liking hardbacks, waited even longer for the paperback. I must admit, I am not all the way finished with this book. It may get better still. But being almost 400 pages into a 480 page book gives me enough of an insight to write a review.

This book is hard to get through. The last 100 pages have picked up, but the first couple hundered pages were kinda painful. The characters are fairly unlikeable. I don't feel any sort of connection to any of them, I'm not rooting for them, and I definitely don't feel any chemistry between Will and Patty. There are also a few more characters than usual, and I feel that Palmer, in an attempt to broaden his story arc, ended up hurting himself. There were so many characters, he didn't really take too much time with any of them. (the possible exception being, in my opinion, the Davenport widow)

As other reviewers have said, his plots appear to be more cut and paste all the time. Insert name, insert town (if it happens to be one of the few outside of White Memorial), and use the same story as the last one. But I can deal with that.

This book, however, fell short of it's mark...at least in my opinion. I will finish it, out of deference to my esteem for his previous books, rubbernecking, whatever. But I may pay a little more attention to reviews of the next one.

Nothing but cliches

This wasn't an easy read because it was so predictable. Every character has been done before..and usually better. You know: saintly doctor (started a soup kitchen) versus greedy corporate execs bent on squeezing profits from the poor, but humble little people; evil ex-wife who is squeezing the cash from saintly ex.; love interest slash gorgeous, hot babe in bed slash supercop who's the next Serpico; cliche Irish patriarch slash high ranking cop slash dad; evil and stupid, but conniving, cops, etc.

Contrary to what MP would have you believe, there is no such thing as low-cost Healthcare. It IS paid for by someone and many of the countries that have it have to "ration" out which patient gets what and when...if ever. No, I'm not in the profession, nor do I have a vested interest in it other than my own health.

BTW, doesn't anyone check when an author tries to use a foreign language? "Somos cierros" instead of "estamos cerrados" at the end? This is so basic that it makes me cringe. Is the publisher too cheap to spend a few bucks? Holy crap, even a first year student knows the difference. If you're going to use a foreign location, then check your facts.

The Society An exciting new medical thriller from Michael Palmer

Michael Palmer's latest medical thriller, The Society, is about the managed care industry (HMOs), and the medical profession's ongoing opposition to them.

Dr. Will Grant is a workaholic. He works almost eighty hours a week as a surgeon and an ER doctor at his hospital. He does this to make ends meet, having to pay child support for his twins (a boy and a girl), whom he adores and alimony to their mother and his ex-wife, Maxine. Despite this drain on his time and finances, Will manages to support his pet projects, a mission style soup kitchen for the poor and homeless called the Open Hearth Kitchen and The Hippocrates Society, a collection of various medical practitioners who have banded together the counter the creeping influence of the dreaded heath management organizations.

All in all, Will, who is widely respected in his field and admired for his sensitivity for his patient's welfare, has a pretty normal and uneventful life. That is until he is cajoled into representing the Society, as a last minute replacement, in a scheduled debate with Boyd Halliday, the CEO of a large and growing HMO, Excelsis Health Care. From then on his life seems to unravel. First he meets an attractive plain clothes police officer, Patty Moriarity, who is investigating a series of homicides of CEOs of three HMOs believed to be the work of a disgruntled patient or relative. At first Moriarity is attracted to Will but after she checks up on him she thinks he may possibly be involved in the murders. Then the killer calls him on his private number, congratulating Will on his skill in the debate. Then the ceiling caves in when he passes out, literally head first, into the patient's newly opened incision during surgery.

Will wakes up in intensive care and everybody is very cool to him. When his Doctor, an old friend, comes in, he tells Will that he tested positive for a massive dose of Fantanyl, an extremely dangerous and addictive drug. Will of course, is incredulous but he and nobody else can think of how it could have been administered to him. He knows he didn't do it but it seems all his co-workers and most of his friends have made up their mind, in fact his medical license is suspended and he's banned from the hospital.

As the story continues Will becomes the murder suspect for the serial killings, though he's never charged. He has become entangled in the web of intrigue surrounding the murders and he and Moriarity wind up fighting for their very lives.

Conclusion

I have read four or five novels by Michael Palmer and have enjoyed each one. The Society was not the best one but it was a very good medical thriller that had me flipping them pages. Palmer's writing style is very smooth, with just a touch of humor. He does a good job of writing his novels without going into Doctor speak but occasionally he does go into his physician mode, whereas I have a little trouble understanding but this is minimal and I simply nod my head and go on.

The story was well written and flowed well. There was always something happening in this fast moving, fast reading novel, which made it impossible for the story to become boring. Palmer developed the characters well and you really empathized with the protagonist, Will Grant. There were several antagonists of varying degrees to dilike as well. One was Detective Brasco, an obvious chauvinist, who was in charge of the investigation, who was full of himself but couldn't seem to get out of his way. At one point approaching the end of the book Moriarity saves his life and almost gets killed herself. That was the last we heard of Brasco and I would liked to have seen some sort of resolution between he and Moriarity but it was not to be.

If you like medical thrillers then this is right up your alley. Nobody, except maybe Robin Cook, does them better. Final rating 4.3 stars

Incredibly Exciting as well as Romantic

Whew! I just finished this book and I think I was holding my breath the last few chapters - it was that exciting and oh soooo romantic.
Beautiful Lauren MacRae was kidnapped as a child and held hostage by the English and it was in a dungeon she would meet the Englishman Arion du Morgan who would save her life. Years later she would return that favor on a battlefield against a new enemy and save his life.
He was now the Earl of Morgan and she the leader of the Clan MacRae. Both of these wonderful people were raised to hate one another but they were intelligent enough to realize they needed the strength of an alliance to fight a more vicious and common enemy. It made sense to form an alliance, but it also forced them into each other's company, finding themselves drawn to one another in spite of the history that taught them to hate and despise one another. Lauren was betrothed since childhood to Payton Murdoch, a powerful laird of Clan Murdoch and she would do her duty to her people for the honor of Clan McRae, even if it meant denying a love she thought never to feel.
This was such an amazing story, there were so many obstacles to overcome between these two people but Ms. Abe writes with such intensity that you can feel the passion drawing them to one another. This is a historical romance, but one that has a tremendous amount of bite and so much action that you will have trouble putting it down. Ms. Abe is definitely on my `buy' list!

More action than romance...

Lauren and Arion, as well as the secondary characters are all well defined and well represented. I liked the way Shana Abe portrayed Lauren best. She's tough, courages and level headed. I've read quite a few books with tomboyish even a fighting-woman as heroine yet only a few manages to sound all-together feminine. Lauren here is not at all brawny, which i like. Yes, she fights like a man yet she's still able to maintain that feminine aura which I find fetching. Arion on the otherhand is the typical hero: handsome, rich, well trained warrior and well respected by his people. Their love for each other actually took awhile to flourish yet understandable considering the plot and their situation. I guess perhaps this is why I rated this book a 4 star. This book is more of an action scenes than the love scenes I prefer. The external clash between the clan which is link back to Arion and Lauren seemed to overshadow their romance. I don't mind adventure and action twist in my books... However, I admit that there are lots of times that I'm not as move with action/adventure twist compared to a lovey-dovey, spine chilling, heart squeezing, goose-bumps alert scenes. Call me a romantic fool but this is why I read ROMANCE books. I prefer heart soaring, trembly romances than action anytime.
It wouldn't be fair for me to rate this book lower than 4 stars mainly because of my own preferences as this book is truly well written. Ms. Abe really did a great job on this one. IF you are the kind of person who prefers more action and adventure to romance then INTIMATE ENEMIES is definitely for u.
This is only my second book of Ms. Shana Abe and I will still pick up more of her works in the future. I may not have given this book a five stars rating but it's still an enjoyable read. It really all goes down to a matter of taste and preferences. I do urge you to try this book anyway, who knows you might like it more than I have...

Scottish Clanswoman

Lauren and Arion make an unlikely couple, to say the least. She is the leader of the Clan MacRae (thanks to her father's death) and he is a powerful english overlord -- and her clan's sworn enemy.
Neither can allow themselves to trust the other. But a defining moment in their past (once, when they were children, Arion saved Lauren from a tortuous fate), combined with their shared love for the land bring these two lovers together, against all odds. To keep safe everything they believe in, they must become allies and the two headstrong leaders form a risky alliance. This of course causes strife not only with Lauren's clan, but with Arion's soldiers. You can probably guess the rest.....
Ms. Abe writes with a touch of the mystical and has a deft hand at describing the beauty and wildness of the time period. This is an emotional book, with strong sensual characters. Lauren and Arion are striking figures and a well-matched couple who stay in your mind long after you finish the book.
I think the only reason I didn't give it higher stars is that I don't normally enjoy serious historical romances, prefering instead a light, comic approach. Also this book can be predictable and I saw the ending coming a mile away, but I still enjoyed the beautiful way it was written. As historicals go, this one is lyrical and filled with deep emotions. Pick it up especially if you have a love of Scotland.

A professional musician playing Las Vegas at 10, touring with Johnny Cash, George Jones, and Patsy Cline at 13, Mandrell cut her first record, got married, and entertained troops in Vietnam while still a teenager. In 1984, at the zenith of her career, she and her two oldest children were in an automobile accident that resulted in the death of the other driver and significant injuries to Mandrell. Alternating chapters juxtapose a standard autobiography with events preceding and following the accident; the two are distinct yet often dovetail. Barbara beats it all!

As one of my favorite all time country artists Barbara'a story is quite unique. A talented young girl raised in a home led by a strong father, she falls for a young man but wont succumb to young l8be without her dad's favor. She begins a musical career traveling the country in her dad's backseat with her sisters....she is so multi-talented no deterrent can hold her back....and as they say, the rest is history! Extremely enjoyable read. And I've read it many times. Its just intriguing.

A Truly Good Read

I read “Get to the Heart” many years ago at a crucial time and I’m getting ready to read it again. It is very well-written and engaging and I'm giving it five stars on it's own merit as written work. Barbara has indirectly been a part of my life for the past 35 years and has been a major blessing to me, especially during my youthful years when I needed a moral and professional role model. She's like a virtual family member and has taught me so much by example, but I tried not to let that influence my rating of the book itself. Thank you Barbara, for both the book and your influence!

Country When Country Wasn�t Cool

True fans of Barbara Mandrell have always felt like we've known her. She's sort of like the good friend whom we visit whenever possible or that distant relative who seems to have achieved just about everything but never flaunted it in our faces.
Her autobiography does a good job of filling in whatever blanks were left for a woman who has spent most of her life in the public eye. However, unlike many celebrity tell-alls that rely on multiple marriages, rampant illicit sexuality, and boastful solipsism, Barbara's story revolves around her long-lasting marriage, devotion to family, and reverent Christianity.
Country music aficionados will enjoy her tales of Nashville and the many intriguing anecdotes of Music City's other movers and shakers. These too lack the shock value or backstabbing glee that often oozes from celebrity biographies.
A great deal of time is understandably dedicated to the Dudney family `s (Barbara and her two oldest children) involvement in a fatal accident. Tragically an innocent young man lost his life, and under a draconian Tennessee state law, they were forced to sue his family or forego every penny of the millions of dollars in insurance money they could otherwise receive. As of the book's publication, the painful litigation had not been resolved. Hopefully, the dire situation has since been rectified.
Other highlights include tales of her early years on the road, the foray into television-- which forced a traditional family to live among the anything-goes Hollywood mentality, and numerous adventures that only world travelers get to enjoy. Yet it is the stories of family that make this work soar. Long before Barbara became a dutiful wife, she was and still is an admiring daughter. She plainly writes of her parents' shock upon finding an engagement ring in their 16-year-old daughter's room and how they forbid any contact between her now husband and their daughter for six months. Despite her pain, Barbara writes of her and then-fiancé Ken's unquestioning honor of her parents directive. Humorously she mentions how unfair she found their action but concedes that now as a mother, her response would be much more severe.
Too many times reading a celebrity's autobiography can elicit a feeling like "what a jerk," but Barbara Mandrell proves herself to genuinely be the person her fans always hoped she was.

About the Author
Elizabeth Bear was born on the same say as Frodo and Bilbo Baggins, but in a different year. This, coupled with her childhood tendency to read the dictionary for fun, has led inevitably to penury, intransigence, and the writing of speculative fiction. Her hobbies include incompetent archery, practicing guitar, and reading biographies of Elizabethan playmenders.

She is the recipient of the John W. I've got a starship dreaming. And there it is. Leslie Tjakamarra leaned both hands on the thick crystal of the Montreal's observation portal, the cold of space seeping into his palms, and hummed a snatch of song under his breath. He couldn't tell how far away the alien spaceship was--at least, the fragment he could see when he twisted his head and pressed his face against the port. Earthlight stained the cage-shaped frame blue-silver, and the fat doughnut of Forward Orbital Platform was visible through the gaps, the gleaming thread of the beanstalk describing a taut line downward until it disappeared in brown-tinged atmosphere over Malaysia. "Bloody far," he said, realizing he'd spoken out loud only when he heard his own voice. He scuffed across the blue-carpeted floor, pressed back by the vista on the other side of the glass.

Someone cleared her throat behind him. He turned, although he was unwilling to put his back to the endless fall outside. The narrow-shouldered crew member who stood just inside the hatchway met him eye to eye, the black shape of a sidearm strapped to her thigh commanding his attention. She raked one hand through wiry salt-and-pepper hair and shook her head. "Or too close for comfort," she answered with an odd little smile. "That's one of the ones Elspeth calls the birdcages--"

"Elspeth?"

"Dr. Dunsany," she said. "You're Dr. Tjakamarra, the xenosemiotician." She mispronounced his name.

"Leslie," he said. She stuck out her right hand, and Leslie realized that she wore a black leather glove on the left. "You're Casey," he blurted, too startled to reach out. She held her hand out until he recovered enough to shake. "I didn't recognize--"

"It's cool." She shrugged in a manner entirely unlike a living legend, and gave him a crooked, sideways grin, smoothing her dark blue jumpsuit over her breasts with the gloved hand. "We're all different out of uniform. Besides, it's nice to be looked at like real people, for a change. Come on. The pilots' lounge has a better view."

She gestured him away from the window; he caught himself shooting her sidelong glances, desperate not to stare. He fell into step beside her as she led him along the curved ring of the Montreal's habitation wheel, the arc rising behind and before them even though it felt perfectly flat under his feet.

"You'll get used to it," Master Warrant Officer Casey said, returning his looks with one of her own. It said she had accurately judged the reason he trailed his right hand along the chilly wall. "Here we are--" She braced one rubber-soled foot against the seam between corridor floor and corridor wall, and expertly spun the handle of a thick steel hatchway with her black-gloved hand. "Come on in. Step lively; we don't stand around in hatchways shipboard."

Leslie followed her through, turning to dog the door as he remembered his safety lectures, and when he turned back Casey had moved into the middle of a chamber no bigger than an urban apartment's living room. The awe in his throat made it hard to breathe. He hoped he was keeping it off his face.

"There," Casey said, stepping aside, waving him impatiently forward again. "That's both of them. The one on the 'left' is the shiptree. The one on the 'right' is the birdcage."

Everyone on the planet probably knew that by now. She was babbling, Leslie realized, and the small
evidence of her fallibility--and her own nervousness--did more to ease the pressure in his chest than her casual friendliness could have. You're acting like a starstruck teenager, he reprimanded himself, and managed to grin at his own foolishness as he shuffled forward, his slipperlike ship-shoes whispering over the carpet.

Then he caught sight of the broad sweep of windows beyond and his personal awe for the woman in blue was replaced by something visceral. He swallowed, throat dry.

The Montreal's habitation wheel spun grandly, creating an imitation of gravity that held them, feet-down, to the "floor." Leslie found himself before the big round port in the middle of the wall, hands pressed to either rim as if to keep himself from tumbling through the crystal like Alice through the looking glass. The panorama rotated like a merry-go-round seen from above. Beyond it, the soft blue glow of the wounded Earth reflected the sun. The planet's atmosphere was fuzzed brown like smog in an inversion layer, the sight enough to send Leslie's knuckle to his mouth. He bit down and tore his gaze away with an effort, turning it on the two alien ships floating "overhead."

The ship on perspective-right was the enormous, gleaming-blue birdcage, swarming with ten-meter specks of mercury--made tiny by distance--that flickered from cage-bar to cage-bar, as vanishingly swift and bright as motes in Leslie's eye.

The ship on perspective-left caught the earthlight with the gloss peculiar to polished wood or a smooth tree bole, a mouse-colored column twisted into shapes that took Leslie's breath away. The vast hull glittered with patterned, pointillist lights in cool-water shades. They did not look so different from the images and designs that Leslie had grown up with, and he fought a shiver, glancing at the hawk-intent face of MWO Casey.

"Elspeth--Dr. Dunsany--said you had a theory," she said without glancing over.

He returned his attention to the paired alien spaceships, peeling his eyes away from Genevieve Casey only with an effort. "I've had the VR implants--"

"Richard told me," she said, with a sly sideways grin.

"Richard? The AI?" And silly not to have expected that either. It's a whole new road you're walking. A whole different sort of journey, farther away from home than even Cambridge, when there was still more of an England rather than less.

"Yes. You'll meet him, I'm sure. He doesn't like to intrude on the new kids until they're comfortable with their wetware. And unless you've got the full 'borg"--she lightly touched the back of her head--"you won't have to put up with his running patter. Most of the time." She tilted her head up and sideways, a wry look he didn't think was for him.

She's talking to the AI right now. Cool shiver across his shoulders; the awe was back, with company. Leslie forced himself not to stare, frowning down at the bitten skin of his thumb. "Yes. I spoke to Dr. Dunsany regarding my theories . . ."

"Dr. Tjakamarra--"

"Leslie."

"Leslie." Casey coughed into her hand. "Ellie thought you were on to something, or she wouldn't have asked you up here. We get more requests in a week than Yale does in a year--"

"I'm aware of that." Her presence still stunned him. Genevieve Casey. The first pilot. Leaned up against the window with me like kids peering off the observation deck of the Petronas Towers. He gathered his wits and forced himself to frown. "You've had no luck talking to them, have you?"

"Plenty of math. Nothing you'd call conversation. They don't seem to understand please and thank you."

"I expected that." Familiar ground. Comfortable, even. "I'm afraid if I'm right, talking to them is hopeless."

"Hopeless?" She turned, leaning back on her heels.

"Yes. You see, I don't think they talk at all."



Leslie Tjakamarra's not a big man. He's not a young one either, though I wouldn't want to try to guess his age within five years on either side. He's got one of those wiry, weathered frames I associate with Alberta cattlemen and forest rangers, sienna skin paler, almost red, inside the creases beside glittering eyes and on the palms of big thick-nailed hands. He doesn't go at all with the conservative charcoal double-breasted suit, pinstriped with biolume, which clings to his sinewy shoulders in as professional an Old London tailoring job as I've seen. When London was evacuated, a lot of the refugees found themselves in Sydney, in Vancouver--and in Toronto.

God rest their souls.

He shoots me those sidelong glances like they do, trying to see through the glove to the metal hand, trying to see through the jumpsuit to the hero underneath.

I hate to disappoint him, but that hero had a hair appointment she never came back from. "Well," I say, to fill up his silence. "That'll make your job easier, then, won't it?" What do you think of them apples, Dick?

Richard grins inside my head, bony hands spread wide and beating like a pigeon's wings through air. The man's brains would jam if you tied his hands down. Of course, since he's intangible, that would be a trick. "That's got the air of a leading question about it." He scrubs his palms on the thighs of his virtual corduroys and stuffs them into his pockets, white shirt stretched taut across his narrow chest, his image fading as he "steps back," limiting his usage of my implants. "I'll get in on it when he talks to Ellie. No point in spoiling his chance to appreciate the view. I'll eavesdrop, if that's okay."

It might be the same asinine impulse that makes English speakers talk loudly to foreigners that moves me to smile inwardly and stereotype Dr. Tjakamarra's smooth, educated accent into Australian Rules English. No worries, mate. Fair dinkum.

Richard shoots me an amused look. "Ouch," he says, and flickers out like an interrupted hologram.

Dr. Tjakamarra grins, broad lips uncovering tea-stained teeth like a mouth full of piano keys, and scratches his cheek with knuckles like an auto mechanic's. He wears his hair long, professorial, slicked back into hard steel-gray waves. "Or...

Smashing conclusion to trilogy

"Worldwired" goes off, yet again in new direction. The three-part saga that in the author's "Hammered" seemed to be establishing itself as a cyberpunky "band of outlaws up against globalism and the corporations," but turned into an international thriller cum space opera in "Scardown," now adds a first-contact puzzle thread to the proceedings. (And a spectacular scene at the United Nations.)

This time out Jenny Casey takes more of a supporting role (although she gets plenty of action) as Richard, the super-intelligent artificial intelligence, moves front and center here. Certainly, he is the one who keeps all the plotlines together. But Jenny herself gets plenty of chapters in which to tell her part of the story in her wisecracky first-person-present style.

The author brings back the characters who survived the first two tales, and tosses in a few more (she puts a few of the returnees essentially on hold for a while, but do not fret, because she plugs them in when they're needed again), and once again uses her jagged multiple pov style. There's plenty of action here, but you have to resist the temptation to gobble down the pages, because if you do, you won't have the time to relish Ms. Bear's fine-honed prose style.

I hope that Ms. Bear will return to this "universe" she's created, although advertisements at the back of the book would seem to indicate that in her next novel she intends to go in another direction. No matter. I'll travel that road with her.

Fabulous wrap up of this three-book story arc

Watching Jenny grow and change from "Maker" in the first book, to a starship pilot in the second, to a complicated 50 year old combat veteran and reluctant hero in this book has been a fascinating journey. Bear's characters: heroes, villains, and bystanders, are all clearly lit and sympathetic (even when you know they are on the wrong side). If you liked "Patriot Games" or "Hunt for Red October" for Jack Ryan and the rest of the characters, I think you'll like this story, too. Gritty writing with an involved plot that keeps you guessing.

It also has an AI (artificial intelligence) patterned after Richard Feynman, famous physicist and drummer and a personal hero of mine. Marvellous.

Great Story and Writing

I never would have guessed where this trilogy would end. The plot was interesting and the characters compelling. I also really enjoyed the writing style of this author. A few of her more descriptive images really stuck with me.

An Outstanding Debut That Will Blow You Away!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Detective Kara Gillian is a bit of a loner because of her secret life as a demon summoner. It's hard to get close to someone when you have a summoning circle drawn on your basement floor and you leave your candles and tools laying around for anyone to see. When not summoning demons, Kara works as a Detective for the Violent Crimes unit. She is recently promoted out of Property Crimes and is very excited to be working some homicide cases.

During a summoning to complete her Summoner Training, the wrong Demon comes through the portal and into Kara's house. He doesn't seem all that bad, especially when he shows Kara what she's been missing from not having a man lately. But after her encounter, Kara realizes what a huge mistake she has made and that this Demon is not one to play around with. When he starts invading her dreams and the line between reality and dreaming is confused, Kara starts to regret ever doing the summoning in the first place.

A serial killer dubbed The Symbol Man killed thirteen people when Kara first joined the police academy. He was never apprehended and now three years later, he has begun his killing spree once again. Kara has always been interested in the case since first sensing arcane power around one of the deceased bodies. She has studied the case files and is the most educated on The Symbol Man out of everyone in the police force. So when Kara is given the lead on the case for her first job in Violent Crimes, she is thrilled to be given such a big opportunity to prove herself as a Detective.

The FBI has joined forces on this case and with them comes a gorgeous but obnoxious man named Agent Kristoff. Kara works side by side with him while trying to keep her knowledge of the occult under wraps so everyone doesn't peg her as a crazy satanic worshipper.

When the case turns out to definitely involve the world of the occult, Kara is at a crossroads on what to do. Does she keep her occult knowledge and position as a demon summoner a secret and try to solve the case herself or does she put her trust in a member of the FBI in the hopes that he doesn't think she's a lunatic? If Kara doesn't entrust in someone for some help, more people could end up killed. Will Kara's decision turn deadly or will she solve the case and come out alive?

Mark of the Demon is a delightful collaboration of genres including urban fantasy, suspense, romance and police procedural. Debut author Diana Rowland takes everything that I love in a book and puts it all together to write an outstanding novel. Take a dash of Charmed mixed with some Dexter and you have Mark of the Demon.

Mark of the Demon demands to be read in one sitting and is impossible to put down. There are some graphic scenes in this book so it is definitely not for the faint of heart. I enjoy the gritty and grimy aspects and was indeed shocked and scared while reading this book and it's not easy to scare me! Mark of the Demon is a breath taking, heart stopping, white knuckler thriller that grabbed me by the throat and didn't let go! Run and get this book when it releases June 23rd. The next book, Blood of the Demon is due out January 26, 2010.

Rowland's Demesne is Urban Fantasy at its Finest!

Beaulac Homicide detective Kara Gillian likes her chocolate donuts a little too much for her waistline. She's short, a bit socially inept, tactless and a bit crude, and as persistent as a terrier with a bone. She's not terribly beautiful, isn't terribly strong physically, and she hasn't ever had a boyfriend stick around longer than three months. Her childhood wasn't a walk in the park, and she dealt with personal trauma in not always the best ways. She's smart, and dedicated to her job as a cop, oh - and she's got a nifty ability to summon demons from the demon plane.

She's also the shining star of Diana Rowland's exciting debut novel, Mark of the Demon.

Sarcastic and witty, Kara is just flat-out-fun to read, and she's so refreshingly real and layered, such a nice change from the leather-clad, kick-ass, superhuman, biker-type heroines of most urban fantasy series that I found myself pitching headfirst into this book, unable to put it down until the wee wee hours of the morning, after finishing every delicious page.

An awesome blend of cop thriller and paranormal mystery, Mark of the Demon is exquisitely detailed, richly plotted, and well-paced. Her characters are human, with histories that aren't always pleasant, and personalities that sometimes match. FBI Agent Ryan Kristoff in particular was a yummy treat. Sometimes he was a total fed, sometimes he was like a goofy kid, and never did that dichotomy seem out of place or undefined.

Rowland's life experience truly gave an absolute air of legitimacy to the police stuff and her imagination blew me away on the paranormal stuff. Her demons and the world in which they inhabit, glimpsed only briefly but so beautifully, are a breath of fresh air in a literary world gasping for it. Rowland does a totally kick ass job introducing you to them and to the world in which Mark of the Demon exists. It rocked MY world and made me rock with laughter. It made me ache for the girl who suffered a childhood trauma and fell down a path of self-destruction and cheer for the woman who pulled herself off that path and doesn't let her past define or cripple her, or use it as an excuse to be horrible to everyone around her (or to herself). There was strength of character in Kara Gillian, and I appreciated it. And there were such DELIGHTFUL teasers in the book, hints of what'll be further fleshed out (I hope) and explored in the next book, Blood of the Demon, to be released in February of 2010. I. Can. Not. Wait!!

The only small criticism I have for the book was an early scene following the accidental summoning of Rhyzkahl, a demon lord. The subsequent scene seemed out of place and out of character, and the deeper I went into the book the more out of character it seemed upon reflection. I just don't see how Kara could go from being terrified beyond human comprehension and certain of her death to getting it on with the singly most destructive creature she'll ever meet, no matter how beautiful. I understood the compulsion bit, but when Rhyzkahl ceased that, the rest seemed jarringly out of place. As a result, that scene seemed sort of gratuitous and unnecessary.

That being said, I would like to caution those readers who like their violence or description of crime scenes to be glossed over. Rowland pulls no punches and hides no horror. It would be a shame to miss this book, but it may be necessary for you. That's not a criticism, as I happen to like the gritty reality of it and understand the necessity, but not everyone will or does.

Mark of the Demon gets a 4.5 stars (and a big HELL YEAH) from me. Highly recommended and MUCH appreciated! Enjoy!

"Mark of the Demon" is more paranormal mystery with hot sex than a paranormal romance with mystery. Make sense? The is Diana Rowland's first book about a brand new detective in soutern Lousiana who also happens to be a demon summoner. Her very first case turns out to be one that has ties to her family's past and also introduces her to one smoking hot demon lord!

Kara is a small-town cop and a demon summoner. When her first case turns out to be the resurgence of the 'Symbol Man' killings after a three year hiatus, she's not sure whether to be excited or overwhelmed! She quickly determines the killings have an arcane purpose and that means she's likely the only local detective who can solve this case. But first she'll have to deal with an amorous demon lord, a suspicious FBI agent, and a very high body count.

The author had to take the time to set up her world, its rules, and her cast; but once she had that fleshed out, I was drawn into the mystery of who was killing and why. I won't give away the solution, but I was a bit disappointed by the sleight-of-hand required from the author to produce the killer. If you like to 'solve' while you read, you'll likely have problems with this one. If you just like an exciting, gritty, urban fantasy mystery with some pretty hot sex thrown in...then you should pick up "Mark of the Demon" by Diana Rowland.

One of my favorites!

I bought this book in hardcover when it was first published and read it often, until I lost it in a move. I was delighted to find the kindle edition available. This was my first introduction to author Amanda Quick, and to Mrs. Lake and Tobias March. They've a but of Nick and Nora Charles mixed up with Holmes and Watson, mixed with gunpowder. This is the first installment in Quick's series about them, their growing relationship, and their "discreet inquiries" collaborations. The pair meet when Mr Marsh traces a gang of hardened criminals to Italy, to an antiquities shop they use as a message drop. Tobias soon determines the proprietor, Lavinia Lake, is not a co-conspirator, but an innocent (?) bystander, in some danger. They clash almost immediately, as Mrs Lake is a woman who speaks her mind and prefers to handle her own affairs. Fast- forward ... They meet again in London by chance in the course of dealing with fallout from the affair in Italy, and the game is on.

The book is fast_paced, clever, and holds one's attention. Lavinia Lake puts me in mind of Conan-Doyle's Irene Adler at times, a woman of brains, passion, and grit. Mr. March seems a much earthier Sherlock, someone who understands and joyfully embraces his own humanity, foibles, and place in the world. He's a man of action as well as intellect who has more than met his match -and equal - in Mrs.Lake, and is mightily intrigued by it.

It's a good read, especially if you're traveling, and be sure to read the sequels.

Not the Best, Nor the Worst

Lavinia Lake needs Tobias March likes she needs bad luck. Not only did Tobias destroy her shop in Rome (trying to save her life, or so he claims), now he continues to plague her back in England. Someone is trying to blackmail Lavinia by claiming he has a journal with details about her shop in Rome-that it was a place of criminal activity. This won't do because Lavinia is trying to give her niece a season to find a rich husband and can't possibly afford to have any hint of scandal attached to her name. When she arrives to confront the blackmailer and claim the journal she finds him dead. Frantically searching the blackmailer's quarters she soon discovers she can't find the journal but unexpectedly find Tobias March. Together they form an uneasy partnership and set out to find the journal.
As stated by other reviewers, the characters were never fully developed in this story. I don't think I ever knew Lavinia. The character of Tobias was better developed and I could picture him as a confirmed bachelor with little time for society and its pretentious manners. Both characters spent a lot of time bickering back and forth. While others found this irritating, I thought it was funny. This may have been due to the fact I didn't have time to read the book straight through and read it over a two week period.
Ms. Quick did introduce a different type of plot development that captured my interest. I don't think I've ever read anything quite like it before. I don't know where Ms. Quick intends to go with these two characters. It's my understanding they will appear in her next two books, sort of like a series. All I can say is I'll give the next one a try in hopes they are more fully developed and have Ms. Quick's trademark dialogue and plot.

UNLIKELY, BUT WELL-MATCHED DUO

Englishwoman, Lavinia Lake, is left widowed, poor, and the guardian of an intelligent, marriage-aged niece. Having no money, but a lot of determination, Lavinia goes from one job to the next, each ending under somewhat disasterous circumstances. First, she's a companion to a countess who runs away one night and leaves Lavinia and her niece stranded in Rome. Then she opens a shop in Rome and sells antique reproductions. The shop is unexpectedly destroyed by a seemingly madman.
Finally, she returns to England and sets herself up as a private detective, making discreet and SLIGHTLY SHADY inquiries for those who can afford her services. Once settled in this business, she encounters none other than the madman who destroyed her shop in Rome. He is Tobias March, also a detective. They find they are working on the same case, and after a series of misadventures, reluctantly agree to work together.
What comes out of their partnership is a deep mystery and an unforeseen love affair.
Amanda Quick promises that SLIGHTLY SHADY is Book One in a series starring Lavinia Lake and Tobias March. I look forward to Book Two.

Southern crime novels are a breed apart because of the weather. The heat is always a little more sweltering, the humidity always making everyone sweat just a bit more than their northern counterparts. There are the great New Orleans novels by James Lee Burke, and there is the Florida gang. There are even a few who set their most terrifying thrillers in the backwoods and bayous. For genuine heat, though, nothing beats Atlanta, a jewel of a city and the setting for Amanda Kyle Williams’s blistering debut thriller, The Stranger You Seek.

Keye Street immediately puts herself in the top echelon of suspense heroes. She’s a mess of fascinating contradictions—effortlessly brilliant on a case, totally inept in managing her own life. She is brutally funny and powerfully human. Williams has created one of the most realistic protagonists in crime fiction that I’ve had the thrill to read.

Of course, a southern crime novel needs a great villain, someone who amidst all this heat gets people running. The Stranger You Seek has a heck of a monster on the loose, a killer who is terrorizing Atlanta, taunting the police, and who seems a little too close to Keye to be just the stranger she seeks.

Fast and furious serial killer thriller

This is one book you need to plan for in advance. Because once you read the first few pages, you'll be glued to the book until you finish.

Williams has previously written a number of lesbian detective novels. I should mention also that more sensitive readers may be offended by the book, given the language and certain scenes. However, Williams juggles character, plot and tension--not to mention supplying plenty of twists and turns--as well as any other suspense writer you've read.

Keye Street, the protagonist, is a flawed but likeable former profiler for the FBI. Although she's of Chinese ancestry, she was adopted as a baby by a Southern couple. Keye loves the South as only someone who grew up there can.

At one point, Keye was tossed out of the FBI because she was an alcoholic. And not only that, but her marriage came to an end. Four years later she's sober, if somewhat shakily, and works at chasing down bail jumpers.

Summer in Atlanta can be about two degrees cooler than hell itself. But what really disturbs the citizens is when a serial killer begins a frightening cat and mouse game with the media.

Keye has extensive experience at profiling, but she is no longer Special Agent Street, and so hardly expects to be drawn into the case. Yet as the bodies begin to pile up, she finds herself on the hunt for the killer, drawn in by her friend, Lt. Rauser, who heads the investigation.

And the problem with giving you any more information is then I will spoil some of the surprises. And I hate, hate, hate it when other reviewers do that. So just let me just sum the book up: yes, this is one serial killer thriller that does stand out and that is worth the price.

The first Keye Street novel

In the real world, when they aren't stating the obvious, criminal profilers are wrong about as often as they're right. In thriller world, profilers have a miraculous ability to understand the criminal mind. That is certainly true of Keye Street, the former FBI profiler turned private investigator who stars in The Stranger You Seek. Fortunately, profiling is a relatively small part of the story.

The Stranger You Seek is a novel of old and new. The old: Keye reacted to the ugliness she saw while investigating crime by turning to alcohol, eventually losing her job (hence her gig as a private investigator). Keye employs an anti-establishment, counterculture computer hacker who can break into highly secure computers (thriller world is full of them and they all seem to work for private investigators). Keye's best friend is a police lieutenant who needs her help to find a serial killer. Soon after Keye joins the hunt, the killer starts writing letters to her police lieutenant friend, taunting him with clues to the next victim. And, of course, the hunters eventually become the hunted.

The new: The serial killer writes a "fantasy" blog on a website for knife fetishists. Keye does realistic bread-and-butter work (serving subpoenas, performing background checks, finding people who jumped bail) when she's not chasing the killer. Keye's Chinese mother worked as a stripper. Keye puts yellow mustard on her jalapeño-infused hash browns.

Yes, I'm grasping at straws: the novel is more old than new. I liked it anyway. Amanda Kyle Williams gives her primary characters interesting personalities and crafts a well-written story that, if not entirely original, is more entertaining than most.

Stories about serial killers often challenge the reader to find the pattern that links the killings. The Stranger You Seek does that effectively. On the other hand, the revelation of the killer's identity is forced. Although it seems to have been designed to shock the reader, I doubt that many will have that reaction. Williams tacks on a climax that surprised me but didn't persuade me; it was so incongruous that it elicited a "you've got to be kidding" response. Further impairing the story's credibility is Keye's insistence that there isn't enough evidence to arrest the killer even after the killer confesses to her. There is more than enough circumstantial evidence to corroborate the confession and criminals are convicted every day on the basis of their unrecorded admissions. Keye would surely know that. The killer is plainly left free only to set up the novel's climax.

Despite its flaws, I enjoyed reading The Stranger You Seek. The novel benefits from solid writing, engaging characters, and appealing humor. The grins induced by the story's lighter moments as Keye finds creative ways to serve subpoenas and apprehend bail jumpers made me think that the novel would have worked better as the story of Keye's luckless life without forcing a serial killer into the mix.

On the strength of Williams' writing skill, I'm encouraged to read the next Keye Street novel. I hope she continues to develop her offbeat central character without feeling the need to craft a contrived plot for the sake of adhering to the norms of thriller world.

The Top Ten Things That are Great About "The Stranger You Seek"

Keye Street is a dry alcoholic,a passionate believer in Krystal cheeseburgers and Krispy Kreme doughnuts, and a former behavioral analyst for the FBI. Adopted as "a scrawny Chinese American with questionable genes", she grew up in the south where she had "the distinction of looking like what they still call a damn foreigner in most parts of Georgia and sounding like a hick everywhere else in the world."

Those descriptions were enough to hook me into reading Amanda Kyle Willams' "The Stranger You Seek."

Keye works as a P.I. in Atlanta, mainly as a process server and bail recovery agent, despite her skills and experience, which the world has downgraded after her expulsion from the FBI. But there's a serial killer on the loose, specializing in knife play, and old/best friend Lt. Aaron Rauser of the Atlanta P.D. needs Keye's help.

Keye, of course, leaps into the case, while continuing to run her office with computer geek Neil and frequent visits from developmentally disabled Charlie, who was run over long ago by an armored bank truck, leaving him permanently damaged and coming off as a big goofy kid.

So as psycho bail jumpers and wife beaters and embezzlers vie for her time, Dr. Street (yep, she's a doctor) starts looking into the killings, where the serial lust killer leaves no trace - no DNA, no fingerprints, no fibers, no weapon... nothing. And no apparent connection between the victims.

Things heat up when the killer (by then dubbed the Wishbone Killer) starts sending emails to Rauser and Keye, and starts looking at Keye very personally, too.

That being said, here are the Top Ten Things That are Great About "The Stranger You Seek."

10. Keye's cases. One nut job after another. There's the embezzler Keye tackles and holds hostage in his own house until the banks open on Monday. There's the abuser who, rather conveniently, ends up butchered just for Keye. Or the one who ends up being Neil's drug dealer. Then there's the Case of the Lost Cow. No one is without quirks in this book.

9. Keye's mysterious past. Scrawny orphan, grandparents murdered in front of her when she was five, former FBI profiler...Little bits are sprinkled throughout the book and you'll end up wanting to know more.

8. Some nice love stories with all sorts of twists and turns... a kind-of-love story between Keye and her ex, between Keye and Rauser, between Keye's parents.

7. The creepy mysterious past of the Wishbone Killer, fed in little bits and pieces, so you can watch someone emerge from seemingly-normal-but-really-psycho-kid to seemingly-normal-but-really-psycho-adult.

6. Chilling insights into the thoughts of a knife fetish-ist. Maybe more than you ever wanted to know.

5. A loving tour of Atlanta, with all its flaws and charms.

4. Ah, family... Keye's mother stops by to let her know that her grandfather was killed -- run over by his own lawn mower (the one he used to drive around town after he lost his driver's license because he was half-blind) and that Grandma had already moved out when Granddaddy brought a snake to live with them and... well... you get the idea.

3. William's explanation of the passive aggressive nature of Southerners, and the ability to say anything horribly insulting if follwed with "bless his heart."

2. Excellent pacing and suspense, which is particularly well done when Keye breaks into a suspects apartment looking for evidence as the suspect is on his way back.

1. A surprise ending. I knew something was coming, but I didn't guess WHAT was coming. It's bigger, more surprising, and more complex than you'd imagine.

And for those reasons, I'm looking forward to Williams' next book.
